Unless you are in the industry for a time and understand how these things work, it's hard to critic unless you know the facts. Budgets are often insanely tight, Marvel/DC also has a history of underpaying an industry that is already underpaid. The profit margin for the vfx industry is around 5%. They fudge the numbers a bit to make it more otherwise you literally could not have a working fx house period. So the production is paying these guys less then 5% more then it does to make the shot as cheaply as possible. Then they claim they want this very cheap specific thing in the bidding, use words like 'this is a throw away shot, that we don't care about, just make it super cheap', thinking they can then put more of the budget on the 'money shots. Then when the time comes they change the shot, screw up the camera work, or blocking, etc and expect post to be able to roll with it. All this adds days to a shot that say is already bid as a 3 day shot. So before they even begin the work the shot is already gonna be over budget just in the plate cleanup, matchmove, etc. Then they change the direction three times, and now a shot that is bid by them claiming they will 'not be picky' is over a week over, and they are still asking for changes, so then modeling/anim throws something 'rough' to get the buyoff, and then they are told to just 'run with the rough anim, blend it in comp'. And now some lighter, and then a compositor are told the shot is already over budget, just do what they can in half a day, because the fx house already paying for this shot out of their own money, ie the artists are not just working for free, but are effectively paying the production house for the clean, etc. And now some lighter has to render something to the comp and get it right first try, and without any time to do it properly, and then the compositor is handed some complete crap and asked to 'can you help save this one and do some magic', and while the comp artist has managed to do 'magic' in the ten previous shots, this time he doesn't have a clue how to make it work, and given he also has one try, he puts out what he can', and everyone from the fx house, to the production, to the director is so over the shot by now, they just approve whatever, because they know they are already over budget, and they still have the big shots to do , and they don't want to take money away from the bit fx shots which are also under bid, and they have no idea how to even do those shots in the budget being asked for. Sorry to rant, but honestly, you're right. But it isn't because some artists usually is not capable, more often then not, the artists are fine, it's the fact that tv is now being asked to act like a big budget movie, with the budgets that don't match, and this is what you get.... you have shows like Game Of Thrones spending $15 million on a episode for fx, and now some marvel show is trying to compete with a budget that is 1/20th the size. And audiences now expecting ever tv show to look like Game Of Thrones, etc. It isn't ever going to be what you see in film, because they simply do not have the time, nor the budget to do that. (Again unless you are one of the very few shows that decide to spend a crap load on each episode). So they trade shots like this, for say the shots that are in the trailer looking good enough to attract people to watch the show.... It's about making money, not about making good vfx sadly...
