    Very detailed explanation. I just purchased a lens with haziness. I’ll put your video to good use and bring it back to sharpness that I’d expect from an L lens. I thank you for making this video 🌟

    Thankyou!!! You just saved the day for us. VIDEO SAVED THE DAY! Had lens that needed repair and we could not afford the down time. I used the info I needed and found and fixed the two loose screws that were failing.

      Which two screws were they? Did you need to disassemble the zoom mechanism? I just bought one for $40 with a jammed zoom, and going by the number of comments on this I'm guessing/hoping it's the same 😊
      Is it possible to say at which time in the video feature your loose screws?
      I'm pedantic because I ruined a 28-70 f2.8l by forgetting where the zoom was aligned! I want to avoid a repeat...
      Thanks a million ☺️

    I have to say THANKYOU for your video. I bought a 'non working' F2.8 lens for AUS$300 (About USD$200) and fixed it in about 10 min by putting the focus screws back after they had fallen out. I now have a fabulous addition to my lens stable and saved a fortune! (If you have a fix for a non power up of a 7D I'd appreciate it as well, (well actually my daughter will as it will be her camera) ;-) )

    Hi there. I fixed my lens issue in a way thanks to your help. I got to 6:34 and I got two out of the three screws off. But then, the last screw was not moving and it started to lose its grooves for the driver. It was getting worse so I decided to leave it until I buy a better driver with a grip on it. I did however get out what I needed to get out which was a 9:17 plastic piece and screw that had come loose and was beginning to jam my lens. I can fix that once I can get the other screw that is threaded off. But do you know where I can get a new or replacement screw for the ones at 6:34? I wanna have one ready at hand to replace the worn out one. Seems like a hard one to get and no random screw will do the job. Do you know where I can order one or two of these, or if just a random replacement works from some other device or I can order online? Any help appreciated. Cheers.

      I'm wondering if you remember how you put those plastic bits and screws it? Did you need to strip it down more, and if so did you mark the position anywhere to keep it calibrated?

    This is one outstanding How-To video and I thank you for posting it! My 16-35 took a brief, but hopefully not fatal, dip in the ocean surf, and I now need to try to clean it up following your instructions. Before doing that, however, I'm in the process of editing and uploading your video RUN BACKWARDS to demonstrate the 16-35mm ASSEMBLY procedure! Once done, I'll post it on TH-cam, give you the credit, and follow up here to share the link with you and others. Obviously, since the video is backwards, there will be no sound, just some elevator music. Anyone using my assembly video would want to first watch yours so they have a frame of reference and the steps will make more sense. Wish me luck, and thank you again - as in VERY MUCH!

    Hey Authur, thanks for the run down.... I recently dropped my Canon 16-35... no exterior damage, but I notice the focus isn't reliable. Non-responsive to the focus ring in manual and auto focus... it randomly kicks in then good to go.... not the best state for event shooting. I am gun shy to disassemble, so I will send it to Canon to make it right. It nice to know at least what it looks like disassembled.... thanks. - Mike

    Hey! I've got this lens, AF motor isnt spinning (it had some beer spilt on it) although the focus confirmation does work. My thought was to try and take it apart to clean/fix/replace the motor. You have any thoughts on how to test whether its the motor or the connections/pcb that are preventing it from focusing? (my thought is that if focus confirmation is working, that the PCB is likely okay). Awesome video.

    Hi, after disasambling and re-asambleing the lens, I'd strongly recomend to be EXTRA careful when removing the focusing motor assembly 08:28 in the video, I did that and ripped half of a ribbon flex cable, so now I have a clean, fungus free lens that won't focus, (on the interne you can find $100 focusing assembly's, so its not too bad), but beware when putting out and in this piece. Use this japanese URL as guide (you have the full assembly drawn and with photos): wenku.baidu.com/view/04af1c7a31b765ce050814c4.html put it on the translate google to english and there is a continue reading to have the full parts list.

    In case anyone is wondering, you CAN remove the three small screws under the focus ring to remove the front filter mount. ONLY remove the ones without the plastic ring around them. You will have to pull it a bit because the plastic ring on the inside up against the lens is clipped in and takes a bit to get out. Mine didn't break but be careful.

    • @danielgrove6087
      @danielgrove6087 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I removed those but still can't get the front piece off. I feel I have to remove the labeled ring that surrounds the end glass first. How did you get that part off?

      @@danielgrove6087 Just pull it is slightly glued around the lens ring

    • @Simon-iq1yl
      @Simon-iq1yl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For others reading, for my 17-35 L, I took off the label ring which was glued on, then underneath were two pin holes in the lens surrounds (the bit Arthur was missing) that allowed me to *unscrew* it. It actually held the outermost lens element in place so be careful that doesn't fall out. Then the lens cap ring slides easily off after the three screws mentioned above are removed.

    Is this different then the 16-35MM 2.8 II ? Mine looks different. Mine dropped from 2 ft snapped off the lens from the camera in two pieces. A lot of people complaining how cheaply it's made for a Canon Professional $1, 600 lens. I put my camera on the back seat floor of the car I opened the back door and was on the edge and fell out. After I put it in it must of slid against the door and boom when I opened the door. I almost had a stroke when I saw it in two pieces on my 5D MKIII. Lens laying away from the camera. Luckily the MKIII didn't have a scratch on it My lens broke rite off the camera. Circuit board ribbon cable ripped off the board a black wire hanging I imagine was soldered to the pc board.. No damage to the mount ring or camera except for a loose screw from the lens breaking off. The circuit board has a broken coil on it. I can't believe the cheap build quality. I took it apart somewhat but afraid to go any further. You video really helped but I think my 16-25 2.8 II is different 4 tiny screws into very hard plastic snapped off. Cheaply made! Anyone have any ideas how to fix this. Should I try doing it myself or send it out or anyone have any experience they can share with me? If I send to Canon they will rape me on a repair. The lens is like a 1 yr old like new.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Shawn Luginbuhl I have. It's a bit of a puzzle after. I assume you have taken it apart down to the aperture blades? That is the toughest part of reassembly - getting all of the aperture blades overlapping correctly and facing the correct direction while connected to the outer ring and functioning properly. Once you have that, take a look at the details in the video and reassemble the lens based on the paused video. It is possible, you just have to have patience. Also note you shouldnt touch the aperture blades with your fingers or let any oil or dust on them.

    • @shawnluginbuhl5544
      @shawnluginbuhl5544 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man. I think i got the aperture assembly (the smallest of the barrels) put back together last night. Hopefully the lenses are clean enough. I never touched the aperture blades, but i did notice that through the motion of it it didn't really close up as much as i expected it would. I guess i always thought those blades closed up to almost a pinpoint. they really only close about 50% of the lens they cover. I've got my fingers crossed. worst comes to worst hopefully the parts can be sent to Canon for cleaning and re-assembly haha. Your video is great by the way. Thanks for that.

  • @AgnostosGnostos
    @AgnostosGnostos 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The video is continuously out of focus. This is very annoying. Usually the cameras in a poor lighted environment use automatically a bigger aperture for more light into the sensor. However with bigger aperture, the depth of field is shallow and the autofocus struggles to operate. A better solution the use of more sources of light in the room and the manual selection of a much smaller aperture. The depth of field will be deeper and autofocus will be more efficient.
