Hey everyone. Because I am being asked the same question, I have decided to put this here and pin it. There are some of you who have asked why I said that the way Mo'Nique went about expressing her frustration was wrong and you don't seem to understand why I said that. I am not referring to Mo'Nique speaking out about the issue of pay gaps in Hollywood. I supported her doing that. She was well within her right to do so and I supported most things she was saying about the situation. The PROBLEM I had was when she went on stage during her stand-up routine (and this was also mentioned on the Steve Harvey daytime show when she appeared as a guest) and told Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry and Lee Daniels to suck her d*ck. She said a lot of really lewd and unprofessional things because she was frustrated. Please watch those videos for yourselves. Now, some of you have no issue with what she said and you support her lashing out. I happen to disagree. I did NOT like when Mo did that and I think she did herself a huge disservice when she did. So, there you have it. That is why I said I didn't like the way she went about it.

I agree. There are more dignified ways to do it. We as black people tend to be aggressive when we're wronged, rather than follow our forebears example of being dignified when it comes to challenging the system. Think #CycelyTyson #SidneyPoitier #DiahannCarroll #HarryBelafonte. Monique could have handled it off stage. I agree with Monique concerning how Netflix treated her, but not about promoting #Precious. So what Tyler didn't want to pay her to promote the movie; it's your project; promote it. It only can add more money to the coffers and you'd have a better platform to justify what you're fighting against. My other point is, Monique DID make us aware of pay differences for Black actors as well as women, but so did #ViolaDavis, and no-one talks about that. Why?

@@charlesdavis545 No, it wasn't Monique's 'project'. It was Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey and Lee Daniel's project.
Monique was hired and paid to do a job as an actor and she fulfilled the contract and moved on. If they wanted her to do more ie promotion, they needed to PAY renumeration for that work, her time and inconvenience (time away from her family, mental wellbeing, chill & relaxation she would forgo, etc.).
You represent everything that is toxic in mentality about a certain section of the Black community that has a mindset based in low self-esteem and that Black people have no 'value' and because of that should accept working for nothing ('How dare you actually want to get paid for work as a well known, experienced and award winning entertainer and actor?!').
Yet you & Tyler Perry & Co. wouldn't dare to even suggest to a white woman of a much lesser calibre and status to Monique, to leave her home and come and work for NOTHING. But yet you expect a Black woman to do that and even berate her for wanting to be paid?! That is the epitome of a toxic mindset.

Very sweet, ur insight is true. I won't take too long with this address but may I point something out that I have noticed among us and we can apply this to Monique's not-so-subtle Rebuttals to Tyler and opera . An others, Tell me if you heard this before truth and lie went swimming 1 day as they got out in the middle of the water in splashing around all of a sudden truth was looking out for lie ind discover that lie jumped out of the water got dressed up in truths Clothes and took off running. So out of the water comes Naked truth chasing chasing the well-dressed lie. Think for a moment what are the lies that we as black people know about Hollywood You and I both know the answer so we don't even have to think about it. I know that when you live in a glass house you shouldn't throw stones well Monique didn't throw the Stone she shattered the foundation that has been built on a lie, Nothing is beautiful or pretty when it shattered. How many black men and women worked in Hollywood and went to their graves knowing the truth but couldn't speak it. She spoke it raw she spoke it truthfully and she spoke it without fear even though there was going to be a backlash even though there were clowns and ccoon a nd other people who weren't going to agree or support Monique. Steve Harvey and so many others But the truth is the truth. Hollywood is not going to change and we are not going to change it. Elijah Muhammad said back in the 30s all the way into the 70s. And minister farrakhan echoes it today we must do for self or suffer the consequences. Some of us still rebel against that Today these people are not our friends they never were our friends we don't have friends. We must look into ourselves and Settle our petty Differences because we are Hollywood every Black man and Woman that would Walk away from Hollywood that industry would sink in less than 24hrs I Don't think any of us would deny that .. Are they powerful yes do they have resources yes do they have government influence in federal support and everything yes are they wicked yes are they deceitful yes are they the Demonic yes are they sadistic yes but that's not who we are and that's not what we should represent a black devil is no worse than a white devil Because a devil is a devil.

Examples include hiring a black actress to play Cleopatra, who was not black, the remake of the Little mermaid, and taking a classic character and race, swapping her. the elephant in the room is that they are looking at how large of an audience u attract,,thats what is affecting the pay of black actors. Denzel and Will SMith , Eddie Murphy are the black actors that can consistently draw a huge crowd worldwide. Chadwick just before he passed managed to do the same. how many people are watching Jennifer Aniston's show versus Angela's show, thats what they will use as the excuse, so people need to keep that in mind. For black female actors, the writing of their parts needs to get better . there is a science to this and people arent looking at that, they just having expectations that never get realized. Will Smith famously explained how he became a box office champ, its because he studied the movies that made the most money and he tailored his entire career to that and put in the work and audience bought it. they dont care about your resume, thats not what its about,. Are people going to come see u when u put a project out is the question

I'm not sure we've ever seen that type of pay on a TV show since (maybe Big Bang?). Plus, this was long before the competition from streaming channels. This will be an unpopular opinion. Mass audience appeal gets the big salaries. It gives those actors & actresses bargaining power at the negotiating table.
One of the things that will hurt your mass audience appeal is forgetting you’re an entertainer & becoming an activist. Entertainment is for escapism.
Hollywood went so political since 2015, they’ve decimated the one thing their careers depend on: good will from the audiences. The bigger the audiences the bigger the paycheck & Hollywood stopped trying to entertain and they just made audiences feel like the “unwashed masses” & the undesirables.
    So the audiences moved on.
God bless her but she’s so focused on what someone else got she’s completely blind to the entirety of Hollywood’s problems which have just started.
She’s crying now? They went on strike [and very few cared!] for a greater share from a well they let run dry. 2024 will be far worse.
    TV ratings are down.
Movie box offices are down. There were more blockbusters flops than hits so we’ll see less blockbusters as well as less scripted tv shows.
The streaming bubble is collapsing, you will have more actors & actresses competing for less roles because roles are going to begin drying up, more having to do commercials and only those actors & actresses that kept their mouths shut the last several years will weather the storm Hollywood created for itself.

Sadly, that is so true. I am an older, white-as-table-salt woman, so I can't exactly weigh in on the issues black actresses have, but I can say if I have to watch another unrealistic car chase or superhero movie, I'm going to scream. Or cry. One or the other! Hollywood is and always has been about the money, not necessarily quality, but modern Hollywood is a whole other level of greedy and lazy. I do not care what the color of the actors are, but I do want depth and quality from the actors and the writing and right now, we got nothin'. Hollywood is churning out nothing but sequels and prequels and do-overs. They have absolutely no original ideas anymore, either on TV or in films. These days, I typically watch reruns or old sitcoms on television, or foreign movies. And it makes me sad because I've always been an avid moviegoer. Nowadays, I go more for a popcorn fix than to see a movie I'm excited about.

I mean, the Oscars rarely get it right, so, whatever--but this actress deserves more recognition and opportunity.

@beamanact 💯 agree! And not that this really matters, but I'm an actual trained actor that won numerous national awards during college and have been a director and acting coach for 17 years, so I've got a pretty good eye for this stuff. And her performance was a masterclass really. She made so many unique and yet profound choices in that performance. I remember just constantly being surprised, in the best way, with every scene that passed. She was meticulously AND YET organically constructing the character as a living ,breathing, fully 3 dimensional person. It is one of those performances where I don't even need to know the back story of the character-- because everything was told to me through her performance. Watching the film, you feel as though you DO know her story and who she is just from the way she delivered her lines. There is so much rich detail that informs you about the character without having to explicitly give a monologs about her past, her family life, her relationships, her interests, etc.-- like all of that is communicated through her performance of the available lines. It's brilliant. And it is something that very few actors have the ability to do. I would argue Cate Blanchett is the BEST at this, even more than Meryl or Viola. But all of them have that same ability. And I agree Octavia is great, but she was nowhere near Taraji in this particular movie. I think it was a timing thing as Octavia was still riding the incredible success of recent performances around those years. And you are right the Academy isn't great with their choices. Better than the Grammy awards imo lol! But still not fantastic. Curious, what did you think about last year's winners? Any that you strongly disagreed with? I will say that best supporting actress was wrong. Jamie did a great job, but it wasn't Academy award level to me. And best actress I still struggle with. I don't mind that it went to Michelle Yeoh, but Cate Blanchett pulled off a MONSTER of a role in Tar. I mean, that was a hurricane of acting lol. Best director I totally agreed with, BUT best film...hrmmm I thought The Fabelmans should've won. And I know it's taboo to break up best film and best director (though I'm not sure why). Best actor, I'm ok with Brendan taking it, though I probably would've gone with Butler in "Elvis". Overall it wasn't a shocking year to me. I have a feeling this year is going to be a mess lol

@@SquirtlePower809 I've been a professional actor for 33 years and a coach and theatre educator for two decades so yeah, i hear you! I don't have a whole lot to say about recent Academy Awards and going forward I will have even less interest and respect for the Oscars due to the imposition of diversity quotas in every area of filmmaking as a prerequisite for consideration for awards. Michelle Yeoh is a phenomenal actress and her performance was great--but also, I think, deservedly, she was being recognized for her body of work as well--this is often the case at Oscars...someone overdue for recognition... and her win last year represented an acknowledgement of that fact. I agree with you about The Fabelmans, but, again, Hollywood is "de-centering" such stories. The 2017 Oscars were a hot mess. I have very strong feelings about "La La Land" which I still feel was hugely overrated and Emma Stone's performance, while memorable, doesn't hold a candle to her work in "The Favourite" or even "Easy A" which I think is a masterful comic performance. Hollywood loves to celebrate itself and "La La Land" was a love letter to the industry. What was weirder--Viola Davis nominated for SUPPORTING actress for "Fences???" Um. What? She was the lead. It's interesting to think what Best Actress category would have been like...I love Meryl but "Florence Foster Jenkins" is not in the same league with even her own best work. Ruth Negga was wonderful in "Loving" which was a very important film that went otherwise unnoticed. Had there been any justice (and let's face it elite awards aren't about fairness) the Best Actress category would have been: Viola, Taraji, Ruth--see where I'm going? In 2017 three actresses of color in one category--no. Now? Absolutely. Oops. That was a long comment. LOL

That's what a lot people don't get about these pay gap discussions, there's literally a million things that go into why someone is is getting paid vs what someone else is getting paid. If this was 50 years ago, I could definitely understand where Henson and Monique were coming from, but in this day in age where diversity quotas matter more than anything, even more than merit in some circumstances, those arguments seem weaker today than in the past and that's only one aspect of this situation. We haven't even started into the rise of streaming services vs cable over the past two decade or drawing power for the box office just to name a few more factors. There might be some racial issues that come into why black actors don't do well but that has more to do with overseas markets like China not being very fond of black people than it does with the US, Canada and the UK.

I’m sorry but complaining about pay inequality in Hollywood is pointless. The entire entertainment industry has always been full of inequality and it always will be as long as we live in a free-market, capitalist society. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about TV, movies, or the music industry. For the most part entertainers who work in these fields will get paid up front based on their earning potential which can vary greatly.
Rihanna has gotten paid a whole lot more in her career than India Arie mainly because she’s way more popular and has generated way more revenue. Denzel Washington has made significantly more money than Woody Harelson because he has had more box office success than Woody. It doesn’t necessarily matter which entertainer is more talented or how many industry awards they've won. It’s all subjective to the public anyway and there are a multitude of reasons why they will spend their money on certain entertainers over others.
Indeed, race (and gender) can be a factor in many consumers’ decisions when it comes to film and television because people will often support actors who look like themselves. But this is an issue that Black American actors should be aware of from the jump because we’re a minority living in predominately white country. So if they can’t deal with this reality, then they should consider choosing a regular job where they can earn an annual salary.

      Truth.
If you’re consistently working on low budget productions with the smaller studios, you can’t expect some huge check. You WOULD have to repeatedly negotiate.
When someone wants Denzel on screen, they factor his proposed salary into the money they request for a budget. They APPROACH him!
So many Black actresses are one dimensional character types and they’re all the same characters. They’re easily interchangeable and that’s why so many of us-even as other Black women-get confused about who was who in what. It’s why production companies don’t necessarily care about who they’re getting, so they don’t plan for it.
It is no longer how it was when we know good and daggon well that Vanessa was Teri and Vivica was Maxine in Soul Food.

I hate to say talking about not making enough right now is just not great today. So many people are struggling to pay their bills so when they see an actress, no matter her race complain about how much she makes, it’s frustrating. Black male actors make around the same amount as their white counterparts depending on how popular they are. I think unfortunately there’s a stigmatism around black females in general that may be the popularity of a black female actress is not as high regarded as a white female actress. Black men don’t seem to have that problem. I think unfortunately the stereotype of a black woman is very negative a lot of times, so when that stereotype is put into a show I think it can turn viewers away. When only 7% of your viewers are black women (if all watch) it can make it difficult. Lastly Comparing what someone made on friends versus what anyone makes on any show today is it unreasonable. That show made way more money than any show today because viewership has decreased so much. You also when comparing a TV show and the amount the actresses make you need to look at how much the show is making. I don’t think the show the Angela is on makes nearly as much money as the one Jennifer and Reece are on. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. I believe everyone should be paid what they should be paid the matter their race but I think there’s so much more that goes into it. I think the biggest thing is that black actresses need better characters that are not so much what many see as a negative stereotype. And I sincerely hope that happen.

If it’s a good movie, sure I’d watch/support it. The thing is, we are being told we need to watch/support them bc the actors are of a certain race. Being black does not make a movie good. But there are plenty of good movies with black casts - one of my all time favorites is American gangster. If you’re asking specifically about women, I personally find that just like comedians, when it comes to acting men are much stronger. They leave much deeper impressions on me. I can’t remember a single hysterical joke I’ve ever heard from a woman nor can I name you a single movie I’ve truly enjoyed that had an all female lead, except maybe clueless but there were guys in it that helped make it what it was, it wouldn’t have been so great without the guys. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Hollywood needs to focus on original story telling, not rewriting history to make one race look more powerful than the other while misrepresenting who the real people were. Also, people need to stop going to social media to tell whytes we aren’t allowed in the theater on opening night bc that’s solely for them…but what we can do is go there TO PAY FOR THEIR TICKETS THEN MAN THE DOORS TO PREVENT OTHER WHYTES FROM ENTERING….who TF do they think they are & who TF do they think we are??? That completely turns me off from wanting to support *ANYTHING* from that community…..oh & it would help if they came up with their own characters instead of casting black actresses as already well known beloved characters on purpose & not bc they’re the best for the role then crying r-ism when we don’t want to watch it. That’s my honest opinion.

@@Naadeneo you’re absolutely right about it being done one purpose. What most people aren’t aware of (even though, those responsible actually admit it….but we aren’t “allowed” to talk about this particular group w/o either comments getting deleted or being attacked for being “anti-something or other”, so to tell you who I’m talking about, I have to speak cryptically so this doesn’t get deleted by bots that are programmed to delete any comments that don’t favor them bc this group also controls this very platform, let’s just say those I am referring to are who Kanye told us about) they are behind this race war they’re desperately trying to instigate - people believe whytes are responsible for lots of shit we actually didn’t do, “they” did it but they taught us whytes were responsible. (Do u know who owned the textbooks Americans learned from in the 80’s/90’s?? Ya know the girlfriend of that creep who had that island that lots of politicians & celebs visited where bad things were being done to young people?? Well, HER FATHER owned our textbooks- so we were lied to such extremes that you wouldn’t believe it - especially in our “his-story” books)
      I often make these 2 point to people bc getting people to believe me is the challenge but once they’re intrigued enough & they begin to look into this for themselves, they’ll find tons of info & even admissions to this being true;
      Point 1:
If whytes were the oppressors, do you think all other races would not only be allowed but be encouraged to trash us as often & loudly as they do? They’re encouraged to attack us by our country’s most powerful & influential institutions (government, media, Hollywood, corporations- all of which are dominated by Ye’s foes, mind you) if whytes were REALLY the oppressors & in control of everything, we would have come up with an accusatory word or phrase to call people to shut them up the way they have their “anti-something or other” word they accuse everyone of who so much as accidentally insults them. (Not only is Ye a perfect example but so is whoopi, Nick cannon, kyrie irving - all 3 unintentionally upset this group & were forced to publicly apologize to them - whytes never get any such treatment & thats bc *ITS NOT US WHO’S REALLY IN CHARGE & POWERFUL ENOUGH TO OPPRESS ANYONE!!!* In fact it’s our unwillingness to ruffle feathers that’s allowing the real oppressors to blame us!!)
2nd does it make any sense to you why our own govt would be destroying our country & weakening us to such an extent as to leave us completely vulnerable to an outside attack on our own soil?? Why on earth would the leader of the most powerful country on earth go out of their way to destroy their own power & prestige? Well, if I told you that *ALL OF THE TOP TEN POSITIONS WITHIN THE CURRENT PRESIDENTS CABINET WERE ALL FROM THIS ONE GROUP WHOM WE ARENT ALLOWED TO SPEAK OF* all 10 of his *TOP ADVISERS* not to mention top donors *TO BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES* are from this one group & how *THEY ALL HAVE CITIZENSHIP NOT ONLY IN AMERICA BUT ALSO IN ANOTHER COUNTRY IN THE M.E. THAT STARTS WITH AN I & ends in an L* then suddenly the fact that our govt is in fact being run by agents of a foreign nation starts to paint the pic of exactly what’s going on here.
They are intentionally weakening us from the inside between the open border, the alphabet mob that’s sterilizing CHILDREN via messing with puberty & surgeries, pushing victim narratives for certain groups & villain narratives for others & they use their ownership over our media to fan the flames that further divide us, hence why disney (currently owned by one of “them”) is doing what they’re doing. They’re not actually interested in telling amazing stories with black characters, their intention isn’t to entertain us, it’s to manipulate us, to mentally condition us, to piss us off & make us hate each other. Divide & conquer.
By placing black actors in white roles, they anger whytes while furthering the victim narrative of blacks…which in turn creates more animosity amongst blacks for whites.
It’s all very clear as day once this agenda is pointed out to us…like I said if u look into this for yourself you’ll find lots of evidence including many of them admitting that what I’m saying is true.
Look up “1500 rabbi’s sign petition” you’ll see one aspect as to what I’m talking about.. look at who’s at the top of every organization/corporation pushing these agendas. Or even every celebrity who denounced their “white privilege”, you’ll find people like chelsea handler, the Arquette sisters, David schwimmer, seth rogan, sarah silverman, Sasha baron cohen - it’s not a “COHEN-cidence” that these people *ONLY CLAIM TO BE WHYTE WHEN THEYRE CONDEMNING ‘WHYTENESS’* yet they claim they are NOT WHYTE but that they are jay ish whenever they aren’t trashing whytes.
So as unfortunate as it is, you’ll never see any great black stories be turned into movies, *ESPECIALLY NOT BY DISNEY!!* bc that’s not what it’s about….mark my words on that.
I’ll be stunned if this doesn’t get deleted lol

Now if as a whole average white people get paid more than average black people then thats a horse of a different color. Id be interested to know what these movies/shows gross. Could explain why youre not getting paid as much. Another thing to consider is most black women I run into are overbearing and entitled. That doesnt translate well overseas or anywhere else. Think about it. If white people have to defend themselves against accusations of being racist and are born inherently racist then why are we above defending ourselves against stereotypes about our community. Jennifer Aniston didn't get 1 million in the 90s because she was white or because she deserved it.
Friends was the top rated TV show at the time and was raking in millions globally.
Heck, the haircut Aniston got on the show even became popular across America, called The Rachel.
The pairing of Aniston and Schwimmer and their on/off relationship was water cooler talk for millions.
By the time their contract was up for negotiations, Schwimmer was going to be paid a million dollars.
The rest of the cast was going to be paid lower, with Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc being paid the least.
It was Schwimmer who fought for everyone in the main cast of Friends to get paid the same as him, which made Aniston, Cox and Kudrow the highest paid female TV stars at the time.
So unless Angela Bassett's on a TV show that is being aired globally, raking in millions, is well loved by the masses for her role on said show and is fighting for equal pay for all her cast members during contract negotiations, it's just wrong to be comparing her to Aniston.

Hi!!!!! I am planning to return to London next year, God-willing. I only passed through on my way to Dublin. LOL. Thanks so much for subscribing. Now, to your point....Here is why I think Taraji was silent. Taraji has an excellent working relationship with Tyler Perry. She has said numerous times that he was the first person in Hollywood to pay her, her worth...it was like $500k. That allowed her to negotiate bigger deals. Mo'Nique was telling Tyler to suck her d*ck and being very disrespectful. There is NO WAY Taraji is gonna support Mo'Nique in that moment.....even if she felt she had a point.
Take it away from Hollywood....let's say you were working in an industry earning £50,000 for years and someone (whom you consider family) came along and offered you £250,000 and that allowed you to negotiate a higher salary. Let's say your coworker had a financial issue with this person and told him to suck her d*ck on social media. Who you riding with? Even if you agreed with that person in principle....You are probably not gonna speak in their defence because of what they said to that person you consider family.

Rather than white actors get roles that translate across all demographics, Harry Potter is a great example. Why can’t a black movie just be a bunch of powerful wizards, why do they all have embody a single world view. Think about how many black fantasy or sci-fi movies exist, not many

One thing i need to say is-- in the entertainment industry your pay is commensurate with what YOU can bring in. And sadly, Taraji is not Tom Cruise. A lot of these amazing actresses are not blockbuster hits. Like you compared Jennifer Aniston, but she is a bigger name and Friends was a MASSIVE SHOW. So I'm honestly struggling with this topic, because i do WANT these women to get paid more and be supported, but i also realize that this is a business and they pay for what the client can produce. Am i out of line on this? If you can show me a bunch of white actresses getting paid more than black actresses and they are at an equal level of stardom, then i will absolutely stand with them. But I'm not sure that is the case right now tbh. You even mentioned Tracy Ellis and Gabrielle Union-- lets be real, outside of the black community, most people dont know who they are. They are still not the global superstar types.

24:50… That’s how so much of the Black audience gets lost. That’s how small the call is for Black actresses is-how SLIM the pickins.
Personally, I can name 30 or so Black actresses without pause. [I can also do that for maybe 5 or 6 other races, but that’s because I have ridiculously diverse viewing habits bordering on embarrassing.] Anyhoo… Many of us can only think of 3 or 4 when put on the spot. The reason for that is because they’re all cast for the same role, movie after movie and show after show. The roles are so stereotypical that the actresses are interchangeable, which makes them easily forgotten or confused with each other. Or sometimes they’re so many of US in a movie with such poor writing or character construction that someone gets left out in the recall.
For example: Soul Food was beautifully written. Everyone will remember Maxine and Teri, and what their beef was and who played them and everything else. If I ask about Girl Trip though… If someone only saw the movie once, they will either remember that Tiffany Hadish was crazy but can’t think of her character’s name, forget Jada was there, only remember Queen Latifah because she was still playing Khadijah 20 years later, OR, somehow, confuse Regina Hall with Tessa Thompson-but never actually know either of their names or who the character was or what they had going on. *ahem* The same could be said for Ocean’s 8 though. Sometimes, there are just TOO MANY PEOPLE in the movies. Most of Our movies are like that.
Hollywood, as a whole, needs to learn how to scale back and focus on individual characters again, and I wouldn’t be the least bit mad if they started with Black movies.

As far as promoting your film, the actors go to events like Cannes and do not get paid. Monique became defiant about not doing something that every other actor does willingly. she had the opportunity for international exposure had she attended the various global film festivals.

I grew up in the 70's so I watched many multiracial programs. I'm not saying it was perfect. I was a kid and didn't think twice about who was on tv or in a movie. Today, I understand black artists want their own programming and stations and are proud. If you create content that caters to a specific group, you know you don't make the money and that decreases income. Your example with Martin and Will appealed to a large audience. It's all marketing, investors and audience. If the actors want more money, you know the producers and investors want even more. I think another example is women vs male pro sports. The NBA will make more money than the WNBA for the same reasons.

You must admit there are no great roles made for blacks very often. Very few get get roles that call for a role model black person. They're given stereotypical roles or are given a role once played by a different race. The black directors can't think outside the box and create something that is not ghetto. There are some great black actresses. Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Angela Basset, Halle Berry, Octavia Spencer, Hattie McDaniel and so on. When there is a population of black at 13.6,you have to make the money by playing to the population. Hollywood needs to make black new roles that are appealing to all or most races before they will become as famous as the very few there are. Don't take stereotypical roles and only take roles that are going to make your skills better.

I may be wrong but I never heard Taraji P. Henson make this into a black-and-white issue. This is a black-on-black issue. Because in almost every industry white people are getting paid more than black people; it cuts deeper when someone who looks like you discriminates against you too. And Taraji used a lot of profanity, so what’s the difference between what Taraji and Mo'Nique said? Do actors and actresses have an ‘upwork?’ Taraji P. Henson, Mo'Nique, etc. should see what they’re getting paid for doing the project. I think it’s a sign of the times, Fiverr has dumbed down industries. I am a graphic designer too, I had this female Dominican who’s also a designer try to talk me into doing a project for seven hundred to a thousand less than my quote. I ended up walking away because it wasn’t worth my time. And they should have something similar to upwork so they can decide to walk. I think black people have created a monster by saying black people were kings and queens because everyone can’t be kings and queens, someone has to cook and bring the king and queen their meal. What I have learned from watching black women is there’s always a problem especially when dealing with other women. And Oprah Winfrey is the common denominator between Taraji and Mo'Nique. Currently, I no longer fight for equal pay because I’ve watched for almost a decade people doing the least amount of work and getting paid the same as I do. I’m now arguing for a pay system(s) that pays by the weight you carry, how many steps you take and how long it takes. We have smart people, smarter than I, who should be able to figure this out, and now we have AI.

When Monique and Taraji claim they don't earn as much as their "white female counterparts", I have to ask - Who exactly do they have in mind, when they say "white female counterpart"?
Because, as much as they'd like to assume, both actresses aren't the household names they think they are.
Both appeal to a very niche demographic within the US.
Beyond that African-American demographic, I would be hard pressed to find anyone who would even know either actress.
Mo'Nique, in particular, was fighting with Netflix, saying her comedy special deal should have been as much as Chapelle, Kevin Hart and Amy Schumer.
But those three have been regulars on TV and made a name for themselves for years and had a major following.
Even Schumer, the worst of those mentioned, had a much larger fan demographic than Mo'Nique.
And after that special aired, it was mostly panned by people who actually watched it.
So again, I ask - who exactly are these women talking about when they say "white female actor counterparts"?

Edit.: looking at it from outside the US, you might wanna say "Angela Bassett is making less than her white counterparts in a majority white country". We all agree that it shouldn't matter, but I think it still does. Also, she's never been the main character of a tv series, as far as I know. I love her! She's an amazing actress, but I think it does matter whether you're the star of a show or not. What about black actresses in black countries? We never talk about them.
Black doesn't translate overseas? I live overseas and we loved the Cosby show, the prince of Bel Air was a hughe hit, The colour purple 1985 was a smash hit and I love that movie. Why would people say such stuff? America is america - not the entire planet.

I can only speak for South Africa. In that country, the actors are sorely underpaid, a little more than $8 per hour on average. They can't even work as actors full time. Though the acting and production are excellent, the actors have very little to no control over the present or future profitability of their image, voice, or work. Most of the money goes to the producers.

It’s profitability. Jennifer star power compare to Angela basset is different. Friends was a blockbuster show so the stars get paid based on that and 911 the show, Angela get paid based on how the show is doing. I remember when the Big Bang was doing so well in the ratings and the whole team got a huge pay raise because of that. Denzel and Samuel Jackson would not be in the same pay grade though they have been in the industry around the same amount of years. There are so many variables in paying actors and some of these actors need to understand that. Get better agency to negotiate for you and don’t just let your team take care of everything for you 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don't watch movies or shows as much as I used to (mostly because I'm drawing or reading and won't pay attention) but back when I did a lot of films and shows portrayed lifestyles that I couldn't relate to or even begin to understand. I grew up on a farm on an island and to see a show/movie during my younger years meant having to watch things like Boys in the Hood, Baby Boy, and other shows like it. It didn't interest me, but to be fair most movies and shows don't interest me. My thought is that there should be more care in choosing roles and advocating for not being typecasted into particular roles. I know this is probably harder to do in Hollywood but many of the films with black female leads are not going to appeal to large parts of the population, especially if the watcher can't relate or understand specific lifestyle references. -An aside, of course I'm not speaking on fantastical story lines.

That being said, I still think they need to fight for higher wages because we aren't telling white actors and actresses to do that to get higher wages. And let's be honest, Viola Davis can out act and has more accolades than many of the highest paid white actress (including the highest paid).

In the entertainment industry, your talent doesn't matter, your skill doesn't matter, your resume doesn't matter. The *ONLY* thing that matters is how much money you can generate. Mo'Nique's audience is limited to a subset of black women, and so is Taraji P Henson. So they don't generate the revenue to ask for high payouts. They do not have mass appeal.
As far as the Angela Bassett and Jennifer Aniston comparison is concerned, Angela Bassett's television series 9-1-1, has an average of 9.62 million viewers per episode. The television series Frends, had an average of 20+ million.

If I was a black actress being unfairly paid, this is what I would do: if a producer offered me a job in their next project and they tried to low ball my salary, I would either humbly decline the offer or I would do the project but I would use the movie as free publicity and advertisement for my other endeavors. So I may not have gotten a huge salary for doing that particular project but in doing that project, it helped me obtain MORE REVENUE for my other streams of income. So if I only got $200,000 for a movie, that movie is going to be shown world wide. So that's the time to either put out an album. A clothing line. Start a makeup line. Perfume. Or reach out to companies that sell my favorite product and ask them, hey. I'm going to do a movie soon and I would like u to sponsor me and I'll endorse your product. Etc. So I would actually end up making way more money than what I got doing that project. 👍👏

Unfortunately, you won't be able to work on that because it's God-given. Wonder how the world's geniuses who are supposed to know how the world works are not presidents? It's because they don't have the mass appeal most presidents have. I think the earlier the black community accepts it, the better for them. Just like Asians. Just who among Asian actors can just dictate their price? I think only Jackie Chan and no one else because he's the only one with a global appeal and producers will surely make money from them.

While it's true, and sucks, that black actresses spend just as much as other actresses but get paid less per movie the fact is that their movies make less in profit. Why? She said it herself, "I'm tired of hearing that we don't translate overseas." I'd be tired of hearing that crap too, but it's true. My white husband and I buy, rent, (Amazon Prime and Vudo) and go see just as much "black" movies as "white" movies but we're American. We can relate to black actors. We understand where black directors and writers are coming from. Our hearts are rooting for the black heroes because we're American and practically the same. In other countries where they watch American movies, it's not the same. They're not interested in movies with mostly African American actors. They don't relate to the theme. So they don't PAY to watch them. Which translates to less profit. Black movie producers are doing great, they're coming up bigtime and we shouldn't be pushing them down because they're not paying their actors the same. They're working with what they've got AND they're innovating rapidly.

The reason why people had an issue with Monique is because she belongs to a marginalized group that animosity was fueled by fatphobia, stereotypes, respectability politics, and being the palatable 🥷🏾.
