    Eric - I don’t think anyone who hasn’t done this before can truly appreciate your opening “slog of a climb” up to your dog on point and the shear horror we feel when the GPS goes beep and points straight up hill. Listening to you breathe, watching you hold your hand up as if your trying to get the word “whoa” out under all the gasping and then seeing you go to your knees after the shots is what chukar hunting life is all about. I LOVE IT, you captured the true essence of what it really is like to hunt chukar out here in the west. It’s painful but the effort is worth it. Thanks again for taking us along. Our upland season wraps up this Monday here in Utah - it’s bitter sweet that it’s ending, but 6 months is a long season and me and my dogs need a short break. We’ll be ready for September to roll around again.

      Thanks Jeff. Your reaction is what I hope for. Its cool that you totally understand what was going on in that situation. It’s impossible to capture the entire experience but i hope to at least give people a taste of it. Good luck with the rest of your season and thanks for the comment. 👊

    Aint no party like a valley quail party! They're my personal fave by a pretty wide margin. Watching a patch of rosehips explode like a landmine when a flushing dog roots them out is a religious experience!

    One day we were fortunate enough to harvest valley and mountain quail and chukar. We pan fried them all with equal seasoning and care. All were amazing, but the chukar on a blind taste test to 6 people came out on top.

    Eric, this video is one of the best that really shows all the different landscapes and pitches that these birds inhabit. What is really impressive is how well both you and your dogs, as flat landers really adapt quickly and successfully hunt these birds. That last area had it all in my mind. Plenty of mature cheat grass, with greenup undeneath and a lot of bunchgrass too. Couple that with all the cliffs and loose rock and that is ideal chukar turf. As you gain confidence in your dogs I hope to see you circle as far around as you need to so you can get below their points. This will help you get the birds to fly around you and with how good of a shot you are, you will get a lot more birds. It sure has helped me a lot these past couple of seasons. I am looking forward to Part II!

    Yet another great video Eric . We do not have public land in the UK but I am lucky enough to have permission to hunt red grouse for a couple of days each season.Its not easy as 6/7 hours of hard walking usually brings about 6 birds.I shoot an under and over and when grouse shooting the gun stays in its case until my Vizsla locks on point.There is then a bit of a scramble to get loaded ready for the bird. I do lose out on the odd chance hunting this way but I prefer to do this rather than dealing with a strap. After grouse the pheasant season kicks in although covid19 restrictions pretty well destroyed the pheasant season this time around.

  • @shaft3500

    Great content right here... As for slings you might try the Browning all season web sling. The length is easily adjustable which makes is easy to have less length to flop around and jam you up. I have one on my ethos Cordoba after using several of these same slings over the years on my duck guns. They used to make them with a plastic length adjuster piece that was really handy, and now they are metal adjusters, but you can still use the sling in a backpack style which might come in handy in that steep chuckar country... The slings are definitely nice for dog handling with autoloaders... Anyways just thought I would share, keep up the good work!

    I saw in your Part 2 video in the comments that you use an IC choke and 7 1/2 size shot shells. Here's a suggestion from a 30 year Chukar hunter that will help you drop the birds DOA. I use a Modified Choke with Heavy field loads of 1 3/8 oz #5s over 90 percent of my birds are dead when they hit the ground. The #5 shot will penetrate way deeper than 7 1/2s by a huge margin resulting in downed birds. The load will not tear up the birds at all plus you can make 60 yard kills all day long provided you can hit them. Once you try them I don't think you'll go back to small shot. Great video's.

    • @ericforrester1
      @ericforrester1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice, I think you make a good point. That video is from last year and I have since switched to a modified choke and #6 shot. I feel like I had better results. I will have to try #5 next year👍

    • @crowman5936
      @crowman5936 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ericforrester1 Tried the #6 shot in the heavy field loads (I reload) and wasn't happy with the 6s. Still had about a 50 to 60 percent DOA with the 6s but when I went to the 5s it was 90+ percent DOA. As you painfully know a bird can sail 200 to 400 foot in elevation (always down) that you or your dogs have to hike. Better they bounce once or twice when they hit the ground and stick there. Try a box of each and make your own conclusion to the better choice. Good Luck.

      @@ericforrester1 I hunted the Steck Park area back in the 70s, no dog, usually jump 2-300 birds a day. On a week long trip we would take the reloader and a sack of shot, wads, powder and primers and load shells each night. It was epic.
