They were talkative 🤣. It's such a cool story. At 17 and surfed it by himself for 15 years! Awesome

I have a fond memory of talking about Mavericks and Jay and Mark with Billy on a nearby beach. Crazy we were Jay’s age and that the competitions weren’t going on yet in 95 or 96. Great video!

Would never surf waves that big but one day i want to make a pilgrimage to all the massive spots to watch them go off, there is a similar spot close to where i live called Dungeons(Cape Town) dont know if you have heard of it,its not as gnarly but still has the huge waves, sharks and freezing water.

I have great memories of that beach. It’s a really special beach, and not just for Mavericks. 🌊🌊🌊
I hope you don’t mind my sharing my history of that area.
I grew up 3 blocks from Surfer’s beach/Turkey Overflow, which is where the hotel is and about a mile from Mavericks. That’s a small town called El Granada.
When Half Moon Bay and Princeton had a smaller population, my friends, sister and I used to ride our 1-speed bicycles over to Mavericks and collect amazing whole shells, because the tide pools over there are huge and know one knew about them and just never went there.
I’m talking about being age 7- 10 years old. It was a time when kids could be out playing safely until dinner time.
The road was a dirt road.
My father used to be the manager of the radar station above Maverick’s, in the 1970’s- 1980’s and my family was allowed inside the gates as civilian visitors. It’s an amazing view from inside and on top of that bluff.
My father was also was the first steel boat builder in Princeton and owned the first mustard yellow-colored pre-fab warehouse, that are all over that area now.
He built a bunch of 50-foot crab and salmon fishing boats for the professional fishermen.
His name was Alex Gaura. He’s deceased since 2011 but we had great memories of that area.
And as a teenage surfer-punk rocker growing up there, we used to hang out in our cars at Lower Point, which was next to Maverick’s, and just have a blast and do donuts in the mud!
    🛻🍩
Way back before the area was known and asphalt was paved , the 4th of July was a freaking war zone out there with the locals! Ha ha!
    🧨🧨🧨
Now I’m far away but also have a TH-cam channel and travel a lot with my sound healing show, but I swing by when I can and always make sure to go into Princeton, eat at one of the little restaurants there and stop at the beach. 🌊🌊🌊
I’m so grateful I grew up in
HUMBA (as the locals call it).
I love my hometown and all the people I grew up with. 💚✨✨

    I need that sticker!
You did a really nice video and I do love Mavericks though I mostly was a Steamer Lane kinda guy. I used to actually bodysurf it when Third Peak was breaking. I may have been there when Jay was there in the 80's, but I'll never know. I also was a diver at Pidgin Point and ... Greyhound rock, the diver's version of Mavericks.
Nice video. It is so beautiful there... though the diving is .... well, you know.
(By the way, if anyone has any images from Steamer Lane of the bodysurfer with the red belly stripe wetsuit, I'll gladly pay for them.)

    • @ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle
      @ChooseAdventureCaliforniaStyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you! Steamer Lane is fun! I only surf there when it's small though 🤣. That's awesome! It's funny, I surf, compete in open ocean paddleboard races but something about diving creeps me out! Jay was such a cool guy! He treated everybody with respect; even if you were clueless about how to surf. He was fearless. I remember talking to him about surfing outside pleasure point, 10 foot faces at night by moonlight, by himself! Terrified me just hearing him talk about it, to him it was pure joy. Awesome person and waterman.
