I always love how Chief's answer isn't a simple "yes," to McMurphy's question but with a smug "you bet your ass." It reveals his personality and reveals that he is in fact completely lucid and responsive.

Yeah that surprised me too. But in the book we know from the beginning he is fooling them, since he is narrating. The film does well to make this a plot reveal since a narrator is not necessary.

I was always curious about how lucid Chief really was because even in the book he's still portrayed as pretty competent and knowledgeable but is also troubled by extremely hallucinations. Outwardly there is never any indication as to the nature of his condition, people probably just interpret the muteness as a lack of cognitive function rather than a coping mechanism for extreme trauma.

Arundel:1) habitational name given to the Dukes of Norfolk seat / 2) nature aspects birds plants, nasty women.
Which would you prefer is to be? Or go to? Probably actually saying Canada yet actually meaning Zion and/or the sides of the North.
One would think they killed him to keep him from going there. However, the tragedy behind this classic comedy/drama is that they destroyed a gifted mind, but chief smashed out a window to let them know it doesn't really end there, in an Institution. It was never intended for his spirit to be chained down.
Part 2 was never released because Jack Nicholson went South to LA to make "Anger Management" with 'Adam Sandler." Of course one has to wonder if that means that he took his place amoungst the sands of the sea?
Meanwhile, Chief realizes that he can't escape his destiny even with Jack Nicholson gone. Therefore, he remembers the "Pretenders: Chain Gang" .....The "Georgia Satellites: Battleship chains"..... "5 Finger Death Punch: Bad Company".....
      "Passenger: Let her go".....
He reasons that he must make some changes in many areas, even cutting and adding to his links if he is to be successful.
He then packs up his "5 to stay alive" and his 2 sticks of "Juicy Fruit,' breaks out a window and heads for either open or closed territory, Fishing, bicycling, swimming and hiking.
He calls his first new Venture bald eagle aeronautics..... Helicopters included.

It's easier to know he's not since the book is told from his point of view. He talks consistently about the "Combine"--which is his hallucination of machinery hidden throughout the ward that Nurse Ratched "controls" (he always talks about her being able to run everything from inside he station behind the window). All that changes when McMurphy shows up, though.

It'd be an even better scene if the situation wasn't explained to us. We are not stupid, we get it ... we don't need it to be spelled out for us. It's common in many American films, but you expect it not to happen in something of this quality. It robs the moment of its subtlety and makes it less dramatic.

What strikes me most about this scene is how excited and happy McMurphy is to learn the chief isn't "deaf and dumb." It's that moment when we learn that while McMurphy may be crazy, he cares about many of his fellow patients.
**Love the comments. To those who say McMurphy is NOT crazy, that is absolutely never established and entirely up for debate. Is he crazy in the way that Danny Devito and Christopher Lloyd are? No of course not. But there are many different ways to have mental issues to the point of crazy. His propensity for violence can easily qualify him. Did this particular mental ward suit his issues? Probably not. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have serious mental health issues.

I’ll tell you why I love this scene and why it chokes me up. I worked with disabled patients for years and there has been so many occasions where patients that are considered off in their own world, have opened up to me when we’re alone, far more than they do with anyone else.....even their own families. I guess they know they can trust me. They know I care about them. They let me in. There are people in there who are waiting to to be noticed. But because these people are considered a nuisance by family and “work” for aides who are paid garbage salaries, these people are left in a place where no one wants them or wants to be bothered with them.

Maybe Chief( Mr Will Sampson rip) knew deep down why he was there, in the movie he played a observer something Natives know, without reacting many times sad in real life, Will Sampson said volumes without saying much I think he helped his friend endure in the movie he witnessed a lot of nonsense, in a movie or in real time life, we notice or witness lots of funny motives questionable that's when having our higher power really does keep us trusting in them, for me it's Jehovah God and His Son The King Christ Jesus I'm grateful for the Lords Prayer I believe it! The movie is a reminder to not forget people many are without family friends a connection to God yet. @Jack Wehrung The book has a continuity error in it though :) Remember in the first chapter, the Chief was in the asylum thinking back on the events of the past few weeks or months? Then the rest of the novel was a flashback of everything that happened, beginning with McMurphy's arrival and leading up to the Chief smothering McMurphy with the pillow and escaping. Well, if he escaped, how did he end up back in the asylum again, having the flashback in the first chapter? Things that make you go "hmm" :o)

DevilFish69 That's crazy sick you still recall that there was an ad on tv of Chief and Juicy Fruit gum. Definitely would be very difficult to find the ad on the net as you would rely on someone having a VHS recording device, that taped ads in 1976, and kept the tapes for around 40 years and deciding to get them digitalised to put it on their computer and then to load them up onto TH-cam. And if there are uploads of those specific regional ads from 1976 onto YT, you yourself would have to go through hours of ad recordings to find Chief and his iconic Juicy Fruits

    • @DevilFish69
      @DevilFish69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

I remember it like it was yesterday. The ad was still playing around 1977/78 because I believe that was when the film was released on TV. Remember in those days you had to wait a few years for a movie to air on TV after its theatrical run because there was no home video market. I remember he was on a stoop with a bunch of kids and they were chewing Juicy Fruit with the jingle playing. I tell you that commercial and the Ideal Jaws game commercial from 1975/76 are 2 commercials I've been dying to see again but I can't find them anywhere.

But I do know that when I first saw this in 1975 at the age of 18, it affected me like no other film I’d ever seen and it made me doubt every institution I’d been brought up to respect. McMurphy is the classic iconoclast who bucks the system and pays the price for swimming against the tide. How can you not love the character we all want to see in ourselves?

This is my favourite movie of all time, and this is my favourite scene. The whole premise up to this point is that Randall is playing the system by pretending to be crazy, so getting a comparatively easier ride than if he'd gone to a conventional prison. It turns out that the Chief has fooled the system way more than Randall. I still can't watch the final scenes without tearing up, and I'm not a guy who tends to get emotional too easily.

      Will Sampson
A Native American actor of the Creek Nation, Sampson's "big break" came from his memorable role in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) opposite Jack Nicholson. He was also starred opposite Clint Eastwood in the western The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976). He had supporting roles in Orca (1977), The White Buffalo (1977) and Fish Hawk (1979). In 1986, he co-starred in Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) as a Native American shaman. He died of complications from kidney failure and malnutrition during heart and lung replacement surgery in 1987 and was buried on the reservation where he grew up.

This is weird. Is TH-cam able to read thoughts? I’ve been remembering this scene over the last week. Now it turns up!
It so happens that around 20 years ago I had the privilege of meeting a Native American who had had a significant supporting role in WW2. He had been an armourer on Tinian Island and had been part of the team that prepared the A-bomb which burst above Nagasaki in August 1945. His part in that action still weighed heavily upon him. He admitted to me that colleagues had written unpleasant messages on the bomb casing, but that he had declined to be part of that. He said that he’d felt so sorry for everyone involved. From the ground Tech team, to the pilots, to the Japanese civilians in a city which was not the original scheduled target (the aircrew had to bomb visually - the original target was either Kyoto or Kokura if memory serves me right.) When I met him he was in his early 80s, but still an energetic, fully cognisant man. He had never forgotten what had happened back then, wasn’t proud of it, but was glad to be alive. The other weird thing was that several years earlier I had interviewed a surviving British POW from the Nagasaki attack. He had been working on a freighter in the harbour when the bomb exploded. His name was Dick Cheyne. I still remember what he told me in graphic detail. The hugely bright blue-white light and the intense heat on his back. Again, he gave thanks for being allowed to be alive.
Sorry for this recall. It’s just that for some reason this scene brought so much back.

This is the finest example of how important casting is. Each of the characters in this is superbly played...and I cannot imagine anyone else in those roles.

Actually in the book, chief was a narrator in the storyline, observing around him, till mac showed up, and took on nurse ratched, who was possibly more physcho crazy than all the patients together with her extra dose of cold venomous evil.Lunatics were running the Asylum in orderlies, and nurses uniforms

Chief was the coldest actor. He had everybody fooled. That’s how you gotta be in life: Quiet, observant and let ppl think you’re dumb ♟

not sure if he fooled anyone. clearly there is something wrong with him. no sane person would be doing this.

I never realised the Michael Jackson episode of the Simpsons was a reference to this movie. I love how the episode even included the chief as well.
MJ: This is the chief. He's been here for 20 years and never says a word.
    Homer: Hey there chief.
Chief: Hello (doctors gather round and start taking notes) Well it's about time someone reached out to me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My dad said he got to drink some beers with Will Sampson in Oklahoma during the late 70s. Ran into him at a local bar. He was an honored guest in town.
