  • When the forest is your supermarket, you won’t go hungry.
In the industrial town of Bintulu, residents unable to afford rent have found refuge on empty land. Clearing trees to build makeshift homes and growing their own food in the process, they make simple yet tasty meals that make the most of the meagre income they earn from manual labour jobs.
They show us the absolutely scrumptious dishes whipped up using their free-range chickens and river fish, the flowers and buds of bananas and papayas planted behind their homes, and sourced bamboo shoots and wild plants from the forests in their backyards, just as their Iban ancestors have done for generations.

Very grateful to CNA Insider for trying to help the people who are in need. However, based on the episode I just watch, we cannot describe it as a slum, it is just a middle normal village same as rest in Sarawak. They also have helps and subsidies from government welfare department every month. By the way, I'm from Sarawak and know the best of it. Ahh I almost forget, foods such as Ayam Pansuh, bungai papaya, and pekasam cannot be desribe as slum food because they even served at various hotel and restaurant....the taste is absolutely delicious.
P.S We have to look from different view, maybe from the perspective of Singaporean people, it looks just like slum, but they already have a better lifestyle and living space compared to the rest of poor developed Southeast Asia nations. (This is just my opinion)

@@alexderek5233 The second one shows rumah panjang and that's not a slum. That's just how Iban people live. Calling rumah panjang slum is rude. But yes, the first family is indeed need help and in poverty.

That Ayam Pansuh is really identical to us here in the Mountain Province of the Philippines we call it Pinikpikan but only use ginger and salt in the traditional way.. We always use fire to remove the feathers of the chicken and the taste of the burnt skin adds flavor to the soup as well.. maybe all mountain dwellers in the past has the same instinct here in asia no matter what country it is..And we also add to the Pinikpikan the ETAG a preserve porks meat that is fermented with salt only and dried in the sun or either Kiniing in the other province of the Mountain Province which is always more foggy so they smoked the meat on top of the Stove using wood to cook to dry the meat and set aside for special occations.. The meats used in these types of Etag or Kiniing are the ones that are not cooked pork belly and are usually given to guest's after leaving an event in the old times.. But now you can already buy them at the market and make some of your own.

Bintulu is a booming city where people from the rural kampung came here to look for job opportunities. However, the housing prices are way way too expensive.

in fact, Bintulu attracts people from all over the world, especially because of the oil & gas industry there... I've been living in this nearby slum stated in this video, life was not easy nor hard, the community itself made it livelier... now, most of them were relocated to a flat compound such as Bandaria Park, but some were still left behind... the fact that house prices in Bintulu is skyrocketting is no doubt 😪

I think CNA cannot find a slum food or "real" slum in Malaysia....this is not slum but temporary squatters from countryside who cant afford to rent house in the city, they even owned a car lol, most of the squatters in Bintulu are now been relocated to a housing complex...its not easy to be a squatter or to build slum in Malaysia its illegal same like Singapore, the government will chase you out lol. The problem in Malaysia is house prices are very high...same like in the UK and US. Most young people cant afford to buy or rent house now even though they have stable jobs.
