This one stuck with me when I first heard it. Could you imagine looking at what has your cats attention in your basement. Only to see someone standing there in a ski mask. That's straight out of a horror movie.

I live in the area this happened - the cat in the basement thing has stuck with me forever, it's absolutely terrifying. We used to visit the Trenton air base while I was an Air Cadet working on my pilot's license. The fact that I may have actually crossed paths with this man is the cherry on top. Most hated person EVER in our community.

I can only imagine. I live on the other side of Toronto and the news of the day was jaw-dropping. I can only think if it were my wife or one of my daughters. I am a peace-loving man but I would happily take him out and spend my retirement behind bars....

That interrogator is fucking smooth. Never refers to him by rank, leaves silences for him to fill, is calm and clear, slowly drip feeds him their evidence, absolute master of his craft.
Jim Smyth is the interrogator and if you look up his name on TH-cam he has other interesting methods used on criminals!

Thanks, Mike. I've seen several documentaries about this incredible creep and read a book or two about him as well. I'll never forget the account about his attempted suicide behind bars where he would eat his meals alone. RW saved up individual condiment packets of ketchup etc. until he had enough to stuff down his throat. However, the guards heard him choking and gurgling loudly and rushed to his aid. They referred to him afterward as Colonel Mustard.

This detective Jim Smythe is phenomenal. He’s cracked many high profile cases in Canada and I’m in awe of his interrogation techniques. He expertly tailors his approach to each suspect with incredibly accurate precision. Really really fascinating. There should definitely be a movie made about his career and life.
The Behaviour Panel made an episode of this interrogation, and was so impressed by Jim that they did an interview with him in a later episode 👍

He refused a promotion and offers for books and TV, said he was only doing his job . Total legend .
I agree. Det. Smyth was humble and acknowledged the whole team who helped convict Williams. I did read that there was one case prior to Williams', where the judge threw the case out because the suspect had not been properly informed of his rights. That could explain Smyth's thorough, comprehensive and patient explanation during questioning. The police did an impressive job once they had some key evidence.

Correct me if I am wrong. I remember watching an episode of Criminal Minds(or maybe another crime series). I didn't know this case at that time. The episode is exactly based on this story.
This was a particularly difficult one. Absolutely horrific. Especially seeing that he attended the funeral for the girl he killed, and presented the flag to her family. The only good thing was (catching him of course) when they had a ceremony to burn his uniforms, awards, etc!!
Him writing the letter of condolence to her father was some sick 💩

@@amyallds2176 I think that’s shows he liked to have power over people and he was also trying to “play” the part of the respected Col. that was in such a high authority in the military and such powerful position. He had that mask on in public so no one would suspect what a deviant he was in real life.
According to the program about him on the 5th Estate he did not attend the funeral but did write the family a letter of condolence.
"What would you be willing to give me today to help me move past you in this investigation?" THAT is a brilliant question. I've never heard it phrased quite that way. It makes it so easy to read the suspect and determine whether you think he is hiding something or being deceitful, and it works on people like Williams who are wanting to appear as cooperative as possible without giving too much away.
The phrase says 'You are a good Canadian boy who wouldn't do this' so who do you think did this

You're right, an absolutely brilliant question! I've watched extended footage of the interrogation and the detective does an amazing job breaking Williams down and getting him to confess.
Zach Davis I completely agree!!!!! The interrogator of Jodi Arias should’ve watched this Detective, Jodi even says during her interrogation what does she have to gain by confessing and the detective let a perfect opening to pass. This detective was able to get across why he should confess and capitalized on all the right questions plus made all the right moves. I remember being so upset when that detective missed a perfect opportunity to get Jodi Arias to open up and confess, sure enough after he missed that opening she completely closed down. Then it led to the ridiculous and very costly trial that just caused more pain and emotional distress to the family and friends of Travis Alexander. When you’re dealing with psychopaths (like Russell Williams) and especially a sociopath like Jodi Arias you have to always be on your best game because you only have a thin line to confession and once it’s gone you can’t get it back. This interrogation should be watched, studied and dissected for all students by their professors teaching criminal justice. I’m glad to hear that it is widely being studied and used as a training tool!!!!!
All things considered, he provided a good answer too. "what do you need?". I feel like most innocent people who just happened to have that same brand of tires on their SUV (which could happen if a local tire shop has a certain brand on sale, and Toyo are a pretty good/popular tire brand), they would also answer that too. Even though they have the right to leave and not provide anything as they're not being retained and have the right to speak with an attorney before speaking with the police. He didn't know they had footprint impressions and he had the nerve to wear the same type of boots. That's what's really impressive about this investigation. He cleaned up the crime scene, which was his own home, so he wasn't worried about DNA and fingerprints. He dumped the body somewhere remote. He's been breaking into houses undetected for years so he's not worried about being recognized. The matched footprint completely screwed him because since it was a perfect match just like the tires, it allowed them to apply for a search warrant of both his cottage (that was likely clean) and his Ottawa home where his wife lived, while he was still in the interview room. He knew they would find everything while tearing apart his wife's home and that's what prompted the confession. Had it snowed that night or the day after, he would have gotten away with it. Had he chosen to wear different pair of boots for the abduction, perhaps one a size too big, he would have gotten away with it. I think too much credit is given to this interview and not enough credit to the impeccable investigation. The detective is asking some pretty common sense questions and he's being very respectful because as far as he knows, he's in a presence of a Colonel and would cause a heat score if he was innocent. The one thing he does do well though, he keeps a no-bs tone throughout. He doesn't get chummy with him like "oh hey colonel I know it wasn't you, can you just provide some samples so we can rule you out and you can head on your merry way?". That really kept the pressure on Williams. However, his strategy to get through that interview is chillingly effective. Right off the bat he pops gum in his mouth - keeps it from getting dry, since our mouths go dry when we get nervous. Also it gives him something to do that looks more inconspicuous than tapping his foot or fiddling with his hands.

Generous ??? He earned that pension through service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which he dishonoured by his unbelievable crimes. It is his pension, he should be made to pass it over to the parents of the women he murdered and the women he raped. Money won't compensate for the loss of their daughters and the mental pain his rape victims and they all suffered, and still do, but it would help them all at least - and that would be a fitting punishment on top of his prison sentence, full stop. It should be mandatory for criminals who receive substantial incomes to compensate the families of their victims and those they assaulted.
DD you can sue in civil court for criminal offences. Wrongful death etc. The award would be millions in punitive damages so why is his pension generous. How would it go back to the taxpayer? By paying every taxpayer $0.00000001?

For all the years I've been watching true crime stories, this is by far the most perfectly executed interrogation I've ever seen in my life.
This detective completely painted him into a corner. He was brilliant.
If you have the chance, take the time and watch the whole interview. It's completely perfect. They should show this to every detective who has just been promoted to homicide.. It doesn't get any better than this..

I agree, he also got vital information from Bernardo; we don't have as many serial killers, as the US, so if they aren't caught in their early killings, they get skilled at avoiding detection. Williams mistake was choosing high risk victims in the beginning, as we saw with Pickton, the pig farmer who tortured and murdered for decades because he chose prostitutes, and homeless people, who aren't investigated as thoroughly. The BC RCMP, was investigated and shamed for the sloppiness, and lack of investigation, of so many women horrificly and needlessly, being murdered bc tips were ignored for so long.
This interrogation video is now part of the class lessons in their training courses of their future investigators.

His interview reminded me of when they interviewed Chris Watts. Both seem to care so much of what their colleagues and their side of the family will think of them and their reputation. But they have 0% empathy and sympathy with their victims families and no remorse of what they have done.
Watts is classic narcissistic personality disorder brought to the point where it becomes psychotic. Look up the term "family destroyer" and you'll find similar cases to Watts. This Russell Williams definitely has NPD, but he was ACTUALLY successful, which is why he doesn't fit normal serial killer profiles. Psycho yes, typical no.

He did have red flags. It was reported when he was younger that he would pick locks and hide in other students closets in the dorm to surprise them. So he was already breaking and entering and getting off on scaring people.

I can't get over the part where he's hiding in this woman's basement and she found him because her cat was staring at him. I have 2 cats and sometimes I don't want to look at what they're staring at. They're smart, but sometimes they're creepy too.

That detective is a hero. He did an incredible job. His hard work isn’t unseen. As someone who’s taken prednisone a ton… yeah it makes you violent but I’ve taken extremely high doses and never got close to physically (sometimes I do be throwing tantrums though) hurting anyone else 🤞🏻. So I feel like… you’d have to have this disposition. So to me that’s not an excuse.
He also tried to frame his neighbor. He randomly asked the guy where he likes to hunt. Then dumped the body in the place where he said.

I find this to be one of the scariest cases simply because of how “normal” and unsuspecting he is. He’s calm and has a relaxed smile... You just never know what people hide..It’s enough to make you paranoid.

Where I come from there is a saying be worried of a man with no lips. He does not look normal at all. His smile is cold his eyes don't show smiling it's weird. You can learn these facial expressions....also there is gut instinct its in your stomach...some people...if you focus on the person in front of you can give you a sensation in your body...if you are uncomfortable analyze why...meditate think....don't worry just be alert. Drugs and alcohol take away this ability. Be safe. Be smart. Trust your gut instinct. Speak with someone you trust about it.

Surprisingly I’ve seen guys do that more than twice in police interviews.
One bad oversight doesn't preclude someone from being smart.
@Sjwaria Law There are so many more facets of intelligence that could override these slight deficiencies in total. You can't judge a person's total intelligence from anything we see here. Be real.
Complete oversight. The police got incredibly lucky that it didn't snow after the crime was committed. They also did an impeccable job with the tire impression database and getting foot impressions. You don't hear about that often. I also don't think he expected them to ask him to photocopy his boot. That's how they got a perfect match - by photocopying his boot. Usually when police get called out for a wellness check they walk around the house, etc which would ruin the footprints that were already there. As much as I hate to admit it, he was smart. He popped a piece of gum in his mouth right away to keep his mouth from drying out and to help keep him from fidgeting, tapping his foot or fiddling his hands. If they only had tire tracks, that wouldn't be enough. A lot of people have Toyo brand tires. Myself included. He didn't realize nor did he expect that they had the footprints. And he definitely didn't expect that by matching his footprints they would be able to apply for, and receive, a search warrant for both his cottage AND his Ottawa home, while he was still in the interview room. I don't know if that was a bluff or not but that's what they told him and that's what cracked him. He had gotten away with all those break-ins and assaults for YEARS and they had no evidence (yet) for the first murder. He was smart, but the investigative process was thankfully, smarter.

If anyone has seen the interrogation footage, I find the details of his confession so creepy and scary. He didn’t mince his words or stumble in any form. That’s even more alarming. The only “feeling” he expressed was disappointment…yeah of being caught. Not a shed of remorse for those women he violated in the worst possible way. I can’t get the images out of my mind of poor Jessica going along with those depraved acts he forced her to do in the hope of being freed only to be lied to and poor Marie finding him in her basement because her cat was just staring straight at him. He should never be released - he’s a serious danger to society.

Fifth Estate did a video on this guy, and Canada 🇨🇦 has one of the best investigators or what ever you call it.

Sure. When I was at Uni, I lived in a Hall of Residence. There were Sub-Wardens on each block, that were PhD students, etc. Ours was eventually arrested for stealing a compressor from a roadworks outside the hall, which he attempted to hide in the bike sheds. Turns out a string of thefts were down to him, also. This guy was friendly enough, drank tea with us, etc. Total kleptomaniac.

The detective doing the interview was impressive. It’d be difficult to interrogate someone with Russel’s rank & arrogant demeanor without causing them to clam up & ask for an attorney. He handled it perfectly. This case is a good example that shows the sick compulsion to kill doesn’t discriminate!

You state that the police “found” the tire tracks in Jessica’s garden. Not so. 2 men drove by Jessica’s late at night regularly and one observant fellow spotted a car, in the field some distance from the Jessica’s house. Then a little later they saw all the police activity. Then the men stopped and notified they had seen a car in the field a couple of nights earlier. It was THEN that the police looked for tracks. It was these tracks that led them to the killers car. If this fellow had NOT have alerted the police re the car in the field it is very likely weather would have destroyed the tracks and they would not have tracked (literally) down the killer. It was this fellow along with good police work that solved the murders.
from what I have seen of Canadian cops they are not to good.
Its called keeping it concise for the sake of the video length bud, how they found prints and tracks is totally superfluous info when you're trying to relay the case in a story format and keep people's attention especially when there's no dispute that the guys guilty. Quit splitting hairs.

"I can only imagine how this will affect my wife"- Those comments made me instinctively roll my eyes. He's only concerned with his reputation and has no remorse for what he did. After the cop called him out, I think those moments of silence was him wondering what he forgot to add to his "How to Get Away with Rape and Murder" SOP that he wrote.

Jim Smyth (the guy interrogating him) is a freaking legend!! He’s known as one of the best psychological profilers in Canada. He’s apart of the BAU I believe and trains many in the field. His techniques and tactics are second to none. He mimics his movements in order to trick his brain into thinking he’s an ally. Amazing work!!
I remember the first time I watched the interview with Russel and I laughed my ass off when he mentions footwear impressions and Russel looks down to see he’s wearing the same fucking shoes he had on during the crime. The interviewing detective is an absolute bad ass. He broke Russell with unaggressive body language and posture, a soft reassuring voice, and a show trickle of evidence. The confrontation we were all waiting for hardly felt as such. What a great job.

You missed a really good detail on why they pulled him over when they were searching cars. He had parked his car next to Jessicas house and some guys were driving past and thought it was odd that someone was parked in a field that late at night. They eventually came back that way and saw police and pulled over and described the car, hence why they pulled Russell over later on and checked his tires.

Yes. The fifth estate video is a great documentary about him. It’s really disturbing. But man very detailed. Those guys seeing that car in the field near the victim is what really got this guy in the hot seat.
Another detail you will find if you listen to raw footage whole interogation. William admits in many cases didnt get an erection and couldnt rape some victims, so i assume to get achievment he started killling women. This gives a light on his motivation. He was impotent and this drives him focus to make hard to satisfy cause in normal way he couldnt made it.

That is incorrect, while people did drive past and see his car and alert police that's not why he has pulled over, I live in Belleville and remember when all this was happening, police were stopping every car driving on 37 and checking tires, he was not pulled over just from the description.

This man was still on active duty when he committed all his crimes. When he was convicted the military acted promptly to remove his commission, strip him of all his medals and awards, and burn the uniforms he had disgraced along with all his military gear.
He was a general, a top ranking official in the Canadian military who was responsible for transporting VIPs like the Queen of England.
His crimes did not just impact the families of those he murdered, it impacted the military and the country as well.
I still wouldn't agree with him receiving his pension if he was retired, but at least I would be able to understand some of the rationales behind the decision.

Jessica Lloyde's mother was my high school's main secretary. Centennial Secondary in Belleville,Ontario for those fact checkers. Mrs.Lloyde was always a joy. I never met Jessica but did know her brother a bit. Great family. Didn't deserve what happened. It was a surreal time, her house is about 10KM from mine, and a stone's throw from my buddy's house we used to drink and smoke at. I remember investigators knocking on my buddies garage door, and there was 10 of us in there smoking weed, they didn't care at all, just wanted to know if we had any info on Jess.
My aunt is a very high ranking Air force officer as well. She worked with Russell. This fucked her up bad especially when they found out he killed Marie it really shook the whole community. He really really affected the way our community behaves today. No more unlocked doors out In The country. I highly recommend watching his interrogation breakdown from JCS.

I've watched this interview in full , several times ,& I have the utmost respect for the police officer who interviewed him . An astounding brilliant break down of a man use to being in charge .
He deserves a place in Canadian history ,& also rightly deserves the right to pass on his outstanding skills to the! Next generation of police officers worldwide .
Detective wasn't even aggressive but he felt so intimated by him and was holding hands in such defensive position the whole time.
Just goes to show that you can't "tell" what a murder looks like. He had a successful wife, amazing stellar career and looked so unassuming with his quiet demeanor. Then he opens his mouth to speak about his crimes like he's taking about changing his oil. It's down right terrifying. People come to my house and say why is it so dark in here. Because I have dark curtains that no one can see in!! I also pack heat by my bed side. These kind of animals are why.

I'm really uncomfortable with people being able to see into my house if I can't see out. Like at night, when you have the lights on inside, the glare makes it so you can't see out but anyone can see in no problem. I always close all of my blinds after sunset. Otherwise I get this quiet anxiety nagging at the back of my head.

The interrogation of this was really good. Detective didn’t have anything, just kind of said he did; the boot and tire tracks weren’t nearly enough, but Russell was like “damn, you got me.”

Right, the whole time I was like tires and shoe prints would never hold up in court since that's circumstantial evidence. But, that interrogator was amazing he made the guy believe they had way more and that's how it's done, baby! He knew that the killer was sitting in that room and was gonna make him give up that information!
