  • Well, that didn't go as planned. Our cherry little 1966 Chevrolet Nova project seemed too good to be true...AND IT WAS. In this video, we address a misaligned door, and then dig into the bondo in the passenger side quarter panel. The body filler is quite thick, and it covered up a sketchy repair on the rear portion of the quarter panel. That repair is a piece of sheet metal that is pop riveted (not welded) over a big rusty hole. Time to order a patch panel, and some supplies, but I wanted to give you an update on this project.
    In case you missed it, here is the introduction to this 1966 Nova project: • 1966 Chevrolet Nova Pr...

    Most classics that have major rust on the right side of the body were driven in snowy salty conditions . The salt tends to accumulate on the right side of a lane.I live in Canada so few original cars and trucks here ..Great stuff

    I have done a fair bit of auto body repair and this is not uncommon on classic cars I found. Just takes that one guy who wants a quick fix and is not shy to use a gallon of Bondo! A patch panel will fix that up, looks pretty solid in behind.

    The cars from the 60s and 70s were horrible from the factory when it comes to panel alignment. A good body man will have it straighter than when it left the factory!

    That technique was taught in Body and Fender schools in the 60s and 70s, it was meant to be a quick fix, far as the Bondo goes they came out of the factory with Bondo and a lot of people don't understand that . that car has a lot of potential keep up the good work do it right stay safe

      @HotRodHoarder  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes sir, this type of repair is extremely common for a car that was painted in the '70s or '80s. Mig welders were not common, so people pop riveted panels in and mudded right over the top of them. Now days, I guess we have a little higher standards, since we have so many more tools to work with. We'll get it straightened up and looking good soon.

This shitty repair actually likely saved this car from the scrapper to be useful for long enough for its value to climb again. In a strange way that lame repair may have saved that cars life.

    • @HotRodHoarder

      @watsis buttndo you're right! Normally, a car that was in an accident and that had a rusty quarter panel would've been scrapped. Especially a 6 cylinder car like this one. The pop rivet patch and cheap paint job kept it alive. And now, we'll put a real panel in it and keep it alive even longer.
