    Fox 38 or RockShox ZEB fork, which would you choose?
    (*Note, one mistake in the video, the 38 actually has high & low speed rebound, Zeb has a single rebound adjustment. My bad! - Jeff)

      Already bought the Zeb. Cant compare to the 38, but compared to my overtight bushing 36 its superb. Even without the bushing issue, I need all the strength I can get as I tend to bomb rough socal trails and I'm 205lb rtr. Much more confident in the steeps, off camber turns, etc. I also had csu concerns with the 38, as well as general availability! Cheers and thanks for the video.

    As a wise man called Seth's bike hacks said once:"i think that the brand of suspension these days doesn't matter cause everybody at the high end market is doing such good stuff and I think that dialling in your suspension can do more positve stuff than the brand you are riding."

  • @symmetricon1982

    If you can't tell the difference then doesn't the Zeb win being a good bit cheaper?

    • @justinmcnab5585
      @justinmcnab5585 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Not really. The extra $200 is all about the amount of adjustability the Fox has. Fox suspensions can be tweaked to get the best of all worlds, making them perfect in any and every situation.
      If you're riding similar trails all the time and want more value for the money, go for the Zeb.

    • @aidenthwaits2646
      @aidenthwaits2646 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Justin McNab but to be fair the range of adjustments on the fox can only do so much. Eventually they start to cancel out and not do anything to change the ride. However the extra rebound adjustment, floating axle and the bleeders are nice on the fox

    • @symmetricon1982
      @symmetricon1982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@justinmcnab5585 I was simply responding to Jeff's comments that he really couldn't tell a difference on the trail. Also, more adjustments doesn't necessarily equate to better performance and I'm guessing Jeff is probably a better rider and more skilled at tuning that both of us but I may be wrong. I'm not biased either, and if I was it would be towards Fox as it's the only suspension components I've really owned or ran.

    as a motocross guy and engineer the air bleed is a big thing! its something you can actually feel. especially when the fork gets older. when the seals get older they suck air in. a new fork or serviced fork won't do that. the weekend warrior riding the fork long years will love it.

  • @pkreishman

    If they perform identically and one is lighter and cheaper, that would seem to answer the question pretty well, no? :) Also, a few threads have already popped up online about the dreaded Fox CSU creak appearing on the 38 as well... I switched to RS in the past year because I feel like the dampers are 1. simpler and 2. seem to perform better if you're not always pinned while they're equal going fast, and the Zeb won out for me. It's an incredible fork. I would've paid an extra little bit on the retail price to have the bolt-on fender included, though. Tiny little gripe there.

    Over the years I noticed main difference and what you pay the extra money for with FOX is this
    Maintenance
    Fox's maintenance schedules are usually twice the time that Rockshox are.
    Fox average 100 hrs between servicing and only 50 hrs for Rockshox.
    If you get someone else to do your wrenching that's going to add up quick at 75$ an hour for shop rates. However if you do your own wrenching rockshox tend to be easier to work on an are home mechanic friendly. Other then that I've found little difference between the two companies over the years.

    Ok, so here's the thing about bleeding the air from the lowers. If air pressure builds, you will feel it the most at high elevation. The fork will feel harsh up high, then smoother as you descend. I've been doing the zip-strip trick for a while and can tell a pretty significant difference. Esp over small chatter over 8000 ft elevation. I'm happy Fox added bleeders, and hope Rock Shox adds them at some point. Either way, I only need to bleed my Lyric once a month, or so..

    I went with the fox because I preferred the colour combo with my bike and I’m kinda happy that they both preform the same because I was told the zeb was better but that was from people that own the zeb 😂😂

    I doubt I’d ever need 38mm stanchions at 70kg.

    So many mixed reviews on this.. Seb @BikeRadar did some scientific tests that were backed up by some interesting insights. He says the Zeb is designed to sit higher in its stroke, and has a slight top out, whereas the Fox 38 sits lower and has less initial resistance. The Lyric 2020(?) and older models were super supple, but the 2021 update less so, and the Zeb follows that same path. Seb reckons that the Fox38 leap frogs Rockshox in this supple small bump sensitivity. To me that's a game changer.

    I’d love to give the 38 a go. Currently using a lyrik with hi/low and rebound in a 180 and I find its small bump sensitivity isn’t awe inspiring. I run it full open and still deflect a lot. My 40 on the other hand doesn’t (I run them both at 20% sag). I understand totally different kind of suspension dh vs enduro but I find it hard to be inspired in the chunk. The lyrik does jump well though.

    Worldwide Cyclery - have you ridden the Manitou Mezzer? If so, how does it stack up to Zeb and 38? All of these fork manufacturers have issues. Putting creaky CSUs and bushing play aside, which one takes the personal preference?

But the zeb is 990€ and the top 38 is 1499€ i think in europe, so my next fork will be rock shox. Anyways nice informative video thanks guys. Cheers from hungary.🍻

    That axel on the fox can make a massive difference if the hub tolerance is out..this system has been on mx bikes with years, and believe me if the forks are pinched it will feel terrible, aswel as destroy the fork bushes and oil seals...only problem is it is easy to clamp them down in the wrong position and mess it up, so need to take your time and do it carefully and ensure the axel is clean.

    So this makes me wonder how the new 36s fare with their changes that have trickled down from the 38. Do they feel stiffer? More supple? Or is it much the same story that there's no discernible difference between the old and the new unless you're a world class athlete?

  • @rupedog

    RockShox themselves state that fore-aft stiffness is 2% better on Zeb v Lyrik.

    My current fork, (2005 RS Pike coil team) has the old U-turn feature, so I can dump it from 140mm down to 120mm or 90mm for a long fire road climb. it's kind of cool, but I'd be fine if it was just a 140mm fork all the time.

  • @yakbiker75

    Being 265lb on a 180mm devinci AC e-bike I'm guessing either of these will be a great upgrade. The lyrik on my Patrol was great but the 36 on this bike feels a little under gunned.

  • @ssjj9584
    @ssjj9584 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    On my rockshox160 Lyrik when I put the compression on the hardest setting and do steeper trails with more compressions the “hard” setting clicks back to medium on its own. Then I have to click it back before other compression features. I tried more air in the fork but it still does it. Super annoying when I want the fork to stay on the hard setting for the “whole” duration of trail. Have you seen this before??

    I think if performance is the same then tuning ease etc perhaps comes into it? I know when it came to my tuning my RockShox Super Deluxe Coil Select R (omg the longest name ever) it actually took me less time to tune it to perfection than writing the name. Use a spring calc, get the right lb spring, a few tweaks and waist height drops feel like they are 15cm
