    Thanks for that wisdom, I’m over 50 and have got gallons of water in my mouth through the years. I think I was using too short of a hose. I also grew up in the country and swam in stock ponds so aquarium water is not the worst water I’ve had in my mouth.😁

    • @strcat666
      @strcat666 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You don't need to put the tube in your mouth at all.
      Close the low end perhaps with your thumb.
      Then put the top end of the tube into the water.
      Fill with enough water that you can get the water over the tank and below the water level.
      Then open the bottom end.
      If you did it correctly with no air in the top of the hose the weight of the water below the water line will pull water up and over, making a siphon.

    Do Kuhli Loaches ever damage the sand cap by burrowing?🤔

    • @codmandchill6714
      @codmandchill6714 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Kuhli will burrow into the sand if only the tank is sparse with no hiding spot. Will not do it with heavily planted tank. I got rabbit snail way more sand burrowing than the kuhli n my substrate doing just fine. Of course they wouldn't burrow into aerobic layer of the substrate and will not go inside anaerobic layer.

      @@codmandchill6714 Thanks for answering. I've heard about them tunneling but didn't know they only do it when there's very little cover. Also, I imagine developed plant roots hold everything in place and discourage them from digging?

    The flexibility of the hose is SO important. Ive had hoses that are almost rigged, and short, so you kinda wedge it into the bucket, but sometimes they whip out and spray tank water everywhere... How hard is it to make a flexible rubber hose?

  • @Heartshackles
    @Heartshackles หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I don't know how Father Fish had the sixth sense that at least I really needed this video. I tried one of those pump hoses and just got mad at it and chucked it across the room because the pump is so hard to use because my hands are not strong at all, and it also didn't work one bit. Never got water in my mouth, but also not really a siphoning effect in the hose with that one. Need to just get a nice piece of hose from the garden or hardware store that's suitable for aquarium use and that'll do it. God bless the fish father for sharing his knowledge here on youtube for all to see.

Oh wait did i see you gravel vacing your substrate father fish you know that a no-no but in reality there is a lot of mulm that builds up around the base of the plant that's buried in the substrate in tanks thats been setup a year or longer.

    I don't really like putting the hose into my mouth. So what I do is put an extra 6 inches or so of the hose into the tank letting it fill with water. After that I put my thumb on the bucket end of the hose and pull some of the hose out of the tank starting the siphon after removing my thumb.

    Does the outside have to be below the top of the tanks water level or below the bottom of the tanks water level?

    • @strcat666
      @strcat666 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Top water level. It is the weight of the water that allows the water to flow.
      Just like in a stream, Just a little drop off and water flows.

    I started a 60l tank and bought a waterfall sponge filter, a bunch of very nice plants, nice natural rocks and a relatively thick gravel base. I also bought 12 neons, 3 Corydoras and 6 Pearl Danio, all happy, not over feeding, good light for the plants etc. It's been 2 weeks now and everything is great, maybe? After watching Grandfather Fish, I started to worry about my substrate. Should I back up and redo it? Everything seems to be going so well, but I'm in it for the long game. I live next to a clean creek so can I add something natural to my exsiting setup to make it work long term?
