- A zoner is an archetype in fighting games that relies on long range tools to fight from distance. There are multiple characters in KOF who specialize in the zoning play style and we're going to count the 10 of them who proved to be exceptionally aggravating to fight.

Athena just HAD to be here. I swear, you can’t go through one single KOF game without hearing “Psycho Ball” in quick succession. It’s basically the “Summertime Lovin’” of the series and easily one of the most spammable projectile in the game. Btw, thank you for an informative and yet entertaining list, Shoryugamer. Maybe Bao not being playable spares all zoner haters from his wrath. XD
Athena is the quintessential Zoner. Gotta love her

Seeing Meitenkun on the list shows that you shouldn't underestimate the sleepy kid with the pillow. That will be the last thing you'll see before getting knocked out. XD

Surprised Krauser didn’t make the list considering he’s basically SNK’s Sagat.
Throwing high/low Blitz balls and following up with his other specials when an opponent tries rolling past them was pretty much how I blew through KOF 96’s arcade mode when using him.
Krauser is fucking legend his best version is realbout. Hope we get to see him again. He's the few snk boss that actually has no evil scheme he just fight you for the glory of winning and losing.

Bao ain't the only one who's Hitbox was ridiculously too small to land a Punch, remember how freaking small Choi's Hitbox was since KOF 94,
But hey, at least it ain't like Yoda from Soul Calibur 4 and Gon from the Japanese Tekken 3 port.
You know what is funny?
According to official info, Mui Mui is the shortest character in the KOF series.
Yep, she is shorter than Bao and Choi but she doesn't have the same hitbox issue like them (?) 🤔
I mean, she is already good in KOF XIV and SNK Heroines but a smaller hitbox would make her an annoying character to play against.
I know there is a difference between Zoners and Keep Away characters.

Imagine if Ninon Beart enters the mainline games one day.
She would be a zoner, that's for sure.
Krauser was a noticeable omission, but my money is on Lucky Glauber. The trajectory of his basketballs are difficult to predict in the middle of a hot match, and his Terry Bogard-style anti-airs and his teleport make him a force in the hands of a practiced player.
I'm still heartbroken that Kensou is not in 15
I hope Bao returns, but he's working in tandem with Baitang for a new suite of offense and a reasonably sized hitbox.
And the best thing, I love playing as zoners and most of characters on this list are favorites to me.
Now that I've learned about Bao's potential, feel bad for who's gonna face me, they're gonna suffer a lot.
I love playing Bao and hope he returns in KOFXV on the Psycho Soldiers team with Kensou and Momoko.
Zoners have always been around since fighting games were conceived and KOF is no exception. On one hand, they're fun to use as they can be easy to play but on the other hand, they can be annoying to contend with since they can drive you mad.
10) Having that for Duo Lon is a benefit. Also he reminds me of Dhalsim with his stretchy arms and Kid Buu with the whole leg coming out of the ground thing.
9) I never dealt with the boss version of Omega Rugal but at least with this, I say that this eye beam makes up for it. At least it's not the Kaiser Wave. Still waiting for when Krauser comes to KOF again.
8) I enjoy Robert no matter the game and yes, he changed a lot and since KOF 13, he reverted back to his old style. Though NESTS Robert though, he's really fun. Yes, I love playing as Guile in Street Fighter but having them charge based can lead to some careful tactical planning. If he was like Guile fully with similar combos, he'd be busted with that high damage output.
7) Ash is an interesting zoner in terms of his projectiles. That and the EX of his move can really add the pain. Like NESTS Robert, he fits the Guile archetype to a T.
6) Athena was always consistent no matter what KOF game when she appears. And yes, in 98, why they made her voice louder when she says Psycho Ball. Jeez.
5) I love Kensou in KOF. I wish he was in 15 but yeah, he's just that fun since he has fast fireballs, fast sweeps and serious combo opportunities. I enjoy playing as him in KOF 98 because holy crap, he can hit hard.
4) Since Fatal Fury, this guy is the definition of annoying when it comes to his projectiles. The hitbox in them is big. Real big, depending on the game. In KOF 15, I hate this guy especially when if you dodge his Hurricane Upper, he can go into either his Thrust Kick or his Tiger Kick. That's unfair.
3) King is the queen of zoners for a reason and depending on the game, she can be one of the best or one of the worst. Not to mention she's one of many characters who can have different moves be supers and vice versa. I still remember in XI that she can throw fireballs in 3 different trajectories. That's the definition of a zoner. Also she has many moves that are safe on block.
2) This little brat is a pain. Meitenkun is not only an annoying zoner but a brat that is just a pain in the ass. Getting rekt by pillows is embarrassing. And yes, the EX version is like a jump scare especially the heavy version.
Honorable Mentions: I know Andy had projectiles but thing was, he underwent some changes where he didn't have projectiles. Hell, the NESTS saga gave his Hisshouken Heavy a multi-hit close projectile. Thank god from KOF 13, he's back to how he should be but I miss his multi-hitting Shoryudan he had. But yeah, his Zan'ei ken is good. Also I like Heidern since his projectile was a charge base. He had a motion one in 2001 but he's still annoying to play. Takuma is awesome with his projectiles though.
1) Bao, Bao, Bao... bloody hell. This guy is a zoner to an extreme. Jeezus. Having horizontal, bouncing diagonal, vertical, air based, super, gravitational and even human fireballs is just insane. I'm serious. If Bao was in KOF15, they would nerf the hell out of this guy because he would be top tier or Tier 0.

I played King alot, but not spam her venom strike that much, her moves are just fast, satisfice animation and awesome easy to follow combo. She's that good even without her projectile.

Not until earlier this year did I learn King was a Zoner. Everytime I fight her I get annoyed and I also play her but it never clicked into my head that she was a Zoner.
Athena, Bao and Kensou are so cool, I don't care how many psycho balls they throw at me, I'll be spamming AB all match if necessary
The best version of Robert: Another Robert. Any SNK game with Dan, even the unofficial ones, are excellent.

I play King and I love her so much. She was one of the first characters do SNK I ever played and she is literally perfect for my play style. Not to mention her design. I don’t regret anything, I will zone you out for fun if you don’t respect my Venom/Double Strike(s)!

10. Sho Hayate (Gai Tendo has a hard super, Silber is a cameo in Krohnen’s outfit, and Jazu is from one of your best videos).
9. Adelheid Bernstein (not mentioned in any Shun’ei saga interview so far).
8. Eiji Kisaragi (the most forgotten stand alone character in the Orochi saga, only being known as the one beaten up by Iori in 95)
7. Nameless (not forgotten by players but SNK. Possible idea to revive him is for him to be the 10000th Kyo clone instead right after K9999 (Krohnen) and for the KOF all star plot to have happened before K’ reached Igniz and for Nameless and Isolde to be revived by ReVerse).
6. Momoko (only present after XI in Psycho Soldiers endings)
5. Duck King (of course)
4. Hwa Jai (not present in XII unlike Raiden)
3. Love Heart and Mui Mui (since the Pachinko rights were sold)

I didn't really appriciate charge fighters until SF4 so I didn't understand why Robert was a charge fighter in 2000. I feel bad for missing out.

For a while now I wanted to get into KOF and I started with KOF 15 and which I love to use k’ shermie, and Meitenkun who I didn’t know was a zoner only because I’m not really good at fighting games

The new Awakened Shermie would probably make a honorable mention due to how her ex projectile when she sends it in from behind the opponent can basically interrupt their combos and this is compounded by the fact if she is hit out of it the projectile STILL comes out

Zoners in general always have a slight advantage in battle.
Had a difficult time mastering King's Double Strike back in KoF95.
Good work explaining the kof lore :) and having diverse lists for kof. I started doing kof lore in kof all star the mobile game on my channel :) its cool mixing a mobile kof with the previous generations of kof games especially atm kof 15 since they cross over in the kof all star game :)
Would there ever be a video like: Top 10 Alternate versions of characters? So many fighters have alt versions and changed styles through the series. That be really deep and selective.
For me the most annoying zoner wasn't specifically a zonner, it was just K Dash. Annoying. So very annoying.

I used to cheese Athena using Leona's Baltic Launcher(?). Just stun lock her with it, hopping left to right until she's down. Used to do that in '96 and '99.
Good thing Marco, Tarma, Fio, and Eri were never considered for KOF.

They're zoners who also anti zoners too, like they're reflector that Athena and Bao has.
I miss Bao a lot hope in the future installment they could bring the lil boy back in the game pair him with the queen of zoners Athena and Meitikun it would be a nightmare.
The fact that you didn't include Daimon here means you never faced his earthquake slams. Goro is a boss of close combat and he can grab you from air. Add that with his unavoidable earthslam and even bosses stand no chance. That's literally how I won the early Kof games. Haven't played after 2000 so don't know if they discontinued it
What do you mean by "unavoidable"? As long as you jump or crouch you're safe.
Bao is my favorite character from all the KOF games. Even I have a playlist of videos of Bao where this fight or some other where he talks about him or his story.
Great video! lol @ telling Athena to shut up! Yeah, her constant yelling did get annoying. I would honestly take Bao if that meant Kensou could come back! I miss playing with him since he's the first player I truly learned in KOF. This is a good list that I can't dispute!

Athena is one of my mains and even tho i love her i can agree that in the wrong hands she can be a little difficult to fight against (but not as impossible like some people make her to be, you can get a hold of her sometimes unlike other zoners)
