That's a great camo look on the S&W Sport II. This is probably the sixth video I've actively searched for to understand what all of the hullaballoo is all about and why this "Punch" was/is so popular when there exists other, better, and cheaper options on the market. CCI Stingers (JHP, 1640 fps) have always done the job well and are great to break in any new gun. Norma has a "Eco Speed 22" lead free ammo @ $3 a box rated at 1706 fps... flat nosed just like this. Those and Winchester Super X (1300+ fps and available in jhp) come to mind when terms ".22LR" and "self defense" are mentioned. I'd need some _serious_ convincing to try this out just for kicks. What we saw here from the gel test was a lot of overpenetration which is the total opposite of what any caliber SD ammo is supposed to do.
Outstanding content Sir! Love the methodical approach. Your vids are top shelf. Is it just me, or does anyone else find it calming to watch lead projectiles rip through gel?
Originally the 22 short had a 29 gr bullet and the LR a 40 gr, The long consisted of the long rifle case and the short 29 gr bullet. So basically we are back to shooting longs again.
Federal punch and the cci velocitor seem to be the two standards in 22lr defensive ammo. I'm honestly leaning towards the punch a bit since higher velocity seems to make for more reliable expansion.
Glad I found this earlier video you did on the 22LR Federal Punch. From what I have seen thus far, whether 22LR Federal Punch is fired from a S&W 43C or a 22LR rifle it is definitely a deep penetrating bullet and bad news for the "receiver down range".
Glad you and the family had a great vacation, Now, I'm very old school, also was in Military Security for 16 yrs and police officer for 11 yrs using .38 special, then .357 mag, then then the 9mm at which time I left law enforcement because of my personal use of 9mm in Vietnam. Back then the 9mm would not stop a 4 ft nothing person hopped up on drugs, much less a 6 ft persons without hitting 'em with between 3 to 5 rounds. Not trying to give you a hard time cause I really enjoy what you do. As a person who hunts, large game, bird hunts, was in the military security and law enforcement, I have formed an opinion, base on my personal experience. I DO NOT want to discredit you or start arguments with your viewers. To me the difference I see in the CCI, Federal and Winchester, is if you want pure pentation or stopping powder/bullet staying in the body cavity. Even the FBI data relates back to the .38 Special, which is about the same as the subsonic 9mm that is used in law enforcement. So to your users, my question is if use in self defense would you rather have complete pentation going through the body cavity or a round that stays within body cavity doing it's damage that relates in the end to instant death or bleeding to death internally. At the law enforcement school I attended, we studied gun shot wounds, and there the Corners, Trauma Surgeons, stated that outside of the instance damage of large calibers, a .224 cal round, like the .22 LR, 1/000 larger than the AR15/M16 .223/5.56mm, creates the most damage to the human body. Because the bullet will go in one place and end up in another, unless it hits bone mass. So thank you for showing the difference between the different manufactures of .22 LR rounds, leaving the choice up to the shooter. Keep up the great work and hope this post does not cause you problems. If it does please delete my post. After all, it's my opinion, and my experience. God bless and have a great day.
I guess a bit of both. I carry a 40 cal for the same reason(.40 cal wouldn't exist if the 9mm Silvertip did its job). I carry frangible 2000 fps rounds that will penetrate a 3a vest( first round in chamber)and bonded Winchester ranger rounds in mag. I want to cause damage to what I hit leave some fragments and let the next round(s) have uniform expansion and penatration.
Appreciate your comments. I usually carry 9mm with a 4 in barrel because I'm more accurate with 4 in or longer. Often in summer, with lighter clothing; carry a Ruger sr22, 4.5 in. Using CCI Velocitor ammo. Shoots reliably and flat out to 25 yds. My 22lr groups are usually tighter than the 9mm. Would also recommend a Lucky Gunner video. They went to a Federal ammo factory. Federal ppl talked abt a 2200 fps velocity point where a rifle bullet begins to tear a much wider wound path than any slower pistol cartridge can. An interesting discussion. Abt 3 yrs ago. 🤔🤔
Looks like a consistent performer. Might be a great defensive option to stock up on that will give adequate penetration in either a rifle or a handgun. I am tempted to ask to see it side by side with the CCI Stinger. I imagine it would be very close out of a pistol, but would probably expand too much and give shallow penetration out of a rifle.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how far away it looked like you were from the gel. Many TH-cam ballistics gel videos are essentially point blank. I think it’s more interesting when it’s farther away.

Wow, great job, thanks Mr. Buffalo, this video show me how effective is the 22lr special this the federal punch 22lr ammunition for self defense. Because of my job as a driver sometimes carry my 9mm it can be a little bit uncomfortable specifically when it Hot on summer or cold on winter in Florida., Which yeah it got a weird whether change. So last year i bought a Ruger LCP 2 in 22lr for practice/plinking on the range that is more cheaper than shot my 9mm all the time and as a pocket Carry gun. The ammunition that used to carry for self defense was CCI stinger and CCI mini mags, or Aguila Intersector but because of the pandemic it was kind of hard to find. And i saw this ammunition lauch by Federal, and i bought some of then, i shoot it on the range and it runs pretty good on my Ruger but i were still got my doubts about it for self defense. That wound channel from the rifle is not from proof of the HP opening, it is from a cavitation due to higher velocity. Followed by a compression explosion causing the burn marks
Good video...i've always used cci velocitors in my walther p22 with a 3 1/4 inch barrel with great results and perfect reliability....i think I'm gonna stick with them...
I started using the velocitors to run in some pistols that wouldn't feed a slower cartridge. Like the Sig Mosquito. I carry a Ruger sr22, 4.5 in. It feeds reliably. The cartridge in the magazine lines up almost directly into the chamber. Nice flat groups out to 25 yds.
Great video. When I open my gun safer looking for a good, "what shall I carry today" choice I generally skip over the .22LRs. Love the cartridge, and growing up on a farm, I was always impressed with the capability of this little round especially when it came to dealing with threats to the livestock. But I personally believe there is a practical limit to how hard you can push this little bullet, out of a pocket carry gun, before it tumbles or otherwise becomes unpredictable. Rifle performance is another matter and I have no issues keeping a .22 rifle handy for a variety of reasons. So to me looking at a .22LR pocket carry option is not a reasonable option. I do enjoy watching these videos to see how far ammunition technology has come.
If you don't mind sharing more, I would be interested in hearing about the effectiveness of the 22lr against predators on your farm. Were you using a rifle by chance? I have wondered for a while about a 22 rifle for coyotes, within 50 yards...
@@scottphipps3577 I’ve used .22LR on Coyotes out to about fifty yards but I was using a bolt action rifle. Worked well. I’ve also used the shot rounds on rats within 10 feet or so. Other than that the .22LR works very well for small game.
@@jjjsmith2497 that's a garbage answer full of bullshit. You can get a .38 special revolver or a 380acp semi auto for what a 22 pistol costs. There is no excuse
The Punch is designed for Self Defence. That usually happens in a 12-15 yard range. If you want longer range accuracy then you'll need a diffrent round designedfor long range. For self defence you want tumble. Tumbling cuts and tears causing more internal damage. I alternate my mag load with punch and Sniper 60 grain.
The federal 22lr punch was designed to penatrate and that it does very well, better than any other 22lr load,it completely out performs the cci stinger,in my tests it always penatrates better than anything else and that's what your after in 22lr for self defense not expansion, try it on coconuts and gallon jugs of water,2 coconuts and 3 gallon jugs of water it usually stops in the third jug,and that is viscous for a 22lr load,I carry my kel tec p17 loaded with 17 federal punch in it,it's dead reliable and accurate I would not want to be on the receiving end of it,that's a one way ticket to the grave yard
Actually I have a channel update coming soon, I don't want to let the cat out of the bag completely but I am going to be doubling my video output starting in August and that will give me more opportunities to do the "funner" videos like I used to do. So you will see some more of those limitations videos soon.
Cool test. I'm not sure if it is any better than other 22LR or not. What I would hope for in 22LR for self defense use would be enough energy to break bone. Shot placement would obviously be even more critical than for other calibers. That said, no one wants holes poked in them!
I bought 4 boxes of this for my lcp 2. Stuff is really hot. I'm talking ball of flame out the end. Sadly it wasn't reliable in my Ruger. It caused a lot of double feeds in an other wise extremely reliable gun. Sticking to stingers for now and just picked up four boxes of Winchester silver tips today.
Seems like a bunch of us took a little vacation at the same time. That "Punch" ammo is definitely interesting. You look good and rested Buffalo, glad you're back. 👍
Just a guess, but it seems that placing the second gel block against the first one gave the first block rear support, thereby helping it to provide more resistance to the incoming slug.
The first round fired had a much louder report than 2nd and third makes Me think that Federal has a charge consistency issue . All said I believe that revolver 22 Lr would perform satisfactory loaded hot
@chris mclaughlin with automated reloading machines this could be true , even hand loads can be inadvertently double charged but you know this already. I will say this I bought some high quality 357 mag ammo once that was so hot that it flattened the primers and the trigger guard of the big N Frame bit the backside of my middle finger. I pulled a bullet and weighed the charge at 21.5 grains and called the factory who said it was consistent with the round but asked me to ship the remainder of the 50 Rd box . The company sent me back a nice letter claiming that nothing was found out of the ordinary with the cartridges along with 2 full boxes of the identical ammo . On a hunch I pulled a bullet and weighed the charge 19.4 grains it was and the powder appeared to be identical.
@chris mclaughlin Maybe that's true but for anyone reading this who doesn't already know, .22lr isn't going to blow a firearm up no matter how hotly it's loaded, the risk is probably a squib getting lodged in the barrel from undercharging. *Typed this and then remembered .22s with plastic bolts exist. IF you own and are trying to shoot a Zip 22, disregard what I said above and just hang it on your wall and buy something different before it chooses one of the myriad ways it has of hurting you.
@chris mclaughlin absolutely, centrefire rifles are a whole different ballgame and even 22 carries risks as you say. I don't have much experience with federal but it sounds like you've had enough experiences to make dismissing them offhand a bad idea. Edit: I have personally seen far more problems with handloaded rounds than any factory ammo too, for what it's worth. The theoretical precision afforded by doing it yourself is in many cases just that, theoretical.
Flat nose with controlled velocity tend to penetrate deeper. There are videos of 9mm that do the same. The velocity and penetrating effect of punch is a game changer.
Excellent work Buffalo, maybe try a good cheap 40 grain lead bullet next like a Remington thunderbolt to see how they perform in contrast to all these jacketed .22s
@@buffalosoutdoors I appreciate the reply Buffalo, it’s no problem just tryin to help you out. Wanted to see myself anyways cause me and my folks out west in New Mexico and Texas have killed lots of jackrabbits with .22s and lead 40 grain round noses always seemed to kill them just as dead or better than the jacketed and hollow points (and before the Rona they were cheaper too lol)
I would almost be afraid of over penetration on medium sized targets. The Silvertip might be a better option. Still the Punch has the cool factor. I have some segmented bullets from Magnum Research that I like for protection if I only have my .22 with me.

Mini Mag solid's are my go to .22 lr's also. Grew up on CCI and know exactly what their performance in the field are!😚😊 Stinger's hit hard..but not even close on the penetration level.
I run mini mags in my 43c but bought a few boxes of the federal after watching this for the odd times I carry the 22 jframe. I like how they're nickel plated
Darn those Silvertip's are no joke! Those Federal punch are good too, I usually use CCI Mini mag solid nose exclusively but some of these new round's look pretty exceptional too. People just don't take a .22lr seriously, but they kill more people every year than any other caliber.
Forgot to post about .22 LR Match rounds. I shot a Rem 40X (16 frigging pounds, national match grade, with match grade sights out to 50 meters. Today, the best target ammunition I have found is the SK match or SK standard. The same goes for my K-22, 8 3/6 traget barrel, the SK Pistol match is the best that I have found. I totally agree with you on the SX brand, Eley match rounds suck.
She is hotter than a sheriff's pistol up here in western Canada and a tad smokey, so I'm feeling the heat and the smoke and ash is keeping me indoors looking out. I guess ill get my range time with you buffalo.....good info.
I don't know about other semiautomatic .22 LR But my Taurus TX .22 don't like the Federal Punch. Each round nose dives into the feed ramp jamming up the slide. But the 150 Punch I bought will force fine through my Ruger Wrangler.
My guess is if you mic the gaps on each cylinder on your revolver wheel to the barrel you'll see a difference also. You should do your test on the same cylinder. You'll always have pressure loss on them.
It’s always a pleasure to hear someone refer to ‘cartridge’, ‘case’, and ‘bullet’ in the correct context.

Thank you Buffalo for the effort in putting the info out there .
The only problem I see with using this round in a three inch revolver is the brutal recoil.
😂🤣😂
That's why I have nothing to do with them. "wrist breakers"
😂
LOL, for 1/2 a sec i thought you had the limpest wrists in the world.
❓ Huh?! 😜❓
A lot of people dont have much money to have more than a .22-LR.
They cant open a safe and choose their “gun of the day”.
Breaking news there’s Buffalo on the beach, witnesses said it seemed to be domesticated and was well socialized.
😂🤣😂 nailed it.
Hah, you beat Paul Harrell releasing this video 😉
Great video. Thanks much!
God bless all here.
Nice video Buffalo. I really miss the "know your limits" videos. Are you planning any more?
Actually I have a channel update coming soon, I don't want to let the cat out of the bag completely but I am going to be doubling my video output starting in August and that will give me more opportunities to do the "funner" videos like I used to do. So you will see some more of those limitations videos soon.
Cool test. I'm not sure if it is any better than other 22LR or not. What I would hope for in 22LR for self defense use would be enough energy to break bone. Shot placement would obviously be even more critical than for other calibers. That said, no one wants holes poked in them!
From all the test I've watched on the Tube, looks like the Stingers have performed the best, Speer needs a gold dot in 22 LR.
I think they have one
Maybe it’s .22 mag I’m thinking of
I bought 4 boxes of this for my lcp 2. Stuff is really hot. I'm talking ball of flame out the end. Sadly it wasn't reliable in my Ruger. It caused a lot of double feeds in an other wise extremely reliable gun. Sticking to stingers for now and just picked up four boxes of Winchester silver tips today.
Good to see you back again. Got your batteries recharged 👍🇺🇸
I really enjoyed your series on the Federal .22;r Punch rounds. THANK YOU! LMHSr
Seems like a bunch of us took a little vacation at the same time. That "Punch" ammo is definitely interesting. You look good and rested Buffalo, glad you're back. 👍
After trying 50 rounds in my lcp II , it is my new carry round when I use this for deep concealment.
Deep concealment?
You mean you keep it in your prison wallet?
@@BB-1990 I was like, "prison wallet"...?
Then it dawned on me. DEEP concealment lmao
Gold.
thank you Buffalo! glad you guys had a fun vacation!
Glad to see you were able to enjoy some time away with family.
Just a guess, but it seems that placing the second gel block against the first one gave the first block rear support, thereby helping it to provide more resistance to the incoming slug.
More of a tic tac than a slug
Very interesting results, i’m kind of surprised 22 inches, is a lot for a 22 to go through
That Federal punch is amazing!!! Great video by the way
The first round fired had a much louder report than 2nd and third makes Me think that Federal has a charge consistency issue . All said I believe that revolver 22 Lr would perform satisfactory loaded hot
I couldn't tell much difference in the report there at the range but that was a pretty good drop in velocity between those 2 shots. Thanks!
Nice work, 22 inches 29gr. bullet out of a revolver, wow! Might have to find some for my Bearcat.
Glad you are back. Thanks for another great video
Excellent work Buffalo, maybe try a good cheap 40 grain lead bullet next like a Remington thunderbolt to see how they perform in contrast to all these jacketed .22s
Thanks! I always appreciate the suggestions and ideas.... that's what keeps the channel rolling!
Welcome back!!
Interesting.....as always.
Fine job Buffalo
Thank Bill!
Nice video,
Looks like a good winter carry ammo to me
Glad you got some time away from the grinds of daily life with your family Buffalo!
Paul Harrell just did a video on these
... seemed incredibly consistent speed wise....
Thanks for bringing us along buffalo
i just received 3 boxes of that ammo, haven't fired any yet, be shooting an LCP2 22 cal pistol, and hopefully my Tippmann can fire it also.
I would almost be afraid of over penetration on medium sized targets. The Silvertip might be a better option. Still the Punch has the cool factor. I have some segmented bullets from Magnum Research that I like for protection if I only have my .22 with me.
Hey good for you all! Great family time!👍🏾😀❤️🇺🇸
Great video! Love all of your 22lr shows
Glad you and the family were able to take a break.
Thank you! We enjoyed it.
Awesome video. I like the rifle performance for that load
Congrats on your vacation, I hadnt had one in 7 yrs to n went out west a few days, it did me a world of good even too
Hello Buffalo I'm always looking forward to your videos always great content and info. You mentioned you are ready to melt down your blocks just wondering if you can make a video of that seeing that I never see any content about it on any channels. Thank you
Welcome back ! Nice to recharge , do any fishing ? Suprising results in(out) of gel.
Makes me happy with my Tippmanm M422 purchase. Now I just have to order some of these rounds!
Thanks for the video Buffalo, just got back from orange Beach Al on the gulf coast this past Tuesday myself. Really beautiful on the gulf coast hope y'all had a great time.👍👍
That's awesome man. We were on the gulf side as well. We split our time between Mexico Beach and PCB.
You allways do the best tests Thank you
Nice seems like the speed isn’t consistent but the penetration is and also depending if it’s shot through a short or long barrel but penetration is pretty deep
Yo Buffalo!! Hope all is well on your end brother, glad to hear you took a much needed vacation also! Heck I need one myself...especially with the way the country is goin nowadays.😵 Thanks bud & God bless you & yours!🙏👍🇺🇸💯
Thanks man! I appreciate that. Yeah it was long overdue. I am now rested and motivated to get back to my favorite hobby though!
Love the testing on this!! keep up the good work
Another excellent video Buffalo, as always!
Good stuff! I always liked/trusted Federal Ammunition. It surprised me with the inconsistency. Still looks pretty good.
Great video that was exactly what I was looking for!
CCI MINI MAGS are still KING … but these other fellers are nice too
Mini Mag solid's are my go to .22 lr's also. Grew up on CCI and know exactly what their performance in the field are!😚😊 Stinger's hit hard..but not even close on the penetration level.
Frank Atchison : That is the truth!
CCI mini mags are all I use. In .22.
Love these rounds. They really do pack a paunch.
I run mini mags in my 43c but bought a few boxes of the federal after watching this for the odd times I carry the 22 jframe. I like how they're nickel plated
Throw that alarm clock in the lake. Enjoy your time with your family. Cheers from Texas.
Down in Alabama Florida myself this week, having a good time first time here. Great video as always.
Those Punch are no joke!👍
They surprised me with the penetration! Thanks for stopping in man I know you stay pretty busy on your own great channel! Keep up the good work!
@@buffalosoutdoors Thank you brother.😎
Darn those Silvertip's are no joke! Those Federal punch are good too, I usually use CCI Mini mag solid nose exclusively but some of these new round's look pretty exceptional too. People just don't take a .22lr seriously, but they kill more people every year than any other caliber.
Just bought a hundred of these, some for my 22 pistols and some for my Henry lever action rifle, which is where most of it will go I think
Not for me. The Federal punch line in both 22 and 9mm seems like an expensive solution searching for a problem.
Federal hst in 9mm seems better.
Good video. Thanks for the info on this round.
Just bought 500 rounds of these for my tx22,tx22 compact & m&p 15/22
Try the federal punch 22 LR in a HP22A .
She is hotter than a sheriff's pistol up here in western Canada and a tad smokey, so I'm feeling the heat and the smoke and ash is keeping me indoors looking out. I guess ill get my range time with you buffalo.....good info.
I don't know about other semiautomatic .22 LR
But my Taurus TX .22 don't like the Federal Punch. Each round nose dives into the feed ramp jamming up the slide. But the 150 Punch I bought will force fine through my Ruger Wrangler.
Glad you had a good time with the family. They are very, very important.
Thank you David you are so right about that.
These rounds out of a Ruger model 10 would be a great combo of penetration and expansion, by way of flattening the nickel coating at high velocity.
Never underestimate a 22lr, it can hurt someone in a defense mode !!
Although many say 22 ain’t nothing to worry about. I have never had anyone volunteer to stand there and let me shoot you with it!😛🤪
Great show, thank you.
I like your style, Buffalo.
My guess is if you mic the gaps on each cylinder on your revolver wheel to the barrel you'll see a difference also.
You should do your test on the same cylinder. You'll always have pressure loss on them.
I'd really be interested in seeing what the punch would do against bone.
