I am a retired UPS driver. Those trucks get so hot on hot days that you can't even touch the metal shelves inside the truck. It's brutal, and if you get sick from the heat they will blame you and tell you that you are not working safely. I am so glad to be done with that part of my life.

Then by UPS's logic they shouldn't be equipping their vehicles with heaters either, though I believe those are mandated by law. Of course, you need the heat to clear the windshield. Hmmm. So perhaps they should remove the windshields.
I can attest as to how hot vehicle interiors can become. Part of my work is with Fire Alarm systems. At one point I had a conventional fixed temperature (135'F) heat detector in the back seat. I pulled it out to use and found it had activated, This was during the summer several years ago.

My phone even stopped working because it got so hot inside and it told me to cool it down before using it again. I would take my packages a little later for the UPS driver to be able to take a break when needed. UPS needs to cut cost in other ways, how about removing all those cushy office jobs of the ones who are sitting there monitoring every little move and put that salary towards some damn breaks!

Just as an aside, air conditioners are not that efficient when doors are opened and closed frequently in addition, they add cost to the fleet and maintenance can be a headache. Air conditioners are better used on the Long Haul trucks. Fans are very effective on trucks that have the doors left o pen during the routes. IE garbage trucks. Garbage men in the San Francisco Bay Area easily hit six figures annually with full medical benefits and a decent retirement. Like UPS, it's hard work hot, sweaty and sometimes crappy weather. Generally, the customers appreciate what we do for them. Offering, ice water, ice cream Etc to the drivers on hot days. Every job has its ups and downs. At least some of the UPS and some of the garbage jobs have great wages with excellent benefits.

Just know one thing: Being a driver or hub/warehouse worker for UPS (or even FedEx or Amazon) IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! You have to be in excellent physical (and even mental) condition for jobs like those. It's like the Army, in a way. You gotta be able to handle what's being thrown at you on a daily basis. I used to load the semis for UPS on muggy summer nights when I lived in Pittsburgh. Trust me, it's not fun. Less than 3 hours into it (only a 4 hour shift), you were drenched. Thank God they had lockers and showers there where you can get cleaned up when your shift ended. My boss was actually great (and helpful). Ultimately, a bigger calling was in store for me (and one that wasn't physically demanding) and I just couldn't do it anymore. I miss it in a way, though.

UPS doesn’t care about any of their employees nor do they support their drivers in any way, and driving, while it does have the potential to be a very good job, is way too challenging of a job to do without support from the company. Instead, all they do is throw as much shit on you as possible and do many things to hinder your performance and they always blame you for it. I only lasted two months driving for them. Made my 30 days only to quit less than three weeks later. If I wanted to be treated the way they treated me then I would much rather join the military instead.

I once had a driver turn up from DPD here in the UK to collect a parcel, I saw him turn up so I went outside and handed him the parcel to scan to go on his way, but he couldn't scan it yet and go because he had arrived 2 minutes early and he had to wait the 2 minutes before he could scan the parcel in and go. Jeez how these guys work for such controlling companies is beyond me, they watch your every move.

Most of the time In my situation they follow you to make sure you’re working safely and efficiently. When they do follow me the only criticism I get is I’m not working safely enough 😂. Copied here from my response to a comment below:
I delivered mail for 11 years and it was pure hell back in the '80's and '90's before they installed GPS trackers in the seats so they'd know when your butt left the seat. Heard not much has changed. Management treated us like we were subhuman. Thought we were all liars, followed us around to catch us doing something wrong. I worked in the heat and humidity without A/C in Florida, just a TINY oscillating fan, which was brutal in the summer months, and we couldn't drive around with our doors open like UPS. We stood for HOURS casing mail without a break before we had to load all the mail and boxes and then spend more hours delivering. I delivered mail from bikes and walked routes in the rain with no protection from the weather or dogs or weird people, outside of pepper spray. WORST job I've ever had!!! Hated it from day one, didn't leave sooner because everyone kept reminding me how great the pay was. When I walked off the job after continual abuse, it was the best day of my life!! REALLY!! I lost 3 times my pay on my next job. Still here after almost 23 years. LOVE the way I'm treated, never regretted leaving that HELL hole, even with the massive pay cut!!!

Your story reminds me of a friend of mine. She got a job with the postal service here in NYC at their main branch on 34th Street. She started around the holidays on night shift. Twelve hour days from 6pm to 6am would get home at 8am. Told me people are in that place like zombies. The pay was great, night bonus + all the OT check was real nice. She just couldn't handle it had to resign after about 4 months. She was in tears feeling like she was a failure. Told her not to worry about it sometimes you gotta know what you can't handle. She at a new place now for over a year and loves what she does. Money is not good but she's happy with it.
