      I agree with you 💯. I was able to depot the 6 pan ones (I needed to use heat) but the 10 pan one what I had to do was repress them. I scooped them out and repressed into pans. But just the “special” ones.

    I totally agree with your observation about designer handbag. If you don't like the shadow, you shouldn't force yourself to use it. In my university chemistry course we had lessons of ingredients in everyday consumer products and what does what. For 3 years we did experiments with everything we could get a hold of (makeup, skincare, haircare) and put those things through every machine we had access to. What we learned is that higher price about 40 percent of a time means lesser quality. The most drastic thing was a comparison between 300 Euro face cream and 3€ Lidl dupe. Almost all ingredients were the same, but Lidl cream ingredients were more active I think. Some of our class used for 3 months both (half face for each cream) and in all comparison photos a cheap cream won (everyone saw visible improvement).

    I think the hype for her palettes come from people used to mainstream brands being wowed by more textured/foiled shimmers and multichrome shades. Say what you will but PML was one of the first major brands to bring shades like that to the mainstream. Only issue is that indie brands have been cranking out shades like that with better formulas for even longer without charging an arm and leg for them.

    • @myaemmajade

      Yeah it really feels like indie shadows in a department store

    • @Cara-39
      @Cara-39 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree with this and I think the crazy price for a 10 pan palette also plays a part. The "expensive equals better quality" notion is pervasive and when the brand first launched, with the Mothership I, II & III palettes for $125 USD each, which was almost unheard of outside the also recently launched Natasha Denona palettes, with really artful packaging, from a well known and highly respected fashion/editorial MUA, the beauty community went nuts and the hype surrounding these palettes went through the roof. From then on, it was like nobody dared to express an opinion that wasn't some form of "these are the best shadows ever made & worth every penny" and those that did, like Kat, were told they didn't know how to apply eyeshadow, they were wrong and/or they don't know what good quality is. The PMG hype borders on fetishism and I personally agree with Kat; I don't think the formula is worth it. The shadows in my Mothership Subliminal I palette are dry and lackluster and the "special shades" don't have the high shine, one swipe full opacity as claimed, they need to be built up a lot. I bought it during one of her 30% off sales and I still feel it's overpriced; it's my biggest makeup regret. My Sydney Grace, Devinah Cosmetics, Give Me Glow and JD Glow shadows are much better formulas and significantly less expensive. I just don't like the path the beauty community has taken over the last few years, where anyone that doesn't share the opinion of the masses is attacked and makeup is no longer subjective but something everyone must agree on. Sorry for the long rant; I think the PMG line is completely overrated.

    • @han__nya
      @han__nya 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Cara-39 I find that the indie community is also experiencing that with multichromes. I own quite a few of them from multiple brands, and was "attacked" because I once said that black based multichromes are overhyped and gimmicky. Not to mention overpriced. You can easily reach that PMG ridiculous price point if you buy a bunch of multichromes that are priced 17-20 dollars each. So imo this issue permeates every level, including the indie community. No eyeshadow is truly worth 20 dollars, just like no palette is worth 125 dollars. Brands have been cranking up prices and selling the dream that these shades are "unique" and worth their price, when in reality it's often pigment that is sourced in countries that use slave and or child labour.

    • @Cara-39
      @Cara-39 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@han__nya I own many indie singles from multiple brands and while I don't wear multichromes, I do know how expensive they are. Whether something is worth the cost or not is also subjective; I personally don't think PMG products are worth the price but I'm clearly in the minority! It's not just the beauty community, mob mentality has permeated every aspect of life and those with different, dissenting or minority opinions are dismissed and/or verbally attacked. I'm not talking about opinions that are hateful, racist, misogynistic, violent or conspiracy theories; we need to push back on those ideas and we need to go back to respecting facts and evidence.

    People can’t disassociate the marketing hype and luxury packaging from the quality of the formula. I find it’s the same when people talk about restaurants. People conflate astounding decor and meticulously designed environments with good food. I absolutely appreciate beautiful interiors. But food is food. Same with packaging. I’m a designer and LOVE beautiful packaging. But the formula is judged for its performance, not for the product experience. Humans are weird man. I love how honest your reviews are. You’re consummately so pragmatic and authentic in your analysis

    • @balletlau
      @balletlau 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting viewpoint. Personally, I don't know anything about the marketing hype and the packaging doesn't really do it for me, but I do enjoy the formula of Pat McGrath shadows. Where I differ from many is that her "special shades" are not actually my favourite - I like her metallics, mattes and regular sparkles. I don't have any of her earlier releases though so it is possible the formula is better in more recent releases than earlier ones. Regardless, they probably aren't worth the price but I enjoy using the ones I have.

    • @jaycreswell7008
      @jaycreswell7008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I HATE the PM packaging. I can't open the lid far enough to let light onto the pans or actually make any use of the mirror whatsoever, it feels like the lid is going to break at the hinge and the laquered black, fingerprints, such that it constantly looks dirty.
      It doesn't feel lux to me, just poorly designed. But I'm in a little minority on this and if you love it or even like it, that's cool too.

    • @suhseal
      @suhseal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@balletlau I have 2 of her mothership palettes and they’re both … ehhh to me. I also have maybe 6 of her six pans and there are consistency problems with some formulas being absolutely lovely and some having poor pigment, patchiness or blending into muddy nothing. But I actually do enjoy both her celestial divinity and odyssey palettes. All the shades in those are a joy. Across the board with ALL of her palettes I have the same complaint: not enough mattes (like give us some dang transition shades to go with those beautiful shimmer!). So I often drag out my viseart or Natasha mattes to pair with pat’s palettes. And Kat is dead on. I don’t really like pat’s special shades either! They’re so gritty and she even had to come out with that primer pen stick thing in order to make them adhere properly. For $129 palette, you’d expect it to work without extra tricks. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have the huetopia which I believe is her latest mothership and it still has that gritty tons of glitter fall-out issue. Though I do think her mattes are getting better. Why do I keep buying them??? 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m working on correcting that collector mentality

    • @suhseal
      @suhseal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jaycreswell7008 I agree on some level. It’s too much and not my aesthetic either. In the end besides the metal plate it still feels like plastic. I wonder if it’s the generous mirror inside that gives it heft. I tend to like the aesthetics of Charlotte Tulbury, Lilah B, or Victoria Beckham beauty for their packaging aesthetics more. And the slim leather like beautiful packaging adept cosmetics has adopted is quite pleasing too. And not on the luxury side of packaging, but whomever the graphic designer/illustrator is on kaleidos’ team needs to be given some serious awards. It’s by far the most creative and whimsically balanced aesthetic I’ve seen yet in the makeup world.

      Me too! I have two PMG palettes and honestly if I'm looking for special shades I wouldn't consider grabbing the palettes at all, I'd go for my indie shadows. But if I need a look that I know will just be pretty (not taking too many risks!) I use my PMG palettes and use the non-special shimmer shades. The only time I use the special shades is for an inner corner or maybe a topper if I've accepted that I'll spend 5 minutes trying to clean up the fallout afterwards haha

    I got into makeup 'officially' just a few weeks ago. Bought my first eyeshadow palette (Sashimi City from Kaleidos), and started looking at the Pat Mcgrath palettes when they went on sale a week or two ago. The main things that stopped me were A) I can't justify more than one and don't have the first clue of which one I would want, and B) If they are *the* best eyeshadows on the market then it's a dreadfully expensive habit to pick up. If the best version of something is unnatainable and I'll never have something as good ever again, would I really want to know?
    This now adds C) they're probably more overhyped than I had even considered.

    I absolutely love PML large mothership palettes. I do agree the 6 pan ones aren’t that great because she doesn’t put her best formulas in those. Her quads are great too though. I do have to admit, the first time I bought a 10 pan mothership (divine rose I), I swatched it and was like wtf and returned it. Then I watched a lot of videos from people who know how to use the formulas with natural bristle brushes and I went and bought one again. Haven’t looked back since. Completely in love. It took me some practice. They are artistry formulas so they can be used all over the face. The shadow in the upper left hand corner can also be used as highlight all over the face and some of the 10 pan palettes with the pinks and peaches, mauves etc, those shadows also double as blushes. It truly is in using the correct brushes and correct techniques so I totally understand why some people just don’t fall in love because they can’t get the techniques down. And honestly, if you bought bronze seduction when it first came out…. It’s expired by now. So they won’t perform the best I’m sure after they are like 3-4 years old. Just like Huda, love some of hudas palettes but after a few years, they really do expire and don’t perform well. I’m super interested in seeing how the depotting goes!

    Its a great idea, I just couldn't bring myself to destroy the packaging of these. Thats probably why I thought long and hard about my first Mothership palette purchase. It had to be versatile and the one I thought I'd wear the most - Divine Rose, Mothership 7. I do agree that some Indie brand shadows are way more special than the Pat Mcgrath ones. Looking forward to the next one.

    I frequently don't agree with you but on PM I am 100% with you. The mattes are very average, dry and patchy. The special shades are pretty to swatch but an absolute mess to use for a very aversge result compared to much better priced, more impressive "special" shades from any number of other brands.
    I am not a fan of Kaleidos either but I agree totally about PM.

I have mothership 7, 8 and 9 right now, and they are set up the same way. It's different between cool and warm toned but they all have that first light shimmer shade, they all have a sparkly gold, the 3 mattes, the duo-chrome and the metallic reddish shade.

    At higher price points you have to be really careful about color stories before purchase and know your style and what you’re going to use and not use.
    Overall, I enjoy my PML shadows and use them just as much as my other palettes. Divine Rose 1 is gorgeous and a palette that I use once a week. The Iconic Illumination quad I used on my wedding day. The packaging is over the top luxe and I know that’s where most of my money is going, but that’s part of the experience. My only real complaint, is the fall out w PML. It’s a lot more than most and super annoying.

      I am with you! Im middle aged, I love makeup, but I’m not here for glitters or foiled shadows that don’t flatter my skin and fallout all over my face as the day or night goes on. If drug store brands can release nice palettes that flatter, give me what I need for a complete look, and last for a bargain- luxury brands really have no excuse and blaming consumers for lack of skill is pretty low brow.

    I agree with your overall take on PMG eyeshadows. I have two of the palettes in this video, Mothership V and Sublime Bronze Ambition, and IMO they are just not worth the money. I don't use them very often because they're very fussy. The "special shades" in particular need a glitter primer IMO and still have quite a bit of fallout. I really enjoy my PML quads and Mothership IV Huetopian Dream but they are all more recent releases. Her matte formula is one of my favourites but it seems to be quite a different experience to the earlier palettes. I agree on the chunkiness of some of the special shades. I think PML, like Natasha Denona, can be quite overhyped. Each brand and formula has its flaws but with the price point those flaws can be hard to swallow. For me, though, the PML special shades are easier to access than Indie ones, so a carefully curated selection of PML is preferable price wise. Looking forward to the ND edition.

    I will say as an actual beginner PMG (also got 50% off cause I stacked discounts) has been really good for me cause…the special shades I can just stick my finger in and it’s done; I don’t know how to use glitter glue and I always forget to do my eyes first 😅. So honestly - whoever is saying youre an amateur at makeup, naaahhhh. The only reason why I love em is I can’t make anything else look that good 😅, I’m also not someone to try out different brands- when I was buying it I just wanted something that I knew was probably going to be good.
