Your reversible quilt is beautiful. Did both sides of your quilt come out even? Yes, it is a bummer when your machine acts up while quilting. Sewing through so many layers of fabric is hard on any sewing machine. The last time I did a lot of machine quilting, both of my Kenmore sewing machines acted up (the bobbin area fell out of one of them, and the foot control kept getting stuck in a running position on the other). I ended up finishing the quilting on my Singer 301 antique sewing machine. The more modern machines just don't hold up as well. I need to take at least five of my sewing machines in for servicing. Two of them also need repairs. Two other sewing machines need to be given away; because, I just don't like to use them. The Potato Chip method is a good addiction; because, it will not hurt your health and you get to have a lot of fun while making beautiful quilts.
Yes, Arvetta, miraculously they did match up! I was very fussy with my spray basting and basted the edges well so nothing would move while I was quilting it. I've been down to one machine for the last 20 years and this baby has been a champ. It's the electronics that are being weird. While I'm just sitting at my machine it starts to sew on it's own. Then it stops for awhile. Then it goes again! So crazy. Hopefully they can get it fixed. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
You're right, Andi! Straight lines are generally quite manageable for most. Otherwise nice wavy lines are incredibly forgiving. 🤣 Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Thank you for going over the diamond quilting. I just finished my potato chip quilt; so easy. Now I'm going to "try" the diamond quilting. So much fun!
You'll love it, Andrea! It's just simple straight stitching so you'll do just fine. Enjoy the adventure! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I was wondering which of the potato chip blocks to try, but you've solved that problem. I can make each version and just make a double sided. Thanks! 😍🥰
Your quilt is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing. You’ve inspired me to try both the potato chip pattern as the diamond quilting. Like you, I’ve always ended up with squares. Will try 60 degrees plus 30 degrees.
They certainly are, Vera! And so surprising to see finished. 😊 I still have a few more ideas I want to do with these wonderfully silly blocks! There aren't many cut pieces left in my pile. It'll take me at least a day to do more cutting! That's what I'll be doing while my machine is in the shop! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Thanks so much Neva! 😊 It lightens the overall look so we're not just seeing the dark, saturated colors. Besides I love my low volume fabrics! Thanks for stopping by. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
I do the same with ironing board on my left. I have trouble with quilt hanging and dragging on my right. I put quilt on my lap and pulling it up on my chest but still falls and drags. Any suggestions. Don't have another ironing board or table.
Good question, Phyllis! Helen's idea of a pillow would work great! I generally roll my quilt and drape it over my shoulder which works quite well. It makes me think about those wonderful new machines that have the super wide sewing area! If only... 😊 Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
It works like a charm, Deborah! Otherwise who knows where my quilting lines would end up. 😂 Thanks so much for following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
That's a fantastic idea, Janice! I bet they look awesome. Thanks so much for sharing that tip! Sure appreciate you following along! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
It's all about the quilts stealing the show, Pam! But I'm here to inspire you along on your quilting adventures too! Let's keep the creativity flowing. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Thank you so much for the ironing board tip for quilting. I use my embroidery machine to do end to end quilting. My issue is the fabric that lays over the embroidery arm is too heavy ( once I get toward the right hand side) so it cause the machine to ask for a reset. Using the ironing board to help with that load is so helpful. I tried doing the reverse order flipping the quilt around and it still did it so now I can go straight across and no issues! Thanks again
I absolutely love EVERYTHING about that quilt! I’m looking forward to trying diamond quilting but will definitely practice beforehand so as not to get squares or parallelograms. I hope your sewing machine only requires an easy fix. Thank you!!
Your potato chip quilts are very pretty, I haven't made one yet, but you are tempting me. My machine is in the shop now getting serviced. I'm using a backup machine and it is taking a bit to get the hang of it.
Oh no, hopefully you won't have to wait too long to get your machine back! I dropped mine off today with great hopes of an easy fix. Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Your quilts turned out great! I love your fabrics! I made a reversible table topper and quilted with diagonal seems. That makes squares. I am going to try diamonds on my next project.
Thanks for the great video! You always provide great ideas and tips and tricks😀 One question though about diamond quilting….when you used the 60 degree angle, you spaced your lines 2 inches apart When you went the other direction using the 30 degree angle, how far apart did you space your lines? It looked like 2.5 inches but wasn’t sure Thanks for your help
It should have been 2.5-inch in both directions, Marcia. I checked the quilt and I'm pretty sure that was the distance in both directions unless I was off on one row of stitching. It certainly can happen! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
This quilting was done from side to side beginning down the center, Stephanie. Then I work towards the edge, turn the quilt, and sew the other half. Free motion quilting usually begins in the center and works outward in an all over pattern. Sure appreciate you watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Tricky, Kathryn! First I made sure they were the same size. When I placed the backing down on the floor, I taped it well to keep taut and it in place. I placed the batting starting in one corner, keeping it just an inch from the edge in both directions. That way I could see where to line up the quilt top. As I laid the top I checked that it aligned with with the backing every few inches. With just an inch of batting it was easy to check. With those two sides in place I also checked the others and they needed a bit of adjustment but not much. Once the top was in place, I lifted it in sections and spray basted it making sure the adhesive was especially heavy around the edges. So far with the quilting I've done everything has stayed in place. Just take your time as you lay each layer. I thought about hand basting the edges together but decided the adhesive would do the trick. Pins may also be a good option, too. Help this helps! Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Yes, I most always use cotton thread, Evelyn. Quilting thread is usually 40wt though I know many quilters use a 50wt. I just haven't tried it yet and I'm sure it'll do a good job. When I'm piecing I'll use a 30wt or 40wt depending on which color works. I've also combined threads in one quilt without problem. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Patience, taped the backing to the floor, and a good coat of spray adhesive. It worked quite well, Dawn. But it can be fussy! Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
Good question, MaryJo! Though the original name of this block is still a mystery. I've found it being taught at a quilt retreat in the 90's as a 'Lumberyard Quilt'. More recently it's been called 'Scrappy Rectangles'. The latest name began a couple years ago. Lots of quilt patterns were being published between the 1930s - 1960s but I've not had luck finding this one. I'm hoping a viewer may know the answer. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
The funniest part was when I stopped, it would start sewing again on its own! I actually stepped away from my machine and it started sewing again. Hopefully I'll hear good news today. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

My sister-in-law, an avid quilter, had 7 machines so she would always have a working machine.
Sounds like my machine collection problem 🙄 😅😊
Gosh that’s a pretty quilt!! Love the diamond pattern, thank you for the tips and for showing us how. As a visual learner this is invaluable 🥰
Being a visual learner I understand exactly what you mean! Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting,

This style of quilting is a great way to quilt on your own. It’s the way I learned. It’s fun watching you do it. I swear I could feel the fabric.

Very Beautiful Quilt! I absolutely love 💕 how you work these colors into your quilts… could we go out shopping for fabric to teach me? 😉💜
I was wondering which of the potato chip blocks to try, but you've solved that problem. I can make each version and just make a double sided. Thanks! 😍🥰
Glad I could help, Maryanne! Be sure to cut plenty of blocks. 😊 ✂ Thanks so much for following along! Happy Quilting,

I think this one might be my favourite!🙏😘 I love how you break up all the colors with a light blender.

I put a Queen size pillow in my lap to help! Works for me. 😉💕🧵

I use this pattern on the face of potholders. The size rectangles measure two by three and one half inches. They are real cute.

a lot of the quilts I do, I make my backing with material from the front with potato chip quilt
Where do you start sewing on the quilt at sides, middle? I've only quilted by hand not on a machine and I want to try it.
This quilting was done from side to side beginning down the center, Stephanie. Then I work towards the edge, turn the quilt, and sew the other half. Free motion quilting usually begins in the center and works outward in an all over pattern. Sure appreciate you watching! Happy Quilting,

Got any tips or tricks for how to get the two sides of the quilt to line up when you are basting them together with the batting.
Tricky, Kathryn! First I made sure they were the same size. When I placed the backing down on the floor, I taped it well to keep taut and it in place. Thank you for your video. May I ask, what weight thread do you use for your quilting. And is it cotton? Thank you. 💗
Yes, I most always use cotton thread, Evelyn. Quilting thread is usually 40wt though I know many quilters use a 50wt. I just haven't tried it yet and I'm sure it'll do a good job. How did you ensure that both of the quilts were lined up to sandwich them?
Patience, taped the backing to the floor, and a good coat of spray adhesive. It worked quite well, Dawn. But it can be fussy! Thanks for watching! Happy Quilting,

Who designed the potato chip block?
