    A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
    Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome filter media does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
    Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres

    You can also buy a dedicated 'tee' and give, for example, a second container with a sponge next to it - in series, then the problem of height is eliminated. You can also buy a dedicated rain shower. A lot of possibilities for simple configuration are given by these filters and quite a large total filrration capacity, not inferior to the medium-sized "cascade" filters.

      That is good to know and it enables the end user to set up something which is tailored to their tank so it's something I'm in favor of.

    Looks like it would be a great secondary filter for added circulation in a well stock and already filtered cichlid tank

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it's not really going to be one for a lovely aquascaped tank since it looks quite monstrous compared to most other internal filters but for functionality it ticks the boxes.

      When I set off on the journey of making this series I wanted to provide an information base for anyone who owns or is interested in buying specific filters and I assumed that would entail anyone watching one or two videos.
      It always bemuses me why you'd watch more than 1 or 2 but I'm very grateful that you do since it helps to keep the videos visible in the TH-cam feed.
      Best of luck with your tank.

      Thanks for that - the goal of this series is education and while it may have consumed thousands of hours of my life it is definitely worth it from my perspective as there is nothing else like this series for filters on TH-cam..
      To be fair sometimes I wish I'd never embarked on such a venture but I think it has value as it is exactly what I would look for when searching TH-cam.

    Had the 500 one on my 56L for couple of years until upgraded my tank to the 200L tank with Aquael Canister tank. Loved the Turbo500, it's in the garage, in the clean bag ready to be pulled out in emergency ;)
    I did use filter moss on the bottom of the Media container to polish the water too - did a great job :)
    I do like Aquael products a lot

    Good to see you again Rich. Looks pretty good to me although it's quite a sizeable thing to have in a relatively small tank. Would certainly be good as an extra in a large tank, and also if your canister fails. I hope your ribs are feeling less painful now too buddy .

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, while it isn't the best looking filter in the world it is a brute which is function over form and considering that the container(s) don't hold much media the chance of a full cycle is slim.
      The ribs are healing quite well and I can sleep much better on a night now so it's all good.
      I hope you're keeping well, man. I've been spending most of my free time in the garden and it's looking well. Just waiting for the tomatoes to start turning red since some of them have crazy bunches of tomatoes hanging on them.

      I've not done that filter yet but as far as I can see it is a simple foam filter which uses a central perforated pipe which goes through the foam. If that is the case then the filter probably can't be upgraded usefully.

      (my other channel) The water is definitely healthier, a bit clearer but it is still colored.
      However, recently I've been in contact with a friend who has a trout farm in Yorkshire and he is prepared to take all the carp and sturgeon (the bottom feeders which mess up the clarity of the clay lined pond) and take them to a private lake for safe relocation.
      This year the spring water flowing onto the pond has been increased so that's also helped with the health and clarity of the water.
      It is all heading in the right direction but until the huge bottom feeders get reduced it is probably not worth making a video on since the camera doesn't pick up how it has cleared very well.
      When I swap out all the bottom feeders for trout it will be crystal clear again.

    Aquael's unironically good, and parts are pretty much compatible across all products, without any strange shaped, over engineering or bullshit alike, the only gripe I have with them is pump longevity, and I mean LONGEVITY so that the equipment outlives any aquarium or repurposing. I could've bought Ultramax 1500 or 2000 for my 114 L aquarium but I chose Fluval 307 instead, because of how paranoid and demanding I am about reliability nowadays.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a good way to look at things and I'm very much of the same mindset.

    600 gram hmm so going with your own calculations = 60 litres .. but it's way to big for a 60 litre tank ... so I guess the sponge comes into it .. I'm confused ...

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's why toward the end of the video I explain that it is unlikely to achieve a full cycle in a decent sized tank where it won't be too big. In anything under 100 litres this filter in the present form is going to be way too big to be practical.
      The flow would also be too much for smaller tanks.

  • @lilpwnige
    @lilpwnige 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Since you can't upgrade the pump, I would suspect adding another container could also hurt the flow quite a bit.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Adding any more containers will impact the flow a bit but water can flow freely around the Biogravel so any drop in flow wouldn't be noticeable.

  • @jasoncarty2175

    It's big and bulky,would do a great job tho on a standard 125l aquarium.👍

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Pretty much, yes - that's the tank size range I'd put this filter in although due to the lack of media space (unless you add another container) it would be unlikely to deliver a full cycle for a tank that size.
      The problem is that in any smaller tank this filter is going to look gigantic, lol

    Hello from Russia. I have such a filter for 200 liters of aquarium as a mechanical filter in addition to an external filter. I think it is not advisable to use it for biology. Instead, I filled the canister like that. There is a layer of ceramic rings below to break up the flow. There is a medium-porous sponge above it. There is a fine-pored sponge above it. There is a sintepon over it. There is a homemade grid on top for breaking the flow. There are a lot of golden fish and catfish in the aquarium. I clean the filter once a month. The power is adjusted to a minimum. The water is crystal clear.

      Assuming that the tank is a standard rectangle design it will be fine as far as flow goes.
      However, the filter does not hold much media (very few internal filters do) so it would still be better for decent sized tanks if you're wanting to achieve a full Natural cycle.
