Hand Auger Improvements for Shallow Well Digging

  • If you are digging a shallow well with many pulls or difficult soil, this change can save you a lot of time and energy.
    As purchased, the Seymour auger uses additional sections of 3/4" pipe and couplings. It takes time, wrenches and effort. With depth over 25 feet the pipe will begin to flex and give.
    Convert your extensions to 1" 11ga square steel tubing and use sections of 1 1/4" 14ga square steel tubing for the couplers. Drill holes in each ends of the sections and use coupler safety pins to secure. Much more stable and simple to remove or add extensions - with no tools.
    Through Seymour's permission I add a link to their auger product line here - seymourmidwest.com/augers
    Use code: TigerCreek20 for a 20% discount
    NOTE: The replacement auger for the AUA2 (adjustable from 6-8 inches) like I am using is now called the Seymour S500 Industrial Iwan-Adjustable Auger SKU: 21326 - and can be found here - seymourmidwest.com/21326

    Thanks for the info and the 20% discount code. That got the 10" into my price range. BTW, the bigger diameter holes are actually easier to dig with this style of auger.

    I drilled one in my backyard to 30 feet, I used 1" pvc drop pipe 20' long and 10' of 1/2 in black steel. I was suprised the pvc worked so well and was nice and light (ish)

    I enjoyed your story. I used the Seymour 6 inch auger to 21 ft then went back using an 8 inch auger and installed 6 inch pvc casing. Most of mine was clay. 21 ft was it. I often thought using square tubing would give additional advantage over the 3/4" pipe, but never got around to trying. By luck I hit a decent supply at around 18-19 ft. I use a 1 hp pump with foot valve at 17 ft to supply garden sprinklers. I have to wait for recovery, but it beats waiting on the rain. Thanks for sharing your method.

      T Byrd thanks for the comments. I bet that 6" pipe gives you a lot more needed volume. The square tubing just makes it easier to work solo and seems to give you the ability a get a little more torque deeper down. Congrats and good luck with your well.

      Have you thought about adding a holding tank for your water you could then use pressure tanks and a booster pump you could actually have enough water to supply a house that way it's what I use at my home and it works great thanks for sharing

    Just a thought - tether the bail of the pins its section coupler, so they can't be dropped down the bore hole. Maybe a small machine screw in a tapped hole through the double wall section as an anchor, with a length of fishing leader. The first thought I had when I saw you linking sections together in the video of drilling for the bee well was "I hope he doesn't drop that pin...".

      That’s a very good tip. When I dig deeper I keep a rope attached to the auger head.

    I have a thought here I'm looking for your opinion on - lets say that you keep your 3/4 " threaded pipe and just make a coupler to attach 2 pieces of 3/4 threaded pipe instead - so 6 foot piece of threaded galvanized pipe and in between you just make a coupler to screw onto the end of each 3/4 pipe --- one of the ends has a 6 inch 1" sq tubing welded to a steel female threaded coupler and drill hole in for pin (( after fabricated you just screw that onto the 6 foot threaded galvanized pipe )) ---- then for the receiving side you weld a piece maybe like 5 and half inches of 1 1/4" square tubing to a steel 3/4" threaded steel coupler that you tighten to the other 6 foot piece of 3/4 inch galvanized steel pipe then insert the coupler unions you just created together and put your pin in. So basically making couplers to connect 2 pieces of 3/4 inch galvanized pipe together instead of buying 5 foot pieces of square tubing and welding on the 6 inch pieces of 1 1/4 inch sq tubing to the end.... what do you think ? is the 5 foot section of square tubing welded to the 6 inch piece of 1 1/4 inch sq tubing stronger than this coupling unit that I am thinking about fabricating; to connect two 6 foot pieces of threaded pipe together? Just another way to look at creating a coupler unit - and I am on a budget and the 1 inch and the 1 1/4 inch square tubing these days is pretty high $$ -- this way I can create a couplers for maybe like 6 or 7 pieces to get me down a good 35 or 40 foot .. a little cheaper - but would it be just as strong ? Thoughts ?

    • @TigerCreekFarm
      @TigerCreekFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is a great idea. You are basically doing the same thing I did but using pipe as the long extensions rather than the square tubing. I’m sure there is someone here that is smart enough to educate us on the difference in structural strength between the pipe and the tubing. Good luck on your project and please share it with us when you’re finished.

    This is a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing. I have a question: What's the exact name of the 5/16" wire clips you used? I couldn't find them on Amazon and I want to use them to secure the square steel tubing extensions. Thank you!

    • @TigerCreekFarm
      @TigerCreekFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bad explanation on my part. They are called coupler safety pins. They are used to keep the tongue of a trailer locked to the hitch ball.

    When it's time to sharpen the auger blade, which side do you file? Inside or outside?

    • @TigerCreekFarm

      I’ve never sharpened it. But if I did I would sharpen from the inside out.

    I hit water with my Seymour auger at around 14 feet. Once I hit water sand/water wouldn’t stay together to bring up to surface. Any ideas? I thought about pumping water down hole to try to float out shavings or thought about mixing water/bentonite and pouring it down to see if that would make it solid enough to pull it out.

    • @TigerCreekFarm
      @TigerCreekFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Dawson I feel your pain. Try wrapping some duct tape around the auger head. The newly created “sides” should hold enough to help you remove the sand. If it is sand you are fighting adding water will just wash more sand loose creating a wiser hole to remove it from. I would try to go deeper as well.

    • @MrPholding
      @MrPholding 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestion. I thought if that didn’t work I could dig as deep as possible and then drive a standpoint further down. Do you have any experience with sand points and how much flow they provide?

    • @TigerCreekFarm
      @TigerCreekFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray Dawson that may be a plan. I have no positive experience with sandpoints. Every well was difficult and underperformed or broke while being driven. A lot of people use them with good results, though. You’ll need to use galvanized pipe and get a driving cap for the pipe.

    Just came from your shallow well digging video......do you sell the hole digger? Never seen a digger like that. Just the kind you have to pinch together (and not fun to get out of a hole.
