Thank you for this info. I can’t find many videos showing and explaining what different types of plant damage looks like and the causes. This was so nice to see the close ups of what to look for.
I like those sprayers as well. Have you tried clove oil with water in a spray bottle? It numbs insects to death and it's organic. Also works on spider's, roaches, ants.
Health food stores, I make it strong 10 drops or more depending on size of sprayer. I learned this from an orchard, clove was the only ingredient I could buy that they used on there trees to kill pests. I've been using ever since.
@@shirleywilhelm1495 what are the ratios ? 10 drops to how much water ? How often do you spray your plant ? Do you rinse it after ? Thanks for the tip . I’m dealing with spider mites on my new Calatheas .
It's good to be proactive. Bugs and plants will always be a thing. I ordered some beneficial mites (if they survived the winter storm in the delivery truck) and will let those guys do their work this winter.
I use 7th generation free and clear dish soap made from plant derivatives or something and an old makeup brush to clean them throughly. It has never damaged any plant I have used it on. I love it.
Thank you for sharing, my plants are dealing with some type of mite that leaves no webbing... How do you keep your plants healthy during winter? Do you turn on the heater, remove them away from windows? I have some plants that need to stay on my windowsill and it's making me nervous as it's getting colder.
Yes, we run our furnace pretty much until March now lol Somedays here in Saskatchewan it will get down to the -30C range. I do absolutely nothing with my plants other then set up a humidifier if it gets too low. All my windowsill plants remain on the windowsill. Even my plants (ficus elastica) near our back door gets bursts of cold air and it is fine. Now I know certain pla to don't tolerate those types of changes so just do some research on the plants you have and relocate if necessary. Where are you located?
@@EverythingPlants I am actually in Texas, so not as cold as where you are but I’m worried it will snow again or just get too cold. 98% of my plants are Hoyas. For me anything below 50° F is cold lol but I know at night it does get down to the 30s
Thanks for the video. I just went to check a couple of my plants 🧐I put them in front of my led grow light bulb and sure enough…on my thornless crown of thorns, tiger tooth aloe and I’m sure many more…I’m going to spray leaves with water to start. What about neem oil spray will that work? Do you have two products by Safer or just one?
As far as I know you can use neem to spray for mites, but I know there are some plants that you shouldn't use it on, which I can't remember. I don't have much experience with neem oil, so I can't say whether I would recommend it or not. I have two safers products, yes. The insecticidal soap and then insecticide....different ingredients. I have been trying to use the soap one to see how it responds to pests. I used to use the insecticide as a preventative, but it sounds like some bugs can become resistant to it.
I think I may have had/maybe still it on my Hoya wayetti. I cut off the leaves with lots of dots and then cleaned each leave with alcohol and soapy mixture. Then safer’s soap. I’m hoping it was an overreaction and not scale but I guess a person can’t be too careful, right? Now I’m just waiting to see if anything happens.
I am not familiar with this brand at all. I did look it up and it says it is safe for houseplants. I would maybe try it on one leaf before you do the whole plant.
Thsoe holes on the pothos, what are they ? I have those on mine and been going crazy trying to figure it out. Also my leafs seem like something is chewing them 😥
Can you buy the spray in the US? Or is there a US equivalent that you recommend? Do you prefer this to a neem oil? I’m new to plants, I think I have spider mites on my fishbone cactus, and I’m nervous about them spreading to my other plants. My infected plant is currently in my bathtub in quarantine.. lol
Hey Paige! I am almost positive you can buy it in the states. I don't use Neem oil mainly because I am not too familiar with it and I have heard that Canada doesn't get pure neem so it isn't usually effective. Safers End All or Doktor Doom houseplant spray
Do you find the insecticidal spray to work? Someone said that for spider mites in particular, you need to use a "miticidal" soap? I might have spealt that wrong lol! I personally haven't had issues with pests as 99% of my plants are in semi-hydro. When I first bring it home, I skip the quarantine and removed it from the pot and soil, soak it luke warm water with a little soap and attampt to get the clean enough. If I'm extra paranoid I use my alcohol, soap, water, neem spray on it before soaking. Then it goes into leca. I've seen the us of pest soaps from the store but I feel confused by them! It's chilly here to in Cochrane/Calgary! Brr
I think so. The issue with these types of sprays is that it needs to coat the bugs (contact spray). That's why it's super important to get under the leaves where most mites are. It's been a few days since spraying and I haven't seen any new webs yet. I used to strip and wash my plants off too, but with spidermites they can just blow in with open windows and doors in the summer and fall.....then multiply.
Yes, I do believe so. I read somewhere that in cooler regions they rest in the soil of the plant, but in warm regions they feed on the leaves year round.

The snow looks beautiful by the way. I haven't seen snow yet so it always look magical to me. 😄

Thanks Jeff for the great video. It’s just spitting snow here in New Hampshire.
Hello Maureen. I guess winter is here 😢
Every time I see a pest treatment vid, I get paranoid and check ALL my plants.
It's good to be proactive. Bugs and plants will always be a thing. I ordered some beneficial mites (if they survived the winter storm in the delivery truck) and will let those guys do their work this winter.
Now I know what to do with our shower we don't use. Great place to treat houseplants.
Looks cold. Brrr!
Thanks for the video!

Wow....thanks for this. I will definitely look this up and see if we have it in Canada.

doesn’t do anything for eggs at all…
This was very helpful, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I try to spray my plants as a preventative measure. It’s always best to try and stay ahead of an infestation.
Even spraying off the leaves with water is just good plant maintenance. Thanks for commenting!
Great video 😊
Thanks! 😊
This was super helpful, thankyou
You are welcome!
Do you think that a baking soda + Water or a Vinegar + water solution help in this as an alternate?
I wanna keep my plant off of synthetic chemicals.
Thank you for video!! 🌿🌱
Thanks for watching!!!
We've just had a few snow flakes, so far, here in Ottawa. 🥶 But it's always more fun with pets and kids! 😃
I agree lol
In a different video you had little bags of predatory mites that you hung on various plants. What is that product name? and where did you get it?
Koppert Canada is the company and swirski mites were the predatory bugs
Very informative! I hate spider mites as I've lost a couple of alocasias and calatheas because of them.
Aww...that sucks. They are one of the easier bugs to get rid ofnif caught early enough. Thanks for watching Garry.
Is Dawn soap the same as Dr. Bronners Castile Soap ?
No and in fact I don't use dish soap anymore....it can damage leaves. I use insecticidal soap from Safers to get rid of pests

Hi. The drip tray u have, is it a carboot tray?
It's an Elho square saucer. I bought it from Canadian Tire, but it looks like they don't carry it anymore.

Have you had any experience with scale?
Yes...once. It was on a ming aralia plant. It was really difficult to see them all and I was very new to plants. I panicked and threw it out 😅
