It is trite to understand how this was explained with the use of several concepts to explain this same reality* Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. In Romans 8, Paul described the spirit that we have received, that lives in us as: • The spirit of life (verse 2) • The spirit of God (verse 9) • The spirit of Christ (verse 9) • his spirit (verse 11) • The spirit of adoption (verse 15) • The spirit (verse 16) These do not describe different concepts, but the same with different words to characterize what we have received. The spirit of God (his spirit, the spirit of he that raised up Christ from the dead) is the spirit of Christ, the spirit of life, the spirit of adoption. Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Vs 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Vs 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Paul explained in 1st Corinthians 2 that the spirit which we have received is not of the world, but of God! Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, Vs 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. Vs 6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Paul explained in his epistle to the Galatians similar to how he did in Romans with regard to the spirit we have received. In verse 5, he says that we may receive the adoption of sons. The term “adoption” which implies placement as sons was also used by Paul to explain the same fact in Romans 8. Observe that in Romans 8, he used the term “the spirit of adoption” to refer to what we received, while in Galatians 4, he says that we have received the adoption of sons (5), and in verse 6, stated that we are sons because God has sent forth the spirit of his son into our hearts. The phrase “abba, Father” also seen in both texts shows the fact that in the new birth, we are born of the spirit, we are born of God, therefore we are sons of God and God is our Father. Thus the spirit of adoption is the spirit of Christ, the spirit of the son. Earlier on, Paul had explained the promise of the spirit and how it was received by faith: Galatians 3:2 This only would I learn of you, received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? The spirit is received not by the works of the law but by the hearing of faith. The same was buttressed a few verses later. Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. The “promise of the spirit” here can be understood to imply “the promised spirit” as seen from what he was discussing in Galatians 3:2 (receiving the spirit) and also in Galatians 4 (we are sons because God has sent forth the spirit of his son into our hearts…) Thus, the believer at salvation received and now has the spirit of the son which is the spirit of Christ. The term “spirit of Christ” thus will point to the new birth, where we are born as sons of God. *Confession:“I have received the promised spirit by faith in Christ Jesus. I have the spirit of God, I have the spirit of Christ, I have the spirit of the son, therefore I am a son of God.”*
