Thank you for this walkthrough of a life as a paraprofessional! I start my job as a SPED Teacher Assistant on Monday, and I will be working with different children each hour K-6th grade. Do you have any tips for first meeting the children as well as the teachers, as well as how to be flexible between assisting children in a variety of ages all day? Thank you so much for your videos, it really helps me know a little on what to expect every day.
Congratulations! That’s so exciting. You’ll be working with a wide range. When meeting the kids, you want to introduce yourself and let them know that you’ll be there to help them with anything they’ll need help with so that you can start to build that trust with them. Maybe ask them a few questions to get to know them. Ask them if there’s anything they’d like to know about you. You want to build a relationship with them so they trust you to support them. With the teachers, I would do sort of the same thing as far introducing yourself. Definitely find out what they expect from you when it comes to working with the kids. Each teacher may want you to focus on something different depending on the student’s needs. Ask them questions about the student so you know what the goal is for each one. At my old school, they provided copies of the IEP. Ask if that’s something they do at your school. If not, just find out what info is available to you so you know how to best support the students.

What does the main duties of paraprofessional?
Hey! Just depends on what kind of paraprofessional you are. I’m a special education para, so I provide instructional support to students with special needs and assist the teachers with whatever they need help with. I help with collecting data on students and doing weekly interventions as well as small tasks such as, making copies, passing out papers, etc. Also at most schools in the district, paras have duties outside of the classroom. For example, I have a morning duty, lunch duty, and afternoon duty 😅

@@BlackZiTVMCMXC There are different para positions. Research and see which ones interest you and apply from there.
