You watch a show like this, you've learned the tricks, you've learned a better way, if you still don't do it, you have nobody to blame but yourself.       I'm skinny, have been so all my life, and I'm educated enough to understand why, and, to appreciate my weight, not even so much for the classic health reasons, but because of mobility, and foremost, for the mental benefits exercise proivides (which you have to be physically able to just doing). How is your sports clothing industry doing? Last week I went to as rsident giant here, and XS is too large for me NOW - I'm approaching 52, and my weight is about were it was 30 years ago. What do you think how come? What's the message people take away from buying clothes there? And, qui bono?? Sickening, seriously, and literally.

      @@Strange9952 Agreed. When I see morbidly obese children, I judge the shit out of their parents. I instantly assume that parents that let their kids get fat are bad people.
      They are neglecting the physical health of their child and stealing stealing their childhood away. They're setting their kids up for a bunch of bullying and a lifetime physical and mental difficulties.

      Insulin-stimulating carbs are addictive and increase the frequency of feeling hunger. Either directly or as flavoring. Throw in some soda with that macaroni or pasta and that is the foundation of the obesity recipe. Fat becomes an issue when combined with the carb foundation.
      Documentaries like these are two-faced, showing how lacking medical science is in really getting people to fix the issue. Stimulation of the release insulin inhibits lipolysis. That is the fundamental rule of nature ignored and obfuscated.
      The population would see a boost first by going into some form of keto, even dirty keto.

      @@dsgorian2285 Exercise is really necessary for maintaining health. It will keep you healthy into old age. Boosts metabolism. It doesn't even have to be a lot of exercise, being active is definitely worth it.

      ​ DS Gorian fasting only works if your all ready thin(and/or have type 1 Diabetes that is a permanent type of life style that is required) you risk having your Metabolism
      come to a halt if you do so...I had did a 4month fasting I gained the weight right back I went from 220 to 175 then back to 215 in 5 months time.. so i wasted about 9 months for nothing .
      the point is eating right and avoiding the items with "added sugar" (and fake sweeteners ) that is pretty much everything THAT is not in vegetable / fruit section, fruit sugar is 100% legit the fruit contains fiber which bannishes the sugar from being absorbed by the body quickly like over a longer a period of time.. and it's mostly discarded when you poop.
      the obesity issue is made by the stores they Sell/Lease shelf space to the junk food manufactures there is *no profit in vegetable / fruit section*.. that is how the lure you in, The idea your coming in for fruit & vegetables at a great price and you leave with a cart full of junk foods.. that is why they force you to enter the fruit & vegetables section first EVERY single store forces you to enter the fruit & vegetables section first it's by design. to get MEGA sized profits... while you leave with garbage that is highly profitable..
      IF you hit the vegetable / fruit section as you exit you bet you would be buying more vegetable / fruits instead of highly profitable junk foods mislabeled as being "healthy" .. also many of those junk foods would end up back on the shelf...as you would be thinking twice about wasting all that money on it
      just like the gas station has the chips right as you enter it's the first thing you see I almost bought a package and a couple hours later i was thinking about why i did not buy that bag of chips ... It turns out I rather keep my $1.60 :) instead.. I switched to this sugar free diet(No junk food of anykind) i'm losing about 4.6 pounds per week i started at 218.5 pounds i'm at 199.5 pounds. i have been walking about 4 miles everyday (28 miles a week ) and 112 miles a month.. once a year passes it's going to be 1,344 miles :O that is the same amount of walking from Mexico to Canada.( on the west coast) I slowly migrated over from junk food to healthy foods this worked really well.. I donated the rest of the junk food to a local food bank.. they were surprised as no one normally donates junk foods.. Junk food is expensive....

    This should be mandatory to watch in schools for Health class. You cannot run away from the Cognitive Dissonance with seeing people and them living with their choices. That elderly couple made me real sad, but in the same time, it opened the door for me to be inspired to be healthy so I don't end up there.

      @@jamesgentry13 They're not, that's just an excuse. Buying some eggs and veggies for a healthy scramble will cost maybe $5 for several meals vs. $5 for a breakfast from McD's. That's just one example, but there are many. Yes it costs more up front to buy groceries, but averaging it out over how many meals you get out of it, it is almost always cheaper than buying convenience foods. People are just too lazy to learn to cook and can't do math.
      And anyway, weight loss isn't about what you eat, it's about how much of it you eat. You can lose weight eating fast food so long as you expend more calories than you take in.

    Most people that claim to "fail" when it comes to diets, is likely due to them looking at it as a temporary change. When you're talking about making changes to your eating habits, you have to approach it as a full on lifestyle change and not just a temporary diet. I started my weight loss journey at 275 about 2 months ago and I'm currently down to 250. There's nothing complex about what I'm doing. Calories in vs calories out, macros are a good combo of healthy fats, complex carbs and protein. I also use my Peloton 4-5 times a week. I know I still have a ways to go to a healthy weight, but treating this as a lifestyle change has been the difference for me.

      The reason most fail is because long term/chronic calorie restriction eventually makes your calories out plummet, which will make you feel like shit until you eat

      Just interminent fasting + keto diet. Its the only way :) the old restriction of calories diets and the +5 meals a day cause obesity, along with the procesed food.

      Even the word "diet" sabotages them. Your diet is what you regularly eat, it's not inherently related to weight loss and being restrictive. People need to change their diet to change their weight and health and stop thinking that it's only about losing weight.

    77% of obese children become obese adults. 93% of healthy weight children become healthy weight adults. Okay - basically we stay the same but where is the study and follow-up on the 23% of obese children that DID NOT become obese adults? THOSE are the people you want to follow; they hold one, if not more, of the answer(s).

      Obese children develop larger more condensed fat cells from an early age making them predisposed to gaining weight the rest of their lives. Those that end up at a healthy weight into adulthood are living a healthy lifestyle and you better believe showing great self discipline and intellect.

    I lost weight no so much by "reducing volume" because hungry people wont stick to that. Rather, substitution from higher calorie ingredients to lower, but similar volume. Also, NEVER drink soda or fruit juice!!!

      There are a lot of sodas with 0 calories where you live I would guess? So soda is not bad if you choose the correct one. About one-third of the soda market here have no 0 calories.

      Do you know what a chemical is? Everything you have ever consumed has a lot of chemicals in it. Even if you only drink water and only eat apples and carrots you have grown yourself.
      What has been tested and proven over and over again, is that It's all about the amount of energy(calories).
      When you put a big group of 100 + obese people on very different diets, but the same amount of calories guess what happens. They lose the exact same amount of weight given enough time.
      And although I'm just a person, I should be super fat, since Diet Pepsi(1kcal per 100ml) is my only "addiction". And it has been for 5 years. But the thing is if you consume the number of calories that I do, you will not get fat.

      @@ujmm depends on the person but most of the time 0 calorie fizzy drinks are not your friend. The sweeteners in the drink makes your mouth and brain think you're having sugar which is what makes it feel good right? All the fun but none of the calories, except your body gets way too convinced it's getting sugar and prepares itself by raising insulin. More insulin makes you feel ravenous and makes you eat more later. And overtime the exposure to 0 calorie fizzy drinks make you less sensitive to insulin, which is setting you up for diabetes so just try to drink less of it in general, your teeth will thank you.
      I didn't realise how much it triggers your insulin until I break my long fasts with pepsi max and feel that sugar high that makes me rest less until I stuck my mouth. The appetite I felt after having pepsi max was 10 times as strong as my worst hunger pang while fasting.
      Even when I'm eating normally, sometimes (not always) it makes me want to over eat so I wouldn't recommend it if you're starting on your weightloss journey

    I lost 92 pounds and got rid of high blood pressure and diabetes two. If I could do that in two years (from 63 to 65) and keep it off at 66, ANYONE CAN DO IT. It is a matter of self-discipline, changing the food types one craves, and walking daily. Simply WALKING. Don't lie to yourself. If you want to lose weight and be healthy, you must CHOOSE IT and then take the struggle (it is always a struggle!) DAY BY DAY BY DAY. Life is better when onen is healthy, physically fit and mentally alert. FAT IS DEATH.

    I understand that people feel like it's too hard to change your eating habits and move more to lose weight... but almost EVERYTHING in life takes hard work! I know what it feels like to be obese: I weighed 245lbs. and suffered daily with the stigma and fatigue and frustration and self disgust. However, I made a conscious decision to change... it wasn't easy, but it was worth all the sweat and tears. I lost 133lbs. and have maintained that weight loss for 12 years. Nothing is impossible... surely losing weight isn't either.

      It's more complicated than that though.
      There's eating disorders, which require more than just hard work to conquer. They require a full psychological treatment and intervention over a long period of time.
      There's poverty which limits the meals people can afford to fast food.
      There's genetics and physical disorders.
      Hard work doesn't cut it for a lot of people.

    I moved to the US for a few years and gained 50 pounds. The portions were enormous so I took half home for the next day. One meal, I had fish, rice pilaf and broccoli. Healthy, right? The next day I took it out of the fridge and it had about 1/4 cup of butter solidified on it. I moved back to Canada and lost 15 pounds in the first 6 months back, just eating normally. This told me that will power is not enough. The food industry needs to get on board and be part of the solution.

      @@odapunkt 25% of Norwegian men and 20% of Norwegian women are obese. That is one out of four and one out of five. Hardly a rarity. In children, there is definitely lower obesity in Norway than children in the United States. Just remember that Norway is a nation of merely just over 5 million people mostly living in rural country side areas. They are not traveling major roads lined with dozens and dozens of fast food restaurants and eating establishments all over the place as in the US. But if there were, they would definitely be eating there and getting even fatter. The traffic at my new local Norwegian McDonald's proves that by how busy it has become. Also a meal for four people at a Norwegian McDonalds, and all junk foods, is vastly more expensive than a similar meal in the United States where all junk food is very inexpensive so there is also that driver behind eating out for meals. Norwegians also don't typically go out to a restaurant or eatery everyday for their lunch time as they do in the US and portions in Norway are also much smaller in restaurants.

      i live in the US,,, the food industry' is the problem. they do whatever they can,,, to give you a New and Yummy dish you'll come back for. (and what they do is use more butter,, it's a restaurant, nobody is going to ask for nutritional content. ) so yep, the Portions are Ridiculous,,,, i really hate crap food. I don't miss restaurants at all,,, i cook fresh,,, i want t know what im eating,,, and you can learn to cook and get better at it. Im italian,,yeah,, we Do eat,, but its about quality fresh ingredients. im not 'thin',,, i never will be,, but Healthy,,, Yes,,, doing well in my 60's,, grow any food and see what ur missing,,, Real Ingredients have FLAVOR.

    I am a health professional and am dismayed by the state of our nations health. I find it shocking that we are taking such poor care of our children and that we have an abundance of food and yet our poorest citizens cannot reach it or afford healthy choices. I am learning that the poorest quality of food including meat that cannot be sold to consumers is processed and fed to our children in school lunch programs. What is the matter with us? Are our mega corporations and government so greedy or stupid that we are willing to shorten our kids lives to make an extra buck???

      +Orrene Smith Those mega corporations are giving people what they want. Poor people have access to healthy fruits, grains and vegetables. They are just too lazy, fat and stupid to go to the grocery store and buy them. Most welfare recipients would rather stuff a big mac into kids face instead of getting off of their fat welfare stealing asses and prepare them a healthy meal. Poor people also hate fruits and vegetables unless they are made into a desert.

      You have forgotten the working poor where both parents work, one of them at 2 jobs at low pay, may ride the bus, don't have access to large grocery stores and may have to buy at corner stores at inflated prices and cannot afford fresh food which does cost a lot more than a Happy Meal.

It's a depression, a state of mind, constantly seeing reminders as to why you will and should never succeed, and of course poverty breeds crime! If people are feeling hopeless and can't have the same things, if they're already looked down upon and almost criminalized under the law and society, how else do you move forward? How else do you get money? Obesity comes into it, not just because of access to healthy food and costs, but also for the same reason that drugs and alcoholism do; junk food, like heroin, offers an escape from this depressing way of living. The countries with the lowest poverty and the richest countries overall in the world are the SOCIALIST Nordic States (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland) who are welfare states. Don't blame the poor, blame the system.

    I can't understand all the "I've tried it all, nothing works" bullshit. I used to weigh 108 kg (240 lbs). I've lost 26 kilograms (57 lbs) so far just by eating 1800 calories a day and exercising at least 5 times a week, 30-45 minutes a day. And if you don't want to exercise, just WALK and be active troughout the day, so you burn more calories than you consume. There is no special diet, no magic pills. Please, just get off your butt and start now, don't wait until it's too late.

      wendus93 When people say "I lost X amount of weight" its a vague statement. Thats why I asked what you lost. Did you hydrostatic weight yourself to get your readings?
      How did you come about 1800 kcal/day to lose fat? Five days a week you exceeded your energy expenditure and lost weight, hmm. (1 lb of fat has 3500 kcal) Wouldn't a lower kcal also lower your bmr?

    It's so easy for us who are healthy and fit to watch this and tell these people what to do, but it is not just what they LIKE to eat. It is what they were brought up eating, what they are continuing down through their families. Easy to tell them to exercise or to buy salad, but they need psychological re-training, too. Watching that woman's family chow down on all that garbage made me cringe, too, but they honestly do not know any better. That sounds patronizing. But they just don't.

      Yes, this is true. Even the ones who do know better just don't care or they care but do not have a strong enough will to follow through with changing their entire lifestyle. How we grow up shapes our mindsets. People who are taught to finish all the food on their plate and not let any go to waste continue to do that into their adulthood even when they have more than enough food to eat too.
      A lot of this whole fat issue is simply psychological. Other parts are genetic, but there are many parts of it that are psychological.
      Even the whole, "We are poor, so we can't afford healthy food" argument doesn't make sense. You can get a dozen donuts for the same cost as it would to get about 7 small red delicious apples. Now, apples, are full of sugar and stain your teeth, but they are certainly better for a human than any lump of fried dough unless that human were allergic to apples.

      True, but the doctors are a part of the problem telling them to eat less and exercise (more) - this will simply not work. They must reduce the sugar/carbs they are eating. One doctor told the newly diagnosed diabetic woman to eat whole wheat pasta and brown rice! Each time she does this her blood sugar will rise and insulin will be released that tells her body will store FAT. I hope that people watching this documentary don't buy in to the complete lack of science these doctors are dishing out.     Nothing resonated with me more than the elderly couple talking about gaining 3 lbs or so a year and you wake up 10 years later and 30 lbs heavier! I'm just a month postpartum with my second son and luckily I've lost the baby weight but now I need to focus on losing those extra pounds I gained since high school.

    Obesity is a serious issue. I was an obese kid and I know see the life I missed. Obesity prevented me from joining any sports teams and even making more friends. I didn't do anything about it and it is my fault.

      Don't forget to blame crappy school lunches, junk food and candy corporations, government allowing junk food to become cheaper, don't be too hard on your parents, as a kid more activity on your part yes could have been done. But you exercised in school, you weren't born with genetics that allowed you to eat anything, and most importantly don't be too hard on yourself as you needed some more encouragement and help, you had some personal hang-ups. I too have missed out on some things in life growing up obese and could have done more myself but I had mistreatment and an environment that wasn't more encouraging and definitely not the healthiest. I had early childhood abuse: sexual, emotional, physical, psychological and poor eating habits and food all around me growing up. My life wasn't absolutely terrible and I had a lot of good things. But if I could go back and do it again I would have had a vastly different life, but who decides what makes happiness? Buddhists believe true happiness can only be found within and not from external sources and there are people who by society's standards have it all but are still miserable and unhappy. But my children will never grow up overweight and never even near obese.

    I grew up relatively healthy, ate good food at home, played sports, etc. Before I went off to college I was 150 as a 5'4 female (my family holds weight really well so I didn't look fat at all). In the years I was in school I got up to 230. I was miserable, depressed, everything hurt - I felt trapped in my own body. At that point I said enough was enough and dedicated my entire senior year to losing the weight and getting back to the healthy habits. Since then I've lost all the weight and am back to my original weight, just in time for graduation. I feel amazing, and I will never let myself get to that low point again. Now, even eating bad food at a social event leaves me feeling like crap for days.
    There's a lot of people out there who just don't know what to do and grew up eating like shit. I thank goodness for the healthy habits I grew up with, because that's how I was able to overcome this situation. For someone without that background, they have to learn healthy habits from scratch, it's super tough. But as someone who was obese, I can tell you for certain that nobody is truly happy to be that big - they have just accepted it.

    My mom had to change her diet to lose weight for surgery and I decided to join her. We do a modified keto diet, avoid fast food, processed foods, sugar. We cook meals at home. In 5 months my mom has lost 30 plus pounds and I have lost 25. It was 5 months of retraining our bodies, ignoring cravings, cheating some times, but continue to keep going. Totally worth it.

      @@kitten_582 What is a balanced diet? Carbohydrates, sugars, fats and proteins are metabolized differently. A calorie of fat does not equal a calorie of sugar. Insulin is a fat storage hormone. Carbs and sugars are converted to triglycerides and stored in fat cells. The human body requires zero grams of exogenous sugar and carbs to sustain life. If you don't eat carbs and sugar your body burns fat. That is why the ketogenic/ carnovore diets work so well.

    My husband and I went plant based a few months ago and the weight is coming off slow and steady. The best part is our grocery bill is a quarter of what it was and we’re never hungry. We spend more time preplanning meals and cooking even when it’s easy to order out but it’s worth it, it’s worth every minute of it. Once you stop eating processed foods your body stops craving it. Your taste buds change and you crave healthy fresh foods. You have to embrace change and take small steps. First we cut out processed foods, then red meat, then poultry, then dairy. We started trying different vegetables, grains, nuts, etc. Start small and never give up!

      @Gormen Freeman I personally like the keto diet with a ton of veggies with fish or meat and protein and no carbs or sugars. I get most of my minerals and nutrition from green vegetables and the fats omega 3 and 6 to help me to stay full. I intermittent fast and I only eat twice a day from 5am to 12pm range and that's it. No snacking, nothing extra and I only have one meal on Tuesday and no meals on Friday. I am the healthiest I ever been in my entire life. I went from 287 to 259 in less than a month with a no sugar, less carb diet ...... But life is short and you only live once in your current form so I'll always recommend do what makes you happy and healthy! Keto makes me happy and healthy 😊

    Hopefully this will help someone out there... If you want to lose weight you need to accept and/or realize a few things:
    1) Diets don't work. Don't even start one. Every diet plan out there has one thing in common: A 100% failure rate.
    2) You must eat healthy. Fast food, gone. Sodas, gone. Processed food, gone.
    3) Eating healthy is not a diet plan, it is a lifestyle.
    4) You need to live a healthy lifestyle for the remainder of your life or you will fail
    5) Move around/exercise. Get at least 30-60 minutes a day of exercise. Once or twice a week, double it.
    6) Build muscle by doing some resistance training. You don't need to bulk up, just put on some muscle.

      @@MeleenGames I don't mean to discourage you, but that is not fat loss. It would take around a 30,000 calorie deficit in that week to lose that much, or 6,300 calories a day. For perspective, if you ate nothing at all over those 5 days you would have to cycle about 125 miles (roughly 8 hours) a day to burn off enough calories to reach that amount.
      What you have most likely lost is water weight. Almost everyone who starts a diet sees a 5-10 pound loss in the first week or two. This is simply due to the fact that the "diet" usually decreases carbs and salts so the body releases stored water. This is also why people get discouraged, you will only lose weight at this rate in the beginning and one slippage will bring it all back. Go out and eat some Chinese food or a pizza and you'll be 5 pounds heavier the next day, all due to new water retention.
      Again, this is not to discourage you but to bring things into reality. If you continue to exercise and eat healthy you will be successful. However, if your "diet" you speak of is something you can't maintain for the remainder of your life, you will fail the moment you quit. If it's a restrictive diet, you will fail/quit sooner than later.
      You probably hate me or are angry at me posting this.... but the problem is people don't realize these facts because all they get is encouragement instead of the cold hard facts about how to be successful. My goal here is to help you.

      Jeremy Jefferson dude I’m not American no offense if you are but I only put on weight because of certain medications and certain medications are helping me loose weight as well most people in my county live on a calorie deficit it’s not like I ever ate pizza every day or even once a week I’ve gone for years without eating Macdonalds when you are on antipsychotics your body stores every single bit of fat it can find as it stops your fat burning processes and you burn way less calories than you should Tracy marks on TH-cam does a video on it explaining the science behind it. I exercise 2 hours a day I also go for slimming treatments that burn the fat away such as fat freezing and radio frequency treatment that means if you exercise and diet while on those treatments you’ll loose fat way more easily than the average person you only loose cm first then the weight slowly declines but no one ever loose less than 1kg a week on those treatments If they eat well and exercise. I forgot to mention because it’s a lot of extra shit to mention. After 4 weeks of injections and fat freezing and radio frequency I lost a lot of cm everywhere but the weight has only started recently I had the opposite problem I was loosing fat but not weight in the first month I only lost 2kg of just fat but I into started dieting a week ago properly as I had bulimia so yes I know alll about how heavy food can make you if I ever saw food make the scale go up I would purge it immediately and am now on medication for it I can easily stick to a diet instead of binging on healthy foods like lettuce and potatoes as I did I can eat them normally I can’t go out with friends because they will always judge you for eating healthy No one really knew about my binges which is also probably why I was only loosing 500grams a week on my treatment it’s still not bad. I never had a problem with fast food or sugar or unhealthy carbs i can’t just stop eating healthy and eat foods I basically never eat now I didn’t put on weight from that like I said if you look up the effects of antipsychotics and weight gain they’ll explain how the body stores everything you eat and turns it into fats like it does after fasting which is why it doesn’t work. So I’m total I’ve lost 6kg in the last two months even if it was water weight I know I’m going to be loosing fat because I literally am burning it with injections and treatments. You can also notice the water weight when you go for a suna treatment you can sweat off up to 700grams that you just put back on after drinking or eating it’s just to help get toxins out your body. I also have a beautician who works with me so I’ve already lost a lot of the fat I’ve wanted to loose what your saying makes sense but I’m not discouraged because I have been loosing a ton of cm and burning fat so I weigh more than I actually look and probably still have water weight there is a diet called the fast 800 that works the best with it. I don’t do “cheat days” because I know how to cook nice healthy foods for way cheaper than any fast food we don’t have a “dolllar” menu a small macdonalds meal costs the same as a packet of mushrooms, broccoli and a few apples. The most expensive macdonalds meal is enough to feed yourself for an entire week it’s out counties policy on forgiven food cooperations they aren’t allowed to max the size here and it’s called sin tax you don’t pay taxes on healthy foods so it’s cheaper I don’t think western counties do that basically a simple chocolate is the equivalent to a packet of 5 bananas and apples. On the go two bananas is way more filling. Only the rich here have an obesity problem the rest of South Africa lives on vegetables and pap pap is extremely unhealthy though. It makes dieting way easier and it’s one of my counties good policies I suppose. Being healthy and staying that way is easy and more affordable fast food is an extreme luxury.

      Jeremy Jefferson never said I lost fat at a certain amount like I said when you go for fat burning it takes a while to loose weight I said I lost a certain amount of weight not fat in a few days 🤷🏼‍♀️ you can’t just take people’s words and put them in your own narrative and assume their unhealthy and stupid. I specifically said that you only burn 1kg a week from fat burning from that exercise and dieting. Never said it was a ton of fat that came off in a few days. You initially assumed I’m some idiot who doesn’t know what water Weight is and completely dismissed diets and said I was going to fail which is rude as fuck you should say it’s not going to be easy but it’s possible over a certain period of time with exercise.
      Ps. hey A diet doenst just mean less food it means you have to cut out what doenst work for you by going for a test with a doctor where it tells you what foods to eat and not eat it’s the bets way to get results over time I suppose you don’t know about it because some people struggle on foods they didn’t even know their body struggles to digest even if it’s healthy. I forgot the name for it but it’s apparently quite expensive as they test your body with thousands of different foods.

    that old couple with the man that lost his leg made me cry:( so sad how it could've been prevented with just a few lifestyle changes. We really need to show people how REAL and potentially FATAL their decisions can be... I think most people just tend to think oh it's fine it's just one meal, or oh i don't really feel like working out, but they don't realize that they are doing it ALL the time.

She was very well known for her cheerful and friendly attitude even in hard times! She unfortunately passed away in 2020, but I'm so glad that she's still able to spread positivity!

      @@aimanbryan1424 Sugar 100 percent does contribute to obesity lol. Carbs pack on the pounds. People were leaner before people started eating so much sugar and wheat (when it was a luxury). That's a fact. There's a reason why cutting sugar/carbs leads to rapid weight loss. You feel full and your insulin isn't going all over the place.

      Sometimes I cheat with sugar (edible cookie dough) and I can literally see the effects it has on my body. My fingers swell, my belly is bloated and I don’t have as much definition.

    The physician at the beginning looking to the government to help fix this problem-the government helped create this problem! The food pyramid with absolutely no basis in science. 10 to 12 breads or starches per day-you know that’s a number some lobbying group came up with.
    Love they interviewed a former officer of Quaker Oats and PepsiCo bemoaning the work force obesity rates. Think those companies you worked for had anything to do with this?

    I switched to eating whole food and healthy fat. Cut down on Carb. Eating bacon and all sort of delicious fatty cut of meat. Yeah, I use butter to cook everything.
    Losing weight turned out to be one of the easiest and most delicious experience I have ever had.

      I agree, but with the caveat that it’s something you have to train yourself to crave. I crave roasted veggies but that’s because I taught myself to enjoy them and limited junk food. When I ate junk food on a regular basis, I would crave that because my body thought that’s where my energy would come from. And I still crave ice cream every now and then.

    A friend brought some american foods to test and yeah, you can actually taste the grade of processing. The sweets were almost sharp with sweetness, the savory things didnt resemble anything fresh I know. Learning to live healthy is also a competence gained in childhood and even adolecense. Cooking and eating fresh produce is one big factor, the other is to stay in movement.

    Our food supply has been chemically engineered to be addictive. The food companies have been allowed to do this so people buy more of their products. Obesity is an addiction to food, not a willpower issue. We have come so far in the understanding of drug and alcohol dependence, so why can we not understand obesity?       Plant-based Recovery I agree that food can be an addiction. I believe that I have a food addiction. But it’s still a willpower issue. An alcoholic has to decide daily not to drink. I have to decide daily not to eat my trigger foods, processed food, sugary food. I’ve been fighting this addiction all my adult life. Along with length of exercise. And will continue to fight it until I’m in paradise.

    High fat,low carb has changed my life. Don't eat processed junk ,I eat while foods now. I did Carnivore as an elimination diet. When I started adding low other low carb foods back in you really can see what certain foods do to your body.
    I have lost so much and am being more active. Keeping my kids active is important as well and we enjoy doing things together. They are not on any diet other than "we have treats every once in awhile ,they are not an every meal everyday thing". Trying to establish a good foundation so they won't have to battle it will just come naturally.

    I totally agree with you on that one. Once I started severely cutting back on processed foods I noticed how cheap healthy food can be. Now don't expect to get rare nuts and fruits on a budget but it is totally doable.

    At 50:45, notice how she switches the super high protein fast food she's used to eating for what seems to be a mixed greens salad with a couple crackers and maybe an ounce of shredded cheese. Please make sure you are switching these high fat/high protein foods for options that are going to be satiating, rather than a small, simple salad (assuming this is intended to be a meal and not just a snack/side salad or something). You will not be able to replace a bucket of chicken with a 200-calorie salad.

    Reminds me of a co-worker I had almost 10 years ago: she was over 300 lbs and on her first day of work I felt genuinelly bad for her because she swore she didn't understand why she was so heavy, since she ate very healthy and was even a vegetarian. She blamed her genetics and her hormones. Since I worked in the same office as her I saw exactly how she spent her days: eating. She got a Big Mac everyday for lunch with large fries, large shake, etc. She was also always eating: either chips or gummi bears, donuts or some other crap. And she drank several cans of coca cola or energy drinks every day too. She quit shortly after and I never saw her again but a 2 people from the office saw her again after years in different occasions and she was even heavier.     It wasn't hard for me to lose 100 lbs. I lowered my diet to 1200 a day, and just moved a bit more. It took me about 6 months, but it's possible. And sure, for me to keep it off I have to read all nutritional information, but I want to live as long as possible. You can lose weight, it's just a matter if you actually want to. Trust me, losing weight and keeping it off is a live long commitment.

      @@younggun6006 actually shooting for a 1200 is pretty good if you're morbidly obese. Why? Because people in the weight range tend not to be mindful while eating, snaking, or counting calories properly. I once saw a study that followed people counting calories and most undercounted the first 3-6 months. So shooting a 1200 will probably end up being 1500-1800 at least when you start learning how to count, especially if you're not weighing your portions or cooking yourself.

      Doesn't help too much. You gain the habits of your parents and if they are overweight/obese then they are more likely to give that sort of diet to their kids. What is a teen going to do when they don't make money, they can't drive or just started driving, and haven't been taught how to cook? The only way they will shed weight is if they move out of their parents place, have a source of income, and attempt to learn how to cook on their own time. That is a feat to do when you have had about two decades of reinforcement.

    Legumes are a superfood: healthy, cheap, and have a long shelf life.
    Search the internet for recipes and make your own dishes. Forget all of the highly processed food that comes in colorful boxes with a barcode. If it’s recognizable as a basic food product ( one ingredient),
    you can eat it ( rule of thumb). Spices make all the difference for flavor.
    NO EXCUSES

    I am at almost the 20 minute point, and have not heard anyone utter the words "fast food," "commercial food" or "pre-packaged food." The pictures flashed across the screen show all of these, while the narrator uses words like "environment," "behavior" or "interaction with our environment." Everyone is so afraid of getting sued, that they have to water down their references to the point of meaninglessness.
    We have a food industry and a pharmaceutical industry that is in bed with each other. And back in 2008 when morbid obesity hit the fast lane, GMO's were as well. We have no idea what affect GMO's are having on us, and they can talk all they want about how GMO's are wonderful, but there must be an affect on us, and we will never know the collateral damage because no one's talking or doing studies. If they are, they are silenced with lawyers, I expect.
    Our food has turned into a form of recreational drugs. Refined substances such as sugar, salt, fats, oils, flavorings, flours, corn sweeteners and corn starch, spice and herb extracts, all serve to give us that "high" while we eat, and afterwards as well. That is why there is "comfort food."
    Industry does what it wants, and the government does not protect us from adulterating of our food supply. The medical establishment is a powerful engine that helps keep America flush with money for those who are investors and corporate owners. Blaming people for becoming obese is like blaming the homeowner for being broke because they pay too high a mortgage payment. Pressure to eat, and often an almost inescapable system of terrible food affects all of us. Even our recipes are rife with the worst stuff, and we are encouraged to make the simplest things with ingredients that we didn't use 40 or 50 years ago. Now we want every recipe to be a show stopper. We want everyone we feed to be awed by our culinary magic. Food has taken on surreal meaning, not just in America, but in many other countries that have an even higher incidence of obesity.
    The answer? Try to stay with the most natural form of food you can. At buffets, at home, eating out, find that baked potato on the menu and have it with sour cream on the side and no butter. Order a salad with dressing on the side. Have a piece of broiled fish or chicken, and skip the drink, but have water instead, or plain coffee or tea. Even the diet sodas make us eat more. Carry a small shaker of your own herbs and spices, and don't be embarrassed to use them to dress up your food.
    Our enemy is invisible. If we could see the sugar, see the fat, see all the chemicals designed to make us eat more, we could avoid those foods. But for the most part, they are unseen and therefore dangerous. Our food has gone stealth, and it is up to us to navigate smarter for our health, and help others stay to a whole foods plan without all the oils, sugars and refined flour.

      you realise "GMOs" aren't tangible things or a substance, right? it's literally gene modified food, that's it. you realise absolutely all fruits and vegetables we have today have been altered to be easier for us to consume and tastier. take seedless grapes for example, that is what GMO is. they have selected the genes from the grapes with less seeds until they got seedless ones. how is that hurting you? spoiler alert, it isn't! :D

    I was 105kg on my peak weight at 5'6" I have tried all diets and simply doesn't work but when I started researching and found out that the sugary , fatty and processed food makes us obese , I put all I have learned into practice, after 13 weeks of proper healthy eating habits and playing basketball and lifting weight I lost 30kg , my diabetes was gone , BP normal, sleep apnea was gone... then after awhile I started eating bread , sweets, processed foods again ,I piled up 10kgs in 2 months then started living health again and lost 4kgs in 3 weeks alone...THEREFORE its all down what we put in our mouth and lack of inactivity that makes us PIG.................

    So I was obese for several years. And I came from a family of people who became obese with age. I saw diabetes, hip replacements, etc. I knew the road I was headed down.
    I changed. It didn't happen overnight. In fact, it took me 4 years to lose 50 lbs. I have been up and down but overall have maintained a downward trend. I have now been a healthy weight for about 4 + years. I am by no means fit, but at a healthy, comfortable weight. And now I am aiming more to focus on reducing BODY FAT and not simply weight. I am building muscle.
    Many would classify me as skinny but I still have about 30% bf.
    I can tell you from experience, being obese changes your physiology. Health experts may chime in and disagree, but it DOES. When you cut calories, you lose muscle and energy, not fat. It takes a long time of being consistent for your body to start behaving properly.
    I understand how hard it is to stay consistent long enough to see even small changes. I am also here to tell you it is not a stop/start thing. Exercise and Healthy Eating must become your normal routine. It is a never-ending life-long process. It becomes your norm and feels like less of a chore over time and just becomes second nature. But it takes lots of time and climbing back on that wagon every time you fall off. It takes inner work. It takes distancing yourself from people who don't support you. It takes learning. It takes SELF LOVE. Without self love and self care, there will be no success in the long run.
    But it IS POSSIBLE, and doable...one tiny change at a time. You can do it.
    I will never fo back to the old me.

    My teacher told me to watch this because in lesson I told her I’m bored, I’m not overweight, most of my life I was underweight, right know I have a healthy weight, I’m European (German) so I weight myself in kilograms, I don’t know my exact weight but it’s about 45kg to 48kg -> 99 to 105 pounds, I am 5‘2 for my Europeans it’s 157cm. I am really proud of all of you, also even telling your story’s ❤️

    The problem with obese and overweight people is that they keep approaching a lifelong issue with temporary and quick solutions. Dieting doesn’t work, but if you make sustainable life changing diet modifications and you exercise regularly and consistently, you WILL see change. I have lost 180 pounds almost 4 years ago and I have kept it ALL off. I eat the same way I did to lose the weight and I permanently changed my eating and removed detrimental foods from my diet. I exercise regularly. It’s hard...but it’s not that hard. Being morbidly obese is harder trust me. I can NEVER go back to being morbidly obese again. I don’t eat sugar or processed foods.

      Yeah I know, red meat is actually about the most beneficially nutrient dense food a human being can possible consume. Like with anything else it's about controlling "how much" your body needs which can vary tremendously from individual to individual. Sugar is BY FAR more of an issue than red meat could ever be.

      Cutting back to fish and chicken will do nothing for them if they continue to eat processed foods (bread, pasta, desserts) and fail to add plant based, whole food nutrition to their bodies as replacement choices. The cure is not complicated and not costly compared to the disease. I hope there is a part 2 to this doc that addresses optimal food choices.

    I’ve lost 60 lbs so far (5’7 16 year old female 220 to 160) the only advice I would give is eat fruits, lean meats, oats, and veggies. Also daily strength training really helps. The more muscle you pack on the more you can eat, and that really helps me personally cause I LOVE eating😂

    I am borderline obese (BMI 31 ish) and have been overweight or obese almost my entire life, except for one period in middle school when I became anorexic. The unfortunate flip side of trying to resolve obesity, especially in children, is people can learn to hate their bodies, and attempts to lose weight can actually become damaging. Since that time, I have fluctuated about 40 lb up and down every few months in a roller coaster of anorexic and binge eating behavior. It is really troubling Bc at the end of the day, I am obese and I need to lose weight, but I cannot do that without becoming neurotic and destructive. I know I am not alone, I know there are probably thousands if not millions of people like me in the US, obese kids who grew up being told they were weak willed and lazy, and in an attempt to prove that wrong, end up developing a really unhealthy relationship with food and their self image. Claiming the solution to our weight problem is just diet and exercise is a gross over-simplification, even if true in theory.

      I think the focus should be about our inner health, not our outer health. I have a heart condition that I have been on medication for since I was 18, but never been obese (although fluctuated a bit in weight) I also have pollen allergies, sleep problems and other problems related to the nervous system. I notice a huge difference in energy level and inner health from what I eat. For instance if I forget to take my omega fatty acids supplements (fish oil) my allergy flares up a lot, thats how I notice I have forgotten to take them. The right food boosts the immune system, evens out blood pressure, helps with breathing, heart pumping, everything. It is equally unhealthy to starve yourself to lose weight. I wish people knew how great it feels to eat in a way that you have energy and feel amazing on the inside

      I am of the opinion that part of the reason healthy lifestyle change is difficult for overweight and obese individuals, or even thin folks who eat a lot of junk food; is because processed/junk food is chemically addictive to our brains, like a drug. It’s possible the withdrawal of being removed from those foods causes adverse side effects. Growing up in a family of overweight/obese folks, when I moved out and changed my diet, it was (and continues to be) a challenge not to eat junk food. I still do, but not every day.

When you remove added sugar, you can taste natural sugars again-cabbage becomes a cake. They get that sweet!

    When you eat real foods and healthy meals... they end up being cheaper than fast food because they keep you fuller longer. In addition, you start to crave them and you find processed food tastes like crap. But it takes time to get all those addictive sugar and fats out of your system.

    I think the problems started when fats started to be considered bad and when sugar usage was increased in everything. If you reduce the fat content of something you got to replace it with sugar.

    Losing weight requires commitment, and i truly believe that people get psychologically addicted to bad food just like some get addicted to alcohol or drugs. I was an athlete up to my 20s, then I stopped training and started enjoying food. In 10 years I put on 30 kg. Now I am on a mission to lose them and I am 100 percent focused on this. It is my number one priority. I met with a personal trainer one and a half month ago and his diet and training plan made me lose 8.5 kg since then.

      You probably failed that time. I'll tell you why. You believe that it takes a massive commitment. Make some tiny swaps and be patient creating lifestyle changes. At first maybe commit to just drinking water. You'll immediately feel better after your caffeine withdrawal subsides and drinking non water beverages will make you feel like crap. Just feel how good it makes you feel to drink just water. Keep repeating the process until you are where you want to be. It doesn't take discipline when you realize how good you feel eating healthy and how shifty you feel after a calorie dense meal.

    I've been very overweight in the past (not obese, though). The problem is that most people that are totally uneducated about what they eat and its consequences. I've been on that boat and the first step into changing my body was acquiring knowledge and learning more about it. Eating habits alone won't solve it- people must be active and drop their smartphones for once

    I'm now a whole-food plant based diet flexitarian-very little meat or dairy consumption, (2 weeks & counting). I already feel better & look forward to the health benefits...losing weight will be an added bonus but good health is my motivator. Wrong side of 45 & staring down 50...I want the last part of my half to be one of quality. Also stopped smoking 2 years ago after 30 years. Even though I only smoked about a pack per week it was still hard. Surviving kidney cancer was my motivator to stop smoking, now on to the weight hurdle.

    There are so many wonderful people featured in this documentary. We are all prisoners to the time we live in. I remember as a very young person how I ate and the cultural norms around food. For example eating a salad was seen as not masculine. I think that since this was filmed Americans are more aware of the foods we should be eating. I hope that these lessons have been learned and the future is brighter. I still think that getting an appropriate amount of activity is going to be challenging.

    Eat Real Food. If it's been processed in anyway don't eat it. Plain and simple. Withdrawals from processed foods only last a few weeks.

      I was gonna say that. I crave salads too. Also sugar nd junk so I eat a small amount of it or just stare at it for long enough that I don’t want it anymore lol

    I find it really surprising that someone would ask this question. Of course it's not ok for your health, there is a reason why people of a certain weight are *medically* classified as obesity. But being overweight or obese has become so normal in America that I'm guessing a lot of people ask the same question.

    I've been at least a little bit big, but I was active as a child. However, when I reached my 20's my mental health started to drop, and my eating habits were shit, so I gained a lot of weight. At my heaviest I was 88 kg, and that's when I, thanks to a therapist, decided to change. It's been almost 2 years now, and I've reached 57 kg, which means that I've lost 31 kg. Watching this documentary makes me wonder what sort of internal changes I've made by losing such a huge amount of body weight. My BMI went from 35 to 22.

    Exactly right. Whenever I decide to stray and eat fast food like Taco Bell or Domino's pizza I always feel hungrier soon after (2-3 hours) I eat all those horrible calories. Instant regret.
    Poor quality food makes you hungrier and leaves you fatter. It's a horrible exponential growth that leads to disease and unhappiness.

    To the nurse at 26 minutes, not once did she mention helping them with their nutrition. They need educating.

    Great, now go watch the documentaries out there that describe how stacked the junk food industry is in this country and how fast food is engineered to make you crave it.
    I’m not obese and I don’t eat junk food or fast food as a rule, but when I’m in situations when I needed something quick or easy and I do partake, I can feel how badly my system wants more of it, sometimes even the very same day. People talk about personal responsibility, but if that’s the habit you’re in and everyone else around you is too, it would take an absolutely Herculean effort to break those habits.
    Everyone loves to dog on obese individuals, but we should truly be going after the companies that make the crap in the middle of the grocery store and the fast food chains, because their practices are indisputably unethical.
