    My sister just went to a cruise to Falmouth Jamaica and she was so so surprised at the high price of food. The food prices are higher than in the US. We as Jamaicans in America are all wondering how the average Jamaican survive. It is unacceptable why the price of food and goods are so high in Jamaica.

      Rental and mortgages are just as high in Jamaica, just as USA, or even more. I watch the realtor channels in Jamaica every week and am surprised by how expensive rentals, mortgages, and food are.The cheapest place to live right now is Panama. Jamaica is out of control, especially for poor people!!

      I live in Trelawny and things are very different here from North America. Yes food prices are high because of tourism (higher demand from hotels than supply) but most Trelawny people can access natural/unprocessed foods from farms or back yards. I personally have a hard time giving away mangoes, june plum and ackees that grow in my yard. It's just too much and they go to waste. We can go to the beach on a Sunday and load up on fresh fish, crab and lobster when the fishermen come in. We can get ground food from people in top Trelawny; yams, sweet potato etc, Don't judge our lifestyle by what you see on the surface, there is nobody going hungry here. Tourism is booming and people are doing well. People who live in developed countries tend to judge how others are doing based on how their own societies are organized, but they are missing so much because they don't understand how it is when you co-exist with nature and everything doesn't come from a supermarket. Don't think that because you don't see amazing infrastructure that everyone is poor and suffering, many are living a much better lifestyle in terms of their access to beautiful beaches, mountains, rivers and nature in general, than people abroad.

      @@feonasmith9226no disrespect to you lady but me along with all my family in the US, if and when we move back to Jamaica we not going to live in Trelawny. We born and grow a Pembroke Hall and we would be moving back to the suburbs or hills of St Andrew. Places like Jacks Hill or Cherry garden or Norbrook, Havendale. Jamaicans overseas who want to move back to uptown Kingston is concerned about the price of food and cost of living. We not interested in the country living. Some people like country and that’s ok but we talking about city living. This video was talking about Kingston city living.

    Sir, most people in Jamaica have a yard where they can plant tomatoes, limes. Bell Peppers, fruits, etc. I can get limes for 25 cent each. You can get broccoli for less than 2 dollars. Other veggies and fruits are inexpensive and taes are not paid on produce. At least where I live. The east coast like New York is costly.

    If you are saving for a property what the property might cost today is going to be more in a year, So it’s best to add at least 10-20 percent on what the figure would be today. Also It’s not that the developer is saying well I have a demand for these property last time but their is a thing call inflation.

    Jamaica would be ideal to live if you have a business or you have some kind of residual income coming from foreign . But to live there and get a job … the salary in Jamaica and the cost of living doesn’t add up and doesn’t make sense . In my opinion.
    My cousin makes $8000 every fourth night . That’s less than $100 CAD every two weeks . Who can live with that income ? After you take out taxi fare (which went up so high ), food cost (which is wild ) and rent … you are actually in the minus . Also I should say that my cousin works 6 days a week at a call centre -which is a decent job. I know others who work at wholesale and work $6000 a fourth night . I want to be clear I am not bashing Jamaica , Canada is no better . Rent is $3000 and the salary here unless you have a big big job (hard to get and also hard to find ) doesn’t make that . Not even close
    Sorry for the rant .

    Jamaica is actually one of the cheaper islands in the caribbean… considering that on a island land space is limited and everything has to be imported… we dont have much natural resources even the energy we are using is mostly from diesel while others can use hydro or natural occurring coal or geothermal etc so there is a premium… the average Jamaican today is living much better than 20 or 30 years ago… economy has not done too bad and covid didnt lick wi like it did other islands… if we could deal with crime i am certain we would see double the economic growth we are seeing… the diaspora has found new enthusiasm for JA and I am delighted to see money pouring in i just wish we see more money going into other parish outside KGN. Each parish capital needs a planning and development masterplan to beautiful and transform into modern cities not the ugly dirty unkempt cities and towns thar we have narrow streets poor drainage etc… we need serious gentrification of ghetto and inner city to unlock value all those areas around down town KGN fletchers land etc is serious value locked up when those should be apartments parks office blocks etc

    Sir, I live in North America and live a very frugal life. I do not have cable, I do not change cars every two years, I do not purchase name brand clothes or hand bags, for the most part. I do not switch phones all the time. If you do that, you are a foolish person. Because most times those people do not own their own homes and are in debt. I cannot tell you how many married people have come to me to do things for them as like cosign for a condo, borrow money and I will not do it because they will down me in debt and ruin my credit.

    Let me help you out with some of those figures that are not adding up. You are encouraging people to move to Kingston because of the conveniences, yet at the same time admitting that it has some of the lowest salaries on the island. I live in Trelawny, there is no way I can find a person to do any work for me at minimum wage. It takes a minimum of $6,000 to get someone to clean my house or do very light gardening work. MINIMUM. that is basically $40 USD for the day or $800 USD for the month. It may sound low to an American, but someone living in the countryside with minimal expenses (many don't pay rent), can make it work. Nobody would move to Jamaica to do menial work, so they wouldn't be getting this salary. The data I see on the internet about Jamaica is out of date, or just false. There is a labor shortage on the north coast, I'm seeing help wanted signs all over the place. Kingstonians need to stop speaking for the entire island when they don't know what' going on. Also 1/3 of the island lives in Kingston? Maybe that includes St. Catherine. Which neighborhoods do you know that can house nearly 1 million people? I don't know here these stats are coming from.

    • @SOAIVLOGS
      @SOAIVLOGS  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Before we have this rift between what Kingstonians think vs other parishes. I’ll mention again, I moved to Kingston, I am not a Kingstonian, I was born in Falmouth Trelawny and lived there for 21 years. I also lived in St. Elizabeth for about 5 of those years for school. Portland is actually my favorite parish out of all so I’m there a lot, I’m a countryman. I clearly said if you work remotely and can maintain your job and salary. I never said people should come here to do menial work. Jamaica has a low attrition rate for high paying jobs, that’s why many qualified students end up working in call centers for years. You mention a labour shortage in the north coast, if the pay is great as you are leaning towards and people can make it work, why are these jobs not being filled? You will never find statistics especially on Jamaica that is up to date but it’s a reference point. You know how we are as Jamaicans especially when things like census come about to even let them know how many people live in the house, we either not there to take census or some feel them too fass 🤣. But we say it’s about 3mil+ people that live here, is it factual, no, but it’s a close enough representation. Might be 4mil by now 🤣. Thanks for your comment and input Feona

There are more than 3% whites, 3% East Indian, 2.7%, and 0.8 others(Jews, Syrians, chinie black mix, Indian black mix, Portuguese, etc)....Too often Jamaicans just label themselves black even though they are of mixed heritage. I did mention it’s for people looking to return to Ja or invest in it and that it’s best to ‘OVER budget’ and save yourself room. You can never really set a guide that fits all as all our situations are different. I just read where someone is spending over $900k per month in the comments, this is definitely not true for myself but I know people who spend close to it but they are in good jobs and work hard, I can’t discredit them because it’s not MY truth. I’ve also met people who live waaaaaaayy less than that. I had a co worker years ago making $4500 per week and he had a kid, I asked him how he fed the baby…lasco. People make it work. • @richesmethod
      @richesmethod 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Ok so... Kenya is s country, Jamaica is a island, Kenya has large land mass and give or take 50 million people.. i remember taking a few micro and macro economic courses in college and there are several things I can quickly think of that explains your issue and none of it has to do with the government directly.. First is that Kenya is now industrializing and it's still a agricultural producer, Jamaica is smaller in size as well as population and imports may food and other products that they do not produce, also competition.. Drivers down prices, islands have less people therefore prices can be higher for products they don't it can't produce plus with less people to produce and or buy products..if not subsidized by the government. I can go on and on but the bottom line is I see people not learn how currency works and how economics work.. Schools don't tech the majority of people about money just how to get a job and as I travel the world I hear every countrys people complain about the same things because they don't realize that the cost of living adjusts by the median income of the people of the country... Supply and demand causes this adjustment.. So.. You will see that some things are more and some things are less. The government's job is to help set policy.. For example.. If possible if housing prices are too high government can pass tax laws that help developers get a incentive for building more homes.. Of course the developers will only build it if they can benefit economically..a island has less people to live in those apartment complexes and how much the developer can and cannot make, government can supsadise those houses but that in itself created other problems..ghettos....etc and I can go around and around. My bottom line is economics has many moving parts and people don't ask themselves why everywhere they go there is differing amounts of people who are rich, poor and middle class, but in EVERY COUNTRY this same dynamic exists. A big factor people also don't understand is how the RESERVE CURRENCY of a world works and how that affects imports and exports for products and taxes, tariffs etc can impact costs of products a country DOES NOT produce. I can go on and on but this macro and micro economic causes of prices, income, expenses would be impossible to break down in a comment given that there is literally a DEGREE CALLED ECONOMICS that desks with money and economic processes and federal reserve, central banks and other things like interest rates that help control these things we all complain about 😅

      I think it’s because we are not producing enough for our own and when you do we tend to want to export it where it will fetch higher prices. I was also taught that the government should be facilitators to production with countries, so if let say we need more onions, they should allow the importation of onion seeds into the country with little or no cost to drive production or lease lands to small farmers with the intent of planting more onions etc. If they do this, idk.
