An outstanding all-in-one video, PB....... a classic toy, disasters, disaster relief, sound effects, musical talent and a beautiful end result. What more could a bloke want? Top notch early morning entertainment.....👌🏻👏🏻👍🏻
This video had it all. Those famous sound effects AND singing AND on the fly problem solving! And who doesn't love this classic model!! Would love to see Uncle Phils collection, PB!
@PBsRetroRestorations totally agree, and yeah suxs big time, can you tell me where you get your matchbox deals? As there white toner decals, enjoy your weekend coming 🍻🇦🇺🤝🇦🇺🌨🏔🥶🌧🔥🔥
Another fine Matchbox reclamation, oh sorry restoration. Those first decal were spot on. Pity you lost them. Black square are good but not perfect as you said a little washed out and not always the right font. But unfortunately beggars cant be choosers. Was fun having you and Hayley over and hope we can do it again some time. Bl###y cold here 6 major frosts in a row frozen pipes and all -5C average top temp 6C. Gotts to love Tassie in winter. Cheers JV
Thanks JV. When I saw those new decals on the big telly, it made me cringe a bit at how awful they are, especially the 'P' in Pickfords. Stay warm lol.
Nice save, Pete. Even with the frustration of poor preproduction parts. By the looks of things, they used a hard resin like use to make parts.cheers Michael
Thanks Michael. Yep hard resin, nice looking part but next to completely inflexible and therefore next to useless. Could have designed / printed my own. Oh well.
That's very cool, Peter. Not like Captain Australia, cool. But cool, non the less. I have redone a number of cars because of clear coat. No shame there.
Listen Gerry, Captain Australia is not cool. He's the poster child for alcohol abuse and carry on. If he ever heard someone thought he was 'cool' I'd never hear the end of it. Whatever that decal was made of, it wasn't made for clear that's for sure, which is a shame because it was a more accurate on than the one I finished up with. Thank you!
Maybe Lesney thought they'd 'jazz it up' for the 'kids' 😆I think all their other Pickfords toys were blue, weren't they? Who knows, a mystery lost to time I guess.
Nice job Peter,I feel your pain mate,I think the decals were just too old, happened to me as well. The door should've been soft and flexible ,I was lucky with mine . Anyway it looks gorgeous, I like it.cheers Laz
I gotcha BK, I got them off fleabay: www.ebay.com.au/itm/392195353100?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-154756-20017-0&ssspo=cnhTUVSNTiO&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=Hso4VjAVSlq&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Problem is this has only happened a couple of times to me, and on the law of averages I'll just have to wear the occasional time it happens I guess, there's just no way of knowing what ones will react.
No, they were pretty cheap so I can just wear it, Alan is a good guy I'll mention it to him when I see him next. He's in his late eighties so I'm not gonna give him a hard time about it. The SFX have somehow made a comeback. No comment on the singing though?
Thank you. I know right? The other one that winds me up is the #42 Evening News Van, I've never seen ANY repro decals that match the originals. I'm working on my own for the next time I do one. Thanks for watching.
looks lovely. the lighter green is unusual, but suits well. too bad about the decals, and I actually facepalmed when I saw you fiddling with that inflexible rollo... made in rigid resine? what were they thinking? I got one of these Pickfords at the flea market a while ago, and luckily the rollo is still inside, pushed in and shoved down the hall into the drivers' fictional neck. but it's still there. :)
Thank you. I should have gone a bit further with matching the paint but I like it in the end. I incorrectly assumed the roller door was just a bit stiff and needed a bit of flexing to 'warm' it up. Completely rigid resin, so it would never have fit without cutting it down anyway. And the more I look at the second lot of decals, the worse they get. The 'P' is terrible.
@@PBsRetroRestorations aw. well, what can you do... browsing my pile I found the little Matchbox Daimler Double Decker Bus in ivory paint and livery, and the paint is chipped but the decals are still perfect. I might have to try and match the paint Marty style, and cover the decals for a refresh. :P there is also an old Dinky Commer wrecker with perfect decals while the rest is chipped dead. ...what if the go and try to keep the original livery wherever practical and feasible instead of erasing it all and repainting it with decals that won't fit?
I know every builder uses a wire brush or equivalent to buff the model before primer and paint. However i question how a shiny surface helps adhere the primer? Surely it is more important to colour match and to make sure it’s a grease and oil free surface. But I don’t see many degreasing before primer. Thoughts?
I think it has to do with the layer of zinc oxide on top, the layer that makes it dull grey. not many paints stick to that properly. there are also differences between cast zinc alloy, like what our fave toys are made of; galvanized zinc, and flame-splattered zinc. the latter actually repents normal paint, and you either need a special basecoat, or have to wait until the silvery surface is a dull dark grey... aside that, the buffing is to make sure no one misses big scracthes, gaps, or any other flaws you'd later see through the paint. and it has become a kind of ritual, too. :)
I would think the same about a shiny surface Bob. It's very tempting for some reason when it starts getting shiny to keep on with it. I know in this instance when I stripped it the second time, it was a complete mongrel to get the paint off again, but that might have been from the two lots of clear it had. I do try and degrease the castings, I don't always do it and I don't often film myself doing it. I didn't do it to this one. I used to get really stressed about getting a super close paint match, but sometimes I let close enough get through however in saying that I'm doing a K5 Racing Transporter at the moment and the green I used was way too dark and it's getting stripped again, so sometimes I try 😊 Thank you for your thoughtful feedback.

Thank you Thomas. I've been trying to come up with a format for showing his cars, maybe shorts.
Nice restoration, details and paint job 👌 👍
Thank you Joe.
Excellent restoration PB, love it!
Thank you very much Ron.
Decals gotta love them, but we all really need to know what they were sealed with, as Enamel will react with Arcylic over the top etc 👍
Yeah, it's impossible to know with decals and it sucks when you have to strip it and start again. And buy more decals.

Even with all the challenges, you got there in the end. Looks great PB!
Thank you Scott. I told Mrs. PB I was gonna be five minutes snapping it back together last night, oh well.
It's a great resto peter well done
Thank you Garry!
Another great video peter ,it was all going so well ,you dealt with the problems like the superhero you are , great work ,happy birthday dilon.
Superhero? Calm down Martin 🤣 You may not believe it, but I'm just a regular person 🤣🤣🤣

Not sure i recall Pickfords in green livery,BRS Parcels yes,but Pickfords,as far as I remember were always a shade of blue.

Where do you get those foam sanding pads from?
Sorry but I'm a few vids behind 😔

It’s a shame the vintage decals didn’t work out. The restoration sure looks a million bucks.
Thank You. Yes the vintage ones were miles more accurate, with hindsight I should have bought another set of them and not clear coated them.
Interesting, mayb U should a different clear coat the second time. Cheers Graham

Also (especially after caustic soda stripping) you really need to get that layer of residue off before anything else.
