During the late 60s the 5TH Field Battery used to live fire into the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Albert Head near Victoria. Due to a mixup of casings a round was fired charge 7 by accident. It was supposed to be charge 4. Consequently the round landed a lot further out into the strait than it was supposed to. No damage was done but there certainly could have been. That was the last time we live fired there. After that it was Wainwright, Shiloh and Ft. Lewis Washington.
Both my maternal grandfather and great uncle (my grandfather's brother) were gunners during the Second World War. Great uncle was there on D-Day and throughout the battle for northwestern Europe. Ubique!
I think we should still have self propelled artillery and some type of air defence system. Towed artillery is fine at a fire base but in the field counter battery fire would finish you.

This happened at fort sill in Lawton Oklahoma. 30 years ago or so. It hit in the middle of wal mart parking lot, no one hit tho

If we just trippled our military buget and did some reforms, we could be easily 5 to 8 times more combat effetive.

I'm actually a 4th artillery general support gunner now, yes we do have air defence vehicles however, they are not utilized whatsoever.
