Patrick have a look at ' The Amesbury Archer' Stunning Beaker burial...with a bunch of arrowheads too. Or British museum Beaker stuff🤔. This dark chalk flint is hit or miss pat. Some can be clean of concrete...most isn't though. They nearly always turn to concrete towards the core. That clean cortex material is nice though. This chalk flint varies massively in consistency, colour. One nodule from a face can be superb and the next can be the polar opposite. It can also change between bands in a chalk face with the depth. Stacks of variation in colour too. Yours and Danny's just happened to be similar nodules of similar chalk flint. I've been putting a box together for a while now...too long. I'll try and get some variations in colour and material. The Norfolk flint David sent is highly regarded as some of the best quality. Well done David for sending the flint. It's a great seeing you work this rock pat. I'll be watching these ones on repeat 😊

That was an ocd video. I know it would be a fantastic knife. However, I will wait for the next one. If I hit that rock as many times as you did, I would be disabled. You are one tough guy. It was beautiful. I don’t mind thicker knives. I like plenty of room to move for resharpening. You are remarkably resilient.
I saw a guy use a thick putty to give support and add mass , he also sandwiched a flat rock with a thin leather strip , clamped the point with his hand against the leather to facilitate longer flakes on different size work pieces. The putty enabled him to make long, thin , narrow points , 11 to 1 ect .
Paleomanjim also showed that ' sandwich' method too. This material usually does throw long flakes. This material is my local material and I think Pat's just got a stubborn piece here. I was waiting for him to use pressure and be amazed.

marden henge style , nice. book recommendations "prehistoric flintwork" by Chris Butler has loads of info on uk flint types and lithics made from it "The ancient stone implements, weapons, and ornaments of Great Britain" by John Evans again , lots of info on uk stuff. there are lots of of flint types in the uk , true black chalk flint "floorstone" , white chalk flint, grey chalk flint, honey chalk flint, greensand chert, bullnose flint, flint with clays , flint in hardened chalk/limestone , portland chert (not your portland) random other cherts like lowland scottish chert(border chert) , random other minor chert all over and jaspers /agates and carnelian and scottish north eastern chert/flint plus glacial /prehistorically imported irish flint/chert .. Most of these sources are documented but nobody exploits them or works much apart from english grey in many various grades
Very sweet looking british flint. This darker color flint looks like British flint that Will Lord knaps in his videos. The stone age studies are interesting, humans around the world making tools in very different methods and achieving the same results: brontosouis steaks like on the flintstones😮🤣🤣 British flint was used for gun flints. I've found some of these gun flints while looking for arrowheads, but they were of a honey colored. I believe the gun flints I found were French made. Michigan was settled earlier by the French fur traders. Super video.😮😊👏👍😃
I sure that flint would make great rifle and musket flints. A lot of black English flint was found around Brandon England. Ancient pit flint mines are still in that area today.
I have found many small cores and blocks of what I am very sure is dark gray english flint in northern Indiana. I have saved most of them but knapped a few that are not cores. They are usually about 2 inches in all directions. They are extremely tough. I've only used abo tools to knapp them and it's a horrible struggle. Prime candidates for heat treating. They are so dense they don't seem to suffer from freeze cracking. I believe them to be of major historic value due to the fact that it seems likely that they were carried by soldiers so they could make new flints in the field. Just a hunch that makes sense.
There's a possibility the long barb was whipped to the arrow shaft. Also i think the barb flares out the other way at the tip of the barb which would make sense. So you get an oblique point and a barb that's sticking out further up the arrow shaft when hafted and whipped. You mentioned the barb was straight on the original and on the diagram i saw that's the reason they think it was likely whipped to the arrow shaft with just the tip of the barb sticking out at about 45° from the shaft.
Yeah, I've heard that theory but I don't think it makes sense to spend that much time, skill, and material making a long barb only to have it be a very weak connection to the arrow shaft that isn't needed.

To whip that thin barb is asking for trouble. It might not have been meant to be shot is another theory just showing the knappers skill. We certainly did like a microlith sticking out the side of a shaft back in the day,so I've always thought this might've been a new snazzy way a knapper tried to do that microlith/barb up the shaft of the arrow. An all in one arrowhead/microlith thing😂
