When the cow paths and game trails are on six foot contours, it’s steep. Chukar and Hun populations will always thrive in such wild places. I absolutely love hearing the birds flush and the squeak of chukar and the chirp of Huns. Eric, you have discovered a lifetime of great experiences. Thank you for bringing these videos to us!

Walking back to elk camp, and enjoying the bench stroll, getting ready to drop another 1000 ft to the river, I just about stepped on a dozen chuckers a few year ago! Now that is a thrill. Great working dogs, and a must in that country!

I had a time in Nevada where I was going up a ridge in light snow. I ended up going back down the ridge on the way to the truck and noticed tracks on the way down where the chukar moved out of my way and then came back around behind me to avoid one of my dogs !

I see the chukar/hun mix once every few years. Usually in places where birds are getting pressured enough that coveying back up becomes difficult and in colder parts of the year, they need 5-8 birds minimum to survive the night. I think it's survival based more than anything.
PS - That is pretty impressive shooting especially if you're not used to shooting those birds. So many people shoot over the top because most birds are dropping serious elevation when they fly away from you. Great video as always!

Great videos Eric, thanks for sharing. It's been quite a few years since I did that so I'm living vicariously through you experience. It's called Hells Canyon for good reason. A green unbroke rambunctious dog can easily go over one of those cliffs chasing birds on the rise. Do your dogs have any health issues with cheat grass, it looks like it's all over the place.

Had to tell one more of my chukar hunting stories here, I have so many great ones.
Me and 2 other buddies were hunting on a private 6K acre cattle ranch and the rancher was guiding us with his German wire haired dog. Us three hunters were walking three a breast on the hillside with the dog out front working out in front of us and the rancher was behind us controlling his dog with a whistle and verbal commands. The dog then went on scent and disappeared over the edge of the hillside and disappeared out of site of all of us. The rancher had to follow his dog down the terrain to retrive the dog. The low man hunter followed the rancher down to help find the dog. Long to short the dog loved to chase porcupines and ran into one on this particular hunt. Took the rancher and the other 3rd hunter well over an hour to pull hundreds of quills out of that dog's mouth. When the rancher was asked, "Well that will be the last time that dog goes off chasing porcupines!" the rancher replied, "It's the third time in 2 years ol Jube has done that, I am afraid he'll will never learn." Hearing that dog help out in pain as those quills were pulled out is a sound I will never forget. Keeping dogs close is an hard thing to do when they have rabbit in their blood.
    Bon Apettito!

Your dogs are superb as is your shooting! What do you use to keep the paws on your dogs from cutting on that type of terrain?

Dogs must have good feet or they are done in a couple days. For some of my dogs I use tough foot and conditioning.

Glad I stumbled upon your channel. Looks like some great content and good dog work. What distance were you shooting those chukars at on average?

Thanks! The distances were all over the place. Some flushed at 10 yards and some at 50+.

@@ericforrester1 that’s great. With such varying ranges what choke did you decide to go with? I’m a fan of LM for a do it all but with that wind and distance combined I feel like that might be to open.

I went with modified. I could have gone lighter in some areas. The variation in distance was all about how much pressure the birds had gotten.

@@ericforrester1 Modified is always a good choice when you might need to take longer shots but don’t want to destroy a bird up close. Thanks for sharing👍🏻
