See a film of his and you and you trust that you are in good hands. Yeah, there may be bad films here and there, but he is never less than mesmerizing in any role.

An actor needs material. The main reason this movie is so amazing is that Ken Kesey wrote one of the best novels in history. If you dig the movie I strongly suggest reading the novel. A lot of it is told from the point of view of The Chief. It is well known that Kesey used a lot of psychedelics. I have read that he specifically used some type of psychedelic ( maybe mescaline?) while writing the parts from The Chief's point of view to give to the reader a more deeply expressive experience of his style of thinking, and the haze of the meds, and the basis of The Chief's values of Life. While in the "hospital" The Chief was being given large amounts of psycho-active drugs daily. He might have had some ceremonial use of psychedelics before his time in the "hospital" also. This is an "iceberg" type of story. You only visually see about 10% of the story. The other 90% is hidden from view under the water-line, but still has an impact on your sub-conscious.
Good observations. To me, it's all about masculinity. The patients have all been emasculated by their mothers, the system, whatever. The Big Nurse continues to do the same, not realizing she is doing it...she's one of those people who thinks her "professionalism" is real, and that it gives her the power to heal.....but Mc Murphy is very comfortable with his masculinity, and is a natural leader of men....all the guys love his camaraderie. McMurphy dies in the end, but because of his courage, the Chief is set free, and discovers his own masculinity....running off into the woods in the end.....so powerfully and such a healing film....

Cuckoo's Nest is one of my favorite movies of all time, and Jack Nicholson is one of the greatest actors of all time, but boy does he ramble. But at least he's rambling about interesting shit =)
Ken Kesy after leaving college was asked by a friend to take his place on a medical trial, he agreed, but of course the medical trial was just a front to aid recruitment, it was actually a CIA black op to investigate the effects of LSD on people, scary shit.
Having been put in one of those places at age 15 in 1971 for drug abuse where I spent 3 years, I could have showed him how to escape. I was quite good at it. His escape in the movie was the tree-to-the-wall "hiding in plain sight" version which works if the security is relaxed and you get lucky. Bolting out the only unlocked door in the place across the grounds in the dead of winter and over the 12 foot ivy wall before they know what the fuck is going on is good too, unless you're 15 and the police pick up the chase after you're out. In that case you better have an apartment in town lined up to hide until the heat dies down and you can head down to the train station, or, the Greyhound > Woodshole, Mass > Nantucket Island.
Geez. I would've listened regardless of his time running over. I'd take a whole show of Jack. There's a movie in just the coming together of the picture. Jack is still feeling the moments when the characters were coming together. He can't keep from smiling. Such young actors at the time that were working there craft. I think I'll see it now.
I miss seeing him on film, such a brilliant actor, an inspiration and testament to what talent, training and work ethic can bring about. Love me some Jack Nicholson...oh and a nice man, met him once.
If I ever had a chance to have an actor for dinner......well that one will be easier choice. Jack Nicholson, I can ever imagine how entertainment he can always be. The Oscar goes to you because you are one of kind.
Jim Breuer was getting out of an elevator at SNL when Nicholson was getting in. It was about 2 in the morning. Nicholson looks at Breuer and goes "You LOOK how I FEEL." and smiled.
That would have been fantastic being there. One thing I have noticed, after reading the book "Hollywood Hellraisers" and reading/seeing interviews from Jack - he has such an unmitigated adoration for the craft of filmmaking. Just listening to him reminisce about Louise Fletcher, Milos, even the young woman who had the bit part of the girl on the boat - he just loves actors and acting and making whatever film he's in better.
Great Actor, such incredible man. Aside this film,my favorite Two, is China Town, and Witches off East Wood...Meet this actor WIP at Warner's for one off his other films. Never sat in on screening, sat outside with us. We left him in peace, no fuss. Before he took off gave us an untire box off Champagne....!! Amazing Jack Nickolson!!!.🇺🇲🇩🇰😎📬
Nah was really over the top which diminishes the film but having said that The Shinning is massively overrated anyway so may as well continue it into the performances.
One of the many things I like about Jack Nicholson is that no matter how old he gets he's still so full of energy when he's in front of the camera. 50 years of career and he's still nothing less than a great actor.
Jack Nicholson is probably the best actor since Spencer Tracy and that is pretty good. Hats off to Mr. Nicholson & Mr. Tracy, the best in American acting.
His memory is probably fine,he's just old and wants to rest after like 50 years of work. Shoutouts to him for pretty much ending his career like this and not becoming a "comedy" movie buffon like De Niro.
Jack gave us his best years. He's wise to not foolishly attempt to stay in the limelight long after the party is over. So many have made this mistake. We will always have his movies.
This film had such a profound impact on one of my best friends and I at the time. We both still can't say enough good things about it. A lot of peeps on here mention the book which is also quite a good read. Found it similar in a way to American Psycho (also a good film). In Cuckoo's Nest Kesey writes through the eyes of the Indian character who hasn't had the most stellar education and so it takes a little while to get in to it I found. In American Psycho Ellis' protagonist goes off into very long rants about Whitney Houston, Huey Lewis et al. This also in a similar kind of way took a bit of getting to grips with. Both good books though and a joy to be able to compare them with the films.
it's pretty obvious jack is one the best actors who ever came around. What's even more staggering is he's pretty old here, and it's 2023, and he's still around.
You don't get to hear Jack speak as Jack very often, so this is pretty cool. He seems kind of nervous here, which is kind of funny because he always plays badass characters with no fear.
There will never be another Jack Nicholson. One of the most interesting people on the planet. Kind and dangerous at the same time. You always get Jack. The only movie where he didn't play himself was 'About Schmidt' 2002. It was an interesting movie, but I had to wait most of the movie until "Jack" came out in the bathroom scene. That was worth the wait.
I been mesmerized by this man since 1975 I was 5 the shining first Jack movie he looked and acted like my father I named by son jack I love this man hes retired now that's ok he bought Marlon Brando's house next door for peace n quiet the stories he tells proves he took care his buddies kept his word honorable man just like my dad was.. when jack goes its gonna be like my dad died all over again much respect love his back history too if you dont know it you might want to dig for that!! One glimpse he never knew who his father is
Ann Bancroft! I like to imagine other people in certain parts, but I never thought about Ann Bancroft as Nurse Ratched. I can just imagine her in that role. Wow! That being said, Louise Fletcher was perfect for the part.
One line I remember from the book, during the basketball game (Martini is the Danny DeVito character): "...and Martini kept passing the ball to people only he could see."
My high school english teacher told the class that he was going to try out as an extra for this film. They didn't use extras though. Whenever I drive by the State Hospital I think of this movie. Sort of cool having it filmed here in Salem, Oregon.

Cuckoo's Nest is one of my favorite movies of all time, and Jack Nicholson is one of the greatest actors of all time, but boy does he ramble. But at least he's rambling about interesting shit =)
Wrong. Dishonored the book. Wasted Jacks talent. If they did it right he would have been awesome.
if you want to hear a wonderful ramble from nicholson, find his intro to bob dylan’s award.. riveting
Ramblin' Jack can say more 15 seconds than most mortals can absorb in a lifetime.
He had the “it” factor like few others in history. Charm and charisma coming out of his ears!! And his crazy hair.
That guy is a total one of a kind character. So cool.
i hate reading, but i read one flew over the cuckoos nest by ken kesy for an english assignment. The movie is amazing, but the book is orgasmic.
Ken Kesy after leaving college was asked by a friend to take his place on a medical trial, he agreed, but of course the medical trial was just a front to aid recruitment, it was actually a CIA black op to investigate the effects of LSD on people, scary shit.

@@abderrahimabderrahim6659????????
@@kevinbaird7277 As it turns out he was dosed with lsd every day for 11 years. Well in that case, he looks terrific!!
Kesey hated the movie.
It's one of the greatest if not the greatest movie ever, in more ways than one.
If I ever had a chance to have an actor for dinner......well that one will be easier choice.
Jack Nicholson, I can ever imagine how entertainment he can always be.
The Oscar goes to you because you are one of kind.
My favourite Jack character .... Mr. Udall .... still cracks me up.
Jack Nicolson - the hombre everyone want to be a friend with.
Si
His performance in The Shining was unfathomable too.
"A temporary loss of muscular coordination!!"
@Biruk Tebase lol
"And it was THREE Goddamn YEARS ago!!!!"
And in batman he has too many good movies man
Nah was really over the top which diminishes the film but having said that The Shinning is massively overrated anyway so may as well continue it into the performances.
That unmistakeable voice!
Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito became friends before they became famous.
So...?
Who cares! They were probably more than friends, probably queer for each other!
I can definitely picture Jack liking both men and women.
What strange comment thread haha
I love both of theese actors, why the hate ?
No, It was Michael Douglas who was friends with DeVito long before the film.
One of the many things I like about Jack Nicholson is that no matter how old he gets he's still so full of energy when he's in front of the camera.
50 years of career and he's still nothing less than a great actor.
Jack Nicholson is probably the best actor since Spencer Tracy and
that is pretty good. Hats off to Mr. Nicholson & Mr. Tracy, the best
in American acting.
Did Jack retire? I heard we was having trouble remembering lines these days.
He is going to be so missed when he's gone man.
Hello! I'm Google. Get to know me!
Amazing film and ending cheering through the tears .
What a film
Thanks for your love and support, I really do appreciate. 💙💙💙
The GREATEST actor of his generation. What else can you say........NOTHING
R.P. McMurphy is a role Nicholson was destined to portray.
Great to hear some Jack background.
Thanks to all involved with this movie.
I personally loved it very much.
Jack is The Man!!! he is simply the finest actor ever, his role in Cukoo's Nest remains superb and one of the finest performances ever in films.
What a beauty, and I know it was a long time ago but I am in awe of his vitality.
Definitely played a great role. Jack one of the most versatile actors around.
it's pretty obvious jack is one the best actors who ever came around. What's even more staggering is he's pretty old here, and it's 2023, and he's still around.
There’s a razor edginess to Jack, luv him!! One of the last great ones still here!! ❤️❤️❤️
😎😎😎😁😁
Absolutely brilliant film, new upcoming stars, great performances all round and took over the Oscars!!
You don't get to hear Jack speak as Jack very often, so this is pretty cool. He seems kind of nervous here, which is kind of funny because he always plays badass characters with no fear.
Talk about a GEM !! So glad I found this by accident !
jack is the coolest guy in the universe
Don't know about that... but he's odds on favorite to be the hippest.
I could listen to Jack all day and all night. What a great actor.
I think the casting on that film was perfect
jacks the man :)
That was worth the wait.
his performances in the fortune and cuccoos nest both 1975 hard to believe it the same actor amazing
One glimpse he never knew who his father is
Take out a loan and buy some punctuation! 🤣🤣🤣
Ann Bancroft! I like to imagine other people in certain parts, but I never thought about Ann Bancroft as Nurse Ratched. I can just imagine her in that role. Wow! That being said, Louise Fletcher was perfect for the part.
My absolute favorite Jack Nicholson film.
My God, I'm so sad 'couse I'm never gonna meet this guy!
One line I remember from the book, during the basketball game (Martini is the Danny DeVito character): "...and Martini kept passing the ball to people only he could see."
Jack was so high during this thing...he`s the best
The Best ACTOR ever.
His all roles are masterpieces.
Sense od humor outstanding!
Love from Poland
6:27 “Have I been three minutes?” Thank God for Jack!
My high school english teacher told the class that he was going to try out as an extra for this film. They didn't use extras though. Whenever I drive by the State Hospital I think of this movie. Sort of cool having it filmed here in Salem, Oregon.
Fun Fact: Both Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito grew up in Neptune, New Jersey.
I just love the way he talks... That iconic jack Nicholson style 😎
amazing actor one of the best ever
3 minutes? I could listen to this guy for 3 weeks
Jack never fails to captivate.
Love him so much. Amazing movie.
