Most skillful game ever made due to the great physics engine and the coding. Only two types of players - experts and cannon fodder - very little in between. What a game!

I've played quite a few modern games. Cool graphics and all, but till this day none of them give me the thrill of a good old ctf game in tribes. Tribes gameplay was fantastic.
I agree, they got the whole game balance right. Choices were simple, straightforward, and effective. Heavy, medium or light armor with obvious tradeoffs. Handful of weapons from light-and-fast to devastating-but-slow (those green-smoked bomb things). Add great physics, great idea of the jetpacks to get 3D maneuvering, good framerates on slow computers, and lots of players allowed on servers when dialup was still typical. The best thing though was their voice system where everyone could "talk" to each other with the ctrl-V commands at a time when you couldn't actually talk to other players online. They chose good phrases and an easy way to "speak" them. I still remember ctrl-VAH to say "hi."
When i see all these youngsters writing how much better T:A is to this, i get all warm inside. I was there, I lives and experienced Starsiege: Tribes. (and other games) Thats an experience they will never know and feel, the industry has left some a lot of the heart and passion behind, the essence that WAS gaming back then. I dont miss the graphics, but i do miss the experience and sensation...
Nothing can explain how incredible playing this game was, particularly in 1999 to 2002 period. The community was awesome and nothing has ever come close to the feeling you get when you land a long range MA, complete a fast cap or wreck someones base as HO.

The game still lives people! It's run by a collective of community master servers but it still lives! Most play Annihilation, but base is still popular as well
Eye Candy and the quest for it can really throw people off. Despite the "old" graphics quality, the DNA of this game has not been duplicated nor surpassed.

Sadly, when I go online to play most games nowadays, the players seem to have forgotten that in a team game, you are supposed to work as a team to complete the objective. I've had plenty of teammates kill me so they could say, capture a building on their own, so they could have all the points. Tribes needs to make a comeback

I was just telling my friend that. He played some Ascension, ick lol. I was telling him the history of tribes and how 2, 3, and aerial assault(ps2) were all garbage, as well as Ascension, in my opinion. OG Tribes is most definitely where it's at!

There's a few that still play and make videos. I've watched a few and it's about 1/2 new people (or new names) and 1/2 people I recognize. It's mostly really good players right now, at least in the videos. I mean.. if you're playing a 24 year old game no one knows about anymore, you're probably an enthusiast and good at it. I miss the game.. I could beat anyone in a duel except one person... [5150] DaBomb. That name is imprinted in my brain. He's the only one I would barely beat ever. Anyone else I could beat pretty consistently. I loved the dueling servers. The one way to get better is to play against better players and I climbed to the.. 2nd highest rung. [THE]TrojanMan was my main tag way back then. If you're out there DaBomb.. I miss hating you.

Use to play Tribes 1 when I was a kid, moved onto Counter Strike Beta, then to a competitive Counter Strike 1.3-1.6 player. I've seen skill in FPS games... I always stood by that FPS gamers will never be as good as the old cs 1.3-1.6 players, but I was DEAD wrong.... Tribes 1 players were GODLIKE!... to do half of this shots, mostly the consecutive ones, requires much more then just twitch reflexes Absolutely amazing, 90's FPS games at its best
Im sure videos like these will start to see more views as Tribes:Ascend gets more popular (i only just encountered the teaser trailer). I'll echo others comments and add that there has been no other game that could keep my attention as long as this one did....almost 6 years of playing Tribes on various teams and I loved EVERY single minute. Wow, I remember starting play in 1998! Must have played this game and nothing else for 2 solid years. If you had the right biology, lots of time, a decent rig and DSL/cable you could really become a God in this game. Never since has there been a game that has surpassed what Tribes did to establish a gaming elite.
@AahPollard That's exactly how it happened for me, except I was 14 when I built my first PC, and 15 when I got a beta key for Tribes: Ascend. I loved it. And I also love how accepting the community is. None of them are elitist. They're just glad they have new players.
Tribes: Ascend is the only Tribes game I've played but still this looks more interesting than Tribes: Ascend. I hope some day Tribes Ascend gets better physics and weapon balance.
@RedGr3mlinz perhaps you missed it, but there is a good replacement title which is really good: legions overdrive. sure, i miss some old maps like snowblind, but give it a shoot. I was a capper for [Kon] and I loved every moment of this wonderful game, it for me was the ulitmate in multiplayer warfare and tactics. What a joy it was playn this game and kids of today will never play anything like this which is a shame. The community and everything about Tribes is something that I will never forget. I love you Tribes, just a shame T2 was total shit, but I do hope that with todays gfx engines surely someone can make another that would truely rock!!
i hear ya, im a huge fan of the quake and UT series, i miss games with that kind of learning curve and skill differential. there are a few gems here and there that are still released, but theyll never reach the same level of popularity as they once did. looking forward to hawken/fall of cybertron multiplayer.
