The technical virtuosity of the duo is beyond any doubt. The concert has two distinct phases - a deeply meditative and moving quality when played in a measured, reflecting, and slow tempo; and a bewildering assault on the senses when played at a lightning tempo. The brothers have been performing for decades now - their children are vidwans in their own right. Thus, Vidwans Nagaraj and Dr Manjunath don't have to prove anything. While demonstrating (rather unnecessarily) their control over the instrument in a couple of compositions may be understandable, the fetish on supersonic speed in every aspect - raga alapana, krithis, sahitya vinyasa, and kalpana swaras is puzzling. Pray, can any rasika follow the patterns at that speed? I would very respectfully request the immensely gifted brothers to move beyond the pursuit of speed and into the realm of music that touches and heals the soul.
