Strata Florida & the "Bomb Hole" - Wales - Two stock Range Rovers Green Laning

  • Two stock Range Rovers tackle one of the best Green Lanes in the UK. (Bomb Hole @ 10.46mins)
    This was our first go at Green Laning, we were curious to see how we would get on driving this well respected track. Having already watched numerous videos of others taking on the infamous bomb hole we wanted to see if our two stock vehicles could handle this great Welsh challenge. A bit ambitious maybe, especially for our first try at Green Laning but we had two very capable vehicles and thought why not.
    Despite getting a puncture, which was always a risk when attempting this on standard road tyres, we still had a great day out and will definitely do a similar trip again. We may even camp out overnight if we can.
    Next trip will hopefully be the Elan Valley with plenty more footage of the stunning welsh scenery.
    Hope you enjoy the video. Please remember to Subscribe and hit the notification bell if you want to see more of the same. Thank you.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this. I had it on mute whilst listening to a technical meeting but it was simply wonderful background video. Great to see what these cars are capable of in the hands of us "ordinary owners". I have a 3.6 Vogue, my wife has a Discovery 4 and we just collected a Sport for my brother. A video on that one will be coming but this has inspired me to get our stuff off road too now. Thank you.

    Slow and steady, very respectful of these ancient byways. Nice to see standard cars on them. Like it used to be. No black clouds of diesel smoke and chavs in hoodies. It would however have been a different story had you attempted it in February when the rivers are in spate. Good work chaps!

      We did try to be very respectful to the countryside so we can all continue to enjoy places like this in the future. As I have mentioned in another reply, we also did a bit of litter picking on the route to help out. We have no plans to go green laning anywhere when the weather is bad and boggy with the sole aim of getting stuck. We did this and will continue to do trips like this on nice dry days and have a great time just enjoying the countryside and our vehicles. Thanks for your kind words and understanding of what this trip was about for us. Appreciated.

    So glad found this clip, rrs 5.0 s/c 2011 owner since 2012. Do you recommend using the Gap IID tool or similar program to raise the suspension even higher than factory off-roading height for better 4slow offroad clearance? Would that cause any wear/tear on the suspension system at all? I know it might suffer abit of stability or comfort but only short/temporary height raise for some very specific terrain.

      Plenty of kittens were had believe me. I certainly wouldn't do it in poor weather. In fairness though the track is not hard at all in good weather with low water levels, its just very rocky so decent tyres are a must I would say. Nothing I recall that would scratch the vehicles either. Take it steady, don't put a lot of unnecessary strain on the vehicle and just let your Disco do its thing. Great fun, you wont regret it . It is was great to see a film with camera angles from inside and outside the vehicles, and most importantly, no music.
    Oh, and what views. Trees, streams and hillsides. Absolutely gorgeous!! Fantastic. I give all the glory to the One who created it all, the Lord Jesus Christ.
    The film was well put together, the driving careful and considered, and cars unscathed but for the single unfortunate sidewall. Well done!!

    I would definitely advise a second set of wheels with chunky-er tyres. I do this myself on my Disco 4 I have 18" Compomotive PD1881's on her fitted with Cooper ST Maxx tyres for this kind of stuff I did Sarn Helen in her earlier this year while it was open and restrictions were temporarily eased. Made it look easy really.
    Normally 20" rims for motorway and normal road cruising, you don't need compos per se, but you should be able to get an 18" rim on those RR's but check out what the smallest size is, I would be inclined to think 18".
    The other thing I would suggest is you invest in a set of rock tree sliders. If you slide sideways a bit, and, it can happen, the metal slider will take the abuse, and not your car door. You can also get them coated so can be used to provide a rung up into the vehicle too. Some people go a bit crazy with underbody protection sump guards, steering guards the full works most of this stuff is a con IMO, rock tree sliders and a compressor guard are really all you'd need.

    • @WindinyourSails
      @WindinyourSails  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @WindinyourSails
      @WindinyourSails  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was more the tyres on the L322 that were arguably unsuitable. It had stock Pirelli Scorpions with a fairly low profile on big rims (fairly low profile). Decent all terrain tyres on a smaller rim with higher sidewall and sidewall reinforcement would have been much more suited. Not saying you couldn't get away with stock road tyres but as the track is quite rocky you run the risk of a sidewall puncture which is exactly what happen to the L322.

      Excellent. Loads of ground clearance, Terrain response was brilliant (cant imagine how good the new ones must be). Engine purred, loads of torque so hardly any revs needed to tackle pretty much all of it. I have seen lots of videos of others doing this track and most of them seem to give their vehicles loads of revs and go much faster. Our experience in both vehicles was much more sedate. I think the fact they were both automatics helped as you have much more control. Hope you enjoyed the video.

      Mud Terrain tyres don't damage the ground any more than any other types of tyres, and are certainly not a "menace". Have you ever driven a vehicle with MT tyres, because I suspect you have not. Tyres only dig holes when they are spinning, and a grippy tyre is less likely to spin. More damage is done to lanes by unsuitable vehicles with unsuitable tyres, spinning and skidding whilst trying to drag themselves along, than by properly equipped vehicles that just roll over the ground. And as for suspension lifts which you also say "are not necessary", I wouldn't want to tackle anything rougher than this lane (which is quite easy going) without one. These vehicles were near the limits of their abilities with their standard tyres and ground clearances. If there'd been any deep mud they would've certainly got stuck. You saw in the video how the back end of that Range Rover was dragging on the ground whilst climbing out of The Bomb Hole. He only just made that without damaging his car. And if that water crossing had been a bit deeper then that could've been a very expensive drive, Anyone who knows anything about offroading will tell you that a standard vehicle, even a Range Rover, will only take you so far. If you want to do it seriously, a modified vehicle is very necessary.

      @@keithrushforth4019 Some valid points there Keith. Lets not forget though this was green laning in nice dry weather which is very different to off roading. The two vehicles were within their capabilities for the conditions. If you are doing serious off roading then mud terrains, winches and lifts etc are a must for sure. Unfortunately most of the damage done to our fantastic green lanes is not down to the vehicle or its modifications its down to the person behind the wheel. Drive it right, with consideration, and all is good. Thanks for taking the time to comment, hope you enjoyed the video overall. Cheers
