Holy Hannah! I have been looking for a specific obituary for 5 months with no luck. while the video was STILL going, I tried the name search in google books, with the quotation marks, newspapers, and boom! An obituary that answered no less than 3 research questions, and provided names of previously unknown siblings. bonus newspaper articles regarding overseas travel for the target individual. Thank you so much! ** 2 hrs later update: have now found 4 total obituaries for this family!**

Google Books is such an important source - I always find something surprising. Recently, I found records from the Baltimore City Fire Dept showing addresses of building fires in the early 1900's - and there was my great-great uncles' bakery. Not only did it have his name and names of family members, but the fire was described as the "second chimney fire" in the bakery. Cool stuff!

Thank you so much, Lisa!!! As soon as I heard your tip about Google newspaper archive being searchable in Google books to pinpoint ancestors in newspapers, I immediately paused your video and flew to my computer to search for my relatives in the Lodi Sentinel! It was like Christmas for me!! Previous to this hint from you, I had been methodically going through each Lodi Sentinel newspaper page by page starting in 1915 in Google newspaper archive trying to find articles on my great great grandma Laura Allyn and her McEwen sons who lived in Lodi. So, your tip just saved me so much time!! I was able to find articles that solved some mysteries for me!! Plus find some other really interesting info I wasn't expecting such as all the various types of poultry she raised and a really thorough description of her property! I can't thank you enough!!! I was able to finally fill some big gaps in the timeline for my great great grandma and round her out some more. Love it!!! Thank you!!

I have the family Bible from my paternal grandmother’s side. She got it from her mother, but it was from her father’s side. My great grandfather’s weight at birth was noted. He was the 2nd oldest (and 2nd oldest son) of 15 children. He weighed in at 10 1/2 lbs at birth. My poor great great grandma! She had to be one sturdy woman!

This is the first time I have watched you. I will definitely be trying Google Books. And thank you for the program notes! I was just thinking, "I'm going to have to watch this again and take notes," when you mentioned the Show Notes. Hooray! I will check them out. My husband's grandfather was involved in the manufacture of a steam-powered car. (He lost a lot of money there!) I wonder if he would be mentioned in that automotive journal you mentioned! BTW the video ended when you were still telling that fascinating story about your birth certificate!

In regard to "Surprises": In DNA client contracts, according to Standards for BCG and Ethics policy for Association for Professional Genealogists, it is ethical and good practice to have a statement that says "Client is aware that there may be surprises as a result of DNA testing and the Client can choose whether or not they want to know" and "Client understands Genealogists are not responsible for acting as an intermediary for resulting surprises from DNA, the client is responsible for direct contact for potential birth family"

    • @gwynnsocolich7271

Some Genetic Genealogists will act as an intermediary for clients and matches or birth family.

Great episode, as usual your topics seem to be mirroring things I need to learn more about, todays episode was exactly that. The night before this episode I had googled a head line from a newspaper clipping a cousin shared with me from around 1906, two things happened and both are in Google books, I just did a general google search, but google books was listed for two of the top results, one for a book this cousin had written and I've read, but another book popped up also, I ended up buying that new book, but now I'm going back to google books to see what else might be hidden there in regards to this particular newspaper clipping, which there were numerous results at newspapers.com for too. Family history is amazing, we each hold a small hint to the bigger story and if we don't share that tiny piece they story could die away. Thank you for all you do.

The exact order of results will vary by user based on Google's algorithm. Be sure to use the search operators I used and also the Tools button to filter down only to free ebooks. I just ran it again and the item came up as the third result this time. Again, the algorithm behind-the-scenes decides what you get each time.

Hi Lisa, I enjoyed your episode 30..I watched it Saturday, October 24th in the evening. I can't wait to use all your tips using Google Books. I am glad you are the only Lisa Louise (and what a nice story your Dad gave to you) because you are definitely the BEST, One of a Kind Genealogist wiz!! I have loved all your podcasts, webinars, and now the Elevenses series over the years. I just watched and enjoyed your episode 15, Learning from History on my Heritage.com a few weeks ago. I am a dues paying member of my Heritage .com and receive emails from them all the time. I really enjoyed your information as I really haven't mastered their genealogical site. Every little bit helps! I am also a dues paying member of Ancestry.com since 2006.
You are such a delightful and interesting person. I love listening to your topics...your voice is so soothing. I learn so much listening to you! Your personal family experiences are so interesting, too! And I truly love your notes to fill in my empty spaces I have missed on the video.
    Thanks again, Lisa.

When you are looking at a digitized book and you see a search box on the left side of the screen, then you are looking at the older Classic version. Google tends to roll out changes over time for different users. Also, some materials (like the example I gave of newspapers) may still appear in Classic view even if you see the new version with other books. The good news is that the same functionality exists in Classic, it's just sometimes located in different parts of the page.
