I recognised Bob from the lineup straight away, but I've only ever seen the clip from the final round on outtake shows, the rest of the episode was all new to me!
I realise it was only his third time hosting, but Max was pretty lucky to have all his little mistakes overshadowed! Particularly liked the prize noise having to be played twice to remind him to say they'd won a prize :)
Poor Max perhaps he was going through the early stages of dementia at the time, as he was later diagnosed with that illness.
I remember that someone asked Max about the turkey answer. What he seemed to think happened was that the contestant must have heard the stuffing question whilst the other guy was answering. When he came back out he just became fixated on giving the answer turkey. Of course it could have been that he just panicked and was like a deer, or should that be turkey caught in the headlights!!! He certainly stuffed his family's chances of winning.
£1000 wasn't that much even in 1983, it's about £3200/$4000 adjusted for inflation. People just enjoyed the programme and besides, there wasn't much else to watch early evening on a Sunday back then!
Or maybe he heard someone on the set shout Turkey but he didn't know what question it was for.
I think he overheard “turkey” and then tried to say “trunks” for the first answer and got himself in a muddle. Then said it again as it is an item you would buy in a supermarket. Once he got the dreaded turkey out of the way, he did start to think properly before running out of time. That’s my guess anyway.

I suspected it when I saw Max as host & then knew when I saw the families.
As soon as I saw of the shot of the Johnson family, I knew what exactly which episode it was. I’ve seen the turkey clip so many times.
The only Max episode that is remembered. The Irish round is legendary on its own, people just saying anything that sounds vaguely Irish. They start flinging politicians' names out hoping one sticks, and the one that did might have caused offence at being called Irish!
Max did manage a couple of years before the show went on hiatus and returned with Les. Back at this point in time, the producer was William G. Stewart, later to become known in front of the camera hosting Fifteen to One. He was quite stern, he must have lost the will to live by the end!
By all accounts, William G. Stewart was a lovely man. My housemate’s grandmother went on the show and he visited her in hospital when he heard she was sick.
My uncle and granddad went on Fifteen to One twice, and my uncle did tell me, to be fair, he was pleasant enough, he only looked imposing. I only have their second shows, their first is lost to time, sadly.

So I remember watching a thing on ITV, sometime in the late 2000s. Bradley Walsh visited the Johnston's (this is somewhere on TH-cam as well). The family said what happened. When when Bob was coming back to answer his questions, he overheard the audience mention chicken was one of the answers (or something to that effect), so as chicken was one of the answers, surely turkey would have been one.
This edition is probably the most unintentionally funny piece of tv I've ever seen.
Maybe one of the other commenters has mentioned it already but Bradley Walsh tracked the turkey family down some years ago & interviewed them about this episode, it's on youtube under the title "Bradley Walsh visits the Johnson family from the infamous Family Fortunes "Turkey" episode".
5:57 A perculator used to be a common way of making coffee. You put the grounds in a little container above the water, and you can boil it on the stove, or plug it in if it's electric.
There are still somd of them around in some places, but it's not as common as it used to be.
I have seen the turkey clip for years, never saw the full episode. My cheeks hurt now
In 2008, Dustin the Turkey represented Ireland at Eurovision. So there's a famous Irish "person" who is a turkey!
Honestly, the guy was just a bit of an idiot. He offered to pay £100 for Central to not show the episode as he thought it made him and his family look bad. They told him the episode cost £38,000 to produce.
You must have a look at Bob's Full House. Bob Monkhouse is a legendary comedian and game show host.
Well that was fun! I’m just about old enough to remember the Max Bygraves era of the show (Les Dennis is my host) but have never seen this episode. Although I have seen the ending several times on outtake shows. I wonder if he meant to say “trunks” and then got flustered. Max did extremely well keeping it together…and was anyone else yelling “Frank Carson” at the screen during the Irish round or just me!?
I used to love it when Les Denis hosted this show as like Bob Monkhouse at the shows start, they were both comedians and much funnier with the contestants. Max Bygraves, although hugely popular with the public, was a singer/entertainer and the comedy seemed a bit forced at times. It was great when a contestant said a particularly stupid answer like ' a Turkey' and in amongst the audience laughter Les says "if it's up there - I'LL give you the money".
Considering Terry Wogan was the top answer on the Irish question, you should try looking at one of his episodes of "Blankety Blank" at some point, which he was originally the host of in the UK. It was pretty much their version of "Match Game", but with a lower budget.
les Denis is my favourite host on this show.

Supposedly the story behind this is that he heard one of the other family members mentioning "Turkey" as he walked on, and this got it stuck in his head. And instead of "something you take to the beach", he answered "someWHERE you GO to the beach" with the answer that was in his head.

Hi there Taffe316, been watching your “Reacts to” Videos for sometime. I really enjoyed the ones reliving Robot Wars a few months ago, as it was one of my favourite shows! At 21:33 “oh boy” as in, surely this episode can’t get any more funny / unusual than this…. Oh gosh if this reacts to was live, it’s going to get funnier - a WHOLE (turkey) lot funnier 😂

I feel sorry for the woman who won the record player. She must have been the only person in Max's era that did not get one of Max's records to play on it. On second thoughts she may have been the lucky one.🤣
