We definitely recommend getting an ice cream maker. We love ours by Cuisenart. Just be sure to by one with a compressor because the othes won't work in the heat of the tropics. Also, LOVE the NFC tags. That's freaking brilliant!
We will have to keep saving up the pennies for a machine. The NFC system has been working great for a long time now. Surprises we haven’t seen more people using it onboard.

@@RedSeas 😂, But try them egg noodles as a quick stir fry, you probably think “ disgusting” 🤢? Love the NFC tag idea! We have a sprawling spreadsheet for provisioning & spares, but it’s clunky to use & update. Your idea seems pretty solid - thanks!
Cool. Yeah we used to use spreadsheets for everything. Zora takes most of the work load these days b it until we complete bringing the nfc stuff into Zora, notes works well for us. The main reason we don’t use Google sheets is that notes is offline stable so we can check things and make changes while on passage too.
It would be great for storage but unfortunately it’s super expensive if we did the full provision that way. That and there isn’t really much of it around the kind of places we have been sadly. I think we had some (soup and pot noodles I think) but we didn’t really use them all that much so it fell off the list. If we could find a steady global supply of army ration packs that would be amazing. Some of the best sticky toffee pudding ever!!
Thanks for a great Idea with the NFC tags. I use lots of Notes as detail on projects or mower maintenance tracking waterfilter changes and a lot of info detail. the use of a Tag will add more dimension😍 to my current ideas and will add to my barn/garage for getting a handle on power tools and blades I have and track too.
They have been a great way to keep track of things. Provisions, workshop storage etc. super easy to maintain and great when you are standing in the hardware store and can’t remember if you need more grinder disks.
I have two freezers on my 30ft Catalina. I vacuum pack my meats. They are fresher, and last a good bit longer in the freezer. Also you can pack a lot more in ...
Greay video!! You showed a folder and papers during the video. Do you really do it all manually? I have a very similarly organized Google spreadsheet for charters that I figured could be adapted for cruising. I thought I remembered your website offering a provisioning spreadsheet in the past?
Interesting provisioning. I was mentally doing my own for 6 months and came up with $750-$1000 for just me, but also no extras. And I’m using NYC Metro area prices. Would have liked to see more of a breakdown in costs. What you as Europeans consider expensive might still be cheap for me. Or even a NYC vs. Florida comparison can yield different numbers. $3000 for 6 months is not bad though for 2 people. It’s much less than I currently spend.
We will have to spend some time working on the breakdowns for a future video I guess. In our case, we are 100% supported by patreon and TH-cam for our episodes and so budget is tight. Probably more down to that than European vs US I think. 😂
@@RedSeas true. Regionally prices can differ a lot though. If I was doing this, I could see myself working locally for a few weeks just to spruce up the food budget.
I think you did incredibly well. I don't think too many of us would be able to provision for 6months. Cost was pretty good really. Did that also include much fresh food? You are both very organised and you even taught me something for my phone. The shortcuts. Look forward to where you are heading for next
Great question. We do keep track of our spares for the boat and generally try to keep stocks up as soon as we are in range of a chandlery. We didn’t show it in this episode, mainly because we did a few different trips to pick up things is drips and drabs.

Great episode about provisioning. Curious,,, why take all the labels off the cans? Is it because the moisture will make them soggy and fall off on their own? The cabinet 'air tag's are an awesome idea. I'm going to use that in my garage to help me know what tools are in what cabinet,,, thanks for that.
Good question! As I think someone else has clarified, the labels can house insect eggs which then infest the boat so we always remove the labels and write on what is inside. Also makes it easier if any time explodes or stores get damp as the paper doesn’t turn to slush. 😊
That’s a great question. We do try to get one of everything we are unsure of but that isn’t always possible so there’s usually a few things we just have to take a gamble with.
Mains freezers are what they fit on SA boats ...due to their daily power cuts ...they are phenominaly well insulated so stay frozen for many hours as long as you dont open them. Dawn Hunters just bought a massive older S African older Al expedition catameran..
It’s a guilty pleasure when you’re on hour 6 of the graveyard shift on passage. Wakes you right up. That and always nice to offer when we rock up in a small village somewhere.
@ i don’t not drink it because it’s not healthy, (we all know it’s not health food) i just lost the taste for it.. we have cans of it in the bar that have been there for years.. plus it sends my sugars through the roof, getting type 2 diabetes as i get older.. maybe has something to do with it.. chocolate? That’s understandable, my wife destroys chocolate 2-3 days a month, apparently a lot of women do, i won’t stand between a woman and her chocolate stash! 😂
Yes I love your videos. I say that so you don't think I'm always judging but "damn that's a lot of soda!" And a lot of plastic. Have you thought of a soda maker? I don't know if it tastes as good but that's a of space
You are totally right about the space it takes up and we have tried a few different options here. Cans explode as they wear through with the movement of the boat, soda streams are popular in places like the Caribbean but buying the syrups and refilling gas bottles is super tricky in many parts of the world. It’s worth noting that everything on a boat has multiple purposes and so these bottles remain onboard after the drink is consumed. They are then had for things like oil changes, coolant flushing and so on. With pretty much all provisioning we try to find a way to reduce or reuse packaging but it’s sadly not always possible at the scale we are buying things. All a good point however and one we would love to see change. We have also been able to find drinks in glass bottles in the past which has been a huge win. Just not this time sadly.
I only know that boats float most of time, still I always wonder why no one puts a 500w wind turbine at the top of the mast? I stock up for only 3 months, only thing I learned was, defrost the veg in the fridge a day before use and buy 20% more supplies than you need. Also good to ask about item limits before you get to the till. Most smaller stores will let you order cases of items without limits.
Thankfully, we haven’t hit the limits in shops yet but we are usually really careful not to empty a shelf and make life harder for locals. The wind gen solution is so chalk and cheese. Some people swear by them others say they aren’t worth it. I have only ever seen one installed at the top of a mast but I think most people like to avoid the extra weight so high up from the center of gravity.
There is only one shop that offers online shopping in FP and sadly we wouldn’t have been able to check the items before placing a large order. Way too much risk in paying that much money to get the wrong brand of chocolate after all. 😊
Great video guys! When I was watching you de label the cans I was going to suggest writing on the tops of the cans. But I then saw you were laying them on their sides so wouldn’t be helpful.
Cheers! I think we did the tops the first time we provisioned and quickly learnt that wasn’t going to work for us. I’m sure there will still be a few rounds of tin roulette tho
Do not get raided by Customs like Parlay Revival did..2 hour search they pulled everything out. What did they do... they visited an off the route island missing Fiji .... 🧐They were not amused... till they searched every orrofice and container on the boat. 😂😂🧙🏼♂️
I know right?!? They have been getting really cautious out there recently. We have heard a bunch of cruisers getting inspected to a silly extreme (cutting away engine bay insulation to check if there is anything inside the foam kind of crazy). Thankfully, FP haven’t gotten that bad yet. They did a deep search when we first arrived in the country but we got them laughing after a few minutes as usual.
It’s a good question. There are a few reasons. Mainly, insects like to lay eggs behind the labels and in the glue so by removing them, we reduce the risk of an outbreak in our provisions. Second to that, if our provisions get damp for any reason, the labels don’t turn to slush and clog up our drainage systems.
Try vacuum sealer for food like pasta, cereal etc...
