Gr Tom (16 jaar)
Because had some problems with my knee after over 800 km in 5 days (and really poor weather) I decided to take a train and cheat on 250 km distance on way back home :) That was very good decision! Even if in my mind was "you cheater! it was to be a BIKE trip all along...!" Happy Birthday Erik! :D
This is something I've had to deal with over the last few months. After Lucia's crash, we got a bus 500km through China to a City to rest up. I had these grand plans to cycle the whole way without getting public transport but things happen and decisions have to be made. The way I see it, you've not cheated at all. There's no medals or awards to be handed out at the end of these journeys. You've made a tough decision based on both of your needs, aims and goals. You're living life and experiencing it in a way that most will never have the opportunity to do. Good on you both for having the maturity to be not too stubborn. Maybe one day if we ever do long solo tours, we can be as stubborn as we want. Another great episode 👍
@DetouringTom Hey Tom!
This wonderful video reminds me of the incredible 2 weeks I spent in Iran in 2018. I would love to return to Iran but unfortunately my British passport prevents me from unaccompanied travel in Iran so cycling is not really an option. I had 3 guides during my tour in 2018 and they are wonderful people and we are still in regular contact.
All the reports that I see of people traveling to Iran say it's a great place to travel. I have lots of fond memories of Iranian people in North Vancouver, Canada.

Please do consider a visit to Iran! It is one of the most special places we have been to in our entire trip. Also thank you so much for your encouraging words 🙏🏼
I really enjoy your story , been watching your clips in the morning when on my trainer, this clip is my favorite so far . . . Freedom in the mountains !
Its so charming that Iranians try so hard to make a strong positive outreach to foreigners. Your experience in Iran seems consistent with the experiences of others.
Hi William, the people are extremely hospitable. It's great to get a sense of what's going on in everyday life, we really enjoyed it but it can also be a little overwhelming sometimes...
At last you were in Iran.. From what I see, just normal and lovely hospitable people. Who would have thought else? Hope we get to see more of Iran, I'm particulary interested! Very nice to see you using the "Cretan" knife I gave to you Eric, cutting banana's. I could almost read the text on the knife! It's like if a very small piece of me is goiing with you both. Good Luck and enjoy every day and night, they will be unforgettable!!! Love, Kees
We use it everyday! Although we lost the knife sometimes, we always got back to search for it (even I got kind of attached to it - M ) It has a special place in our heart! 💛
Not what I was expecting. Iran looks so lovely. Makes me happy to know, despite the news, etc.. and what we are told about other places, that all places have beauty in it's land and it's people! Thank you for sharing your travels, I have learned a lot. 😊
This video looks like a friend of mine (he was born in Teheran) allways told me about the Iran. Funny, clever, modern people. Nice Video, thank you for showing.
Amazing Country and people! Happy 40th Birthday Eric 🎂🎉 What ever decisions you both made to take the train I'm sure there was a good reason. In bicycle touring you are in control and can decide on anything you want. Be safe and enjoy the beauty and hospitality of Iran.

Iranian people seem to be so welcoming, i have watched videos of many travelers and the story is always the same. Visiting Iran is on to of my list for bike tour destinations. Thanks for sharing these awesome experiences with us.
Now that looked like a good time. You both made some great decisions there and in the end worked out for the best. Take care and we're enjoying your journey very much. Take care, Al
It definitely did! We just flew back to colder weather again, so we have to get used to that 😬 It's better for cycling though, and it reminds us like home, haha!
Another great video! Lucia here (from 'Cycling Two') - I always look forward to watching your videos when they are released. It looks like absolutely the right decision to get the train and well deserved. That hike looked like so much fun! A great feel-good ending to the video.
Hey Lucia, thanks a lot! Same for us, your video's are quite addictive! :-) Yes it was definitely the best decision, we just flew from Oman to Georgia so we're back to the cold again. Quite a big change in many ways... Where are you at the moment?
@@WheelstoWander We are currently in Laos, although we're cycling into Cambodia tomorrow. The weather is crazy hot here - highs of 40 degrees midday! Hope the weather's not too cold in Georgia - I've heard it's a beautiful country to cycle through, hope it's going well!
Hi Lucia! Wow, thats hot! Humid as well I guess? We are now on a saddle next to a big pile of snow. Maudi just made a hot bottle to warm up her wet feet. Georgia is special, quite poor and with lovely hospitable people. Definitely got it’s own unique vibe. Warm happy Welcome from the local people, such great hospitality and lots of Fun vibes :) Your travel experience in Iran changed my whole perspective of this country the Media made look so bad and dangerous.
I’m glad you guys had a great time in my gorgeous country Iran.aside from politics, sanctions, financial & other obstacles Iranians have deal with every day , people are very hospitable & friendly especially towards foreigners & their guests plus so much cleaner compared to neighboring countries! You need to visit my beautiful hometown of Gorgan in northern part of the country with very green high mountains & super nice people 👍❤️
Great video!!! We found out that there is nothing like a cheat on a trip, because it’s your own way of travel and if it is alright for you, it’s fine! There is nothing to justify about it ;-) hope to meet you on the road!!
Thanks guys! You are absolutely right but we can't help but feel we cheated a little bit... That feeling will pass ;.) Where are you heading to now? Too bad we missed each other in Oman. Tailwinds all the way...
I find it amazing to see that the local people in countries like turkey or iran speak better english than people over here in spain. You would not expect that, and everybody is friendly and open. That says a lot of the arabian culture, we often critize wrongly over here in the west.
the dude. The culture of hospitality and kindness in the Middle East is not an Arabic or Turkish culture. For Iranians, this is a deep and traditional culture that is more than 2500 years old It is a Persian/Aryan culture
Yes, I guess that most distance riders feel that using public transportation is "a cheat." My solution has been to make sure that my side-trips more than make up for the miles skipped by sitting on a train or bus. So yes - I flew ("cheated") from Dubrovnik to Athens, but then I looped the Peloponnese, which I felt was a much better use of my time.
Really enjoyed the video! Hope you have a good time in Georgia too. Are you just heading east from there or taking a tour in the country? In case of the latter, Svaneti (Mestai, Ushguli) is something you don't want to miss. Or the untamed Tusheti north-east. Have fun guys! :-)
Thanks a lot Niels! Is that the Zagari pass you're talking about? We were planning to make this loop but we also heard there's a big chance that the high mountain passes will be closed in March. The alternative plan is to go west from Tbilisi through Borjomi national park to the coast, cycle north from Batumi to Poti and back via Zoegdidi and Koetaisi. Any thoughts on that? After that we will cycle through the valley of the Alazani river and will cross the northernmost border with Azerbaijan.
Did you guys arrive in Georgia yet? Sorry for my late reply! Yes, it's the Zagari pass that I mean! I was there in June, so I can imagine May might be closed. I think the part Zoegdidi - Mestia should be open, also in the winter. Mestia is beautiful as well, but I can imagine it sucks for you to have to cycle back down to Zugdidi. Batumi is interesting, but very different from the rest of (rural and old timely) Georgia (it's a modern beach resort with skyscrapers. Sort of Las Vegas at the Black Sea). The route through Bordzjomi and Achaltsiche is also nice (less mountainous, so it should be open in winter). Kutaisi was not that interesting to me, but Gori was. Gori is the birthplace of Stalin and it houses a really interesing museum about him. Also, just east of Gori is 'Uplistsikhe'; a city that was carved out in caves; very interesting to see! Just near Tblisi there is Mtscheta, with a beautiful old monastery and old town. From Tblisi the 'Military Highway' that leads straight north to the Russian border is interesting, but probably a bit off-route.
Hi Niels! Thanks for your tips! We went through Beautiful Mtscheta and took a backroad to Gori! Beautiful cycling, a bit cold now though. We are heading to Zugdidi and perhaps Poti... we hear that in Mestia there is still 2 meters of snow so people tell us not to go... Wonderful and generous people, we are having a great time 👍🏼 Thanks again! Take care! E&M p.s. We will take a look at that military road when we get back to Tbilisi!
Hi guys hope you visit Morocco one and taza more specifically, it is A city located in North Central Morocco ,about 120 kilometers of fez and 210 kilometers west of oujda, city of taza and the largest underground cave network in North Africa ,the friouato caves .the city has a beautiful landscapes and worth to visit ,welcome my dear friends any time you want. hei you two. nice to watch your journey bicycle tour around the world. very inspiring. mostly you sleep in the tend, in a view moment i see you sleep in the hotel. when you sleep on the tend, where you get the electricity to charge your camera device or anything else?
Hey Pacet, thanks a lot! We sleep more often in a hostel then we show in our video's, but the majority we sleep outside. We have a few powerbanks which we charge whenever we have electricity and they last us quite a while. The laptops can't be charged that way so we don't use them that much in the tent.
Guys, You know its nice to be important, but its important to be nice, seems to me no matter where you go in life, you meet really nice people and is wonderful to see. Please may I ask what tent you are using on your adventure? Take care guys, have fun.
That's a beautiful way to put it! It's mind blowing to experience all the kindness and generosity in every country we go. Our tent is a Marmot Vapor 4P, you also have a variety with a mesh inner tent which might have better airflow: 'Marmot Tungsten'.
The majority of the people is wonderful, there are few countries we've gone through that didn't have something to complain about their government... In some places worse than others. It shows us that the way things are arranged in the Netherlands are pretty good (and we do like to complain a lot, especially about the weather ;-)
(Going by the literal meaning of the word cheated) I have never seen any tourist being cheated/duped by an Iranian. Probably one of the safest places in the world for adventure.
Hi Darryl! Iran feels very safe indeed. The title is 'We Cheated' and is about our cycle journey being continued by train. So we felt we kind of cheated...
@@WheelstoWander yes i get that, i was talking about how hospitable Iranian people are. You can easily get cheated or swindled in south Asian countries All the best for your journey. You both make a great couple!
Toward the beginning of the video you said "mamnoon" as in thank you and the guy said no. He is crazy, we all use that word all the times. I don't know whom he was trying to impress.
Beautiful trip, beautiful people, beautiful country. I had a guided tour planned for last year but cancelled due to Trump ruining Iran/US relations and the possibility that I’d be detained at customs and possibly arrested. Can’t say that I’d blame them.
Did you ever "cheat" or change your original plan drastically? What did you change and why?

Thank you.
Toppers!
Dank je wel :.) Hug
Haha, i had that so often that some people said "mamnun" and the others "no,its sepas" :)
Hi Sebastian! Haha, yeah it was really confusing what different people in the end used for 'thank you'. We never figured it out!?
@@WheelstoWander and many people in the bigger cities, especially the younger ones, prefer "Merci",too.
Fascinating country. :)
Next on my travel list if the CoVid finishes. Awesome effort . #BromptonShrink
Iran is a great place! Lot's of Fun for the Future 😉
You show me the meaning of life. No gods, no religions..people like you show us lesser mortals what matters in life
Thans for the beautiful words Dennis! 🙏
Nice😃😃😍😍
😊
Just shows you its regimes that are the problem everywhere in the world, not the majority of ordinary people.
The majority of the people is wonderful, there are few countries we've gone through that didn't have something to complain about their government... In some places worse than others. It shows us that the way things are arranged in the Netherlands are pretty good (and we do like to complain a lot, especially about the weather ;-)

Thank You Vik Vik 😊
Hacer kilómetros en tren?así se puede llegar al infinito

(Going by the literal meaning of the word cheated) I have never seen any tourist being cheated/duped by an Iranian. Probably one of the safest places in the world for adventure.
Hi Darryl! Iran feels very safe indeed. The title is 'We Cheated' and is about our cycle journey being continued by train. So we felt we kind of cheated...
@@WheelstoWander yes i get that, i was talking about how hospitable Iranian people are. You can easily get cheated or swindled in south Asian countries All the best for your journey. You both make a great couple!
Wanderful!!Q pun intended 😬
😊 Nice one 👌🏼
Toward the beginning of the video you said "mamnoon" as in thank you and the guy said no. He is crazy, we all use that word all the times. I don't know whom he was trying to impress.
Hmm I don't know... we heard mamnoom almost everywhere in Iran!
@mountain fog I didn't say it wasn't Arabic. I said we use it all the times.
prachtig!
Dank je🙏
iran knows how to party, well done....i dont call it cheating coz it was needed given with particular situation
We agree! a little cheat in our eyes but nothing to worry about. A good lesson in "go with the flow" 😉
Prachtig!
Heel blij mee, Dank je!
Graag gedaan en nog gefeliciteerd! @@WheelstoWander
😊 Merci, ericM
mamnoon=Arabic // sepas=Iranic, lol, good point :)
I am Malaysian, out of one thousand ladies in Malaysia you could hardly found one who would want to cycle like that with you
Thank you competezione! We're planning on discovering Malaysia in the future! There must be someone out there who's longing for adventure 😊
@@WheelstoWander you are most wecome to my wonderful place
Beautiful trip, beautiful people, beautiful country. I had a guided tour planned for last year but cancelled due to Trump ruining Iran/US relations and the possibility that I’d be detained at customs and possibly arrested. Can’t say that I’d blame them.
Sorry to hear that Vincent! You would have loved Iran, don't give up visiting one day!!
USA Government justifiably held in contempt by so many citizens of the world, including here in Orstraya
🇮🇷I miss homeland
Hi Matthew! We can imagine 🇮🇷 All the best! E&M
@@WheelstoWander thank you. We love you ❤️❤️
But there is no cheating in video
Cheating cycling by taking the train ;.)
@@WheelstoWander glad, u reply

If you get a chance you should try to travel the mission of Jesus Christ; God's lands are life changing :)
Who knows, perhaps it will cross our path someday.
