About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

Hey Glenn.
Short fun story.
In my old appartment i had this whine bag of a neighbour.
I couldnt work on my music (acoustic, electric, with headset etc. etc...) because she could hear it all. She said she could even hear the “Ping” of the plucked Electric strings. Well..... one Day i was walking through the hallway to my door and i then realized that you could hear ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING in this building... because at that moment i could hear my neighbour exploring the fine art of Cunnilingus with her boyfriend... even the more subtle sounds was present. That evening was the loudest i have played guitar in that horrible building 😂 i never told her, but i Damn well told Everybody else! Im Sorry if this was innapropriate, but i guess there is a lot of people with a good sense of humor. 😜🎸
That made me laugh good one
Please, could you do a comparison demo of multiple loadboxes to hear what is the actual difference in the sound? Like Torpedo Captor, Torpedo Studio, Universal Audio OX, Suhr Load Box, and cheap Harley Benton PA-100, that would be awesome. The same guitar track, the same amp and cab impulse, but different loadboxes, nobody has ever done this comparison (or I haven't found one)
I think Pete Thorn did one very similar to this idea
loading custom IRs: impressive
spitting out raw DI signal for reamping later: amazing
resizeable interface: holy shit, i didn't think my old ass needed that until today
Ive had mine for 2 weeks now, and the most amazing part of the whole contraption is the twin tracker. Its insane dude.
you forgot Noise Gate
You would love a resizable window after using the FAMC-Liquidfood software. It starts out normal size, then sqishes horizontal to half size with no way to restore the window size. I hate that software so much. Also it constantly have issues with drivers, installation files and so on. Never again will I buy a FAMC product. Luckily I bought the MIDI footswitch as used. Now I understand why the former owner sold that piece of shit.
@@johnnymegabyte the noise gate is actually KILLER too, it's soooo good.
Ok, been listening to Leland Sklar- a bassist you’re unable to criticize!!
Everyone should check out his YT channel. It’s an amazing series of great stories. He’s been on every album you could imagine...
Well, to be honest, not mine and I almost sold a demo...
Glenn does respect those bass players who are actually good. Back when he was regularly recording bands, there were a ton who had bass players that had no talent because they thought it was an easier version of guitar (which it isn’t). And according to his experiences with those bands they were not just untalented, they were also very stupid. He has probably seen that thousands of times which probably made him grow an impression towards the regular bass players. But that doesn’t mean that he hates all the bass players, just those who are terrible.
Cedric's Special LP oh, i know. I’m just fucking with him, and also sharing that a bass legend now has a really interesting TH-cam channel, and needs more subs
I am so sorry that I misunderstood your comments so much. Here is the thing. The way that Glenn always talks about bass players made me worried that some people might get him wrong thinking that he hates all of the bass players. So when I saw this comment, I reacted way to quickly and tried to explain everything, while I completed missed the point of the comment. Thanks for your critique. (Oh and as for Leeland Skyler, I do know about him since he was the bassist that almost always toured with Phil Collins.)
Cedric's Special LP it’s all good, my brother! I was really trying to give some love to Leland. He’s doing some really great stuff on his channel. He’s a true pro, and in this time, when these guys can’t tour, any amount of help, monetarily, or just by clicking subscribe, helps them out.
We’ve all been trying to get him to develop merch. I hope he does!
But, he is, still a bass player, hahahahahahahaha
It's always nice to see French companies putting out good products. Cool review !
That's a Great piece of gear!
Thanks for sharing brother and Be Well All!
That tone in the beginning was actually really gnarly! Also, the Two Note stuff is awesome, I only have always had problems with their Wall of Sound crashing all the freaking time (so I don't use it, haha). But I have never encountered bad gear by them.
I know the video is about the captor but the demo song just again stunned me ... your drum tone is amazing. Punchy bright ... soooo nice man :)
Impressive piece of gear. Two Notes always knocking it out of the park!
Best mix so far Glenn!
I’ve got one of these. If you put the tweaking time in there are some great sounds to be had. Super versatile piece of gear.
Nice to hear a power-metal track for the full-mix demo for a change - rather than just random chugging, as so many seem to do when demoing gear for metal. 😁
That Soldano is definitely SICK
The twin tracker sounds great but hit the mono button and, as expected, it's phasey black magic. Definitely useful live though.
Can you use one of these with on of those Joyo heads live ?
This thing has changed my life.
Came for the CaptorX, stayed for the Soldano!
Cheers Glenn!
Seems like this is the best solution to the UA Ox, esp if you only want to use it for home recording with your favorite tube amps
Anyone else catch the cliffs of Dover intro in the guitar solo 😉
Where?
@@johnytipu4514 6:45 or so
@@markuskoivisto looooooooooool now I hear it :))))
WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE LOGITECH MOUSE !?!?!?!?!
Two Notes has some gnarly stuff for the price with that Captor X in comparison to the older 4-16 ohm captors. Seem's like an awesome unit for the money, being much more feature rich and all, only downside is the fixed resistance IMO but, shouldn't bother anything.
We have 16 ohm version coming out VERY soon!
6:34 definetly digging that solo.
Hello Gleeeeeen! What about some Darkglass gear review? The Alpha Omega Ultra has a cab sim that sounds awesome, what do you think about it?
I don’t know why they call it two notes when represents all of them so well!!
Hey Glenn, I think a video about Captor X vs Neural DSP (or other hi end plugins) would be interesting. I wonder wich one sounds the best.
You should do a list video of your favorite albums ever, maybe with commentary on the production or how you got into them
I would love that video as well
Glenn has more guitar skills than I do which suggests that i need more practice hahahahah
Cheers from the Philippines btw hehe
Don't feel bad, Glenn slays with his rythm.
We all need practice bro
Shout out to Jackson, he is currently mixing and played drums on what will be my bands first official release. Cheers mate your awesome
Would like to hear playback from the DAW. I had the Suhr IR device, and the audio/waveforms were super compressed. Any issues with this?
I know this geels sponsored but man you made it look so easy and sound so good i am going to be buying one when my next project is finished and i get my check
Looks awesome, the only thing I'd want included is an attenuation that I can dial gradually rather than 3 fixed db settings
Probably won’t get a response considering this is an older video. But here goes. My wife finally gave me the go ahead to build a full blown studio at home so I’m just trying to soak up as much gear information as I can. I used to do in the box recordings that sounded like ass compared to anything on a record, mainly because of a lack of knowledge, technology wasn’t where it is today and I didn’t have money for expensive gear. Times have changed, I’ve got a captor x and I’ve been looking at getting the 1073opx, I hear 1073’s can color your sound in a good way. The 1073opx is essentially a recording interface. My question is, can I plug my captor x into a 1073opx and have it sound just as good as when I use the headphone output, will it sound better or will it color my sound and make it sound a lot different? Or would you use a dedicated audio interface instead of the 1073opx for the captor x? Maybe this is a bass guitarist style of question, but I wanna make sure I get everything right.
Nice camera point of view. Is it new? I may have skipped a few videos. Keep them coming, Glenn!
Glad to hear this with a great amp.
Hey Glenn when you talk about the weird chorus sound from Gibsons not staying in tune. Was it bad or just not what you were going for? I've heard Zakk Wylde doesn't use chorus in the studio. He just double tracks with the second track slightly out of tune. Might be something to look into. Keep killing it Glenn!
Zakk does double track quite a bit, but his patened chorus sound is brought to us by the fine staff at Roland/Boss.
Ps. Chorus is placed before the amp. This adds some extra harmonic richness.
@@rowemo before the amp? I'm a noob please explain. how do you place chorus before the amp?
@@TheHonestTerrorist Zakk Wylde uses a pedal chorus as the second pedal in his chain (guitar > OD > Chorus > Amp) I believe I think it was a BOSS CH-1 then a standard MXR chorus and then he got a signature chorus. You can clearly hear it in songs like No More Tears and Miracle Man and live it is all over the Ozzy stuff like Live at Budokan.
@@JimijaymesProductions I just found out he is now using his own MXR chorus pedal. Looks interesting. Good explanation of the signal path.
@@TheHonestTerrorist I'd like to point out that chorus or any modulation effect has a drastic difference between placing it before or after overdrive/distortion. Free ads for Colin Scott's CSGuitars channel, he's great at explaining what actually happens in the chain.
I have an older Mac from 08-09 will the software work?
can i use headphone jack to power a 4×12 cabinet
The stereo thing is a good idea it theory... But it definitely still needs some work. It definitely sounds hollow when coming through a mono speaker (like a lot of listeners are actually using, unfortunately 😲)
Hi Javon, indeed it's a great tool for headphones and live playing, not so much as a studio tool, the mono compatibility isn't great. I would say, if you're in the studio, you can probably afford to play your part twice, it's not the same as being alone on stage or playing at night. ;)
@@guillaumepille For sure. Although, there will definitely be some lazy players that will try to use it as an excuse not to play the part twice 😂
Glenn have you tried the Suhr Reactive Load IR?
I like the Mesa Ir more. I am a Mesa fan. And the extra 50 watts the Mesa handles is essential for me. Not gonna sacrifice that much headroom for a measly $50 and get some brand no one ever heard of.
I agree, I watched that vid of him doing the Mesa CCIR and compared to this video with the TNCX the Mesa CCIR just sound way better to my ears and the TNCX sounded low and weak in this video? I just bought a used Mesa CCIR+ yesterday for a great day on Reverb, stoked to try it out soon! Rock on! \m/
The stereo option doesn't sound like a doubled guitar, by far!
I disagree, I have tested the twin tracker with a doubled track and a real double guitar track and none of my bandmates, nor myself when tested, could tell the difference. Add drums and bass and yeah, you're golden, two guitars.
Damn! that sounded very good.
I have watched this yet but I’ve already ordered it... here we go! 😂
Has anyone tried this vs the older Two Notes Captor? I just can't get my Captor to not sound 'artificial' no matter any IR and amp I've tried using.
I have two interfaces both 3rd gen focusrite scarletts but the solo sounds WAY WAY better then if I use the 4i4. I have the 2 notes captor 8 ohm not this one. You would think it'd be the other way around but the solo sounds way way better then the 4i4. The 4i4 is double the price.
I know this is a old ass comment but I'm having the same problem, the best I can get it to sound is to turn off the IR AND cab sim and just send the raw signal into the DAW and then I use Kafir IR loader to load up custom IRs in reaper and while that sounds 100x better than the cab sim software in the captor X it still sounds a bit thin and harsh, but once you quad track and pan far left and far right, a little EQ and it still can sound great.
At the end of the day nothing is going to beat a real cab recorded by a professional in a good environment.
Does the captor X run the power amp sims too on its own?? Hoping to not need the Cab+ just for plugin-free power amp sims
for that price you can get an Line 6 GO pod / AXE FM3, why would you recommend this one?
'case he gots paid
you may need to boost that slo100
Can you get a natural feedback sound from recording with DI?
Do you think It is possible to use The Captor X as the re-amp box itself. Do you think the signal will still be clean without any interference?
Now I just gotta decide if I want to go for one of these or one of the older models (once I start doing real amps anyway. Just picked up NeuralDsp Archetype Nolly, and im stoked for that)
What are the opinions out there on recording the direct signal to IRs in the computer vs using the IRs pre-loaded into the unit ? Any difference that is significant? Trying to decide if I should just get the older black one and just send the signal from the tube amp to Two Notes Wall of Sound plug in nestled in my DAW.
People wanna shit talk you on guitar but that bend at 1:37 about was awesome!
Hey Glen - I use the Palmer PGA-04 - As my loadbox/Cabsim/DI with my Marshall JCM2000 head and it sounds amazing... Have you ever heard of it or used it...? Its pretty old these days and does not use IR's or anything but it terms of cabs to me it sounds like a well mic'd closed back 4x12... Apparently dudes like Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page and EVH used the PGA-03 in the 90's both for live and in the studio, so its got a decent pedagree...Anyway rock on man!
You need to A/B one these next to the Palmer's...
Was considering going with the regular Captor 8 ohm but now I am considering this. Is it worth the jump in price?
Ya ya ya let’s talk about the soldanooooooo
Can anyone tell me if I can use this on a Laney ironheart irt SLS studio?!
I ask because I know there's a 100w limited in the torpedo, but the amp alone is 300w...
Great stuff Glenn. Any chance on a review video for the N Sonic preamp and the Alctron compressor you had in your unboxed video a few weeks ago or did I completely miss that video?
How do you route this for recording
Surely using the built in IR loader would be better/less latency than using a plugin?
Depends on your interface
@@SpectreSoundStudios Really how so? I would have thought letting the Captor load the IR would provide less latency than sending the signal to an IR loader being run by your DAW.
My only issue is I just have a Triple Recto and the Cabclone IR seems to be the only loader that handles 150 watts. Any suggestions?
@joey escobedo I use the master volume as I keep a Ibanez AD-9 in the loop for delay. I wouldn't plan on blasting the volume into to cabclone anyway as I am more into preamp distortion boosted with an OD.
been using it for around 2 months why does it get red when using certain amp heads. especially when using my carvin legacy amp i have to keep at low volume
Can’t say for certain. Hit up Two Notes tech support
@@SpectreSoundStudios ok cool thanks glen
I can't think of a reason not to get this. It costs less than a decent cab and mic.
ohh boy I really like the arrangement played to demo this.... sounded fantastic !
hey the stereo sounds awesome! is it just me?
Just as I recently bought captor 8 and 16 for my cabs! Time to sell em ...
I have an Engl and Peavey that are 120w..... am I gonna blow this thing using it with amps rated greater than 100w? I've not seen a load box that handles more than 100w and asking this question on the internet has gotten me... 'yes you'll be fine' and 'NO DON'T DO IT!'
No, it’s fine. Use it with my 120 watt Revv
Truly great stuff. I won't upgrade from my black model though.
Gleeeeeeeeeeennnn!!! what about solid state or hybrid amps (tube preamp, solid state power section). Do I need this kind of device to hook it up without a cab? I've got a hybrid amp at home and I wonder if I can hook it up directly to the interface since it dioesn't have a tube power section?
Would much apprecciate the advice on that, and cheers from Poland \m/
Oi, DON'T hook up the speaker outpout to your interface, you'll fry the thing! The best way to record like this is to take the FX loop out, hook that into the interface, and then use a poweramp sim (TPA1 is a free poweramp sim and sounds great) and two IR loaders after each other. The first one should have a speaker impedance curve loaded, the second one should be the cabinet IR. I recommend checking out plage scythe studios on youtube, he has great tutorials on direct recording and has a linked list of free IRs to get started
Speaker out into Captor, line out or DI from Captor into interface
Cool stuff
That thing is fucking cool as fuck!!!
Thanks for the cool video. In case I've missed it, have you done any videos on creating impulse responses for amps and cabinets? I've been trying to create my own IRs for my custom cabinets. I've tried a few techniques (voxengo deconvolver and Two Notes software) and another technique from Joey Sturgis Tones TH-cam channel. Right now I'm using the FX return of my amp for the power section to feed the cabinet, run a sine sweep or audio chirp thru to the cabinet, and capture it with a microphone. I understand using a solid state amplifier would yield cleaner/truer results and I plan on trying that soon. Is there anything else I'm missing or could try differently? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks and fuck you Glenn
thats cool I like the sound!! hi glenn wuz happinin!!
First in US?
Jesus Christ that solo
Mom found the load box
we need a Captor for Drums for silent playing LOL
The stereo knob sounds really fuckin phasey
Anyone tried drum re-amping?
Did you mean: *Drum Sample Replacement?*
Glenn isn't dumbing down his playing for his audience he still can't play guitar. lol
LOL
You say that but he quad tracks everything and that’s not easy to get to sound good imo
He can chug just fine. Sometimes that's all ya need.
He gets paid to record and produce/mix/master not play guitar.
@@lifeofalex9199 Shh listen everyone, Cpt Obvious is trying to say something..
When you move the Tightness control I just screamed "WOW".
I've been waiting two months for this to come in... am I the only one who thinks that IR's still don't come close to real cabbed mics? I can't make an IR sound good at all lol...

Thanks Glenn! I appreciate it. Big fan of your stuff... wish I would have won the revv contest lol
Soon as I can afford a pc in getting one of these, getting there with equipment 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Decent piece of gear, but wish it had variable impedence switching. You have to choose to buy either 4, 8, or 16 ohms. For $550, I'll pass.
Idk why you'd need anything other than the 8 ohm model. I never had an amp that lacked a 8 ohms out, and If you hook up a cab to the through output you're not using the loadbox anyways.
@@givemeajackson There are many amps that have variable output impedences, and many that don't have 8ohms. On the variables, using more or less of the outout transformer (impedence switching) changes the tonal characteristics. Do some research about impedence switching and you will discover a whole new world of tones and amps.
Name 2 guitar amps that don’t have an 8 ohm option.
@@SpectreSoundStudios 63 Fender Bassman (I own one), and the Fender Bandmaster (would like one) has 4 ohm output transformer. These amps have been objects of contention regarding their ability to use loads different from their 4ohm output transformers. In my research over the years, I have found it best to match appropriately the output transformer and load. Two Notes offers a Captor in either 4, 8, or 16 ohm loads for amps such as the ones listed above... not sure about the Captor X though.
Oh Lord what have I done I bought a fucking pod go recently. I love it don't get me wrong, but fuck me sideway this is bad ass.
dumping on mesa gets old if the wiring was bad then dont comment on product, duuh,
This is cool, but just too much stuff. Between the endless IRs and the app, it’s just option paralysis to me. What’s this do.. How about this.. Nope. I’m out. I’ll stick to my mic and 4x12, thanks. 😬
Had the same thing happen to me initially when i got into direct recording. But eventually you get through it and start understanding what to look for. Imo a mic in front of a cab is still the first choice if you w want to make a record, but the loadbox/IR path has distinct advantages in certain situations. The obvious one is bedroom recording, but imo where this really shines is lve. You can take a great mic'd up PA tone with you on tour, have it be the same every where you go, you get all the advantages of a modeller while still playing a real amp, and you can monitor through your cab if you want to or have the same sound in your in ear monitors wherever you go. But IR recording is definitely a whole new skill to learn, it takes a while to get into it.
Really neat.......but $800
numero uno in uk
mudkiller is cool glenn, i use a maxon tdo9 tube into sims like the sigma or mikko, big diff on the transient bite , i dont dig downmixing drums to the guits and the maxon gets me that 20 percent just more lively solution to flat sims the whole real cab n mic debate thing, it gets it done, :) great vid man
ahhh $549.00 uggggg.
Little expensive for kids that don’t have much $$$ imo
Ayeee
Sweet. Way too expensive.
It's literally the cheapest option on the market for its class...Ox box and Waza Tube Expander are both literally twice the cost of this thing and arguably only one (WTE) really makes sense to splurge on IMHO.
Timothy Williams I was gonna say^ $550. If it was more than $50 cheaper, I’d be curious as to where they compromised on it. Great deal for a great unit. Waited months for mine on preorder and I love it.
I have the original captor and no matter what I do my amps sound like shit
GLENN GLENN GLEEEEEEENN!!!
I need your help.
(This one's the only important part in the comment)
1. Since you're definitely more knowledgeable about ear hygene, and sound in general:
Is wearing earplugs through the night, every night, detrimental to my ears in any way?
I am asking because the crickets outside are loud enough, that I wake up slightly deafened (or muffled, similar to when you go up a mountain or down from it).
This problem exists, because I do want to keep the window open, so as to not wake up in a nasty air filled room.
(This one's unimportant, you may ignore it, only asking for your opinion / preference)
2. You've made your point clear, that you want to hear genuine drum performance, especially in metal music.
Still, do you ever enjoy synthesized drum samples, in the genres that are typically synonymous with them?
Or would you still rather hear real drums regardless of genre?
I, personally, actually prefer the artificial drums when it comes to Synthwave and such, as they give it its own "personality" and sound.
(This one's unimportant, you may ignore it)
3. Could you explain in more detail, why "anything said before the word but doesn't mean jackshit"?
The reason for posing the question, is that you sometimes say the aforementioned phrase.
Then, on other occasions, you don't bring it up, and other times you use the word "but" yourself.
Best I can come up with, is that it apparently depends on the context.
I was raised by the religious and, as a consequence, I lack critical thinking (which pisses me off), hence me asking this.
Also what do you think of "and yet / although / still" as substitutes?
Do they change the intended meaning, considerably?
4. What do you think of Hammerhedd?
5. Do you know those T-shirts, "I'm with stupid"?
How about "I'm with bass player" or "I'm with drummer".
It'll be too subtle for them to get it.
Fuck you from Wallachia, Glenn-chan, and thank you for everything.
1. if it has a similar effect to coming up or down a mountain, your ears might be experiencing pressure issues rather than noise issues. Sometimes changes in the weather can bring about drastic air pressure differences, and your ears are taking the hit for it, especially if you keep your windows open at night. It's similar to how older people can feel a storm coming "in their bones."
Glenn, I live 15 minutes from you... sell me the Soldano? I’m the 312 number that texted you on July 2nd. 💪🏻
Too expensive
Meh
Don't record an electronic drum kit, yet Do record guitar through an impulse response, (if it's my IR and I get paid). Watch videos, of mic'd up drums that are processed beyond recognition, EQ and parallel compression, and being told that drum samples are wrong, because they don't capture the live performance, despite all the lessons about processing the recording, yet recording guitar through an IR is somehow genuine.... Just think about it.
I get it that someone invested a large part of their life recording live drums, but so did those that recorded the drums samples that can be triggered by an e kit that you actually have to play. Yet, 'Come and Buy my IR's', which is playing a guitar through a WAV file that manipulates the sound (t's a sample). Oh well, practice your stance in front of a mirror. Pretend to be in Slayer in front of a mirror. Don't write anything original and buy lots of plug in's.
And no, shouting won't change the fact that IR's are samples as well as playing an e kit through MIDI.
Congratulations, that's the dumbest thing i've read today. IRs are the same as sample replacement? Do you even know what an IR does? Maybe the silence on your part should have remained unbroken...
You do realize taking the drummer out of the situation adds a sterileness and nonhumanness that is definitely audible. IR's are still the guitarist playing....it's just essentially a complex EQ that is being applied to the raw guitar track. The difference between these two things are night and day.
