Hey washoi, thanks so much for the video, it really helped me! I got a cheap lens with fungus all over it and I just finished cleaning it. Now it looks as good as new. I probably wouldn't have had the guts to disassemble it without your video since I've never done this before. Thanks again, greetings from Germany!
NEX users are lucky because they can use most anything with adapters. Mirrorless cameras often have a much shorter register distance than (D)SLRs, 18.25mm in this case, so there's plenty of room for adapters to use Pentax lenses that need 45.5mm. With more adapter types becoming available, even a lot of old glass previously thought to be useless can be recycled nowadays. Which makes me a little envious as a Pentax DSLR user.
Excellent, I had to dismantle my Canon 50mm 1.4 EF recently due to one of the slots the focus dial sits in was bent and it couldn't focus. I didn't have to go taking apart the lens elements, I just hope I wont have to anytime soon. It seems like such a delicate process!
When we introduced our baby to my wife's grandparents, we by perchance came across this lens in their room. Probably untouched for more than 20 years at least. Grandfather gave it to us and only a few weeks ago I realized I could get an adapter and put it on my Sony A7iii ! It's a fantastic lens. The outer ring became loose and I was worried something serious was breaking, but I found this video and it gave me the confidence to open it up! Thank you washoi! It works, no rattle, and the focus and aperture are still pristine!
I had the same problem with an identical lens and I solved it in the same way! those Pentax lens are AMAZING the quality and definition of the pictures is great. And the optics are all optic glass not plastic as new lenses
Thanks for the video washoi, very helpful, I have a mint pentax 135mm 3.5 which has oily blades, watching this has given me the confidence to take it apart and have ago. Cheers
@ngdesign I think I am the same as you! At fhe begining, I didn't know how to disassemble lenses. With taking a video,I can reassemble what it was. Enjoy!
A very helpfull video. I have one of those wonderful lenses, a little ugly from the outside but clean on interior. I hope I never ever have to open it. I can only criticise the body you has mounted it at the end, the lens don´t deserve it
I think they are called calipers, but im having trouble myself finding a set that has the same type prongs, some look to be very sharp/pointy and some have a very wide metal area making it hard to get in the cavity.
many thanks for the video - very useful tipp with using the cap, just cleaned my Pentax - M 1.7/50mm - probably easier to clean than 1.4. For cleaning I used Zippo gasoline and Isopropanol alcohol - with very nice effect.
I have to clean my M28 f3.5. Have you ever cleaned one of these? This video is nerve wracking to watch, but inspires confidence and does not look all that difficult. It looks like you need more patience and care than anything.
Hi Great video! Which is the tool you use to remove the thing that keep the lenses in the lens? I have a Pentax 50mm f/2, and with your video I can dismantled but I couldn't remove the two lenses of the front becuase they were really stucked. Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing tutorial!
Thank you very much!!! you have provided simple yet excellent solution to clening the lwns. My hat off to you. If you have any other tricks please share thesewith us. We do appreciate it!!
@washoi Yes.. that small ball at the side... careful with that... I almost lost that thing the first time I disassembled my lens... Thank You washoi for this very informative tutorial~
I use "Cold Cream" to remove fungi, it needs to be left on for quite a while. You can also use Hydrogen Peroxide apparently, tho I have never used it. It is often more difficult to get the Cold Cream off, than it was to get the Fungus off. Most Fungi I find on Lenses in the UK will come off, I dont know about more humid countries, where it is more of a problem.
Why, like this lens, do I sometimes see (2:32-2:40) the small ends of the aperture blades from the front when usually they are in the rear? Is this a sign the lens has been worked on?
Many thanks Washoi. I hadn't been sure how to get so far into the lens itself to clean all the elements. Now, thanks to your excellent video. I do. You're a star, mate.
@parishouse666 Recentry,I got the same lens MD 50mm 1.4, and tried cleaning the mold in the unit. First, I put the unit in the water, which conains alkaline mold killer. After 4 hours, a half drop of water into the unit, but the mold not was removed. Someday,I will try it again with much concentration mold killer!
sir, after I do this cleaning process of yours im having problem in focus to infinity. in my case when I set ti infinity it wont focus like everything is still blur or not sharp enough, u get my point.| sir, can u do a tutorial on how to fix this issue of mine? i would really appreciate it a lot. thanks!
hye..this video is very interesting, but i have problem to open my Minolta MD 50mm 1:2 f/2.0..i try to follow your step which is to use the aerosol cap, but it doesn't work..now I'm stuck to open it..please help me, dust in my lens made every photo I took looks grain.. :'(
Some lenses have front and back barrel separated so you can acces lenses from before and after aperture separately. But apparently not the one in video.
After I cleaned my lens, I still come back here for the funky music.
Yup, I likes duh music too.
Nice trick with the cup and tape to get the lens ring off. I will remember that one.
Thanks a lot for this. I had fungus on the centre elements and was stumped at how to remove the front centre section. Two M 1.4 lenses cleaned!

You are a life saver :) thanks to you my lens is working like a charm now
It's like watching surgery! A bit scary!
I would have had a system to keep the lenses etc in order and the right way around.
I think they are called calipers, but im having trouble myself finding a set that has the same type prongs, some look to be very sharp/pointy and some have a very wide metal area making it hard to get in the cavity.
Omg i can't imagine to remember all those parts in their position!
great cup and tape tip! you may have inspired me to have a go myself thankyou.
Thank you so much. I was able to clean my lens.
many thanks for the video - very useful tipp with using the cap, just cleaned my Pentax - M 1.7/50mm - probably easier to clean than 1.4. For cleaning I used Zippo gasoline and Isopropanol alcohol - with very nice effect.
I just did mine, thanks to your video. Yeah! $10 from a bin of dirty lenses, now shiny and new.
I have to clean my M28 f3.5. Have you ever cleaned one of these? This video is nerve wracking to watch, but inspires confidence and does not look all that difficult. It looks like you need more patience and care than anything.

This song is extremely relaxing. I think Im going to play it in the background when doing my repairs :D Any chance you know the name of it?
It's on the description of the video
Many thanks Washoi. I hadn't been sure how to get so far into the lens itself to clean all the elements. Now, thanks to your excellent video. I do. You're a star, mate.
I always thought caliper was a measuring tool 😳😥
Very nice. I wish you would be talking as your cleaning to better understand what you're doing. Do you have anything online I can read?

Amazing disassemble VDO. Thanks. How long does it take you for the whole process?
I went for overpriced clean copy but since now I'll hunt for a cheap dirty one of a similar specs then clean it myself. Thanks.
좋은 정보입니다. 항상 좋은 일만 가득하시길바랍니다.
What tool did you use to remove all the parts, a caliper or a spanner wrench?
専用工具無しで分解するところが凄いですね。
gracias por animarme a dañar el lente
Nice job!
What is the metal spanner tool you used to unlock the second element lens?
very nice music
同じレンズを落札したら・・・・カビが酷くてガッカリしてしまいました。

I took off the first plastic ring off using blu tack instead of tape

sir, can u do a tutorial on how to fix this issue of mine? i would really appreciate it a lot. thanks!
If the lens got decentered you cannot fix it if you are not skilled optician. Does your camera has the correct flange distance for the lens?
thankyou for your reference.
@taika2103
but how to get the doublet out?
will you put a link to the tool you used
Hello, please tell, how did you remove the last lens block, you have in hand after cleaning episode at 5.06.
what kind of tool are you using? i need one of those? is it a spanner wrench?
I'm pretty sure after I open up my len like you did, I will not be able to put it back XD
thanks!!
I thought that lenses with smc damaged with fungus can not be cleaned.
anybody know how to get to the fused elements right behind the apperture assembly?
The balsam is messed up and i
need to get them out and re-cement
Neat... I wish I had your skill...
hye..this video is very interesting, but i have problem to open my Minolta MD 50mm 1:2 f/2.0..i try to follow your step which is to use the aerosol cap, but it doesn't work..now I'm stuck to open it..please help me, dust in my lens made every photo I took looks grain.. :'(
does someone know what function that little yellowish half ball has? (on the lens)
そのレンスの上に小さくって、きいろバルありますね。そのバルは何のフンクシオンありますか?してますか?
Pode me ajudar com a desmontagem das lentes do bloco óptico da Sony DSC-H9 da Carl Zeiss?
what screwdriver did you use? I cant find one that fits.
JIS screwdrivers. It's a Japanese standard.
Perfect. Thank you for this vídeo.
can I do this going on through the back of the lens via the mount? was not expecting to have to screw off the front
Some lenses have front and back barrel separated so you can acces lenses from before and after aperture separately. But apparently not the one in video.
Entendi, obrigado pelo esclarecimento.
does anyone know much this lens is worth?
Nowadays, around 100€ on eBay (in Europe). I recently paid mine 95 euros.
