I am writing just to congratulate because yours are one of the most (if not the most) informative videos about retinoids I found on the web. I especially appreciated your matter of facts approach to the ordinary products. Thanks a lot, we need more contents like yours on line! Greetings from Italy
I think I’ve watched this video at least 10 times in the last year or so. It literally answers every question I’ve ever had in relation to The Ordinary and my journey with their retinol/retinoids(HPR). You’re incredible. Thank you!
You are amazing at explaining this because i am confused as hell about all this . I purchased the ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% in squaline . Ive never used a retinoid before . My skin is loving this and have had no reaction . I have quite sensitive skin with very slight rosacea on my cheeks. Its not bad , actullay it is more like high colouring on cheeks. The morning after I use this product i have zero redness and irritation . it actualy calms my skin ! i use it about 2-3 times a week . My question is when i finish the bottle do I go up to the Granactive Retinoid 5% in squaline ??
Goodness I bought all 3 and was so confused until I watched this. You should be a spokesperson for this brand. Great 👍 You definitely clarified things for me.
Hi Karen! Lovely video! I just want to point that Granactive retinoid is a retinoic acid ester, not a retinol ester; wich makes it quickier to get the job done because it doesn't have to convert to work (like retinol esters who needs 2 o more steps to convert into retinoic acid, losing efficacy). Once in the skin, Granactive starts working inmediately because of the retinoic acid receptors in our skin, so the time to achieve results is quicker (from 6 to 8 weeks). No miracles, but is quicker than retinol. To have an idea of how strong it could be, we can compare with a mix of both, retinoic acid and retinol (because that's what it becomes inmediately in contact with skin). As you say, the active ingredient is 10% of the total Granactive retinoid, so that's 0,5 total. Because it converts in both retinol and retinoic acid, the estimation of strength could be somewhere in between 0,10 and 0,40 of retinoic acid; wich makes it a potent member of the retinoids family. I might venture to say it's more potent that otc retinol products, with way more bennefits (much more stable to light/temperature, less prone to cause irritation, fastest to get to work...) For me, is the best retinoid on the market, even without the long term studies that retinol has since the 60's, this retinoid has been developed to take the crown of retinol. I've been using it for less than 6 months and I've been noticing major changes in my sking (even people around me). It would be lovely to see a Granactive 5% emulsion in the future! Regards from Spain!
@@raniaalazazi2758 yes! It's gentle enough. Don't stop if you peel in certain areas, it's normal at first, don's stop it! My mother has very sensitive skin and can tolerate it daily without problems. If in your case you experience redness or irritation, wait until your skin heals and use it every other day.
Happy anniversary! What a cute candle with your names on it, what a lovely idea. Another excellent video, Karen, I really enjoyed it. Your skin and hair look especially lovely at the moment, whatever you are using right now clearly works for you. I love the eye look as well.
Happy Anniversary 🌞💕 I use to have the 2% for my acne prone skin and some times my skin was more prone to acne when I used the2%...now, I start to used 5% a month ago and from the first application I new I have a winner for my acne skin(mature) I love the 5%👍 no irritated my skin, next morning I really like how my skin looks. This product clear my skin every time I use the 5%. And my pores are looks clean and clear from this product. And I will buy again. One more thing... I don't have to use night cream ...my combo skin is perfectly fine 👍 never looks better... Thank you Ordinary 💕🐰🐇
Hey.Hanna Augustyn..i also hv combo skin but now i hv acne holes which are deep i want to use 5% to peel my skin's first layer..should i go for it or not?
Shumaila Adeel Hi... I can tell you what I do 🙋 Morning I use Salicylic acid 2% from the Ordinary (amazing) by every 2evening I use Retinoid5% And because I have combination skin and this treatment has Squaline I don't have to use any cream, this is ok for my skin...but before I put Retinoid, first I use Niacinamide 10%...and this is all what I use...and my skin is clear like never before... less is better 😊 The Retinoid 5% is my favorite product from the Ordinary and my cleanser is from Hylamide : High-Efficiency Face Cleaner...this cleanser cleaning my face like nothing before.. perfect for big pores👍 Good luck 🙋😊
Hanna Augustyn hi there. I recently ordered 2% emulsion but they got my order wrong and sent me 5% squalane instead. They’re offering and exchange but I wonder if should just try the 5% if it’s better? But I’m a newbie with retinoids though I’ve been on Accutane before. Hope you can advise me.
I have been using a different brand with granactive retinoid and found that it took a good 4 months to start to see a result. No irritation at all (I started slow just in case) but now my skin feels the smoothest it has ever felt. I think it does work, just at a slower rate.
I don't think you should consider Dimethyl Isosorbide as a skin conditioner. It's mainly a solvent and penetration enhancer, it's actually often used in diesel fuel just for stabilization, although that doesn't mean its bad as a cosmetic ingredient. Its has been studied often as a penetration enhancer for pharmeceutical products, and its made from Sorbitol. If Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate is definitely weaker than tretinoin is difficult to say. The group that has to bind to the retinoic receptors in skin is unchanged, since in theory the hpr can bind directly to the retinoic receptors some experts believe results from HPR possibly could be directly compared to retinoic acid. Retinol is weaker since it needs conversion. But agreed, to know this for sure we do need more independant studies on HPR, thus far tretinoin is still the gold standard. It binds to all retinoic acid receptors in skin in contrast to adapalene for example.
Thank you Karen! I was waiting to see a review on this product. I am thinking I will try the Retinol 0.5 in Squalane. I had been using a product that had 0.3 Retinol but when I finished that decided to try the Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2% which I like but I felt it was lacking the oomph of my previous serum and now I know why. I did not realize that the HPR had so little research behind it and that the finding had more to do with irritation than efficacy. Thanks for all the time and research you put into these videos.
I've been using the 2% retinoid emulsion for 6 months with no issues. When I went to place another order, they were out of stock on all the 2%. I was curious anyway and already thinking I might graduate to the 5% in squalane. So I got it and surprisingly there has been a bit of a reaction. Their website indicates it's no to low irritation and that seems about right for what's happening. I've been having a slight itch. Nothing worrying, just enough to be annoying. Skin looks great, nothing is red or peeling... I just feel like ants are casually strolling across my face here and there. So I thought people might like to know. I think I'll start buffering it a bit until I get completely used to it.
Thank you so much for the really helpful info- I learn so much from you when you do these and it's massively helped me! I wish I could say it's saved me money but until I saw The Ordinary and watched your videos the closest I'd get to skincare was using random freebies that magazines gave away and occasionally going without anything when that ran out (then being confused when my dry skin started flaking!) I now not only have a game-plan on addressing my dry skin, I also have an extensive routine for aging and enough knowledge to not at all feel intimidated when faced with skincare assistants at cosmetic counters :)
Thank you for your informative videos. I have been studying the science of skincare for several years but your explanations make it so much easier. I have been doing DIY skiincare for 15 years. I have subscribed and enjoy every one of your videos.
When you use the Granactive retinoid 5% in squalene how do you layer it with other products? I know your supposed to go from water based products to oils, but I also thought you were supposed to use retinoids before moisturizers. My derm prescribed me tretinoin .1% right off the bat for my acne. She didn’t even have me build up a tolerance and my skin does not do well with it! I also do not like the price tag of the appointments to go back and get a less concentrated retin-a. So I tried the emulsion and my acne really did get better, so I’m moving up to the 5%. I’m just unsure which step it should be to get the most use from it. I have to use a moisturizer or my skin gets so dry. Thank you for all of the helpful information, especially with The Ordinary products!
Thank you, you are so informative! Love that you know your stuff and that you explain it to us in a way we can understand. I'm tempted to try this one now, when my advanced 2% is finished. xx p.s Hope you had a lovely Anniversary!
The first Vit A product that I used was the Advanced Retinoid 2% ( now Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion). I did experience peeling. I was rather crusty for a bit. Then again, it does have retinol. I like the way it feels. Maybe after this bottle, I'll try the 5%. My concern is that it will be too rich or not sink into my skin with the Squalane; especially if I want to use anything else at the same time. By the way, you do a lovely job at explaining things. There is so much to cover. It would be nearly impossible to get everything out in one video. So many things are dependent on other things to function this way or that. Plus, even if you were able to get everything into one video, how much could someone pay attention to or retain what was said? Probably not much. Also, happy anniversary! I just realized that mine is coming up. I would have forgotten. I'm so terrible!
PamMilly hi there. Did you end up getting the 5% in squalane? I ordered 2% Emulsion but was sent a wrong order, 5% instead. Would you say it’s better than the 2% Emulsion?
Hi Karen...Just found your channel...This was a great breakdown of products & ingredients...Lots of info...But...well done...I only wish Deciem would put out a 5% emulsion without the retinol...as squalane base doesn't agree with my skin...and I can't use retinol at all...Tretinion, (even buffered) doesn't agree with my skin either...I have however been using 2 retinyl palmitate high concentration products for over 15 years..It's the only form of retinoid I can tolerate....One serum base and the other cream base...both at 40,000 iu combined...along with a serum containing matrixyl synthe 6 / 3000 with argireline combined into one serum...Also using Dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline ((sepilift DPHP)) 3x a week...Having good results..but as you've said...It took over a year to see any results as retinyl palmitate is the weakest ester of them all...but, I must say...Well worth the wait..I'm going to be ordering the azelaic acid..alpha arbutin. I may also order the Survival 10....((the zero is too pink))... just for the anti oxidants...It sounds like a great formula..lSorry to hear about Brandon..such a talented man...Subbed U...Take care
You mentioned there that you’d suggest using the 2% retinoid in squalane with the 0.2% retinol. Do you think it would be okay to use the 5% Retinoid in Squalene with a 0.2% retinol? I’ve just purchased the Granactive 5% and didn’t fully understand that retinoids are different than retinols. I found your video super helpful and easy to follow too so thank you
Hi Kimberly & I'm glad the video was helpful! - it was the 2% retinoid in emulsion, not squalene, that I recommended, as it has retinol in it but the ones in Squalane don't. I can't recommend those with not knowing your skin - as a beginner I'd recommend trying the granactive 5% and seeing how your skin reacts, and then adding in a Retinol at some point if its ok but I don't personally get on with Retinoids and stopped using them all a few years back. x
Happy anniversary to you both. Re retinols I'll stick to retin-a for now. Always love your eyes, any chance ever of you ever doing a 'how i do my eyes' tutorial? Have recently had upper eyelid surgery and am trying to learn eyeshadow but its hard when you have never been able to before as it would have been a hideous waste of time.
Bless you, thank you re the eyes comment! I've actually done lots of eyeshadow tutorials although they are old - I haven't actually changed the way I do it at all so I'm sure you could find one that's applicable, its very hard for me to do tutorials nowadays. Hope that helps. I'd LOVE to have Blepharoplasty - its my dream! x
Thank you so very much for your educated advice. I ordered The Grantactive Retinoid 5% in squalane and had no adverse reactions as I have been using Aha's and other exfoliiants for years before it became mainstream. I am unsure as to what to do as I ordered Differrin gel from CVS, a drugstore in America). I am nervous as to how to use these products. One more thing, I also ordered the Retinol1% in squalane. Help. I am totally confused and have no idea how I should rotate these products. Any info. however small would be so welcome. My skin has been through extreme temperatures(BELOW FREEZING TO WAY ABOVE) from my younger years of exposure I find my skin is quite immune to treatmentnts. All I want is my skin back! Please help as I am almost in tears!!
The 5% in Squalane is NOT a Retinoid so its very unlikely you would get a reaction but the 1% Retinol is MUCH stronger so please be careful. Same with differin - I would recommend using one first to see how your skin reacts and it takes a few days to show - so maybe start with the Retinol 1% for one night then wait 3 days and see what happens. Then maybe add in Differin once a week and again wait 3 days. x
Congratulations 🎊!! Thanks for clearing up some confusion on the differences between retinols, etc. ( brands are clearly not interested in giving out great information). But I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on La roche posay redermic R. I've been testing it a little and I think I'm seeing a difference within days.... But is this my imagination 🤓😌 Have you ever tried it?? 😘 😘
Thanks Colette! I HAVE used the R Dermic R and I loved it. I believe its 0.3% Retinol, and it has Sodium Hyaluronate in it which is great, but it does have so perfume which isn't great (but its very low on the list so not a huge concern). If you are seeing a difference in your skin I would imagine thats from the Glycerin, Soybean Oil & SH I mentioned. Its not really possible for wrinkles & fine lines to be affected in a few days dramatically, however, they could possibly look better and more plumped up if hydrated by the above ingredients :0) That's good news for you as it means in 3 months to a year or so you'll see even better results! x
This was extremely helpful. I’m currently using Paula’s Choice clinical 1% retinol treatment, but would love to switch to one of The Ordinary’s retinol or retinoid products. I think my best bet is this. Thanks for the great info (subscribed!).
Have you tried using the retinol 1% ( its no longer available i think) and using a wee bit with a pea size of cream? I found when i started using it, it was very strong. I just cut it with a nice cream and slowly increased my usage. I do think it had no softener, only silicone and retinol. Thanks for the review, i did not purchase any of these new ones since im using up the stronger version
Hey dear, how exactly do I layer it? My nighttime skincare routine is very minimalistic; proper wash & moisturize. Oh, and how often should I use it approximately?
AA Start by using once or twice a week and then build up. If your skin is easily irritated, it’s suggested that you use vitamin A product after moisturizer.
Hey Karen, Differin is a specific formula intended to beat the acne. It's not that efficient as the other vitamin A formulas for anti-aging. You can find 1-2% or even more on ebay searching for yellow peeling (there are some of them in polish and spanish stores). Some of them will be calling retinoid acid. Also there are quite a lot of 1-2% creams on iherb with the actual 1%-2% of retinod acid in it, which would give you better results. Agree, ordinary vit A products just too weak to give the results, but actual yellow peel with higher concentration gives you results literally in a week. I'm from Russia and we have the dermatologists cabinets where you can do up to 40-50% retinoid yellow peels with the doctor (about £50 per one procedure) and you can actually see lifting, pores soothing effects, and wrinkles going away slightly in a week - two weeks periods after even just one-two procedures. So it definitely works - you just need to find a higher concentration. Try spanish/polish brands ie mediderma etc. It makes you peeling heavily for a few days but the results will be visible
So they sell yellow peel online are you saying? Sorry I'm super tired and confused I've never heard of yellow peel idk if we have that in the states lol
This made my face break out like crazy. I have never had this issue with a retinol. It must be the squaline. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with oily skin.
I buy my tretinoin over the counter in Spain and bring it home, it's prescription strength called Retirides. Approx €15 per tube plus postage (I'll buy it over the counter in Spain when I'm there) but have bought from a chemist in Andorra online too (sounds so dodgy but it's really not!) I'm having some issues peeling but not as bad as I had with the ordinary 1% retinol. It's just annoying really, a few irritated patches but sticking with the every 3 nights for another 2 weeks to see if my skin gets more adjusted. I'm liking so far. I couldn't afford to see a derm but this cream is prescribed here too but I'm circumnavigating the need to see a dermatologist privately. I'm 34 next month.
Hello, I have been using the Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion for a week now. But I am not sure if I picked the right serum from the Ordinary for my skin condition. I have a lot of acne scars and hyper pigmentation spots that I am trying to get rid of. Can you advise if this is even the right type of product to use?
Hi Tariq, its certainly a great product to use but there are so many options - sounds like you need a full detailed skincare routine - I know that Deciem are great at giving routine ideas etc if you email them, and I have it on my list to investigate the best routines for your skin type, but I'm not there yet I'm afraid. x
Mrs Ginger Beauty oh boy now I am confused again lol... I was trying not to ask but I don't know which way to go now... So is the Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion and 2 or 5% in squalane Stronger than the .2, .5 and 1% Retinol in Squalane?
hi. is this a good plan? Example regimen for textural irregularities: AM Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% PM Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, Granactive Retinoid 2% or 5% in Squalane Note: AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution can be applied as a masque up to twice per week in the PM.
Hi Karen, you can get differin from Boots acne clinic online. It’s an online questionnaire followed by a private prescription and dispensed to your local branch a few days later. You can order 1, 2, 3 or 4 tubes. 1 tube is c£25. 4 tubes is c£60. You can also order Skinoren online, which is 20% Azelaic Acid.
So can I introduce the low percentage retinol into my routine while still using the granactive retinoid in squalane every other night? is it safe to do so despite their website suggesting not to mix retinol with retinoid? I know you addressed this already but I’m kinda confused. Thanks !
I have been using the 2% emulsion for about three months now and I am pleased with the results. I notice a reduction in the issues I started using retinols for (texture, fine lines, and uneven skin tone). I went to reorder the 2% emulsion and saw the 5% and wanted to try it but am nervous to change up my routine. If it's not broke don't fix it, right? Ive used ROQ previously (haven't been able to figure out if it contains a retinol or a retinod) and the Ordinary's serum with no irritation. Would you recommend I try the 5% or stick with the 2% emulsion?
Difficult for me to advise Tiffany to be honest - its really up to you as you know your skin best. I don't personally think the HPR is strong (ordinary retinoid) so I doubt there would be an issue with 5% but I'd hate to recommend it and then your skin freaks out! x
I just wish The Ordinary will make a 5% Emulsion, with both retinol and HPR in the formulation. I love the 2% emulsion but always wish for it to be a tad stronger.
I've just ordered the 2% in squaline and now wonder if this will be strong enough - I've been using the Peter Thomas Roth 1.5% retinol treatment and haven't noticed much difference - perhaps I should have gotten the 5% in squaline - any thoughts?
It depends on your belief about the HPR in the Retinoid. If you only want to use something that is proven, then the 1% Retinol in Squalane would be your best bet, as the 5% Retinoid from ordinary is way weaker in my opinion. x
Really interesting Karen 👍🏻Hi Karen I got my Differin from The Independent Pharmacy online.I did have to fill an online questionnaire that asks if you’re prone to spots which I am, & basic other questions. I paid £32.95 including delivery. They email me to repurchase but it takes a long time to get through it.I bought the size 45g f it will last me a very long time.I just thought I’d mention it to you because I know you do a lot of research 👍🏻🌸🤗
I guess if I want better anti aging and anti acne results I'll have to go with the retinol. I did try the older version of the 2% retinoid and had no issues with it. I don't like the siliconey texture of the older version of the retinol so I'm looking forward to trying the new version. The Ordinary website does claim that the retinoid is better than the retinol in terms of results, or did I get confused?
No you didn't get confused, Retinoid IS better than Retinol in terms of results and I can see now they've suggested on their site that this new active is better with less irritation. They are obviously claiming that because they are selling it, but the only research was by the company that manufactures it with a few people, and that is not proven - that's why they can only say "has been shown". Even if one person said "I think this has improved my wrinkles" they can say it "has been shown to reduce ageing signs". x
Sorry, but I am still confused. Is there a retinoid that is over the counter you can recommend? I currently have Sunday Riley Luna oil, The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (or is this not an ester?) and Jordan Samuel's étOILe with Retinol Treatment Oil ( 0.2% pure retinol).
I've been using their 1% pure retinol for 1.5 years now and I see no difference in my fine lines. I have no irritation. I started age 27 now nearly 30. What do you suggest?
Oh-my-goodness. I am new to this whole retin..... world and have to admit I started laughing out loud at the beginning of your video thinking that I was on hidden camera because I got TOTALLY confused between old and new formulas, what was in them and what the difference was. I was wondering if you could explain where Avene's retinaldehyde fits into this whole retin ... mess? It is supposed to be one step from retin-A but how does that compare to retinol and the 2% ester you were talking about?
Hi Nette, its very confusing isn't it! I know of Retinaldehyde, but haven't researched it much - its a precursor to Retinoic acid and the little research I did do, made me think this might be the ingredient we are reaching for in the future. It doesn't compare at all to the Ester as the ester is unproven and new, so no studies have compared it. Retinol is actually converted into Retinaldehyde then to Retinoic acid, so has one more step than Retinaldehyde, BUT Retinol has had more research done and is therefore more proven. Retinaldeyhde is less irritating and in the small research studies done, does show it to be as effective as retinol. All that said, the Avene product that has Retinaldehyde, doesn't give a percentage and its almost at the bottom of the ingredient list, so possibly not very potent. I don't believe there are any Retinaldehyde products that do give a percentage, because the research has not yet been done to show the effective amount required. x
Thank you SO much for answering. I realize that there is no % on the Avène YsthéAL product. I have sensitive skin and never used a retin-product, so starting slowly with this product after having started to dermaroll and am happy to report that I didn't have a bad reaction. Only very, very slight peeling. If that is due to the formula or because the product has a weak effect I have no clue. Will try to step up the game once my Avène YstéAL is empty and try one of The Ordinary's products.
This was very interesting and comprehensive, thank you Karen! I've dealt with acne for a few years now, but shelling out a couple hundred euros for a dermatologist isn't in my budget atm. I ordered the 2% in squalane yesterday as a first introduction to vit A like things, but I saw iHerb has Differin now and I'm wondering whether I would get to my goal faster going straight to a once-weekly routine of that.
Differin is used to combat acne, so if you can get ahold of that I'd say go for it. I was prescribed Differin from my dermatologist to use if my acne came back after roaccutane. So far so good, so I haven't picked it up yet but it's nice to know I have it to fall back on if the acne decides to come back.
I've used Differin for 20+ years and YES--it works for reduction in depth of wrinkles & keeping new at bay. 100% can vouch for that. I use tretinoin (Retin-A) now and The Ordinary on neck (2% emulsion & 5% squalane) as neither cause the irritation on the much more sensitive neck area that Retin-A causes. Get the Differin for sure! Keep in mind, Retin-A/Differin is a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient.
what do you think about this pm rotation? 1st night the ordinary 2% or 5% 2nd night L ascorbic acid 3rd Retin A 0.05% did start retin a slowly one and a half year ago. ..no irritation just feel more sun sensitivity also please help me about L ascorbic acid use confusion .. if apply in the morning and then go out won't oxidation start on skin? ?? thank you for sharing your knowledge ♡♡♡♡♡
Just stumbled across your videos today and love them! I've been using the 5% granactve in the video, where do I go after this for a stronger retinoid/retinol? I'm confused by the percentages and them not being comparable!
Hi, So has the 5% retinoid in squalane got any retinol in it? As you said the 2% granactive retinoid emulsion has 1% in it, just trying to decide if it's worth going for the 5% granactive retinoid in squalane if it doesn't contain retinol... if you know what I mean.🤦🏽♀️ Thanks
Yep. so much information and slightly bamboozled with 'ingredients' and so on. could do with consenting a little although appreciate the hard work that goes into it. x
Hi please can you help me with some questions ? In How long you can see some result in the skin with this granactive retinoid 2% in squalane speaking for example about wrinkles, or definitely is better retine A, or I have to just chance for granactive retinoid 5%, because what is the difference that is supposed I have to see in my skin using this ordinary granactive retinoid 2% squalane? Can you help me what products are better for dehydrated skin and wrinkles (I am using right now caffeine for eye, buffet, hyaluronic acid, matrixcil, granactive 2% and argilerine solution 10% for eye splits day and night time but I didn’t see yet results) of course I using moisturizer, my spf protection, face mask twice or more per week exfoliate as well, and sometime in the week my oils I just trying the ordinary but I want to know your opinion, do I have to give more time to the ordinary skin products?
I've been using the ordinary retinol 2% in squalane for the last 3 weeks (each night) and this explains a lot, as I'm not noticing any difference to my skin at all (just moisturised after I apply it) I've had absolutely no irratiation which is great but it has made me question whether it's actually working?!
I’m not her but I can say is that you need more time to judge a vitamin A derivative product this is going to take a lot more time that just 3 weeks in my personal opinion this is not going to give you amazing results for me it reduces my acne in the past and on my mother it reduces a little bit her wrinkles but nothing crazy you should try pure retinol in Squalane by the ordinary it’s much better but much stronger try the 0,2 first it’s really amazing I use the 0,5 and my mom 1% she really like it
Alex Nowaka thanks for your advice.. since typing this I have started to notice it's doing something on my skin so I'll definitely give it longer to work😊
Hey, I m not a professional but.. my skin is incredibly sensitive and I don't tolerate retinol, for example. However I m using the lower dosaged 2% retinoid every night, also under the eyes, and I never had problems so far (I m using it since 3 months)
I had inial reaction to granactive retinoid 2% emulsion. However that subsided after 2 weeks and I continue using the product. This didn’t suprise me. My skin does appear to be hyper sensitive. It even reacted to Ordinarys Niacinamide10% with stinging at first.
Hey please reply 🥺Can I use granactive retinoid and tretinoin together (like on alternate days ) But I fear the two may inhibit each other and both become useless ? ((Google says tretion stays in system upto 1 day and granactive upto 15hrs. So I wonder if using the two on alternate days would work or not)) Have used both . Tretinion tightens skin and granactive retinoid gives a very shiny texture. I want both 😭
There really isn't a way to talk about which is better, as they are different ingredients, although as I say in the video, Retinol is the one with evidence. I don't use Retinoids now. x
@@TheBeautyMaverick okayy, i also read that the 0.5 and 1% yield in the same results eventually only tye irritation level differs, do you think that's true. Cuz in this case it's better to take the 0.5...
Thank you so much!! your info really help me to understand retinoid, the ordinary, retnol, tretinoid all these confusing bit. very useful info! bless your heart!
Hello Karen, my mom is 48 yo, tried the inkey list retinol and it did nothing, she's looking for a bit faster results and I've been overwhelmed by all six retinols, which do you recommend for her age group and concern of hyperpigmentation? Thankyou for the informative video
For faster results your mum would need to use Tretinoin - this video explains where to buy it - th-cam.com/video/7CG7K-Ou6IY/w-d-xo.html - its very strong though so care would be needed to build up from low strength slowly to higher. Vitamin C daily would also be good for hyperpigmentation. x
@@TheBeautyMaverick Thank you fir the video! Also she's only used the Inkey List before, is it okay to start with 0.025 tretinoin? Then build up from there?
Happy Anniversary Karen!!! Hope you both had a lovely day. I currently use the 2% Retinoid Emulsion (the original Advanced Retinoid) if I switched to the 5% in Squalane what Retinol would you suggest using alongside? And would I use this at the same time or not? Xx
Thanks so much Sharon! As I said in the video, if you are going to use Retinol and Retinoid, then start with the lowest Retinol (which is 0.2% I think) and never use at the same time. I shouldn't really even recommend using them both but that's what I would personally do :0) Thanks so much for commenting! x
in the video you say the retinoid is stronger than retinol, yet in the comments you recommended the proven 1% retinol to someone...I watched the whole video and now I'm confused...could you PLEASE LIST list all of the products from weakest to strongest?? if you see it in writing it's a lot faster and direct....
As I explained in the video, actual RETINOID is the strongest, RETINOL is weaker, and then there is the RETINOID ESTER from the ordinary which is weaker than actual RETINOID but can't be compared to RETINOL as they are apples & oranges. It really is complex I'm afraid. RETINOID in a form such as TRETINOIN is strongest & proven, RETINOL is weaker but also proven, and The Ordinary RETINOID is HPR so a retinoid ester so nowhere near as strong as TRETINOIN and not as proven as RETINOL. Hope that clarifies. It IS a complex subject and its unfortunately not possible to list from strongest to weakest, as its not yet known and won't be until more research is done.
I think the confusion comes from the use of the word “retinoid”. Retinoid is actually an umbrella term that refers to any vitamin A or vitamin A derivative. Both retinol and retin-A (retin-A is also called retinoid acid) are retinoids. Retin-A is prescription strength, and the most effective. Retinol is over-the-counter, and not as strong as your skin needs to convert it twice before it becomes Retin-A. Esters are different again, and each type has an ester version.
If you ever find yourself visiting the Philippines, you should drop by one of the Mercury Drug chain drugstores or even a Watson’s and get a tube or two of Retin-A. Costs around $14 per tube (can’t remember the size). But it’s all OTC, no doctor’s prescription needed. 😊
@@queeddity5450 yes that true. But my favorite that I used to apply is Steva-A and is now phase out. Though you can still find other brands like Retin-A. It's over the counter.
Hi, I just found your videos and was wondering, Just purchased the ordinary 5% granactive retinoid, is this stronger than lets say the new olay retinol 24 or roc products?..just really curious..thx love.
I think this video will explain all, but short answer no, the ordinary retinoid is a very weak unproven product. th-cam.com/video/LCwXNCecrYs/w-d-xo.html
Thanks so much! Can I ask you- is it normal to get something like a rash from retinol? I used TO retinol 0.2% in sqalane two days ago and got an irritation that looks like a rash...? I am not sure if that's normal, because I didn't get peeling or burning...I got this tiny little dots all over my face..
I don't think that's normal no - dry flaky skin is somewhat "normal" with Tretinoin, but irritation is a big no with any type of Retinoid - you have the same reaction as me it sounds like - I had that from the 0.2 Retinol in Squalane also :0( It just doesn't suit our skin! x
I've also just ordered the 2% in squaline - never used any retinols/retinoids before and wrote to Victoria Health to ask how often to use this but forgot to mention my use of AlumierMD's AHA and how to incorporate the 2% into my routine. I do remember reading some article where that Brandon guy said they didn't approve of retinol use so am wondering why all the products? Anyhow, as a first time user, can you recommend when I should use this, how often and what to avoid using at the same time ... i.e the alpha hydroxy acid? I love the squalane on it's own so that's why I ordered this granactive retinoid. You're right, it is REALLY complicated and thank goodness there is someone like you giving good honest impartial information.
I've talked about using acids with retinoids and also what to mix it with and what not to :0) They should help - th-cam.com/video/XFNr8NlQNns/w-d-xo.html
How would you combine this with the retinol 1% in squalane if you’re skin could tolerate that? Which would you put on first, after water based serums and before moisturiser? Or would it matter as they are both in squalane?
I wouldn't combine these tbh - Retinol on its own is strong enough - use it as often as your skin can tolerate and then use the 5% HPR on the other nights if you want to. x
The Beauty Maverick ahh ok fair enough. I just went ahead and started using retinol 1% in squlane every night a few weeks ago and there was a slight warning on the first night but nothing ever since. I’m a little bit surprised as everyone seems to have had some kind of reaction to it, I’m hoping it’s not a dud bottle. Thanks for your advice as usual 🙏
Tried the 2% in squalane for a month and everyday I had one pimple. When the one dried another would take it's place. I never get pimples. Not even when I was a teenager. Before this I used Neutrogena and I did not break out with it.
Tricia Pascual had the same issue!!!! But I’m guessing it’s from the the squalene. I used all kinds of face oil but squalene is the only one that gives me pimples.
Hi, what would you suggest for a teenage girl, I have some blemishes but mosreso just scaring, redness and texture from past acne. I’ve used the granactive retenoid in emulsion for the last couple of months and noticed a bit of a difference, no irritation. My mum just bought me the granactive retenoid 5% in squalene. I’m unsure whether to take it back and keep using emulsion or try the 5% squalene? What would you suggest?
Not something I can quickly answer off the top of my head as I'd need much more info but have a look into Azelaic acid (I've done a video) and also tretinoin. As I explained, Retinoid isn't yet proven so I wouldn't recommend it for seeing any great immediate benefit. x
My mother is using 2%retinol in squlene for pigmentation.after hearing you.I think retinol 5% emulsion would be much better than squalene.is that right?
I am writing just to congratulate because yours are one of the most (if not the most) informative videos about retinoids I found on the web.
I especially appreciated your matter of facts approach to the ordinary products.
Thanks a lot, we need more contents like yours on line!
Greetings from Italy
Thank you so much, that's really kind of you to say :0) x
I think I’ve watched this video at least 10 times in the last year or so. It literally answers every question I’ve ever had in relation to The Ordinary and my journey with their retinol/retinoids(HPR). You’re incredible. Thank you!
Thank you for this. I understood everything perfectly, you're great at explaining a complicated ingredient. Happy Anniversary!
I use 5% for years and I love it...I love their products
I might venture to say it's more potent that otc retinol products, with way more bennefits (much more stable to light/temperature, less prone to cause irritation, fastest to get to work...)
For me, is the best retinoid on the market, even without the long term studies that retinol has since the 60's, this retinoid has been developed to take the crown of retinol.
I've been using it for less than 6 months and I've been noticing major changes in my sking (even people around me).
It would be lovely to see a Granactive 5% emulsion in the future!
Regards from Spain!
Can i use it everyday at night?
@@raniaalazazi2758 yes! It's gentle enough. Don't stop if you peel in certain areas, it's normal at first, don's stop it!
My mother has very sensitive skin and can tolerate it daily without problems. If in your case you experience redness or irritation, wait until your skin heals and use it every other day.
Happy anniversary! What a cute candle with your names on it, what a lovely idea. Another excellent video, Karen, I really enjoyed it. Your skin and hair look especially lovely at the moment, whatever you are using right now clearly works for you. I love the eye look as well.
Happy Anniversary 🌞💕
I use to have the 2% for my acne prone skin and some times my skin was more prone to acne when I used the2%...now, I start to used 5% a month ago and from the first application I new I have a winner for my acne skin(mature) I love the 5%👍 no irritated my skin, next morning I really like how my skin looks.
Shumaila Adeel
Hi... I can tell you what I do 🙋
Morning I use Salicylic acid 2% from the Ordinary (amazing) by every 2evening I use Retinoid5%
And because I have combination skin and this treatment has Squaline I don't have to use any cream, this is ok for my skin...but before I put Retinoid, first I use Niacinamide 10%...and this is all what I use...and my skin is clear like never before... less is better 😊
The Retinoid 5% is my favorite product from the Ordinary and my cleanser is from Hylamide : High-Efficiency Face Cleaner...this cleanser cleaning my face like nothing before.. perfect for big pores👍
Good luck 🙋😊
Hanna Augustyn hi there. I recently ordered 2% emulsion but they got my order wrong and sent me 5% squalane instead. They’re offering and exchange but I wonder if should just try the 5% if it’s better? But I’m a newbie with retinoids though I’ve been on Accutane before. Hope you can advise me.
I'm still not sure which product works better - the 2% or the 5%. That's the basic message I was looking for.
Seekingthemiddle Way Retinol is stronger than Retinoid, so the 2% Retinol is stronger than the 5% Granactive Retinoid
@@angel7016 you mean retinoids are stronger then retinol?
Thanks, Peter!
Maialeen so? XDq
Michael Chandra So...what? You have trouble with reading and comprehension? You should have learned that as a child.
Did you got any results from the retinoid 2% emulsion?
Granactive Retinoid is 90% Dimethyl Isosorbide and 10% HPR, so it is actually just 0.5% Retinoid Ester in there.
Congratulations on your 5 year wedding anniversary! :)
So good. Amazing repetition so I didn’t get lost. Absolutely perfect.
Thank you for this and all other Ordinary reviews - it really helps make sense of it all !
Very confusing. The only thing I would like to know is if the 5% in squalane would be more effective than the 2% emulsion?
I would like to know the main difference as well. Seems like the 2% is useless if there's a 5%?
Siri S. Fløttre
The 5% is much better, stronger. I have acne prone skin and for me is like "magic "...is keeping the acne in the bay...
Love it.👌♥️
Congrats on your anniversary. I think I'll just stick with my Retin A.
i don't know - it still goes over my head - i have a pyscho logical block : nothing to do with you, it's definitely me - happy anniversary 😘
this is the talk I like, facts and tests
Thank you for explaining. I was so confused before, but now I think I understand a bit more than before.
Awee Congratulations to you and your husband!
Apparently Geek & Gorgeous a-game retinal is excellent, not sure if you’ve tried it. But yes, apparently it’s an excellent European brand
Yes, its featured in my favourites a few times :0) x
I'd LOVE to have Blepharoplasty - its my dream! x
Hi. Will check your old tutorials. I love how your eyes are always striking, never bland. x
Happy Anniversary. Thank you for the info
Then maybe add in Differin once a week and again wait 3 days. x
Happy anniversary. Hope you had a lovely day. 💋
Dang I feel like we are all scientists hahaha
Thank you for the explanation. Atm I'm looking into different retinol/retionid/AHA products and this was really helpful.
But is this my imagination 🤓😌
Have you ever tried it??
Happy anniversary Karen
Hope you have a wonderful day.
I really enjoy all your videos.
Kind regards
Kate

Hey dear, how exactly do I layer it? My nighttime skincare routine is very minimalistic; proper wash & moisturize. Oh, and how often should I use it approximately?
AA Start by using once or twice a week and then build up. If your skin is easily irritated, it’s suggested that you use vitamin A product after moisturizer.
my head hurts
Same 😅
Happy anniversary, Karen! Very well done video, as usual!!
It makes you peeling heavily for a few days but the results will be visible
vorong2ru hello thanks for your advices! Do they ship to the UK ?
kyni87 yup, some of the sellers on ebay do ship these products to the UK
Louise McKelvey do you have a link for the chemist you use??
Could you share the link to the chemist for me as well? Would love to order it online
Hi Tariq, its certainly a great product to use but there are so many options - sounds like you need a full detailed skincare routine - I know that Deciem are great at giving routine ideas etc if you email them, and I have it on my list to investigate the best routines for your skin type, but I'm not there yet I'm afraid. x
Personally though, I'd scrap the Granactive and use Retinol (its stronger) and I'd incorporate a Vitamin C
Thank you very much for the response. I will look into using a Vitamic C serum.
Example regimen for textural irregularities:
AM
Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
PM
Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, Granactive Retinoid 2% or 5% in Squalane
Note: AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution can be applied as a masque up to twice per week in the PM.
That’s copied and pasted from the ordinary website so I’ll say you’re good.
Hi Karen, you can get differin from Boots acne clinic online. It’s an online questionnaire followed by a private prescription and dispensed to your local branch a few days later. You can order 1, 2, 3 or 4 tubes. 1 tube is c£25. 4 tubes is c£60.
You can also order Skinoren online, which is 20% Azelaic Acid.
mishido13 Great advice. Thank you. X

If you only want to use something that is proven, then the 1% Retinol in Squalane would be your best bet, as the 5% Retinoid from ordinary is way weaker in my opinion. x
@@angelinebiswas7611 I agree :S
Even if one person said "I think this has improved my wrinkles" they can say it "has been shown to reduce ageing signs". x
Retinoid IS proven to be better in the forms of pure Retinoid. This is a Retinoid ester, so not proven.
Thank you. I rewatched you older video comparing the Retinol and Retinoid so I do understand things better now.
Sorry, but I am still confused. Is there a retinoid that is over the counter you can recommend? I currently have Sunday Riley Luna oil, The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (or is this not an ester?) and Jordan Samuel's étOILe with Retinol Treatment Oil ( 0.2% pure retinol).
you have done an amazing explanation
I've been using their 1% pure retinol for 1.5 years now and I see no difference in my fine lines. I have no irritation. I started age 27 now nearly 30. What do you suggest?
Tretinoin is the next step. x
If you look into their studies you will see they mostly use 0.1% Retinal, which is a good amount.
Thank you. Have not found that info even though I have looked for it :)
You explained that very clearly thank you 🙂
This was very interesting and comprehensive, thank you Karen!
Be patient.
Would you say that differin is better at tackling wrinkles than the 2% emulsion?
what do you think about this pm rotation?
1st night the ordinary 2% or 5%
2nd night L ascorbic acid
3rd Retin A 0.05%
did start retin a slowly one and a half year ago. ..no irritation
just feel more sun sensitivity
also please help me about L ascorbic acid use confusion ..
if apply in the morning and then go out won't oxidation start on skin? ??
thank you for sharing your knowledge
♡♡♡♡♡
miu miu put them all on at the same time lol
Happy anniversary! 🎉🎉🎉
Just stumbled across your videos today and love them! I've been using the 5% granactve in the video, where do I go after this for a stronger retinoid/retinol? I'm confused by the percentages and them not being comparable!
Thanks so much! I would move on to a low strength Retinol, so maybe the Ordinary 0.2% in Squalane?
@@TheBeautyMaverick too kind, that k you :)
THANK YOU for breaking this down.
Hi,
So has the 5% retinoid in squalane got any retinol in it? As you said the 2% granactive retinoid emulsion has 1% in it, just trying to decide if it's worth going for the 5% granactive retinoid in squalane if it doesn't contain retinol... if you know what I mean.🤦🏽♀️
Thanks
No Retinol in any of the Squalane Retinoid ones no. x
@@TheBeautyMaverick
Thanks xx
Yep. so much information and slightly bamboozled with 'ingredients' and so on. could do with consenting a little although appreciate the hard work that goes into it.
Happy Anniversary!
I've been using the ordinary retinol 2% in squalane for the last 3 weeks (each night) and this explains a lot, as I'm not noticing any difference to my skin at all (just moisturised after I apply it) I've had absolutely no irratiation which is great but it has made me question whether it's actually working?!
I’m not her but I can say is that you need more time to judge a vitamin A derivative product this is going to take a lot more time that just 3 weeks in my personal opinion this is not going to give you amazing results for me it reduces my acne in the past and on my mother it reduces a little bit her wrinkles but nothing crazy you should try pure retinol in Squalane by the ordinary it’s much better but much stronger try the 0,2 first it’s really amazing I use the 0,5 and my mom 1% she really like it
Alex Nowaka thanks for your advice.. since typing this I have started to notice it's doing something on my skin so I'll definitely give it longer to work😊
Thank you! for sharing your product reviews and recommendations. Is the 2% retinoid emulsion ok to use around the eyes?
Hey, I m not a professional but.. my skin is incredibly sensitive and I don't tolerate retinol, for example. However I m using the lower dosaged 2% retinoid every night, also under the eyes, and I never had problems so far (I m using it since 3 months)
@@isabellum4676 how is your experience using 2% retinoid emulsion under eyes.. did it Smoothen your fine lines
I had inial reaction to granactive retinoid 2% emulsion. However that subsided after 2 weeks and I continue using the product.
This didn’t suprise me. My skin does appear to be hyper sensitive. It even reacted to Ordinarys Niacinamide10% with stinging at first.
I reacted to 2% retinoid emulsion too
Hey please reply 🥺Can I use granactive retinoid and tretinoin together (like on alternate days )
But I fear the two may inhibit each other and both become useless ?
((Google says tretion stays in system upto 1 day and granactive upto 15hrs. So I wonder if using the two on alternate days would work or not))
Have used both . Tretinion tightens skin and granactive retinoid gives a very shiny texture. I want both 😭
I don't think they would inhibit each other but my worry would be more about sensitivity. x
@The Beauty Maverick thank you so much for the reply ❤️ maybe I should just use tretinoin then
Would the 0.5 retinol with squalane be better than this one, if you've tried it? And how do you feel now about the 5% retinoid in squalane?
There really isn't a way to talk about which is better, as they are different ingredients, although as I say in the video, Retinol is the one with evidence. I don't use Retinoids now. x
@@TheBeautyMaverick okayy, i also read that the 0.5 and 1% yield in the same results eventually only tye irritation level differs, do you think that's true. Cuz in this case it's better to take the 0.5...
Thank you so much!! your info really help me to understand retinoid, the ordinary, retnol, tretinoid all these confusing bit. very useful info! bless your heart!
Hi Karen, I’m eyeing the inkey list retinol serum which contains 1% retinol and 0.5% granactive retinoid. Have you used that one?
Yes, discussed in the Inkey list haul and the more recent Inkey list empties. x
Mrs Ginger Beauty thank you so much!!
Then build up from there?
hi would the 5% retonoid be more effective for stubborn hyperpigmentation or the 2% retinol ?
Retinol always as the 5% Retinoid is an ester. Thats my opinion, but remember I'm not a professional! x
Deb Shand Thank you and you are correct.
Bless you both with many more ❤
The thing about retinoids is if I put a cream over at night it burns my under eyes unless I’m careful I just picked this up hopefully I like it
Just apply vaseline under the eyes, and around mouth area where skin is thinner and more sensitive. Then apply the retinoid on Ur face :)
Im new to all of this, so can i use this as my first retionoid, and how can i use this so i wouldn't ruin my skin ? XD
How effective will be the granactive retinoid 2% in squalane?? Please help.
Trentenoin dries the hell out of my skin... Ugh. Just put on the 5% granactive for the first time tonight though
Jessi Olivier me too! The one in squalene oil.
@@voiceovers7080 How did you guys go ? Just put it on my skin for the 1st time.
Farrah Susulan What? Is this for real? I know Differin is non prescription tho. I just ask about it in Mercury the other day. But not retin A. 😅
@@queeddity5450 yes that true. But my favorite that I used to apply is Steva-A and is now phase out. Though you can still find other brands like Retin-A. It's over the counter.
Alex Cabaang There’s no RetinA in Mercury anymore. I have asked. I bought it at Watsons for ₱250-ish for 5g for starter. Thanks to this!
@@TheBeautyMaverick ok thx, maybe I can return it.
I don't think that's normal no - dry flaky skin is somewhat "normal" with Tretinoin, but irritation is a big no with any type of Retinoid - you have the same reaction as me it sounds like - I had that from the 0.2 Retinol in Squalane also :0( It just doesn't suit our skin! x
Mrs Ginger Beauty Thank you so much! :)
I've talked about using acids with retinoids and also what to mix it with and what not to :0) They should help - th-cam.com/video/XFNr8NlQNns/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/JLu-kUeA3zQ/w-d-xo.html
Apart from those videos, I'd say you can be pretty liberal with the Ordinary Retinoid, as I've said in the video, its an ester, so very weak. x
Thanks so much for trying to explain this!
So is this better/stronger than Differin - Adapalene?
No definitely not! x
@@TheBeautyMaverick thank you
Oh wow I would of never known...
I am using the emulsion its less greasy
Im read and have oily skin ....hesitate to order really
I felt the squaline made the granactive 5% so oily. I felt it was unpleasant.
As I explained, Retinoid isn't yet proven so I wouldn't recommend it for seeing any great immediate benefit. x
I now started using the 2% retinoid in squalene....... I have never used any retinoid or retinol products in the past.
Hi I'm 38years old i ve pigmentation on my cheeks so what you suggested for me
My mother is using 2%retinol in squlene for pigmentation.after hearing you.I think retinol 5% emulsion would be much better than squalene.is that right?
