This is one of those movies that ended up being much better than I thought it was going to be, and one of those movies that I forget about until I see it pop up somewhere, get sucked in, and remember how much I like it.
One of my all time favourite films. Love this film to death, feels like it was tailor made for since I'm a fan of Sandler and a huge PTA fan. I also love the fact that during the making of it they both became good friends. I hope they make another movie together some day (not counting that upcoming Sandler Netflix special).
Good review, Matt. This happens to be in my top 5 favorite films of all time. The movie just connected with me when I saw it in the theatre back in 2002. Absolutely love the unique percussive (and at times lush/beautiful) score by Jon Brion. It DID get a Criterion Blu-ray release and its great (has some terrific extras as well).
I honestly think this is one of Adam Sandler's better movies. I've mentioned before, that I'm not a big Adam Sandler guy. Largely because he's always playing characters whose quirks you're suppose to be charmed by, but the way the characters are written, they just come off as irresponsible, and obnoxious. But that's partly why I like this movie, because it has a self awareness about his character's flaws, and shows how self-destructive he is. Unlike something like Happy Gilmore where you're suppose to think: "Oh that rap scallion and his wacky shenanigans. What a goofball."
I don’t think I personally understood Punch-Drunk Love or Uncut Gems. Don’t get me wrong Sandler was excellent in both I just thought both were a little too slow paced. I personally think Sandler showed better dramatic range in the Netflix movies The Meyrowitz Stories and Hustle. But I feel I misunderstood the other movies and need to rewatch. Still he performed very well in all aforementioned movies.
16:06 After seeing those scenes you pointed out bro I really want to see this film now I would say since nowadays people are hating his recent comedies he should do at least one or 2 films like this film or ''Reign Over Me'' for Netflix instead of those bullshit comedies maybe on there they have a better chance then on the big screen? IMHO Solid job on the review bro I do want to see this film someday?
I'm pretty sure this does have a special edition elsewhere, because I know it has that infamous Philip Seymour Hoffman recreation of "The Mattress Man" commercial.
I can never get into this film. Maybe I should watch it again. But Adam does give a good performance and he deserves praise for this from his detractors.
I thought the bits of anger and rage were over the top and didnt fit with the overall tone of the movie. The rest of the movie was ok tho. Also, speaking of Popeye, I think Adam Sandler's best dramatic work cant even come close to touching Robin William's best dramatic work.
Robin Williams had the luxury of being able to perform in more dramatic roles than Adam has. I also think Robin's overall disposition enabled him to straddle the line of comedic and dramatic roles more effectively.
Adam Sandler and Robin Williams are just good comic and dramatic actors in their own right. There really is no comparison over whose work is better. They are different guys who are both very good at making the right movies.
@@ramboraph4life I like this movie a lot. It's one of my favorite movies with Adam Sandler. The main reason this movie didn't do well in the box office is because it wasn't released in a lot of theaters. It was released in very few select theaters. I remember because this was released in the year 2002. Also they didn't advertise this movie a lot. "Mr. Deeds" was released the same year and that got a lot of advertisement. I guess some people consider "Punch Drunk Love" an artsy film and usually those films don't make a lot of money. It's probably why they didn't release it in a lot of theaters.
@@ramboraph4life The Criterion Collection blu ray for "Punch Drunk Love" does have extras. One of the extras is an interview with the real guy that bought the frequent flyer miles coupons from Healthy Choice. It's interesting. You should get the blu ray. Just to let you know.
Great performance from Adam, shows he can stretch out his acting outside of doing straight-up comedies.
@Captain Brandon Horror Lover I prefer his newer stuff, personally. The Master especially which I think is his best, by far.

This film sounds very good

The Criterion release has all the features.
I haven't seen a film with Adam Sandler, which film I start with?
Great review Matt!
I don't remember that case. I remember the case showing Adam Sandler side view.
Dude! After the Sandler reviews, you should review Strange Days!!!
Strange Days is a Great film in my opinion. Funny enough that I saw Strange Days two days ago for the first time.
Strange Days is a very underrated film if you ask me. Please review.
I'm not much a fan of Strange Days. Sorry about that.
Good review Matt, I've never seen this one.
Ironic that Marky Mark went on to do the last two Transformers movies. Also unfortunately him sharing the same first name as I do.
I can never get into this film. Maybe I should watch it again. But Adam does give a good performance and he deserves praise for this from his detractors.
I agree my problem with it was the pacing but certainly not Sandler’s performance. He was very good. I just thought it lagged a bit.

It worked fine for me. A quiet guy would unleash that kind of anger & rage to lash out after building up for so long.
Robin Williams had the luxury of being able to perform in more dramatic roles than Adam has. I also think Robin's overall disposition enabled him to straddle the line of comedic and dramatic roles more effectively.

My Favorite Movie :)
Saw the new predator. Terrible Movie. I Hope you do an epic rant one day. And predator 2 beats the fuck out of this Movie.
Are you gonna review The Waterboy?
No. I said at the beginning of the marathon that I wasn't going to do all of his movies.
That's cool, no problem
