Thank you for sharing your perspectives and for those of you who support us, the passion that we put into our music and performance is real- I'm so glad it's felt. The best outcome is that you love our music as much as we do and we inspire each other to be great! Our band is a true expression of how mariachi has inspired us to fuse together all kinds music with its beautiful instruments, and style at the heart. We are multicultural. We are women of New York City absorbing its diversity and putting it into our sound. It's all about the love of music.
I don't know who is on the guitarron. The violinist is Mireya Ramos. She definitely has pipes and range! Shae Fiol is on the vihuela. Julie Acosta on the corneta. Shae and Mireya co-founded the group. Shae introduced Julie later and here they are. They are true musicians. All three of them can write, compose and arrange music. Composing and arranging might be the same thing, I don't know, I'm not a musician. But the point is that they can write song lyrics, come up with a melody and arrange the melody in a fantastic way. Plus, they have killer voices and play their instruments like nobody's business. They and their music are a mix of Hispanic, Caribbean and American cultures. Mireya is Dominican (mother) and Mexican (her father was a mariachi) raised in PR. Shae is white (mother) and Cuban (father). I can't remember Julie's background. Anyway, these girls are killing it. And you should definitely give them your money. 😁 They have 3 albums out and are Latin Grammy winners-Best Ranchera Album in 2017 for Las Caras Lindas and Grammy nominees in 2020 for a song- Besos de Mezcal and for the album Indestructible.
Man, these women are on fire. Great singing, nice round mellow tone on that trumpet, Afro Blue on a mariachi band! I think their music is way more relevant than any other Mexican artist right now. They made what people like Natalia Lafourcade couldn't do. They just made a new fan.
As a Mexican human being whose roots are firmly founded in the state of Jalisco (the place where Mariachi was born) from both his mom and dad's side, and who drinks tequila and feels Mariachi music in his soul - I officially endorse this as beautiful Mariachi music! Mariachi isn't about technicalities, its about heart...and I feel this!
True Fact: That's not a Mariachi not matter what people says,it's just a mix of mexican rhythms,a bits of soul singing, and some atempt of Mariachi custom clothes ,apart from that..we have here 4 talented singers/musicians that deserves the attention of a lot of people..
My dad died in 2013, he was 96, he and his brothers (my tios) were among the original mariachis of Guadalajara (lago chapala) when mariachi music first evolved from four musician string musicians in the 1930s to a full mariachi band (horns, violins, harp, guitar, guitarita, guitaron) mariachi music in the 40s and 50s. He played with all the pioneers and greats (Pedro infante, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Antonio Aguilar, Pedro infante, and others) after he died the San Francisco mariachi festival of 2014 was dedicated in his honor. My sister wrote a book on his life’s story LOS GUEROS DE LA SIERRA documenting his (and his brother’s) life as a mariachi going back to the beginning of pioneering mariachi music in Mexico. He died a humble quiet old man but at his funeral mariachis from all over Northern California paid him tribute at his burial. RIP Apa. Growing up we didn’t have furniture but our house looked like a music store, I still remember waking up with mi Apa coming home at 3-4am with other mariachis to wheel and deal on selling or buying instruments.
@@matthewchunk3689 thank you. he didn’t originate mariachi music but he was amongst the pioneers of it at the time when it first started evolving. I remember as a teenager back in the late 60s when mariachi music was seen as a cheap mexican restaurant music joke, and feeling a little embarrassed to let my friend’s know my dad was a mariachi because the jokes would come out, and now mariachi music is played and liked all over the world (you tube videos of mariachi flash mob events in cities all over the world). again thank you
What the heck?!?!?!?! At first I was thrown off by hearing traditional mariachi music with a beautiful voice in English, and then my brain was blown away with AMAZING harmonies and a jazzy trumpet, the mix of genres I can't even begin to describe!!!! ❤️🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶 I'm in tears.
I just love this kind of music, as a black man idk why I feel so connected to the sound and style….I guess music that’s great has no barrier! Viva la Mexico
I really want to take my hat off to whomever does the sound mixing for these 'concerts'….their ear is perfect!! Such a great balance between voices and instruments and I know from personal experience that this is not easily achieved…superb job!!
You are totally right. I found a video of these ladies playing at some Berkley radio show. The sound is awful. Their voices are tin-y, the bass is almost not there at all and everything needed to be EQ'd much better, or at all. It would have helped if the ladies played a little better, they seemed tired and didn't have half the energy as in this video. But still, the sound is terrible to be nice. Glad to see others appreciating good sound!
I'll add my voice to +Ian Weiznecker about the mix. These are such great mini-concerts and what a joy to experience material I would not otherwise. Mixing is a science and an art and the engineer "gets it" on these productions.
Wow they did?! Well deserved ! Muy bueno muy bonita! Thanks for the info Karen Jackson, it's gratifying to know that somtimes talent and authenticity wins once in awhile too.
The most badass female groups around. This gave me chills and overwhelmed me with happy tears. They make me proud to be a woman and Hispanic! Yesss ladies!🙌🏾❤️
I am a fussy musical Mexican and all I can say is what a joy and pleasure it is to listen to a Mariachi band with this supreme high level of quality and musicality. You girls are absolutely incredible! Your voices, your harmonies, your groove, your ranges... oh my... I could go on and on. Suffice to say that I had goosebumps all the way. And to the critics out there, you should know that Mariachi came about thanks to a fusion of sorts between spanish, irish, french, mexican, and even gringo instruments & music, so Mariachi is multicultural by nature (if you doubt me check out the work of Anthropologist Jesús Jaúregui who made a thorough research about it). ... as are our food, our textiles and pretty much everything that we are proud of. And I for one could not be happier that Mariachi Flor de Toloache, a female Mariachi band! carries on taking Mariachi music to a whole new dimension. An absolute joy!
Facts!!! Especially the mariachi part. It's a fusion, we've made it synonymous with Mexico but it definitely did not start out as a pure strain of music. And I LOVE what these talented women have done with it! I've seen them 4 times in concert, I have all of their albums and know all of the songs! Amazing!!!!
To all the haters because they are not a "traditional" Mariachi band I have to tell you that they play both traditional and fusion music so Amazingly I saw them perform last night at the San Francisco Symphony Hall and they blew everyone's minds. They are amazing performers, musicians and the first all female ensamble that is off course in male dominated scene. So what if they add different flavors to the mix? They did a "chingon" tribute to Juan Gabriel that gave me real goosebumps!! So please, stop hating, there's enough hatred out there to not appreciate real talent
You wouldn't know what traditional mariachi sounds like so it's best to stop talking if you don't know about Mariachi. Also they aren't the first females in the scene to be recognized as a good group, Femenil Tecalitlan, Mujer 2000, Reyna.
This makes me proud to be Mexican and Latino. I also really love how all 4 of these beautiful and mega-talented women seem to perfectly match their instruments. Wonderful, wonderful performance!!
I always click these videos thinking "alright, I'll just check out the first minute or two..." 20 minutes later, I'm still grooving. Tiny Desk never fails.
Couldn't even wait to finish before typing this: These young ladies are too MF'n dope! The harmonies, musicianship, instrument and vocal solos are soooo strong. Just, wow! One my fave TDs now, can't believe it took me so long to run across this one.
As a 52 year old American (Caucasian) all I can say is this speaks directly to the soul. Passion and amazing talent (should) cross national boundaries.
Just got back from a vacation in Mexico and was promised mariachi by a restaurant, disappointed when two old men came in with a guitar and harp but then got blown away for an hour by sheer talent, memorable.
México is full of rich cultural heritage, including many music genres like "el son, el mariachi, las jaranas, la trova yucateca, el huapango, el fandango, las pirecuas, etc", check them out
FFUUUCCCKKK!!! THE GUADALAJARA SONG WAS AMAZING!! I'm from Guadalajara, y la verdad que bien la interpretaron, recién descubro este mariachi y ya soy su fan! GREETINGS FROM GUADALAJARA, MEXICO!
Lol, i skip foward the cumbia and the guadalajara parts lmao. Don't like that rithym... But im amazed on how jazzy the 1st and 3rd song sound and even more impressed with their vocal skills... Is just fucking mind blowing. I can't believe they're real, and sound like that LIVE! Cheers to mexico for these girls (even tho they said they're newyorkers) and thank god they play jazzy songs :D peace.
Such talent out here on the internet that you never see or hear about in TV or radio. I really appreciate things like KEXP, Jam in the Van, and Tiny Desk; the talent you can find is crazy. Mariachi Flor de Toloache is just phenomenal, beautifully blended vocal harmonies and a fresh new take on traditional Mariachi music, I'm hooked.
Shae, red head, during "Guadalajara," 18:56 climbs up two notes, 19:00-19:05 vibrato of high note, 19:05-19:10, holds and sustains note. Some vocal acrobatics, right there. Wow!
Julie is so adorable!!! I love that I could hear her voice more towards the end. She has a very powerful voice!!! I want to hear her sing lead in a song. Love the last song. Beautifully performed. Way to go gals!!!
Maravilloso!!!
I've never seen a Tiny Desk crowd cheer so much during the actual songs, most of the cheering happens at the end of the songs, but these girls just gave everyone chills!
This made my day! I love bands with talented and fierce female musicians and I love how they also have managed to innovate and draw from Americana and Klezmer too. Tight harmonies and compelling lyrics too. Fantastic stuff!
These ladies beautiful and talented. I loved the nod they give to John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner in the song Dicen, excellent job I hope to them live. Excelente trabajando
So......I can't think of ONE Mariachi band anywhere at any time that I would have stopped and listened to for more than one song. I don't even know of any other Mariachi bands period. Well, now I can say I do! I think this would sound better in the Spanish I'm trying to learn.......Me encanta esta musica!
Mariachi "bands" aren't really a thing, at least not historically. Mariachi musicians are typically hired by artists to play the instruments for them. Juan Gabriel, Ana Gabriel, Rocio Durcal (Spaniard), Vicente Fernandez, etc. are all known for being Mariachi singers but they've never been part of a mariachi"band." Hope that makes sense ;)
Mr Pinkney, bienvenido compadre!! Mariachi music definitely will get the blood flowing. Beautiful voice (male/ female) followed by all the instruments coming together is something that doesn’t get old. I had never heard of these ladies until randomly stumbling on this, I’m pleasantly surprised, they put a good spin to traditional Mariachi music. Check out Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan probably one of the best Mariachi groups to do it🙌🏽 siguele con el Español!! Practice makes perfect 👌🏽 you already speak it better than a few Hispanic friends I have.
@@JoseCastro-bs6iw Thats not true at all Jose, in Jalisco there is plenty of mariachi bands, you also have the most important mariachis in Mexico, Mariachi Vargas de Tacatitlan, Jalisco as well. Is not just a group of musicians, they are a band itself.
Love watching the lead singer oay her guitar and that pick on her finger. Also the chick with the huge bass guitar is soooooo cool. They all are so talented and the harmonies are EVERYTHING!! listen to this at least 10 times a week.
I have made copies Of thier cd’s And passed on to family and friends Enjoyed their concert Too am So impressed Hope they come back San Antonio Tex Am looking out to see If they come here
I can't believe this is over 6 years old! Because of their passion, musicality, and song choice, it's one of my favorites of the Tiny Desk Concert series! Way to go Mariachi Flor De Toloache and NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert series!
You can go to a fashion show in Paris or Milan, and spend thousands of fancy currency to look like something some designer envisioned you should look like, and even than it might be serious mistake. Or you can just put some traditional Mariachi clothes and look like a female superhero, beautiful and powerful. Beauty and music combined at its best.
Holy fricking crap. I keep gettin the crap kicked outta me by the amount of talent here. Super high vocal chromatic scales anyone? Just amazing. THIS should be on the radio.
Been following them since I first saw this performamce on Tiny Desk. Finally in May 2019 I got a chance to experience a live performance. It was a very enjoyable experience I would recomend every one to see these talented performers live..
I saw them for the first time in May of 2019, too. I got to see them again last night! Second live show I've seen since the start of the pandemic. They were great!
I finally found this segment of Tiny Desk! I love these ladies! This is such a great sound. It's definitely not the crew following people around El Restaurante Trampa para Turistas! OMG they are so much fun!
This is amazing music. The talent and skill are beyond measure. This is not a studio creation...the is excellence live. Everyone should know Flor de Toloache. 14:32...incredible.
Every so often I go through random Tiny Desk Concerts at work to help me get through the day and I don't know how it took me so long to find this GOLD. I just fell in love.
What a bunch of beautiful wemon n souls killing it.....phrasing is amazing...had to edit and.add i absolutely cheese up and smile looking at there beautiful happy faces...absolute jewels...
I am so glad to have found this group of fine musicians. Their technical and interpretative are second to none and any genre these girls try would be done with perfection. This is a live concert and all we hear is purely the talented vocals and musicianship of the four women. I am impressed with this concert and will be a fan for life.
The new album is so damn good! I have listened to it 5 times and it gets better each and every time. Simply put these chicks are badass high level musicians that crafted another masterpiece. I hope they get the exposure they deserve.
Wow...I don't know but it seems to me that these ladies are not only talented but formally trained/educated in music. Their execution is immaculate and beautifully done. I enjoyed this mini-concert so much! Mariachi is one of my favorite generes; a legacy my dad left my siblings and me. Bien hecho. Gracias
They are soooo amazing!!! Chica power! The talent on the instruments and those vocals!!! And of course the mariachi outfits are gorgeous and so is their make-up. Guadalajaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaara!!!!! Ay ya yay!!!
I showed this video to ny 6 years old daughter and said "Martina, así es que se escucha una banda con artistas talentosos, porque ellas estan cantando EN VIVO" 😮❤ she totally loved them, specially theit outfits 😅 I am Chilean and my daughter is Brazilian 😉
Los Hacheros brought me here and Tiny Desk. You ladies just blew me away! What voices and music talent!!! This the first time hearing you. I just became a fan. Totally different and loving it.
Wow! Great voices and such skilled players! How come just realize the are such a terrific mariachi band like this. And even got a Grammy award? Well deserved! You guys bring mariachi music to new dimensions! Did I mention they're are all gorgeous?
Great! I was looking for mariachi played by women and I encountered this 4 women mariachi wonderful group! Brave women breaking the tradition of a big group that normally is composed only by males, YES THIS ARE TIMES TO GO BEYOND TRADITIONS AND ADD THE GOOD INTO THEM! Fro those ones who do not like it there are many more who love them, I am 1 of them :) Thanx for sharing otherwise I would never knew they exist! I am a mex woman living in Germany, so ones in a while love to listen mex music but even if they play modern as well is great, I relly enjoy their compositions, great, great, GREAT!
QUE BÁRBARAS...QUE ORGULLO.. CREO QUE SON LAS QUE MAS HAN PRENDIDO A LA AUDIENCIA.. Muchas Felicidades a éste Mariachi.. No le pide nada a Nadie... ojalá vengan pronto a Tampico, Tams saludos
I can literally close my eyes and click any Tiny Desk video and be more than okay with the result.
Bless the truth and accuracy that is this comment

As a 52 year old American (Caucasian) all I can say is this speaks directly to the soul. Passion and amazing talent (should) cross national boundaries.
Wrong. This is mariachi. A music genere older than soul.
@@ruyruxxx3646 I would hardly call what their doing mariachi
@@emiliorivera1614 pues al final es influencia y mucha pero es mariachi.

Those women make me cry of hapiness..and admiration, I love them...pueden hacer llorar de felicidad y admiración...las amo.
Just got back from a vacation in Mexico and was promised mariachi by a restaurant, disappointed when two old men came in with a guitar and harp but then got blown away for an hour by sheer talent, memorable.
México is full of rich cultural heritage, including many music genres like "el son, el mariachi, las jaranas, la trova yucateca, el huapango, el fandango, las pirecuas, etc", check them out
Raping and killing is your only heritage.
@@skrotomon so sad that you think that way, get help.
Would you consider this a mariachi a true mariachi cause I’m personally not getting that from them
I’m sorry but whoever put thumbs down DOESNT deserve to have ears.... go away....
This is AMAZING, all women, I love it!!!
So talented
I agree with you. Good music is for people that has sensibility and good ears.
Cheers to mexico for these girls (even tho they said they're newyorkers) and thank god they play jazzy songs :D peace.
that wasn't even cumbia... look for sonora santanera or Los Angeles azules to know what real cumbia is... well... one kind of real cumbia
Vocals ..yaaas..those harms..killer..tight
look for Carmen Rivero's orchestra, it might change your mind... peace..
te emocionas un chingo
After I listened to this I went and bought the whole album off iTunes. Highly recommended.
Their Linda Ronstadt tribute brought me here. They have gained a new fan!!!!
I am blown away by the talent, creativity, and uniqueness of what I can only call modern Mariachi fusion.
ESTAS TÍAS SON LA HOSTIA! SALUDOS DESDE ESPAÑA, Y MUCHO ÉXITO!
Estas muchachas son fantásticas. Trascienden, actualizan y retan el género. Que bonito.
Oh my god... that just blew my mind. Such passion and skill! What wonderful musicians they are.
The sheer volume of the guitarist's voice creates a trumpet-soundy compression in the microphone. Wow
Its a golpe not a guitar lol
@@rss_r8742 thanks for letting me know.
Lol actually i made a mistake, its a vihuela .
This makes me want to learn spanish and move to mexico.
The song at 5:15 is supreme.
the best one!
Fog Hat / she anounced as a cumbia! " they say the sincere love can make you ver y happy"
so if u think México is just this...
+Francisco tejera I don't.
Fog Hat this is a mariachi malinchista, not original .. Who ver can do whatever they want but this isn't a mariachi is something like jazz
Shae, red head, during "Guadalajara," 18:56 climbs up two notes, 19:00-19:05 vibrato of high note, 19:05-19:10, holds and sustains note. Some vocal acrobatics, right there. Wow!
dude you missed this bit 14:30
This is insanely good! How have I never heard of these amazing musicians?
Ive played this performace, I feel like, over 100 times. I dont know spanish beyond a semester of it, and I know all the words by heart...
That's cool :) Sing your heart out!
These women have some of the strongest voices I’ve ever heard ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m so happy I found this all these years later. These woman sound and play heavenly!❤
Julie is so adorable!!! I love that I could hear her voice more towards the end. She has a very powerful voice!!! I want to hear her sing lead in a song. Love the last song. Beautifully performed. Way to go gals!!!
she belted guadalajara like she caught it smoking
Have seen in concert

Hails from here San Antonio Tex where l saw them beautiful voices

Hmmm
That girl is the most attractive of all of em. The other ones love the spotlight and attention. She's just doing her thing...
Maravilloso!!!
Totally and completely enchanting!!
I've never seen a Tiny Desk crowd cheer so much during the actual songs, most of the cheering happens at the end of the songs, but these girls just gave everyone chills!
Beautiful Mexican culture love you so much, lately undermined by continuous attacks by so many haters
Love! Who cares what "style" it is or isn't? It sounds wonderful.
Saludos y puro NOA noa city
¡Olé pedazo de grupo! ¡Viva la música hispana! ¡Viva México y toda la hispanidad!
12:15-13:50 - I'm pretty sure somebody owes this woman a golden fiddle.
Bro, you got a wonderful spanish, keep doing well, no pierdas la motivación.
Hey, Terrance! One year later, I know, but hope you're killing it with your Spanish by now. If you want to practice, do reach out 🙂
Mr Pinkney, bienvenido compadre!!
@@JoseCastro-bs6iw
Thats not true at all Jose, in Jalisco there is plenty of mariachi bands, you also have the most important mariachis in Mexico, Mariachi Vargas de Tacatitlan, Jalisco as well.
I have made copies
Of thier cd’s
And passed on to family and friends
Enjoyed their concert
Too am
So impressed
Hope they come back San Antonio Tex
Am looking out to see
If they come here
I can't believe this is over 6 years old!
Beauty and music combined at its best.
jaja i really enjoy your comment "put some traditional Mariachi clothes and look like a female superhero"
Yup. Charro outfits are SUPER EXPENSIVE if they are authentic and made by artisans rather than Chinese manufactures.
That's a poem right there already. 👍🏼
Gosh these ladies are amazing! Lead vocals on first song remind me of Lauryn Hill at times.
Holy fricking crap. I keep gettin the crap kicked outta me by the amount of talent here. Super high vocal chromatic scales anyone? Just amazing. THIS should be on the radio.
+Kayla Z Her name is Shae Fiol. She is an AMAZING talent. She also has a solo album called "Catch A Ride", you should check her out!!
Her voice reminds me of nelly furtado's
Omg this is so awesome! It’s like half mariachi half swing music, AMAZING. Call me a fan.
And the trumpet player..... I’m in love.😍
Anyone hating on this has a mind tinier than NPR's desk. Beautiful work, and makes me see mariachi music in a whole different light.

¿Qué es esto? ¡Qué maravilla! Estoy asombrado. Recién las descubro.
Wonderful! The violinist was absolutely stunningly beautiful & talented.
How is it that I've just heard of this group? AMAZING!
Gracias!! :)
It's the kind of band and music that when you listen to it makes your heart happy
Bien hecho. Gracias
it's been a long time since I shed a tear looking at a performance, your talent is incredible
I literally just commented the same thing Haha truly incredible

Girls you rock!! I love you singing and music. It makes want to cry with nostalgia for my birth country, Mexico. Thank you for liking our music.
