Seymour AUA2 Auger Modifications for Shallow Well Digging

  • How to make modifications to the Seymour AUA2 hand auger for easier well digging.
    The standard 3/4" pipe is fine for shallow holes but not so convenient for a shallow well.
    I convert the pipe to square tubing and coupler safety pins for quick and easy changes.
    Through Seymour's permission I add a link to their auger product line here - seymourmidwest...
    Use code: TigerCreek20 for a 20% discount
    NOTE: The replacement auger for the AUA2 (adjustable from 6-8 inches) like I am using is now called the Seymour S500 Industrial Iwan-Adjustable Auger SKU: 21326 - and can be found here - seymourmidwest...

    Thank you very much sir this is exactly the information l have been looking for as l want to dig my own well and l didn't want to use black pipe because of all the work you have to do putting it together and taking it apart. Very simply explained and a good video.

    What those augers need is a center spike about six inches long that you can punch into the hole to keep the auger head from wandering to keep the hole centered and the size of the auger head. Thinking about welding one on mine.

      Not needed. The design tracks pretty well on its own.

    I have a thought here I'm looking for your opinion on - lets say that you keep your 3/4 " threaded pipe and just make a coupler to attach 2 pieces of 3/4 threaded pipe instead - so 6 foot piece of threaded galvanized pipe and in between you just make a coupler to screw onto the end of each 3/4 pipe --- one of the ends has a 6 inch 1" sq tubing welded to a steel female threaded coupler and drill hole in for pin (( after fabricated you just screw that onto the 6 foot threaded galvanized pipe )) ---- then for the receiving side you weld a piece maybe like 5 and half inches of 1 1/4" square tubing to a steel 3/4" threaded steel coupler that you tighten to the other 6 foot piece of 3/4 inch galvanized steel pipe then insert the coupler unions you just created together and put your pin in. So basically making couplers to connect 2 pieces of 3/4 inch galvanized pipe together instead of buying 5 foot pieces of square tubing and welding on the 6 inch pieces of 1 1/4 inch sq tubing to the end.... what do you think ? is the 5 foot section of square tubing welded to the 6 inch piece of 1 1/4 inch sq tubing stronger than this coupling unit that I am thinking about fabricating; to connect two 6 foot pieces of threaded pipe together? Just another way to look at creating a coupler unit - and I am on a budget and the 1 inch and the 1 1/4 inch square tubing these days is pretty high $$ -- this way I can create a couplers for maybe like 6 or 7 pieces to get me down a good 35 or 40 foot .. a little cheaper - but would it be just as strong ? Thoughts ?

      think that is a great idea. You are basically doing the same thing I did but using pipe as the long extensions rather than the square tubing. I’m sure there is someone here that is smart enough to educate us on the difference in structural strength between the pipe and the tubing. Good luck on your project and please share it with us when you’re finished.

    What do you think about riveting on some sheet metal to enclose that open area on the auger, Id be concerned with the duct tape coming off the auger and getting stuck in the hole where i couldnt get at it.
    Thanks and you have done a great job with your videos, before i viewed them Id never even considered it possible that I could have a well on my 5 acres of property, now im hoping to have 1 at all 4 corners.

    • @TigerCreekFarm
      @TigerCreekFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Anderson I think drilling holes in the auger may harm the integrity of the metal. The tape is purely for a temporary pull or two to get through a bad area. The worse that would happen is that some of the tape comes off. It can be recovered by continuing to dig. It won’t cause the auger head to get stuck.

      I’m sure heating & cooling duct work could Slide Over and rivet little Wings that slide in the Auger to keep it in place. A little experimenting should solve this.

      those thick rubber exercise bands work well to and no need to heat up the metal. bit of work to get em nice an tight but they slide up and down pretty easy to dump

      srdorsey05 you’re right. It seems like they have renamed them all. Guess mine is an older model. I did some checking get and the AUA2 I use (adjustable between 6 to 8 inches) is now -
      Seymour® S500 Industrial™ Iwan - Adjustable Auger 6"-7"-8"

    Are you going to make the square tubing extension pieces and sell them?

    • @TigerCreekFarm

      Considered it but the cost of shipping would be pretty high. A local welder would be able to fab these up pretty easy.

      @@TigerCreekFarm what I will need for that and who can do this type of job ? Welder? What material are the tubes extensions can you specify what dimensions what materials I need can I buy the material in Lowe’s or home Deepot? Ty so much

    • @TigerCreekFarm
      @TigerCreekFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of the measurements and materials are in this video. Anyone with any welding experience should be able to do this. It would be pretty straightforward for them to do this. The materials would be found at a welding supply house or a metal supply house. Home Depot or Lowes probably don't have lengths long enough and they would be a lot more expensive there.

      a power auger like the predator (HF) is great... for fence posts. the point in these types of augers is to be able to do your own shallow well. That Predator auger is not going to let you go down 20-30 feet.
