Considering how much media this filter holds the price is crazy low.....
This is a good quality, well made and 'simple' aquarium canister filter which will hold 6kg Biohome Ultimate'. Instead of farting about making the filter link to WiFi or pointless phone apps Aquael have made an external filter which is is an honest high capacity, easy to access external canister filter which has the same capacity for media as the Eheim 1200XL (which is much more expensive).
Given the price, flow rate and media capacity I rate this very highly.

    WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE?
If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on
A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
Avoid using any products which claim to remove, detoxify or bind ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as they will have a noticeable starving effect on the bacteria which will manifest as an inability to achieve a full cycle due to a low population of bacteria on a starvation diet.
Let Nature do the work and as long as you have a suitable sized, well set up filter there is no reason why a full cycle won't be achieved.
You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that the recommendations are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.

Hey there. I was wondering if you ever did any "pimp my filter" on any pressurised pond filters??

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@krisdwitt A pressure pond filter is generally a very dirty environment for any good porous media so it's not something I'd waste good media in. If you can swap out plastic balls for Alfagrog then that works well in muck but generally the best place for pressure filters is as the mechanical side of a pressure filter and shower filter combo for best results with the shower being filled with the better media. Pressure filter would be the main mechanical filter followed by the shower doing the main biological filtration.

So, basically, it's a simpler version of the Aquael Ultramax. Even the baskets seem exactly the same. Richard's solution of putting a foam on top of the stack would not be necessary for the Ultramax, that has a top mesh cover to keep media from being sucked into the pump. It's more expensive though, but to me, worth every penny, it still performs like a champ. Bought it after watching the Pondguru review, thanks again Richard, you're the best!

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I absolutely agree with the anoxic type of filtration he is pushing on the channel as I've heard of that being done way back in the 80's for koi ponds in Italy. The idea seemed to go dormant before being rediscovered recently and is gaining worthy popularity. I like anything which is natural which is why I got involved with the Biohome - it basically does that on a smaller scale with each pellet being a miniature deep sand bed.
Unfortunately Novak seems to have a real bug up his ass about biohome and tells viewers that porous media only lasts 6 months and needs to be recharged / regenerated with bleach and I can't ever condone such willful sabotage - that sort of information could be responsible for 10's of thousands of fish deaths if people follow it. As people in the public eye channel owners have a real responsibility to put out sensible and helpful information.
However, the anoxic idea he is bringing back is a good one and it definitely works - I'd never recommend that anyone boycott a channel just for some dodgy information as a watching, thinking mind should see the errors and make their own judgement so obviously I wish the guy the best of luck with the channel. If the ideas on anoxic filtration expressed and demonstrated there help people then it has great value and should be highlighted - likewise bad information and willful sabotage should also be highlighted.
Basically whatever works for someone is all good and there are always multiple ways to achieve a goal. Nobody will ever be 100% correct and that's why it is so important for viewers to listen to lots of different opinions and make their own judgement about what is best for them and their fish.

I've been looking at the biomaster 600, fluval 407, and this filter just caught my eye. I'd be super greatful for any advice on a great filter in the $200-$300 usd price range.

    Pondguru, Merry Xmas!
I would like to suggest that you make reviews on the different all pond solutions' Boyu fish tanks and their overhead filtration systems that appear to be underrated, however, highly efficient IMO.
I love that limey accent! 😆

    Hi
I was just wondering if when you build your waterfall cascade you use a little bit of cement here and there will it be harmful to the fish in the future, many thanks Ian

Am i Correct in thinking a deep soil and sand substrate would also help process waste? as well as an ef2000 on a 400 litre tank, i used about 5kg of lava rock?

Hi, love your videos! As a shooter, fisherman and fish keeper myself I think your channel is one of the best around. I have an Eheim pickup 160 on my 74l tank couple up with a sping filter driven by a pump, how can I mod my pickup to biologically filter aswell as mechanical, as its just one large sponge inside? Hi, I bought biohome ultimate 500gram "repacked" from a local seller in Malaysia using online platform. I am assure that the seller sold me a genuine product of biohome because the seller is considered as well known aquarium supplier in our local market whom doing aquarium business for many years. My question is: currently biohome product is considered as must have filter media especially among amateurs and professionals in Malaysia, how to identify a fake biohome product? In Malaysia the product is being sold in smaller quantities "repacked" packaging as needed by aquarist. Hope you can explain and looking forward for your anwser. Thank you.

Hi pondguru! Well I have a doubt. I remember you said in one of your videos about baking the media to re-use it. I'm in that process now, but I can't remember in which video, so I need to know how long and which temperature should I go! Always check your videos to pimp my filters! Best regards

pondguru, can i put biohome ultimate in the bottom of my 75 gallon discus tank and cap it with sand, would that help with the bio load, i keep my nitrates below 10ppms for the discus, just would like to do less water changes. i use/ro di water and add the minerals back in. would this give me an extra day or two on my nitrates going up. i aslo have the biohome ultimate in my 2 eheim 2217s which filter the tank. thank you Joe H. I have a pressure filter for my fish pond, it currently has two trays of plastic media at the bottom. Should I change it to the Biohome media or something similar? Help appreciated. Great video 👍

You really know he has no love for plastic media in a canister filter , not even God to get a full cycle using it & that is why God will only use Biohome Ultimate or in a pond he will get that special sand and if you want to see how crystal clear a pond can get , do you ? 😎

Wheyhey good to see you uploading dude.
Question i followed your videos and I had a slight issue, I had media get sucked up from the bottom section into the impeller making a tappi g that I could not get rid of. It just stopped after a couple months.
