      Fall Guy CVT and eCVT are completely different things.
      Toyota’s in-house CVT has a real 1st gear and then a light cone/belt CVT. Unfortunately , it’s not very reliable and a subject of major recalls.
      Toyota’s eCVT is a planetary gear setup that has no traditional gears to switch, but has no cones, belts or chains either, and it’s incredibly reliable.

    I think they should have introduced the AWD Camry as a hybrid. Use the same setup in the Prius/Rav4 for an electric rear end and now it's the new Camry AWD that just so happens to also be a hybrid and get 43MPG all day long.

    I get why everyone is begging for awd on the V6. You’d get a relatively powerful, indestructible, winter prepped vehicle. New ones seem to go for 32-35K and with the 1500 up charge for awd, you may be able to get one for under 35K. I think that a decent amount of people in my area would make that purchase, but not sure about nationally. So I have to assume Toyota wants to protect Lexus ES sales. Why get a ES when you could get a V6 Camry that’s not too far down the ladder

    I dont quite understand the big advantage of mechanical awd vs e-awd. Surely the biggest advantage of awd (in a sedan type application) is at slow speeds in slippery conditions. The torque of the electric motors would in most cases out muscle the ICE. So I think issue wouldn't be lack of power, but imbalance?

    I can't believe there is no real discussion, except for a few comments in this section, on why in the world would Toyota put AWD option ONLY on their 4cyl models instead of the really powerful V6 models (301 HP). If AWD adds weight and better control (which those V6 models heavily need); costs more, and reduces fuel efficiencies, then why would they think folks who are buying the Toyota 4 cyl sedans want that in their vehicle? It defeats the purpose of buying a 4cyl - lower costs and higher fuel efficiency!

    It offers worse MPG than the RAV-4? Then why buy this over a RAV-4? Unless you REALLY want a sedan... which is, of course, a legitimate reason but looking at the SUV craze, I'm not sure many people think that way... The RAV-4 is more practical (more cargo room), offers slightly better offroad performance with higher ground clearance and is easier to park (higher seating position and more compact except height). The Camry may have slightly better driving dynamics but it's by no means a sports sedan...

    I live in a hilly area and see plenty of stuck and abandoned AWD vehicles when we get a rush hour snow storm. Most AWD systems actually do not have the ability to put enough torque to the rear wheels to push the vehicle up hill if the front wheels are slipping. A Subaru with a manual transmission is the exception. It has a true 50/50 power split all the time.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      G Newman Boy... are you wrong on all accounts!
      First off, you don’t need much torque to go up a hill. Front, rear or otherwise. You especially don’t need it on slippery surfaces. All that will do is make your wheels spin out. It’s why with a manual, you should start on 2nd gear in ice/snow, instead of 1st.
      2. The manual Subaru is a default 50/50 split, but can go up to about 96% to either end, depending on slippage. So no, not “all the time”.
      3. Almost every AWD vehicle can change into 50/50 torque distribution.
      4. The reasons why you might see vehicles stuck in snow are primarily lack of traction (wrong tires for the condition), extreme conditions where no vehicle is safe, lack of ground clearance with snow drifts or a driver who simply didn’t feel it was safe enough to continue. It has nothing to do with any Subaru or other brand. Subarus aren’t magical. I’ve pulled many out of snow drifts and ditches.

      And yes you need torque to push or pull. The reason tractor trailers have diesel engines for the torque to get there wheels rolling. And as you can see from the video not all AWD systems can split power 50/50 or produce enough torque to the rear wheels to push a vehicle up an incline.
