That song, when I heard them at Red Rocks last summer peacefully echoing through the amphitheatre with 9,000 quiet fans and one man with a guitar, was simply amazing.
dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you're stoned like me atm you can watch pretty much all of the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my gf for the last few months :)
The subtle guitar differences throughout this song are the most simplistic yet perfect in every way. Try to play it, you'll be surprised to hear them after listening to it 1000 times. Seth, you knocked it out of the park. 105!
"I walked from the ashes with just a few scratches" kind of implies he miraculously made it thus feeling the presence of God with him. That's how I always saw it at least.
How I always took it is that when you're dead, you can't get hurt too much. The scratches were the only thing his spirit had, while his body was in the ashes.
my brother and i performed this song for my niece when she was barely 6 months old... singing and dancing around with her was so awesome and hearing this song always reminds me of that now that they are away in Germany
Beautifully played/sang and wonderful lyrics: "...metal surrenders when oak trees meet fenders and engines go through the front seats." Keep up the fantastic work!
Interesting that so many people think the narrator lived through the crash because of some divine intervention. I never thought he lived through the crash and that makes the story even better, more haunting. Consider: 'memory of me on your shelf' and the bit about 'talking' to God and 'hitch hiking, walkin' with 'God' certainly don't imply he's still alive. Either way, it's an amazing song that reminds me just what good songwriters these boys are.
Yeah...He is basically playing the major triads that are in each chord. He is doing this first on the D chord Then on the C? chord and then on the G chord. Hold each chord as if you are going to strum it. Then lift your pointer finger and hammer it down into the fret. Right after that play the open string that is underneath your pointer. Repeat this with the C? chord. When you reach the G chord you change it up by walking your fingers up the E string. 0,2,3. It's just a major scale.
@chainlinkdreams That is a koa/spruce McConnell Guitar. It was made by Jordan McConnell in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jordan is an outstanding guitar player himself and a founding member of The Duhks. They were nominated for a Grammy themselves a few years ago. Check out the McConnell Guitar page on fb
no no no no i mean i liked you comment at first but then i heard the lyrics. He says he walks from the ashes with jus a few scratches. and now were just talkin were hichhikin and walkin well see you in name of city tonight. wich makes me think he starts hitchhiking to his own show after the crash and thanking god while he walks and waits
does anyone know how to play that chord at 1:28? i can do harmonics on guitar but his sounds so much better than mine. Maybe because he is perfect but nevertheless. Thanks Avett Nation
63 ford galaxie you got to be kidding I I have had a few 63 galaxies they're one of my favorite cars the only thing better would be to be jamming this tune in my Galaxy going down the road talk about something cool that would be it for me anyway 🏁
+Phishy Eddie Man you read way too much into what the songs about.. to me.. it's exactly what I went through, though w/ no crucifix my neck snapped and I had no booze
in addition to that, it's pretty clear from the avetts music that they are interested in maintaining a healthy relationship with their god. with that knowledge, i think the line "my crucifix warm on my neck" only serves to deepen the meaning of the song, because it's apparent that god is meaningful to him in his life. it's not just another empty metaphor that the writer has no experience with.
@buzinessmann I thought i spotted some tears @vashda are you talking about the show that was live broadcast to Concord? That show messed up and the hometown got a little angry. It was funny. I'm not from here, so I just sorta watched as everyone kinda boiled. @shrxfn68 my friend, who's from Concord, loves to hear the original version but hates any others ha I'm a fan of the Avett's, but I'm just not from their hometown so I don't share that bond that people here have that make them so animated.
Can anyone explain how to play the guitar's chorus? I'm learning the song, and can play all of the chords that he plays while he's singing, but I just can't figure out the part where he's playing without singing.
Seth Avett. One of the best storytellers of his generation.
That song, when I heard them at Red Rocks last summer peacefully echoing through the amphitheatre with 9,000 quiet fans and one man with a guitar, was simply amazing.
"metal surrenders when oak trees meet fenders" love that line.
metal surrenders (my hard headed way of living) Oak trees meet fenders (steel is no match for God)
dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you're stoned like me atm you can watch pretty much all of the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my gf for the last few months :)
@Jase Harold definitely, I have been using InstaFlixxer for years myself =)

105!
I will forever love all the incarnations of Seth Avett.
"I walked from the ashes with just a few scratches" kind of implies he miraculously made it thus feeling the presence of God with him. That's how I always saw it at least.
his hair grows faster than mans alive, both facial and on his head... Rogain needs to talk to Seth
the avetts will never just be a memory on the shelf and even when their loose their music is always tight!
It’s remarkable how pretty he can make a song sound with such a simple chord progression.
Great song, this video never gets old
Never

@1987seminole it's a bonus track on Emotionalism. it's on itunes
yay for sure!
Great Story.
story of my life
The Avett Brothers complete me.
he's playing harmonics on the 16th fret of the D, G, and B strings. this is the equivalent of a twelfth fret harmonic, since there's a 4th fret capo.
I want some details on that set of stings he's makin love to!!
I like it!
Yeah...He is basically playing the major triads that are in each chord. He is doing this first on the D chord Then on the C? chord and then on the G chord.

I am just in love with that little chord at 1:28
no no no no i mean i liked you comment at first but then i heard the lyrics. Concord is the city. Their home town just outside of Charlotte
yay!!
He's just the best around no joke !! Killer stuff
crackerfarm...who are you?? and how do i get your job?? and thank you 1000x for posting such amazing, intimate videos :) keep them coming!
YEAH!!!!!!!
god without the beard you can really see how beautiful he is!
gooooooooooooood
Song reminds me of my dumbass cousin. I'm going to learn it and sing it for him.
song is about losing control of your life and finding god and accepting him
Duuuude. So fuckin good.
you notice in all of his videos, he doesn't look at the camera OR his guitar...tight
It isn't a chord, they're just harmonics. They are really sweet though. These guys are super talented. :)
Is there no place you can purchase a recording of this? Heard Seth play it in Baltimore this summer and loved it.
wow
it's actually about the car accident that seth was in for real...he's still alive as you can see/hear :)
It looks like a 7th fret harmonic (relative to capo) - just play around over the 11th fret when capo'd at 4, you'll find the sweet spot.
HO. LY. SHIT. This video is badass.
your awesome bros. I love you guys we should jam
@solitairemystery thanks man...and their FB page is nice!
does anyone know how to play that chord at 1:28?
i can do harmonics on guitar but his sounds so much better than mine. Maybe because he is perfect but nevertheless. Thanks Avett Nation
@chainlinkdreams - my guess is he plays Elixir strings
63 ford galaxie you got to be kidding I I have had a few 63 galaxies they're one of my favorite cars the only thing better would be to be jamming this tune in my Galaxy going down the road talk about something cool that would be it for me anyway 🏁
¡Viva la pasión!
Im loose but my steering wheel is tight.
Im loose (no control over his life) steering wheel is tight. (HE has control)
Im loose means he is slightly drunk and his steering wheel is tight means well his steering wheel is tight
+Phishy Eddie Man you read way too much into what the songs about.. to me.. it's exactly what I went through, though w/ no crucifix my neck snapped and I had no booze
The harmonic would have to be on fret 16, since capo is on 4. Natural harmonics should be 12 frets higher than the base fret.
in addition to that, it's pretty clear from the avetts music that they are interested in maintaining a healthy relationship with their god. with that knowledge, i think the line "my crucifix warm on my neck" only serves to deepen the meaning of the song, because it's apparent that god is meaningful to him in his life. it's not just another empty metaphor that the writer has no experience with.
ive noticed he uses a cappo on the 4th fret a lot and also uses a G chord all the time, must be his little thing
@brodank lol, I was actullay talking about the guitar as a whole but I agree with the elixers'!!
@buzinessmann I thought i spotted some tears
@vashda are you talking about the show that was live broadcast to Concord? That show messed up and the hometown got a little angry. It was funny. I'm not from here, so I just sorta watched as everyone kinda boiled.

I'm a fan of the Avett's, but I'm just not from their hometown so I don't share that bond that people here have that make them so animated.
wonder if it's possible to play this song with a pick
Beautiful guitar. what is that?
prob a custom home built (guess)
Anthony Viviano it's a custom Jordan McConnell
Can anyone explain how to play the guitar's chorus? I'm learning the song, and can play all of the chords that he plays while he's singing, but I just can't figure out the part where he's playing without singing.
@KatieIsntFamous That's called harmonics. Pretty difficult to do but it sounds sweeeeeet.
never lose control in the curve...the easiest!
Harmonics FTW
@haydenarias - McConnell Guitars. google: Jordan McConnell dream guitars, and there is a whole page about seth's guitar that jordan made
I like the sentiment, but it's a true story
