I recall seeing a video of guy in India knapping stone points, but I can't remember where I saw it. You have link to that video? Would be interesting to watch.
Revolutionary! you might try a smaller point on the steel. I've been using a knife point as a pressure tool for fine work inside the notches, get stalling out much much less.
"Grippy" materials grab the edge of the stone better better. Hardened high carbon steel is difficult to work stone with because it is slick and doesn't want to grab
So... Pausing halfway through so maybe you address this and I haven't got there yet but... why do all that filing when you have the smaller one there and a hole already drilled for it? Seems way easier to swap out the tool... Also, only been knapping since July but this changes everything.
Hey what kind of chert is that and where exactly did you get it. It sounds like you are saying rimolo ebay chert. Ibe googled it and nothing comes up. Its gorgeous rock and id like to get some

@KnapperJackCrafty if you have a DSLR, you can deepen the focal length (F-stop 8 or higher) so more of the shot is in focus when using manual. Zoom in and manual focus on your subject, then zoom out to the shot you want. Also, you can move the camera away from the subject and crop in to the shot you want using your video editor software (you'll lose some resolution though). Keep up the good work!
After five minutes measuring the angle, and as many measuring the edge width, when you pulled out the scale and weighed the arrowhead... I damn near screamed. But no worries, cool technique.
So frustrating watching you do it backwards. I can see if the rod faced away from you you would be able to see it much better and hold the work more level ;)
Always learning, always sharing what you have figured out with us, thanks patrick

True
Can you elaborate? What kind of knife point?
Im going to try that, but with a sharpened nail. Cheers Patrick
Sounds good. 👍
Cool!! A mid day upload!
You should be cheering that this is the first reverse indirect percussion video of this type (new and American made) on youtube.
Heck yeah I'm def gonna try this method.
Excellent Patrick
Thank you
Very interesting indeed
I would love to see how this technique works with an obsidian workpiece.
Very soon
You Just want to see if I get glass in my eye, don't cha. 😂
I wonder how different diameter nails with the head cut off would work.
The same. It's all mild steel.
You should look into ordering some high carbon steel rods they should wear significantly slower than the mild steel you are using. Really cool video
I've tried the high carbon steel. Even though it doesn't wear down easy, I have to admit that the knapability is better when the steel is softer.
"Grippy" materials grab the edge of the stone better better. Hardened high carbon steel is difficult to work stone with because it is slick and doesn't want to grab
You did it thank you so much for making this video!!
You're very welcome
This is GENIUS!!
I guess you could suspend your knapping assembly from the rafters while hanging from your ankles while blind folded. But I ask why?
Hehe... 🤣
Can definitely put your eye out.

The thicker steel is more sturdy than the thinner. The thinner rod tends to vibrate. I already tried it.
@@KnapperJackCrafty Totally makes sense! Maybe shorten the rod? Would force you to choke up on the log, but would probably vibrate less.

I wonder if you glue a piece of hard leather to the tip of your antler you could tap harder on a thicker piece?
Probably, yes. But percussion acts funny if there's too much shock absorption.
Jay Jay will do it
🤣
great vid.,.,what if you held the arrow head with leather.,.,tkzz for sharing.,.,peace
I could do that.
Interesting
That is totally different. I’ve heard of reverse knapping but I’ve not seen it done before. Really odd.
Yes, but it seems to work well. (With thick pieces)

If you move your hands in front of the camera often, turn off the camera's auto focus
I need the auto focus because I've tried the manual focus, and I have to adjust it dozens of times per video. It's very distracting.

You can advance the video by draging the little red dot at the bottom of the screen and skip the parts you don't see any knapping.
This guy uses a protractor the same way I do 😂 unfortunately they’re a mystery to me as well
😆

Yeah, but I'm going to have to make the adjustment. I've got about 20 more of these reverse indirect videos in the pipeline. 😁
