Amazing song. Takes me back to 1997. Being 19, working as a scaffold labourer in Guernsey. Lugging year on my shoulder to the back of a property overlooking the town harbour, in the sun, radio one, Chris Moyles, thinking about a girl I’d met. Just no stress and life all ahead of me. Reminds me to love being alive and try to make the most of it!
A criminally underrated song. A Britpop track that was released after the Britpop bubble had burst. Hence it received no radio airplay at the time and sadly isn't remembered today.
Saw them do this at Reading 2000. As they went into the outro, Mark Morriss started singing "People, all over the world, join hands, and form a love chain..." I thought he was a genius.
Saw them last night in Glasgow. They played a version of this called IFvery breath you take with The Police lyrics, it was hilarious... thankfully they played the proper version as well.
If you get out before September Remember that I'm still inside But I'm dry, I'm dry And you, when you try to make a difference You're so different and then I try, and just die, I die You know that I need you more than I want ya But I want ya for all time So I'm, I guess on the line It's all that I can do to Sing these stupid songs to you I give up half my time just Trying to think up words that rhyme I ain't getting any younger But you wouldn't know So it's on with the show Sometimes a smoke a drink and a ponder Can work wonders when you're down Takes your frown, turns it round, around And you when you try to make a difference You're no different than when I try, and just die, I die And now that your day-dream is forgotten and forgiven And the world has been saved, be brave [Chorus] It's all that I can do to Sing these stupid songs to you I give up half my time just Trying to think up words that rhyme I ain't getting any younger But you wouldn't know 'Cause I walk in shadow [Bridge] And I never ever really show my face But I'm only ever seen in the right place [Outro] Na na na na na Na na na na na Na na na na na Na na na na Na na na na Na na na na na
I first heard this on it's release in 1998 and my Girfriend at the time was filling in her University Application, following year 1999 she left for Southampton in September... So that first couple of lines really meant something to me! Years late in the 2010s hearing those lines again in different circumstances, they still had some meaning, this time I was a month away from release from Prison - September 2011 or 12 - no longer with the Girlfriend from way back! I'd been dry for a while and was hoping for a smoke - cigarrette - and I could hear this playing on a radio a few cell doors down from me! I found out later that it was BBC Radio 2 that the other inmate had been listening to! I just think some songs are meant to be heard by so many different people and have various meanings to whoever listens to them, but the opening bass on If... will always stand out to me wherever I am!
Wow, hardly any comments. Such a beauty track. Reminds me of my youth, some fab tracks in the 90s like.
I had it on tape. B-side was a cover of Blue Shadow. Amazing, amazing song. Makes me smile.
Their best song! Fantastic record
Love this tune!
The best bass line ever!!
I find myself humming it randomly!
It's basically Pacabels canon...always a classic though
Oh yeah I see the similarity.
But there are only so many chord progressions in the world that work! I'm sure it's been used loads of times before!
Totally underated band, bluetones are class

This was 98 pal. I worked in HMV when it came out.

Brings back a lot of childhood memories
Every time at the end, Shivers to the Max.

It's a good tune. Calm down with the 'genius' hyperbole.
I saw it at Leeds 2000, they said "This is a very big song with a very small title"
@@goodyeoman4534 Oh do shut up and being a miserable boomer.
I am in love with the guitar on this track. Their best song by far.
Just an all round quality song!
class track from a class band

If you get out before September
Remember that I'm still inside
But I'm dry, I'm dry
And you, when you try to make a difference
You're so different and then I try, and just die, I die
You know that I need you more than I want ya
But I want ya for all time
So I'm, I guess on the line
It's all that I can do to
Sing these stupid songs to you
I give up half my time just
Trying to think up words that rhyme
I ain't getting any younger
But you wouldn't know
So it's on with the show
Sometimes a smoke a drink and a ponder
Can work wonders when you're down
Takes your frown, turns it round, around
And you when you try to make a difference
You're no different than when I try, and just die, I die
And now that your day-dream is forgotten and forgiven
And the world has been saved, be brave
[Chorus]
It's all that I can do to
Sing these stupid songs to you
I give up half my time just
Trying to think up words that rhyme
I ain't getting any younger
But you wouldn't know
'Cause I walk in shadow
[Bridge]
And I never ever really show my face
But I'm only ever seen in the right place
[Outro]
Na na na na na
Na na na na na
Na na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na
Na na na na na

Once again with the George Orwell quote...
If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.
Enjoy.

Marblehead Johnson is brilliant too
tune
We thought this was good in the 90s because we were naive teenagers. This music dont stand the test of time and the lack of views here proves it.
