I've only watched up to season 2 episode 8... I feel that to be able to love Peter, Catherine couldn't really love anything or anyone else, because Peter could destroy those other people or things without a thought. Only after she removed Peter's power to destroy those other people or things, and if Peter loves the same thing as her (like Paul), then Catherine can find it easier to fall for Peter. After all, Peter has managed to make the audience fall for him. Nicholas Hoult is one of the most critical component of the Great. If Peter is killed on screen, not sure if Catherine can carry the show by herself.
i always find these edits so insane yet entertaining. if you could take the most wild and camp show and cut all the romantic scenes and put them together to sad music then it somehow changes the whole way you see the show. it’s almost like you forget that she’s tried to kill him multiple times and he slept with her mom and caused her death.

This is true but also it explores the complex nature of feelings and relationships. It is absolutely a toxic relationship and we all know how this one ends but still is interesting how they portrait in the show because in those moments where they show even the slightest affection of the other it’s natural we find ourselves enjoying the scenes and only to be reminded in the same episode of how disfuncional they are and how there is not a chance of a happy ending for this couple.
The hair and makeup they did for her when Peter imagined her sitting across from her, eating a human heart, was nothing short of STUNNING. Could watch her all day. Nicholas Hault is incredibly handsome too, imo.
She is quite beautiful but, also sweet and adorable ( as well seen in the Malifecent films). I am so impressed by her portrayal of this formidable woman and I will forever more associate Catherine the Great to Elle
I seriously can’t wait for season 3. I love them together so much. Sometimes the people we love is not easy, it doesn’t connect right away, it doesn’t make sense but it somehow ignites a fire so big it can’t be killed or die. A great love is started when we least expect it. Sadly those are the ones that sometimes don’t last.

Peter was really cruel to Catherine in the beginning and in many times through the serie (What is unforgivable indeed) but the portray of Catherine as a strong women made me feel so relieved (she was too humiliated but she stayed strong and conquered respect with intelligence and authority) I'm so tired of the bullshit portray of women as -submissive idiotic- in dramas that watch her being strong was a big relief. This serie is so bizarre that even not forgiving Peter, you ends sympathizing with him, bc he put some efforts to change and be a good father. I shipp them together, Catherine was a cure to his crazy behavior, she understood him and helped him to recognize his horrendous behavior. Both made mistakes but even with theirs strangeness they complete each other. What made me angry many times was the shitty friends of Peter who tried everytime to manipulate him (when he was trying to change) to take advantage in some aspects. Well, this kind of "change" aspect for someone only happens in dramas bc in reality is another history, but see him putting some effort for her was really beautiful
i also enjoyed the unforgiving and cruel nature of Catherine, which are qualities that aren’t often assigned to female characters. yes, she was strong and a good leader, but she was also flawed, both in character and in leadership. with Peter.. there’s a tendency in him to always sabotage his own happiness. change is hard when you’ve been pampered your whole life. patriarchal core values are hard to transform since they serve men and they are the dominant values in the word. of course, this is fiction and things progress differently. i’m not sure if i would say i ship these two together, but there was a love story somewhere in there and i guess this video is just me squinting to see it.

Peter was too alienated to his reality, people always pampered him and his parents (except for his aunt) never put some limit in his behavior, maybe with the mentality that it was a behavior of a future leader. It was a really difficult process to him, recognize his bad behavior. Catherine did a great job in this aspect and she learned many things too, mainly with the position of a leader. Shipp is a hard way indeed to define my feelings towards them but they seems strangely well together.

I need season 3. I've rewatched season 1+2 too many times. Best Dramedy around. This video does a really good job showing the characters growth from season 1 to season 2 and the changes in their relationship dynamic. The show is so complex and human and when you show such a strong contrast, from peter saying "I like to eat breakfast alone" then "She should be here for breakfast", it's impactful.

i was honestly thinking the same thing. i loved the moment where, after Catherine made that speech about flawed love & sounded like she was ready to forgive Peter, she goes to kiss Peter and they both know she is going to kill him regardless. i don’t know what’s next for them now. their love is gonna have to transform.
What I'm most excited about is Peter, finding out that he could also not be the father because, remember, the season 1 Catherine tried to prevent getting pregnant with his child.

Just finished binge watching the series today, your video does a fantastic job in spotting and reconneting in a big delicate moving emotional puzzle all the little moments these two shared, wonderful editing and wonderful sum up of a really complex and fascinating relationship!
Personally I believe that they always stuck together, the only thing that stopped Peter from giving her the great love Catherine dreamed of was because he was living in a false reality. The reason being was his childhood was so harsh that when he got the opportunity for people to love him he enforced it and could never enforce it upon Cathrine so this slowly forced him into reality. All of this made them truly stick together when it all became real. There was always love in this beautiful story but it was never meant to always be apparent. That’s is what makes this story so intense and this edit sums that all up! Great job
yeah, i agree with how Catherine made Peter experience “real” love, which was something he wasn’t accustomed to since he always received “love” by force or pity. there is definitely love in this story but it is too complex for it to easily be a “love story.” if that makes sense. i’m glad you enjoyed the video!
i think you’ll get that same feeling from Catherine towards the end of season 2! i feel like Peter has been professing his love for the whole series but his speech when Voltaire was there gives me a similar feel to Darcy’s confession. “i look at you on your 20th birthday..” it’s just such a stark comparison to his values and beliefs and feelings at the start of the show.

honestly, when Peter said to his friends that he actually had a plan to take back the throne in the beginning of season 2, i was a little excited just because it would be fun to see him actually trying. and more drama, you know. lol. but i do like the idea of such a plot twist.
This is exactly what I thought was gonna happen at the end of the season, minus the pretending. I thought he was gonna just use the fact that he loved her as manipulation to get revenge.
although i personally think that would’ve been more interesting, i think they wanted to stick with the historical material. because, even though the show is loosely based on history, they’ve already created a completely different narrative of Peter and Catherine.

I think the show made him a tad bit too soft in the second season. He could have been a bit greyer. I feel like his cruelty and wickedness made him more interesting to watch in the first season. But I guess the moral of the story is that love can change you for the better...even though I do not really believe that myself, I suppose it works for the plot 🤔
agreed! i said this in another comment but at one point during season 2, i thought he was going to play Catherine and secretly work for the throne. i feel like that sort of dynamic would’ve made things more interesting but i do like his kinder side as well. also, seeing how things turned out, i’m not sure i believe that Peter was actually “changed” by the power of love. did he really change? would he have done those things if he had in fact changed? i don’t know. i feel like he’s met with a foreign feeling and he doesn’t really know how to work around it. if there’s any change, he is surely subconsciously fighting against it lol. perhaps because it could make him softer and kinder.

Plot twist : Peter pretended to love her the entire season 2 just to get his revenge WHAT IF??
honestly, when Peter said to his friends that he actually had a plan to take back the throne in the beginning of season 2, i was a little excited just because it would be fun to see him actually trying. and more drama, you know. lol. but i do like the idea of such a plot twist.
This is exactly what I thought was gonna happen at the end of the season, minus the pretending. I thought he was gonna just use the fact that he loved her as manipulation to get revenge.
although i personally think that would’ve been more interesting, i think they wanted to stick with the historical material. because, even though the show is loosely based on history, they’ve already created a completely different narrative of Peter and Catherine.

I think the show made him a tad bit too soft in the second season. He could have been a bit greyer. I feel like his cruelty and wickedness made him more interesting to watch in the first season. But I guess the moral of the story is that love can change you for the better...even though I do not really believe that myself, I suppose it works for the plot 🤔
agreed! i said this in another comment but at one point during season 2, i thought he was going to play Catherine and secretly work for the throne. i feel like that sort of dynamic would’ve made things more interesting but i do like his kinder side as well.
also, seeing how things turned out, i’m not sure i believe that Peter was actually “changed” by the power of love. did he really change? would he have done those things if he had in fact changed? i don’t know. i feel like he’s met with a foreign feeling and he doesn’t really know how to work around it. if there’s any change, he is surely subconsciously fighting against it lol. perhaps because it could make him softer and kinder.
@@HeviWillNot I agree with your reluctance in believing that he can actually change. But regardless, I feel like the dynamic between the two can benefit from a bit of toxicity! I know it sounds horrible saying it but you know what I mean, haha. I feel like in the end scene, we could clearly see how Catherine is not just a naive woman in love and I honestly loved that for her! But like you said, his inner conflict might shine through in the next season and I might be positively surprised.
