BTW, as strictly an IR loader, no FX, which one sounds better?
How about as an attenuator? No FX..
      Thanks.

Your IR's are too expensive. Individual cabinets/speaker typically retail for $8 each. Just sayin'... Perhaps, a 50% off discount code? Just askin'... ;-) Good luck!

I was shocked to learn that it only requires power for the virtual cabs and IRs. Even when it’s not plugged in, it still functions as a load box and attenuator for your amp and cabinet. That’s pretty handy. My amp already has an XLR output that I send to the DI, so I don’t have to worry about powering the Captor X on every time, unless I need the virtual cab/IR feature. The load box and attenuator are just always there working in the background, even when I forget to power it on. Very cool.

    Hey T...great vid as always
We have three studios and we swear by the Ox. We have one in each studio.the clarity and translating the
bloom of the tube amp. The playing experience truly connects the player with the amp just as if the guitar its plugged directly into the head.
We tried the waza and everybody agreed the sound was substandard and the resonance and presence switches changed thing very little.
The waza software is terrible and you must connect to you computer usb to do anything. There is no wireless option/
The Captor X has an excellent app to control everything from your phone.
The Captor x is better sounding than the Waza in our opinion . It’s closer to the Ox but not that close. The captor x requires
a lot of fiddling and tweaking to get an acceptable sound. But that said you can get a rewarding sound if you spend the time.
Clean and crunch sounds sound pretty darn good. When we output a Plexi or JCM 800 the Captor needs a lot of. Eq twiddling.
That said if you spend the time you can get much closer to the Ox and we really like the noise gate it has a learning function for quick setup.
The twin tracker is useful and with some adjustments it can sound massive.
The reverbs are not good or usable...we end up using a Strymon in the loop to get good results.
With our years of practice and playing professionally we will spend the extra money to be able perform with the best sound equipment available.
The ox is fantastic and we love it, but for the price and portability the Captor X is a blast!

I agree... I've been using two notes live for years and just recently purchased 3rd party Irs from celestion. I can't believe how much more big and natural sounding the celestion ir's sound compared to the two notes ir's. I can't believe what I've been missing all these years. I've now fallen down the IR rabbit hole but virtually every third party company IR I've tried is substantially better than Two Notes. That's disappointing considering I thought they were a leader in the industry. I've also experienced the same substandard sounds in my daw when running their wall of sound when compared to using a different third party IR loader. In my experience, Two Notes hardware and software does something to the sound that gives it a thin, compressed, and very digital sound, especially when compared to others.

Hi, but with the ox, everyone says there is a problem with connecting and it's a bit disturbing, isn't it? I want to know already what to decide to buy for recording in the studio not for performances outside. Just for the studio. Then I noticed that there were problems with the ox connecting. So I can't decide anymore. Maybe someone can give me some good advice. Thank you

  • @MaPa60

Love the music first, and talk afterwards. I own a Captor regular 8ohm version, and use it for silent recording of my tube amps at home. The version I have does not have IRs, so its more barebones, but I add IRs in the DAW, and it sounds and works well, also with pedals in the chain. I did consider the UA OX, but I didn't want to pay for the limitations also mentioned in this video, and the wifi issues in the software is an absolute dealbreaker. Id rather go for the Boss Tube Amp Expander then. But the Two Notes gear is great, and I will keep using my Captor for quite some time. Its built like a rock!

You can put hundreds of IR's on Captor X. Just need to set the length to 20ms, which is plenty long enough to make it sound good. This confused me too at 1st because the default IR length in captor is 500ms from memory. Problem solves. Awesome bit of kit, really well thought out and sounds great.

I ordered ma 16 ohms version and then realised my old tube amp ( 1967 Fender Stageman ) is 8 ohms after ui ordered it. The shop was able to switch my order and i returned the 16 and they sent me a 8 ohms but perhaps worth mentioning. Keep up the great work man - love your channel!

These ~20 min videos are just the right length to maintain interest & get the main points across without getting lost in the weeds. I also have gotten bored with the nonsensical comedic distractions that so many other TH-camrs are incorporating these days. It seems to have gone way over the top & is often very distracting. Please keep doing what you do, as it really works!

I just got one of these. I'm using it with a Marshall JCM 800 Combo. I really like the low setting. Great sound without the neighbours being annoyed. The low setting is pretty quiet, as you say, but that isn't an issue for me. The software installation was easy and it's really good. I really think that they should have included one more attenuation setting - at least. The top one means basically 'off'. I would have liked a setting between low and middle and another setting between mid and high/no attenuation. The options are too limited. The head-phone option and the option to plug into the interface instead of the cabinet, is very good, especially for recording. Over-all, it's great, especially seeing I got it on sale.

Captor X,... a box that does many tasks at a good level of quality. The OX Box,... less bells and whistles but performs its tasks at a level of greatness. I'll pay more for less features if a unit nails the features it was intended to perform. Personally, I'm a little tired with products that try to be everything to every differing task required during a recording session. The best gear I have worked with always has less knobs and buttons than the one size fits all approach. OX Box,... I love you for your plainness and authenticity,...you're truly a natural beauty, SMOOCH!

Rhett, as regards to the slots available for the IR's, I have just come to realize that there are more than you might have thought, as there are in fact 4 banks available for slots, as follows :
    - 512 slots for 20ms IRs, in 4 banks of 128 slots
    - 256 slots for 40ms IRs, in 4 banks of 64 slots
    - 84 slots for 100ms IRs, in 4 banks of 21 slots
    - 44 slots for 200ms IRs, in 4 banks of 11 slots

Awesome review, Rhett. I purchased the standard Torpedo Captor right when the lockdown occurred. Personally, I would probably not use it in a live setting, but for at home recording it is worth every penny. The TwoNotes Wall of Sound plugin is great and I find myself using both OH IRs as well as IRs within the TwoNotes plugin. I can see those who need an IR loader for live use purchasing the Captor X.

Antonio Pereira that’s kinda what I hear. I think suhr has a better reactive load. But it’s nice to be able to adjust mic placement and distance. I’ve been kicking around getting the suhr reactive load IR and connect a Cab M thru the one DI out. Be able to mix and match with a solid reactive load. I’m mainly looking for a recording tool. Not for live shows.

    • @sunday.76
      @sunday.76 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Stephen Naveed I’ve owned and tried them all including this new captor x. While they all have some individual strengths the best I’ve used and still continue to own is the boss Waza tube amp expander. The selective active load makes all the difference and works better with all my amps. It’s in the response and feel that all the others seem to lack or feel off. I will agree the suhr reactive load ir is next best, but lacks a lot of features the boss TAE has. Being able to add an effects loop after the amp with the boss TAE is just killer! It suits studio and live the best I’ve found and why I chose to keep it over all the others. My issue with this captor x is the reactive load doesn’t feel natural with about half my amps and the software is just over bloated. Although getting a good time can be found using it, I just find it takes longer and there’s more futting around to get there. The attenuate also is poop on the captor x. The click steps as this dude says isn’t great. Again boss TAE takes cake with fully linear attenuate pot with a full sweep.

Rhett, it's time for a solo album. I'm serious dude. At least an EP. These opening jams are insanely good.
I think you went a little hard on the Captor. I understand that you prefer the reverbs on the Ox more, but you gotta consider that most of the guitarists buying it won't be using it for gigging. That's the perfect device for home recording without getting arrested for turning your amp up. Effects like overdrive and distortion may get baked in, but most of the "fancy stuff" like reverbs, delays, modulation, etc will be done with better pedals or in post - with plugins that put the OX effects to shame as well. That's the whole reason I didn't jump at the Waza Tube Expander. $1200 bucks for a bunch of extra effects I would never use while recording. At half the price, this thing is totally the answer for us home recording nerds.

Beautiful arrangement of Cover Me Up, Rhett. I have both the Ox and the Boss tube amp expander, and I find I gravitate towards the boss in my studio. Maybe they’ll send you one to review?
I know I’d never gig with either because of the size and weight, and having an extra piece of gear to worry about. But if I did, the wall wart issue is annoying. The boss has an IEC cable, and I believe it’s worldwide universal. I would definitely want this from a piece of live gear. The other feature that seems like a no-brainer would be to have stereo capability. It wouldn’t need to have another load or attenuator, just a guitar-level input to take the R-side output from a stereo effect on my board, like the H9. If torpedo would add these two features I could definitely see this on top of a tube amp at a gig.

I'm primarily a session player, so the Ox Box is the better fit for me. Little salty on the price, but the sound quality, for me, is much better in the Ox than the Captor. Your tone at 15:20ish with the Ox Plate Reverb is amazing. Nice job.

I bought this as soon as it came out. I personally love it but I 100% agree with you on the reverbs in it it sounding the very best out there and I do hope they fix that they eventually with firmware updates. Also, you didn’t really go into the double-tracking feature which is magic! Very important thing.

Dude, your studio is getting stacked! You are correct with the audio quality of the OX over the Captor X. If I hadn’t just bought a Strymon Iridium, I would probably pick up the Captor X. It checks off a few boxes.

Thank you

Another flow of the Two Notes Torpedo Captor X is that you have to purchase either 8 Ohms or 16 Ohms versions. Easy to have a selector for 8 or 16 Ohms, it may add a bit more hardware but it would optimize the production as well.

Due to my hearing problem I was forced to switch to inear some 3-4 years ago. Back then I played a Friedman SB and used the Palmer Bonamassa DI for inear. The sound wasn´t really that great, though, so I switched to Kemper and -BAM- what I got into my inear was great. I studied the market and noticed that there was really much going on in getting real tube amps into the digital world, peaking with the OxBox, which is - to me- way to expensive and prolly too sophisticated, as well. As soon as I saw the first vids on the Captor X I preodered it. Yesterday I connected my gear, the Friedman SM, my beloved pedal board and I new instantly: YES, this is it. And frankly playing a real amp again just feels ... better, yes! I also cannot comment on how it is on stage but what I heard so far it exceeds all my expectation and I cannot wait ´till I dfo my first recordings! Best buy since the Kemper!

I always thought of the Ox for studio/home use. The Captor X was always in my mind more for live uses. They are both amazing and fantastic in bridging the gap between analog and digital. I would buy the Captor first for home recording uses. The Ox whilst being brilliant it is a bit on the expensive side. If you use your studio a lot or as part of a business then the Ox would pay for itself. The Captor may be cheaper but still no small amount. It was designed for more live applications because of its small form factor. The Captor is better value it depends on your usage needs. Either way they are both brilliant and would be happy with either. Oh by the way the opening jam was brilliant, really enjoyed and loved it.

Thanks Rhett! Killer opening tune as mentioned. Regarding gigging, I had two prototypes that I was able to gig with from Jan- March, before the world was shut down. Here's my BIG takeaway. It was so light and compact- literally carried it in my gig bag. It made load in/ out a breeze.

Hey Rhett, great video. I have an Ox and from a studio perspective it’s perfect. Also, a tip. You can have the Ox Box log on to your network. So your computer or iPad won’t have to change to the Ox Box network. 😊

I was tempted to buy the Captor X but settled on a Captor and an HX Stomp because that is far more flexible setup. I'm using the HX Stomp as a standalone FX board for small gigs, delay pedal as a part of a wider rig, Acoustic guitar IR loader for acoustic gigs, an IR loader with my amps and Captor, and as an audio interface. I can still use Two Notes Wall of Sound if I want to (haven't had any need as of yet).

Thank you for your honest observations. Your delivery is always on point, and the beauty part of it is that you keep true to yourself. It is hard to express on something honestly when that thing is sent to you for free but I think you did it flawlessly without offending the sender by telling the truth. I hope you will stay this way. And like others have mentioned, that opening track is simply awesome!
