Thanks! My family of 4 are planning to take up snowboarding in the 2022-23 season and the beginner videos are great. If I can offer one suggestion it would be to put the videos on your playlists in logical order for binge watching.
As weird as it might sound, you feel more balance at higher speeds. Bend your knees (not at the hips) and get lower to the ground as well for more stability!
The 3 tips that helped me the most as a beginner: 1. point your front arm in the direction you want to go (this keeps your shoulders stacked over your knees, giving you much better control and smoother turns) 2. put more weight on your front leg than you think you should, especially when initiating a turn (this keeps you from spinning out and falling on your butt) 3. go as fast as you can while still feeling somewhat in control (this helps you to make wider, cleaner turns, and it makes you less likely to catch an edge)
Thank you so much man! This really helped me out on the first day and I basically can run the Blue trails now just by turning on the heel and toe edge!
I had a similar lessons....my sister took me along when I was younger.....she came with me for like one run and then ditched me to go off somewhere......I struggled through it just emulating the people who looked like they knew what they were doing and ended up learning to carve....ended up getting addicted and getting good and my sister switched to skiing lol
One of my biggest tips when helping beginners is to stop on the hill and practice holding your heel edge in a stop and pressing each foot down independently. Kind of like a gas pedal on each foot. If you push down on the left foot, you'll go left, same for the right. Flip around and face uphill on the toe edge and try that with the heels. Having a park board with lots of flex helps understand how the torsion of the board dictates direction.
The toughest part of learning for beginners is the speed. They always think they’re going a lot faster than they are. Your friend skis so he doesn’t have that problem. That run you’re teaching him on is too mellow. He can get off the chairlift which means he can do tougher runs. He needs help from the mountain to link turns.
Hey, I have this problem on using the mountain to link turns as well. For example when I'm riding heelside perpendicular on the slope and try to go on my toes w/out actually going down and linking into a S turn I eat shit almost all the time, any help?
@@joshyouuuua you cannot fight the mountain because you will always lose. If you’re riding down heel side, release the pressure off your heels so you point your front foot downhill. Then shift the pressure to your toes. Once you’re on your toes, initiate your shoulders, hips, knees and toes to turn on your toe side.
Thank you, dude! Your tips helped snowboard on my very first day! Within 2-3 hours I was linking turns and picking up quite a lot of speed! Of course I also had some mean falls... Lol. But your explanations of the basics helped me have a very clear idea of what to do and how to start. You saved me a couple of days of struggling and falling which would probably get in the way of me enjoying snowboarding. Now, I've just transitioned from ski to snowboard inn one day thanks to you!! Cheers!!!
@needum9212 not sure but I used to snowboard maybe 5 days a season first 2 3 seasons, when I got comfortable was season 3 4 after 15 20 days, but i could have fun and go after my friends on the second season, I would suggest going on a trip not doing what i did on the weekends, if you go on longer trips you will get there quicker, ive seen frends start to snowboard and after a week they were doing reds preety good so just go out there and do miles.
@ cool I’m think I’m going with friends every weekend then at the end of January we are going to whistler. So hopefully I can be somewhat decent by then
Sometimes, if youre okay on mellow runs and technique is good, youve just gotta throw yourself into it. Had that with a couple diamonds last weekends i come across and just had to get into it. All worked out fine and once on it, i didnt feel out of control
I remember being told to hold my arms out and point your front arm the direction you want to go. Must have been good advice because I caught on the first day, that was 20 years ago.
Great videos! I Love how you break the skills down. The lessons I’ve had were rushed and scary. I will definitely be studying these videos before I head out again. I need you as my teacher. Your calm energy will chill me out!
Starting out I just got out on the slopes and fell HARD for about half a day before I really caught on. No training for me whatsoever. Now i'm hitting jumps and doing 180s and 360s pretty comfortably! It really is an easy sport to get a hang of once the basics are down. It also helps having some experience with wakeboarding and surfing.
Yeah that’s like with me too I started on my own I had friends but they didn’t help me but I could turn and do stuff naturally since I wakeboard and wakesurf in the summer. But honestly I think I’m weird because I could do turns and I did jumps and went to the park the first day within a couple hours. I didn’t do amazing on the jumps but I could do them which I think is decent for only having 3 hours of experience. But everything just came so naturally it was crazy no one believe me it was my first day.
2:08 the amount of times your voice played in my head "just let the turn come around" when I was snowboarding for the first time lol. It helped every time though
That snow is great. First time I tried snowboarding today. Early morning snow was hard as a rock. Kept on catching the edge when going from the toe side position to straight for the J turn. I'll try again soon but in the afternoon instead. Hopefully snow is better.
awesome dude!!! love your videos!! keep them coming.. will be using them this season to learn snowboarding lol!! gonna show the wife and kid also we all converting to snowboarding this season lol.
What you said about time off is absolutely correct. In fact more important than a break is sleep. Your body naturally runs through and solidifies muscle memory in your sleep. So consistent practice followed by good nights sleep will yield better muscle memory and faster results!
These vids are awesome. Thank you for sharing. About to finally get back on a board after 20 years, forgot all the little nuances that go in to snowboarding
god i do not miss having to get back up all day while learinng. couldn't walk after my first 3 full days but i could do blues by the end. Now im at the stage where I look back and it was just worth it
He has a video where he teaches how to progress your turns on greens, blues, and blacks. There's also a video of him coaching is girlfriend on a double black - there's a lot of tips in there
I watched this before heading up to teach myself again. Finally linking my turns and feeling more confident! Thank you for this video. I would love to hear more about distributing weight between your feet. I feel I have to put most on my front foot to get the board to start going back down hill so I can get from edge to edge, then shift to my back foot to start spraying snow for a turn.
I found it's more even weight when beginning, and they tell you to put your weight on your front foot to keep the same pitch as the slope when going straight. You shouldn't be spraying or skidding, you should be carving. I found I was skidding in the beginning because I didn't understand that as you go faster, you simply make an edge change before facing down hill. The key is to change edges when your board and sliding direction are all inline. If you change edges when your board i skidding or crooked, you will probably catch an edge. If you think of the turn like a half circle, experienced riders change edges at the top of the circle, not on the side. Also, squat for heel edge, knees to the ground for toe edge. Good luck this season!
Tour videos are really enjoyable, I'm slowly sifting through them, but any pointers on how to get off a chairlift without fail, I always end up in the snow with a bunch of unimpressed people behind me
for me the rope tows are much much more of a nemesis, coming off a chair lift is not that hard after you do it just a few times, the only exception is if there's ice at the place you're getting off, then it might be more problematic
I just feel that I constantly have to have my board on a heel or toe edge, if I just ride straight for a sec with the board flat, it’s like I get stuck in a rut and instantly fall. Is that normal? Are you suppose to always be on like an edge? (Idk if I’m wording it right, but you all get it)
Going from one edge to the next is a good goal. Spraying snow out the side of your toe turn, then spraying out the heel turn. Being able to ride straight and flat is a good skill to have too.
When I started my bindings were at a "duckfoot" angle where the toes point away from each other. It's really all preference and how you're comfortable. As you start to get better though the bindings should be more perpendicular to the edges on your board so you have a more balanced stance between using heel and toe edges.
watching this just for two reasons: a) no snow now so kinda fantasizing b) remembering the good first days on the board PS* there's NO way he fell so little
day 1 of snowboarding with a good teacher: "grrr i keep falling, this sucks, i can't even turn, i'm never going to learn this >.< " day 5 with a good teacher: "I'M MOVING TO COLORADO NEXT MONTH CYAAAA" surfing is the same way. once you're bit by the stoke, you're done. there's no going back to being a normal person ever again.
Lol I have no room to talk because I’m fairly inexperienced but I remember the first time I snow boarded my dad taught me how to stand on the board and then took me to the top I fell a lot but now I’ve only gone 2 times and I can ride down the mountain fast and confident as well as jump and board slide ( I have a heavy background in skating and surfing)
I'm still fighting with toe edge turn locking into a carve instead of drifting and rotating, least steep slope, almost flat. Sometimes it helps to bend knees more and reach forward with my arms. Can this balance trick develop into a bad habit?
(Not a pro but ive been snowboardig a while now) Bending the knees more is actually a good habit but your back should more or less stay at a 90 degree angle with your board. So if youre reaching for the snow by bending your back it maybe is a bad habit... But than again if you're carving hard you can reach the snow without bending your back so maybe its not that bad 😁

As a new snowboarder my greatest obstacle is getting over my fear of speed. :(
it will become more natural the more time you have on your board and gain better edge control.
As weird as it might sound, you feel more balance at higher speeds. Bend your knees (not at the hips) and get lower to the ground as well for more stability!
Yewww
One step at a time, you can't take short cuts.
me too... the speed scares me.. and the thoughts of falling hard :(
