  • India’s journey to becoming a nuclear nation is a significant part of its modern history. It began with the vision of Homi Jehangir Bhabha, who, after completing his PhD in nuclear physics from Cambridge University, returned to India in 1939. He was instrumental in convincing then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to start India’s own nuclear energy programme.
In the 1950s, under Bhabha’s leadership, the Department of Atomic Energy was formed, which later saw contributions from notable figures like Raja Ramanna and Homi Sethna. Despite the peaceful intent, India never acknowledged that the 1974 tests in Pokhran, Rajasthan, were for a nuclear bomb. Officially, the test was claimed to be for the use of nuclear explosives in mining and earth moving operations.
India’s stance on nuclear weapons changed over time, especially after witnessing nuclear tests by other countries. On May 11, 1998, India conducted nuclear tests in Pokhran, which were not anticipated by international watchdogs, thereby establishing India as a nuclear power. This move broke the nuclear monopoly of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and marked India’s entry into the nuclear club.
